Report Shows Increase In Hospital-Treated Dog Bites
2007-07-24 14:05:00
Hospital-Treated Dog Bite sMinnesota Department of Health review of hospital records shows a 40 percent increase in hospital-treated dog bites between 1998 and 2005. The largest growth was in the number of dog bites treated in emergency departments. The highest rates of both hospitalization and emergency department treatment occurred among children ages one to four years. In 75 percent of the instances, the victim was familiar with the dog(s) involved. The dog bites most often occurred in the home (48 percent) and yard (18 percent).Hospital records used in the study seldom documented the breed of the dog. Professional journal articles cited in the report indicate that identifying a single breed as particularly dangerous can lead to a false sense of security about other breeds and does not fully address the complexity of the problem. In addition, a dog's tendency to bite is based on factors such as its early experiences, socialization, and the victim's behavior, as well as the dog'...

In 2005, the cost to Utah's health care system for OHV injuries totaled $1.5 million for treatment in emergency departments and an additional $5.9 million in hospitalization expenses. The 15-19-year age group has the highest rate of ED visits for OHV injuries at 13.6 per 10,000 population, followed by 20-24-year-olds at 10.6 per 10,000. In addition, programs will be developed that are aimed at increasing the understanding and management of oral health and the expectations of aging patients.A recent survey of AGD members revealed that dentists think tooth erosion is more common today compared to five years ago and many respondents stated that consuming soft drinks, as well as other foods with a low pH value (such as fruit juices, pickles, fresh fruit and yogurt), contribute to tooth erosion. Tooth erosion is the breakdown of tooth structure caused by the effect of acid on the teeth. Boosted Invirase Has Similar Efficacy To Boosted Lopinavir In HIV Patients
2007-07-23 13:34:00
HIV patients treated with the protease inhibitor Invirase 500 (saquinavir mesylate boosted with ritonavir) achieved similar efficacy, in terms of viral suppression and increases in CD4 cells, to those treated with lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra), while being less likely to develop elevated lipid levels. These results, from a planned 24-week interim analysis of all 337 patients enrolled in the Roche-sponsored Gemini study, were presented today at the 4th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention in Sydney, Australia.Current treatment guidelines for highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) include a boosted protease inhibitor (PI) as an option for first-line treatment of HIV-infected patients. However, PI-based regimens can be associated with varying degrees of lipid abnormalities, potentially increasing the long-term risk of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease. As people with HIV are living longer due to advances in treatment, i...

Think about secondhand smoking dangers before taking a cigarette
2007-07-19 11:28:00
There are many urgent articles in the press on the danger of smoking for the health of people, espessially those who are considered to be secondhand smokers. Despite the fact that there are many warnings concerning this phenomena and the fact that many countries continue being careless about secondhand smoking, there are forecasts about having more and more smoke-free zones in our planet in the near future. The fact is that many people today acquire deseases only because they are forced to bear a smoker at their working places, recreational areas and different public places. A survey, conducted in Oregon by the Multnomah County Health Department and Oregon Department of Human Services shows upsetting results, as it revealed that those people who work among smokers are more inclined to get lung cancer than others. The reason why it happens is a high level of carcinogen NNK in the organism which causes cancer no matter whether that person smokes or not. According to that research seco...

NYC Smoking Rate Has Declined 20% Since 2002
2007-07-19 11:25:00
NYC Smoking Rate New York City's smoking rate has plummeted since a comprehensive program against smoking was launched in 2002The 2006 rate was nearly 20% lower than the 2002 rate ? a decline that represents 240,000 fewer smokers. The City's rate for 2006 is the lowest on record (17.5%), and lower than all but five U.S. states (California, Washington, Idaho, Utah and Connecticut). Over the past year, smoking decreased among men (from 22.5% to 19.9%) and among Hispanics (from 20.2% to 17.1%). These large declines followed a year-long ad campaign aimed at prompting more smokers to quit.Beginning in 2002, and after a decade with no progress, New York City increased the tobacco tax, eliminated smoking in virtually all workplaces, and launched hard-hitting anti-tobacco ads. By all indications, the interventions have made a difference. "Hard-hitting ads work," said Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas R. Frieden ? "especially when they're paired with a tobacco tax and smoke-free air legislati...

Tobacco-Free Campus Policy Starting July 1, 2007, anyone visiting or working for the Utah Department of Health will either need to find somewhere else to light up or quit smoking. The UDOH has adopted a tobacco-free policy for its buildings and grounds, and cessation services are offered to those who want to kick the habit.'Going smoke-free is just the right thing to do,' said Dr. David Sundwall, UDOH Executive Director. 'Not only is smoke an irritant for non-smoking staff and patrons, but secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer, heart disease, and illness in children. We couldn't in good conscience allow open smoking on our grounds any longer,' he said. The goal of the tobacco-free policy is to improve the health of UDOH employees and visitors by both reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and promoting quitting. Cutting tobacco use also increases productivity, lowers absenteeism, and reduces medical and other costs associated with tobacco use in the workplace.UDOH buildings have b...
Non-Smoking Workers Absorb Potent Carcinogen When Exposed To Secondhand Smo
2007-07-19 11:24:00
Secondhand SmokeSecondhand smoke in the workplace is an unacceptable health hazard and shows why ALL workplaces must be smoke-free and ALL workers must be protected. The new study, which was released last week, finds that nonsmoking restaurant and bar employees absorb a potent, tobacco-specific carcinogen when exposed to secondhand smoke in the workplace. It also finds that levels of this powerful carcinogen continue to increase the longer the employee works in a place where smoking is permitted. This study underscores the need for Wisconsin legislators to pass a law that requires all workplaces to be smoke-free and protects all workers and the public from the serious health hazards of secondhand smoke. The study also shows why it is important that legislators protect all workers and reject loopholes and exemptions that would condemn some workers to continued exposure to the cancer-causing chemicals in secondhand smoke. All Wisconsin workers have a right to breathe clean air and deser...

As England goes smoke free, the first figures on compliance with the ban in Wale s have been revealed. The Welsh Assembly Government figures show that local authorities in Wales have reported that 99 per cent of businesses and vehicles inspected during April complied with the smoke-free requirements of the legislation. The figures up to the end of April also show that no fixed penalties have been issued. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Jewell, said that the figures show the hard work by the Assembly Government and local authorities to raise awareness of the ban has paid off.Dr Jewell said: The introduction of the ban in Wales has gone smoothly and anecdotal evidence from licensees suggests that, far from having a negative impact on sales, the initial response to the ban has been that trade has been busier. According to research carried out by Beaufort, public support has risen from 71 per cent in March 2006 to 80 per cent in May 2007. We expect compliance levels to remain close...
