I bet Oprah is really pissed. Dr. Phil posts bail for Florida teenager jail
2008-04-14 00:54:00
Is Dr. Phil crazy?  Is he bipolar? How could he possibly condone the impulsive actions of his staff just for a boost in  his television ratings. I think that the Dr. Phil Show should be canceled. This latest action comes on the heels of a ratings schame involving Britney Spears. Employees of the "Dr. Phil" television show posted bail for a central Florida teenager jailed for taking part in a videotaped beating of another teen, a spokeswoman for the show's host confirmed Saturday.Staff members of the talk show helped Mercades Nichols - one of eight teens facing charges in the case - post bond this weekend, "Dr. Phil" McGraw's spokeswoman Terri Corigliano said in an e-mail.  The show was to air on Tuesday!"These staff members have been spoken to and our policies reiterated. In addition, we have decided not to go forward with the story as our guidelines have been compromised."The show's producers were in the process of booking guests fo...

Investing in Workplace Depression Treatment is Good Business.
2008-04-13 22:18:00
April, 11 2008New studies released today by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) call for an integrated approach that incorporates clinical, community and workplace programs to better manage depression in the workplace. Of the more than 6 percent of the workforce struggling with depression, only half receive treatment, and even fewer receive care consistent with current treatment guidelines, the research revealed. Depression is linked to increased unemployment and absenteeism, decreased productivity, disrupted work organization and increased health care and disability costs. Researchers stressed that new “collaborative care” approaches may improve depression treatment outcomes by integrating community, workplace and clinical treatment options. This intensive approach bears higher initial costs, but ultimately make good business sense because more effective treatment leads to better productivity and employee retention.Enhanced depression care...

Oprah Winfrey is going to give Dr. Oz (Mehmet Oz, M.D.) his own television
2008-04-12 23:57:00
Oprah Winfey has decided to give her protoge Dr. Oz his own television show. Dr. Mehmet Oz has been featured on Oprah's show over the past several years. Unlike Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz is a real medical doctor.Winfrey has been featuring Oz frequently on her show, a strategy similar to the one she employed with Phil McGraw and Rachael Ray ahead of their talk show launches. Oz, vice chair of surgery and professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University, even hosted an episode practically by himself recently.Oz also has hosted such Discovery Health programs as "Second Opinion With Dr. Oz," and Discovery Communications featured him in its video reel Tuesday at its "upfront" presentation to advertisers in Los Angeles. Oz has been influenced by many people, including the ideas of the Swedish scientist, philosopher, theologian, and Christian mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. He recently wrote in Spirituality and Health Magazine that "As I came into contact with Swedenborg's many writings, I began...

Depression is linked to Alzheimer's Disease. Geez!
2008-04-09 19:30:00
This is my worst nightmare, although I am not surprised.  People with depression are more likely to later develop Alzheimer's disease, according to two studies published yesterday, and one team said that chronic stress may damage their brains."What we think it suggests is that depression truly is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, and not simply a sign that the disease is developing," Dr. Robert Wilson, a neuropsychologist at  Rush University Medical Center in Chicago who led one study. "Our thinking is that depression somehow causes damage to part of the brain called the limbic system, and this is the part of the brain that Alzheimer's disease preferentially attacks," Wilson said. The limbic system includes the hippocampus and amygdala, which play key roles in emotions and memory. The subjects in the study, which appeared in the Archives of General Psychiatry, were asked about depressive symptoms and not about specific episodes. Police suicides are a bigger threat than the criminals. Three times as many
2008-04-09 07:48:00
This story from today's New York Times about police suicides really shocked me:While line-of-duty deaths grab the public’s attention, experts say that law enforcement officers more often — perhaps two or three times more often — die by their own hands. Comparing suicide rates within law enforcement with those in the general population is difficult because statistics are kept by different agencies and it is hard to account for demographics. Also, the general population does not undergo the extensive psychological and physical screening most officers undergo when they are hired, making comparisons questionable. But many who have studied the phenomenon agree that the stress of the job and easy access to weapons can contribute to a higher risk for suicide.“We’re losing a police officer every 19 or 20 hours of self-inflicted wounds,” said Robert E. Douglas Jr., a former Baltimore police officer and chaplain who runs the National Police Suicide Foundation in Maryland. “It i...

Oprah Winfrey "A New Earth" class number 6: learning how to break free from
2008-04-07 03:32:00
Oprah Winfrey's web cast based on the book A New Earth  by Eckhart Tolle, class number 6 will be held on Monday April 7th at 9:00pm Eastern. In a previous post I listed some pre-class excercises. Because the topic of managing chronic pain is very important to many people, including depression sufferers, here are a few more excercises: This week, in your interactions with others, if you feel repulsed or agitated by a person’s energy field, pay attention to your reactions. Your pain-body is probably reacting to the other person’s pain-body. It requires a high degree of Presence to avoid reacting. "If you are able to stay present, it sometimes happens that your Presence enables the other person to disidentify from his or her own pain-body and thus experience the miracle of a sudden awakening. I like particularly like excercise number 2:     2. Some pain-bodies react to particular kinds of "triggers"—situations that resonate with specific emo...

Kurt Cobain: 14th anniversary of his suicide due to a self-inflicted gun sh
2008-04-06 03:05:00
Today is the fourteenth anniversary of the suicide of Kurt Kobain ( February 27th, 1967 to April 5th 1994). He died at the age of 27 and he would have been 41 years old had he sought proper treatment for his substance abuse problems. In 1987 Cobain started the band Nirvana with Krist Novoselic, however:During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with drug addiction and the media pressures surrounding him and his wife, Courtney Love. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his home in Seattle, the victim of what was officially ruled a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. In ensuing years, the circumstances of his death became a topic of fascination and debate.DRUGS AND ADDICTION Throughout most of his life, Cobain battled chronic bronchitis and intense physical pain due to an undiagnosed chronic stomach condition. This last condition was especially debilitating to him emotionally, and he spent years trying to find its cause. However, none of the doctors he ...

Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky: a good show about addiction, depressi
2008-04-05 04:55:00
I was very skepticle of this show and its potential exploitation of a very emotional and potentially fatal  subject: substance abuse.  I think VH1 executives may have wanted "Celebrity Rehab " to be that kind of show. Fortunately, it didn't turn out to be that way, especially with Dr. Drew Pinsky as the head doctor on the show. Dr. Drew is a guy with a good sense of humor, as anyone who has heard the radio show "Loveline" knows. However, he is also a good, smart doctor who takes his field of work seriously despite his celebrity status. When you see him on camera, you can tell that he really cares about his patients, and is doing this reality show to help them and others who may be watching. He does all this without constantly looking into the camera or looking down on his patients. It many ways it was a "window on the world of rehab" that anyone could watch and appreciate from the comfort of their home:"Celebrity Rehab" was th...

2008-04-03 23:26:00
You have to be very careful about self-medicating and using drugs without following the strict directives of your doctor. Acccording to the National Center for Health Statistics deaths caused by drug overdoses is the second leading cause of death in the United States. The report is published in the March Health E-Stats. A second study, this one published in February, blames one narcotic drug specifically for the lethal trend: methadone, a drug often prescribed to treat chronic pain:Fingerhut's report shows methadone deaths are up from 786 in 1999 to 4,462 in 2005 for an increase of almost 500%. Fingerhut's research and other evidence suggests most of the methadone deaths are caused by an overdose of prescription pills. Methadone has some properties that make it tricky to prescribe: Its painkilling properties can fade after a few hours, yet the drug can stay in the bloodstream for days, Fingerhut says. Doctors sometimes prescribe too much methadone, or patients hoping to...

Addiction to smoking tied to genetics and biology. The link tied to smoki
2008-04-03 18:42:00
As with most health issues, the cause of many addictions and illnesses are in our genes.  Scientists have finally  pinpointed genetic variations that make people more likely to get hooked on cigarettes and more prone to develop lung cancer - a finding that could someday lead to screening tests and customized treatments for smokers trying to kick the habit:The discovery by three separate teams of scientists makes the strongest case so far for the biological underpinnings of nicotine addiction and sheds more light on how genetics and lifestyle habits join forces to cause cancer. "This is kind of a double whammy gene," said Christopher Amos, a professor of epidemiology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and author of one of the studies. "It also makes you more likely to be dependent on smoking and less likely to quit smoking."A smoker who inherits these genetic variations from both parents has an 80 percent greater chance of lung cancer than a s...

2008-04-02 19:06:00
The theme for class 6 of Oprah Winfrey 's web cast based on the book A New Earth is "learning how to break free from the pain-body by staying present and alert enough when it becomes active." Geez, that is easier said then done. If only it were that easy, we would all be free of depression and physical pain. But let's give it a try. Here is Oprah's homework for Class 6 on Monday, April 8th: Do you experience drama (periods of intense emotional negativity) on a fairly regular basis in your relationship with your spouse, partner or another close family member This week, when drama arises in the relationship described in the previous question, notice the pain-body in you and recognize it for what it is. Can you detect the pain-body in your partner or family member? The pain-body makes you reactive; makes you say and do things that are designed to increase the unhappiness within yourself and the world. The pain-body can cause disruption, illness, accidents or violenc...

2008-04-01 22:13:00
According to today's Wall Street Journal, the natural supplement SAMe( also known as S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine) may help relieve physical pain as well as help elevate mood and depression.Known as SAMe and pronounced "Sammy," S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine occurs in the body naturally. It is made from the amino acid, methionine, and is believed to be involved in many critical biochemical processes in the body. Scientists say it's an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory and even helps in the production of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters."When we added SAMe to standard antidepressants such as Zoloft or Effexor we achieved response rates of 40% to 50%," says Harvard scientist Jonathan Alpert, associate director of the Depression Clinical and Research program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The study's limitation, he adds, was that it didn't have a placebo control, and patients and doctors both knew when SAMe was added to the treatment regimen. Harvard is now conducting two...

2008-03-28 17:57:00
Most people think about the  emotional pain associated with depression. The physical pain associated with can be just as diffucult to manage. When  I was severely depressed my entire body ached. That is why I am particularly interested in Class 5 of Oprah Winfrey 's webcast A New Earth : Awakening to Your Life's Purpose with Eckhart Tolle. The class is on Monday March 31st:The pain-body doesn't want you to observe it directly. The moment you observe the pain-body, feel its energy field within you and take your attention into it, the identification is broken. A higher dimension of consciousness comes in. It is called Presence. You are now the witness or the watcher of the pain-body.The author Eckhart Tolle suggests three ways to observe and dissolve the pain-body: Watch out for any sign of unhappiness in yourself in whatever form—it may be the awakening pain-body. This can take the form of irritation, impatience, a somber mood, a desire to hurt, anger, rage...

2008-03-28 01:45:00
Do you suffer from allergies or asthma? This is a very important post if you take the drug Singulair to treat those conditions. The Food and Drug Administration said today it is investigating a possible link between Merck's best-selling allergy drug Singulair and suicide. FDA said it is reviewing a handful of reports involving mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the popular allergy and asthma drug. Merck has updated the drug's labeling four times in the past year to include information on a range of reported side effects: tremors, anxiousness, depression and suicidal behavior. The FDA said it asked Merck to dig deeper into its data on Singulair for evidence of possible links to suicide. The agency said it has not established a "causal relationship" between Merck's drug and suicidal behavior. An agency spokeswoman said the review was prompted by three to four suicide reports it received since last October. Merck said it recently added reports ...

Sometimes I  enjoy reading about celebrities or famous  who've experienced depression. It helps me realize that even those who seem to have a charmed life are actually just like me; they have their ups and downs too. When someone that I admire is able to overcome their problems that really inspires me. If you also enjoy celebrity biographies, here are a few I've just posted: Louis Anderson - comedian, actor Oksana Baiul - ice skater Rona Barrett - reporter, author Samuel Becket - writer Menachem Begin - Prime Minister (Israel) Cheyenne Brando - actress Marlon Brando - actor Barbara Bush - former First Lady (US) Truman Capote - writer Drew Carey - actor, comedian Jim Carrey - actor, comedian Winston Churchill - Prime Minister (UK) Dick Clark - TV personality (US) Ty Cobb pro baseball player Calvin Coolidge . - US President I find it interesting that several major comedians showed up on this list about famous people with depression.

Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling seriously considered suicide in her mid 2
2008-03-24 00:11:00
I admire the author J.K. Rowling of Harry Potter for her recent honest disclosure that she had suffered severe depression and had seriously considered suicide. She discussed this with a British Newspaper:The British author said she had suicidal thoughts in her mid-20s, when she was a single mum and struggling to succeed as a writer. J. K. Rowling, creator of the 'Harry Potter' series, told a school paper in the U.K. that she considered killing herself when she was a struggling single mother. "Mid-20s life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted," Rowling said, according to The Sunday Times. The newspaper said she told Edinburgh University's Student magazine that she sought help from doctors and spent nine months receiving cognitive behavioral therapy."We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking I'm a little bit miserable," Rowling was quoted as saying. The newspaper said Rowling sought medical help following her separation from first husband, Jorge Arante...

Women, Men and Depression discussed by Oprah Winfrey and psychiatrist Gail

The Oprah Winfrey Show recently featured an episode titled Women , Men and depression. Oprah's guest was psychiatrist Gail Saltz. According to psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz, author of Anatomy of a Secret Life: Are the People in Your Life Hiding Something You Should Know, major depression and dysthymia affect twice as many women as men. This two-to-one ratio exists regardless of racial and ethnic background or economic status. Although it's the same condition, it's important to note that the signs of depression in women and men can be very different.Women and Depression A variety of factors that are unique to women's lives are suspected to play a role in developing depression. Research is focused on understanding these factors, including:Reproductive, hormonal, genetic or other biological factors,  abuse and oppression, interpersonal factors, certain psychological and personality characteristics Societal factors may contribute to a woman's depression, because Dr. Saltz says wom...

Asking for help may seem like the hardest task in the world, especially if you feel exhausted and hopeless. Yet that’s just what you need to do if you have symptoms of depression or mania. Even if your symptoms are more vague or you don’t know exactly what the problem is, you may still benefit from a doctor’s opinion and evaluation. If you feel lost or stuck, or are concerned about a feeling, thought, behavior, or situation, seek help.  I didn't know where to start or even what "it" ( the problem) was. The first step is often the hardest. Talk with your doctor about your problems, or get a referral to a mental health professional from your doctor, a friend, or one of the organizations listed in the VagusNerveStimulation.com  web site.Together, you and your doctor or therapist can decide on a treatment plan to alleviate your distress. Any suicide is always shocking. This short post is about a successful suicide which took place today at the Malibu home of actor Mel Gibson:Law enforcement confirmed that  a construction worker committed suicide at one of Mel Gibson's homes today. It happened at Mel's Agoura Hills home -- near Malibu. The construction worker was 48-years-old. The police said that he had  hanged himself. The body was found by the job site foreman. The Sheriff's substation in Lost Hills took the call at 8:07 AM -- that's the same station where Mel was taken after his DUI arrest in 2006.Mel was not at the house when the body was discovered. A law enforcement source says no one from Gibson's family was living at the house -- it is currently under heavy construction Law enforcement sources say the body was found hanging in the addition to the home that was being built and was in "full-body rigor mortis" and the hanging could have occurred last night. 2008-03-18 20:07:00
Next Monday Oprah Winfrey will have her fourth class based on the book A New Earth . The class 4 excercises are really heavy, hard and probably not doable by many people including people suffering from depression. But I continue to grind through the process and over all it has been a net positive. Here are a couple homework assignments for class 4: What roles do you play at work, home, or in the world? List some of them here. What roles do you assign to others? List them, too. This week, see if you can create a space of awareness between you and the roles you most identify with.  Ok, I will give it a try 2. The more shared past there is in a relationship, the more present you need to be; otherwise, you will be forced to relive the past again and again" (p. 101). See what happens the next time you are with your parents, siblings, an old friend, an ex-lover, your grown children, etc.    For me, this is about reconnecting with family members and friends. Oprah Winfrey: how to get a good night's sleep-bedtime essentials by sleep
2008-03-18 06:59:00
Sleep disorders can effect mood, depression, memory and stress. The Oprah Winfrey   show recently discussed how to get a good night's sleep with sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, author of Good Night: The Sleep Doctor's Four-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health . Here were a few of his suggestions: A calming paint color. "Studies have shown that color can produce emotion," he says. "And so we know when we walk into a room, we want to have a sleep environment that's conducive to sleep." Also, don't use high-gloss paint. "You want a flat paint because, again, it helps with the tone of the color." The right light. Keep your same lamp, but use a 45-watt bulb. "It is not so bright that it's telling the brain that it's morning time and then you would stop producing melatonin, which is one of the things that helps you sleep," Dr. Breus says. "Another thing I have people do is put dimmer switches in their bedrooms to again...

2008-03-18 01:00:00
ScienceDaily — The nighttime breathing disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea increases a person's risk of having a heart attack or dying by 30% over a period of four to five years, according to a new study. It can also aggravate depression. The more severe the sleep apnea at the beginning of the study, the greater the risk of developing heart disease or dying, the study found. "While previous studies have shown an association between sleep apnea and heart disease, ours is a large study that allowed us to not only follow patients for five years and look at the association between sleep apnea and the combined outcome of heart attack and death, but also adjust for other traditional risk factors for heart disease," says researcher Neomi Shah, M.D., of Yale University. In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway narrows, or collapses, during sleep. Periods of apnea end with a brief partial arousal that may disrupt sleep hundreds of times a night. Obesity is a major risk factor f...

2008-03-17 00:41:00
Sleep deprivation is serious. A good night's sleep is absolutely essential for survival and daily living. It serves a critical function in learning, memory and depression. Sixty -minutes devoted an entire segment to this very important topic:Scientists are discovering that sleep is far more critical to human health than previously believed and have linked sleep deprivation to serious problems such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Lesley Stahl reported on  this double length segment.Sleep has had a major role in such major disasters as the Exxon Valdeze and the Staten Island Ferry accident. We must appreciate the role of proper sleep in psychiatric disorders such as depression, obesity and heart disease. Sleep apnea is the most common sleep disorder, followed by restless legs syndrome. If you feel that may suffer from regularly getting a good night's sleep, you must visit an M.D. and stay over night at a special sleep center.

This is some good news that every health consumer can use about Wal-Mart 's $4.00 generic drug program. In an address to the Council of Teaching Hospitals, Wal-Mart 's President of health and wellness, Dr. John Agwunobi announced that the company's $4 prescription program has now saved Americans more than $1 billion( as of March 11, 2008):"$4 prescriptions now represent approximately 40 percent of all filled prescriptions at Wal-Mart. Nearly 30 percent of $4 prescriptions are filled without insurance -- significantly higher than the 10 percent industry trend. But more importantly, this program has meant that people can now take the drugs that were prescribed to them. They no longer need to cut pills in half or not take the drugs at all."With so many uninsured Americans, this is really a remarkable milestone. Many of the $4 prescriptions include antidepressants, diabetes drugs and drugs used to treat heart disase. For further information on this wonderful ...

Sleep Disorders: Sleep and Depression-how are sleep and depression linked?-
2008-03-15 19:30:00
People are fascinated by the topic of sleep. After all we spend 1/3 of our entire life asleep. So identifying the relationship between sleep and depression is important and may help identify the underlying cause of depression:An inability to sleep, or insomnia, is one of the signs of depression. Or sleeping too much is another sign of depression.  Lack of sleep alone cannot cause depression, but it does play a role. Lack of sleep caused by another medical illness or by personal problems can make depression worse. An inability to sleep that lasts over a long period of time is also an important clue that someone may be depressed.Sleep disorders can be caused by can be caused by: stress, depression, physical illnesses that cause pain or frequent urination, substance abuse, sleep apnea, a partner who snores or simply having an uncomfortable bed. If you are depressed, everything seems black and dismal. Such bleak thoughts going round and round your head can cause your mood to get e...

2008-03-15 01:40:00
Next Monday is class #3 for Oprah Winfrey 's web cast A New Earth : Awakening to Your Life's Purpose . Looking back on my battle with severe depression, I can appreciate the value of the exercises to prepare for the class. But I can empathize with depression sufferers the difficulty of completing the workbook. It is very tough when you are in utter despair and essentially hopeless. If you can complete just a portion of the exercises, give it a try. Complaining: keep a running list of how often you complain during each day. Pay particular attention to a complaint that serves no useful purpose, This week, watch out for any underlying resentment and negative thoughts about what you are doing, which invariably implies, "I don’t want to be doing this." How would you answer this question: "Do you want peace or drama?" We all want peace, of course, and yet there might be something inside you that craves the drama, wants the conflict. Just before I was rescued from...
Heath Ledger, star of "A Dark Knight", is honored by the cast and crew.
2008-03-14 22:20:00
Heath Ledger, who died tragically from an overdose of prescription drugs was honored by his co-stars in the upcoming movie A Dark Knight . Unlike 1989's "Batman," in which the deranged, disfigured clown appearance of Jack Nicholson as the  Joker, "The Dark Knight" stars Heath Ledger as The Joker as the bad guy in all his psychopathic glory. From the movie:"I believe whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you stranger," Ledger's depraved Joker cryptically tells an accomplice in the opening scenes, in which he pulls off a daring bank robbery.Although there had been speculation among critics and fans that the studio and filmmakers might take a different approach to selling the film in light of Ledger's death, but the marketing has gone on as originally planned. "I think he'd be very pleased to see we're just moving ahead as is," Nolan said. "If you try to honor somebody, you honor them by respecting their work and putting it out t...
