25 Years of HIV/AIDS: The History of HIV/AIDS
2006-06-05 20:01:00 1981: The New York Times reported an outbreak of a rare form of cancer among gay men in New York and California. This "gay cancer" as it was referred to, later was identified as Kaposi's Sarcoma, the face of AIDS. About the same time, Emergency Rooms in New York City began to see a rash of seemingly healthy young men presenting with fevers, flu-like symptoms, and a rare pneumonia called Pneumocystis. This was the beginning of what has become the biggest health care concern in modern history. Twenty years later the disease still plagues society. How did we get to this point? Take a look at 20 plus years of AIDS.1959: While we talk about AIDS being 20 years old, in actuality it is believed that the syndrome has been around far longer. In 1959, a man residing in Africa died of a mysterious illness. Only decades later, after examining some blood samples taken from that man, was it confirmed that he actually died from complications related to an HIV infection. Full Story... 2006-06-01 01:10:00 As Burundi's public health system struggles to recover from a 12-year civil war, only a handful of the estimated 250,000 HIV-positive Burundians who need life-prolonging AIDS treatment are accessing it.Just 6,672 Burundians benefit from free anti-AIDS drugs provided by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis, but UNAIDS estimates an HIV prevalence of six percent in a population of around eight million. But the head of ARV provision at Bujumbura's Kamenge University Hospital, Dr Gaspard Kamamfu, said the free drugs, distributed via a government initiative, had prompted more people to be tested. Since February 2004, when the university's programme began, more than 500 people have been put on ARVs. Full Story... More About: Health , Staff , Lack , Rollo , Heal
