Anti-Aging Regimen of Skin Care Defies Winter's Effects
2007-07-13 11:11:00
(NC) Winter weather is harsh and drying, and that means older, duller-looking skin for many of us. Protect skin from the elements by following proven anti-aging skin care and lifestyle habits. The key to protecting skin is moisturizing on a daily basis. Dry skin ages faster, so it's essential to keep properly hydrated at all times. Wash both your face and body with lukewarm water - not hot - and use a mild facial and body cleanser. After washing, apply a facial moisturizer that's appropriate to your skin type, and remember to wear sunscreen whenever you're outdoors - the sun's rays speed up the aging process. For the body, use a moisturizer that has an added firming benefit, like Curel Firming Q10 lotion, which contains coenzyme Q10, a natural antioxidant that helps defend against the signs of aging while improving skin's elasticity. For extra-dry spots like elbows and feet, try Curel Extreme Care lotion, which contains oatmeal and eucalyptus extracts for intense moisturizing.Re...

Use of Lotions and Moisturizers in Skin Care
2007-07-13 11:11:00
Moisturizing is beneficial for skin health and reducing microbial dispersion from skin, regardless of whether the product used contains an antibacterial ingredient. Because of differences in the content and formulations of lotions and creams, products vary greatly in their effectiveness. Lotions used with products containing chlorhexidine gluconate must be carefully selected to avoid neutralization by anionic surfactants. The role of emollients and moisturizers in improving skin health and reducing microbial spread is an area for additional research. To improve the skin condition of health-care professionals and reduce their chances of harboring and shedding microorganisms from the skin, the following measures are recommended:For damaged skin, mild, nonantimicrobial skin cleansing products may be used to remove dirt and debris. If antimicrobial action is needed (e.g., before invasive procedures or handling of highly susceptible patients) a waterless, alcohol-based product may be used...

7 Steps to Protect Your Skin from the Winter Sun
2007-07-13 11:09:00
What outdoor activities did you do this past summer? Maybe you went on a vacation to the beach. Maybe you spent some time playing your favorite sports such as baseball, golf, or tennis. Maybe you went swimming or had a barbeque in the backyard with family and friends. Regardless of the outdoor activities you did over the summer, most likely you were aware that it was important to protect your skin from sun while outdoors. Now winter is approaching. I am turning my attention to putting away my summer items to make room for the winter ones; long sleeve shirts for short sleeve ones, corduroy pants for shorts, and boots for sandals. Most of the sports equipment I have been using is going to get put away as well. But what about those items I have been using to protect myself from the sun? Things like my sunscreens, sunglasses, and sun protective hats and clothing. You may be putting these items away and not using them during the winter. The National Council of Skin Cancer Prevention report...

Smart Food Safety Practices Can Avoid Summertime Foodborne Illness
2007-07-13 11:08:00
Smart Food Safe ty PracticesNew Jersey residents reminded to keep a few guidelines in mind to help prevent food borne illness. As summer truly gets underway, more and more families and neighbors will be taking advantage of the weather to cook and eat outdoors. But feeding a large group of family and friends when the weather is hot can make food safety a challenge.Food borne illness is a significant public health concern in the United States. In fact, around 76 million cases of food sickness, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur each year. Especially at risk are young children, the elderly and people with diseases that involve the immune system, such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and liver or kidney diseases. "Foodborne illness cases rise during the summer because bacteria thrive in warm temperatures," said Commissioner Jacobs. "For example, what many people call-stomach flu' or intestinal virus' is often caused by food poisoning, which ...

Warm Weather Dinings Mean Foodborne Illnesses
2007-07-13 11:07:00
Foodborne Illness esNassau County Department of Health reminds residents that in the hot weather, food is more susceptible to spoilage.Temperature and time, as well as personal hygiene, are critical factors that can lead to foodborne diseases. The following are some recommendations to help prevent foodborne diseases: * When storing or transporting food, kept the food's temperature below 40 F. or above 140 F. * When preparing poultry, pork or beef, make certain it is cooked until the juices run clear. The best way to check that cooked foods are safe to eat, including those foods cooked on a barbecue, is to measure their internal cooking temperature with a chef's type of stem thermometer. Poultry should reach 165 F. on the thermometer; ground beef should reach 158 F.; pork should reach 150 F.; solid cuts of meat or fish should reach 140 F. * No cooked food, or foods which are ready to eat (salads, sandwiches, etc.) should ever come in contact with a plate, cutting board or ...

Half Of Rapid Alert System Notifications Concern Imports Rejected At EU Bor
2007-07-13 11:02:00
About 45% of notifications to the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed in 2006 concerned products from third countries which were blocked at the border by EU control authorities when the risks were identified. EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou today visited the border inspection post of Antwerp to highlight the importance of food safety controls and the EU's rapid alert system to ensure food safety. Commissioner Kyprianou presented the 2006 annual report on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) which shows that notifications on risks to food safety fell by 5% in 2006 compared to 2005. This is the first time since the establishment of this food safety tool that there has been a decrease in the number of notifications. The drop can be explained largely by effective measures taken to address illegal dyes and the application of new European criteria for certain pathogenic microbes, replacing the diverse national criteria that were in place until then. In total, 6...

Controlling Food Portions for Weight Loss
2007-07-11 11:33:00
When I was a youngster my family owned a restaurant for a period of time. That's when I first learned about portion control. Portion control is important in the restaurant business to maintain product consistency and costs. That's as true today as it was back then. But today it seems that everyone feels that bigger is better. There's a mega-biggy everything, especially at the fast food places. And when did the all you can eat buffet start? They didn't exist way back when. You just got to pig out at the buffet so you get your moneys worth. The bombardment of advertisements has given a lot of us a warped sense of exactly what a serving should be. Instead of portion control we have portion "out" of control.Just learning what a serving should be is a great first step for you if you're beginning a weight management program. Eating smaller portions of the same food you've always been eating may be the best "baby step" to take in order to lose weight. What Counts as a Serving? Brea...

Frequent Brain Stimulation In Old Age Reduces Risk Of Alzheimer's Disease
2007-07-11 11:25:00
How often older adults read a newspaper, play chess, or engage in other mentally stimulating activities is related to the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. For the study, more than 700 people in Chicago with an average age of 80 underwent yearly cognitive testing for up to five years. Participants were part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of more than 1,200 older people. Of the participants, 90 developed Alzheimer's disease. Researchers also performed a brain autopsy on the 102 participants who died. The study found that a cognitively active person in old age was 2.6 times less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease than a cognitively inactive person in old age. This association remained after controlling for past cognitive activity, lifetime socioeconomic status, and current social and physical activity.Researchers say the findings may be used to help prevent Alzheimer's disease."Alzheimer's disease is among the most feared consequ...

A Simple 100 Calories A Day Can Be The Difference In Weight Maintenance Ver
2007-07-10 09:19:00
Weight Loss ManagementWhen you think about weight gain, you probably think overeating to excess or failing to get any activity. The reality is a simple 100 calories a day can make the difference in weight gain or loss.According to the University of California Wellness Letter, the average American gains about two pounds a year. Since every pound of body weight equals 3500 calories, two pounds translates into an extra 19 calories a day. Nineteen calories is easy to surpass so if you look at the overweight incidence it's feasible to think in terms of 100 extra calories on a daily basis. Making a change in your intake that equals 100 calories is very simple, try â??Water - packed tuna instead of oil - packedOne cup of whole grain cereal instead of twoTomato slices, lettuces leaves and pepper strips on a sandwich instead of mayoTwo cups of skim milk per day instead of two cups of whole milkA cup of low â?? fat, sugar free yogurt, instead of a doughnutA cup of water flavored with a lemon...

Orlistat and Weight Management
2007-07-10 09:18:00
Diet and Weight Management When combined with diet, exercise and behavioral therapy, orlistat, a drug that decreases fat absorption, appears helpful for improving weight management in obese adolescents, compared with placebo, according to an article in the June 15 issue of JAMA.Excess weight in adolescents is associated with increased risk of hyperlipidemia and type 2 diabetes, and its prevalence is increasing worldwide, according to background information in the article. In the United Stat es, the proportion of adolescents with a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for age, a widely accepted definition of obesity in adolescents, has increased 15.5 percent to 23.4 percent in certain ethnic minorities. Overweight children are at a 15-fold greater risk of becoming overweight adults compared to children and adolescents not overweight. Pediatric obesity can be particularly difficult to treat, with long-term success depending on the type of therapy used. Orlistat is a gas...

Protein Rich Diet Boosts Benefit of Exercise
2007-07-10 09:17:00
Protein Rich Diet ProgramEveryone knows that a good weight loss program combines diet and exercise, but a new University of Illinois study reports that exercise is much more effective when it's coupled with a protein rich diet."There's an additive, interactive effect when a protein-rich diet is combined with exercise. The two work together to correct body composition; dieters lose more weight, and they lose fat, not muscle," said Donald Layman, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.A higher-carbohydrate, lower-protein diet based on the USDA food guide pyramid actually reduced the effectiveness of exercise, Layman said.Forty-eight adult women participated in Layman's 4-month study, published in the August 2005 issue of the Journal of Nutrition. One group ate a protein-rich diet designed to contain specific levels of leucine, one of the essential amino acids. A second group consumed a diet based on the food guide pyramid, which contained higher amounts of carbohydr...

Black and Low Income Women Need Tailored Weight Loss Programs
2007-07-10 09:16:00
Weight Loss Programs Weight loss programs need to be race and income specific because weight control experiences are far different between black and white women and affluent and poor women, according to a recent study.Researchers put together focus groups made up of obese women and divided by race and socioeconomic status. They found most of the women had been able to lose weight in the past, but they failed to keep it off. The white women surveyed said physical activity was their key to weight-loss success, while the black women put more emphasis on food choices. Black women in particular said weight loss programs that incorporated spiritual and psychological support would be helpful. And the low-income women surveyed said cost had been a barrier to effective weight loss for them. The study's authors said this points to a need to promote "creative strategies that educate low-[income] women on cost-effective ways to eat healthy and engage in physical activity..."Black and low-income...

Robotic Technique Shows Promise In Weight Loss Surgery
2007-07-10 09:14:00
Weight Loss SurgerySurgeons at the Stanford University School of Medicine have developed a safe and efficient way to use a surgical robot to perform gastric bypass operations. Their report, published in the August issue of the Archives of Surgery, documents the first totally robotic technique to complete this technically challenging procedure. The method, developed by associate professor of surgery Myriam Curet, MD, is an improvement on a more conventional technique called laparoscopic surgery. In both instances, specialized tools with cameras attached are inserted through small holes in the patient's body. But while traditional laparoscopic tools are held in the surgeon's hand, the robotic tools are operated remotely from a control station."It makes the surgery easier," said Curet, noting that the da Vinci robotic surgical system, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical Inc. in Sunnyvale, Calif., offers several advantages over hand-held laparoscopic tools. For example, it has a 3-D cam...

Can Nuts Equal Weight Loss?
2007-07-10 09:13:00
Weight Loss and Nuts While we search for various natural weight loss programs or a weight loss diet that is fast and quick people sometimes follow stereotypes. One of them is using nuts in a weight loss diet program.Despite nuts being high in fat and calories, new research indicates that nuts can also aid in weight loss.Researchers at Purdue University have found that adding almonds to a calorie-controlled weight loss program can assist in weight loss. Although the study was short-term and small in sample size, it does demonstrate that people were able to eat nuts and control or lose weight. How nuts control weight loss? The mechanism is still unclear, but the researchers think that the fat content in nuts may promote satiety, the feeling that you are full, or the protein in nuts may burn more calories during digestion.Nuts are high in calories but are also cholesterol-free and they provide good sources of protein, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, vitamin E and selenium. In small portions...

Low Calor ie Diet Researchers Found that Adults in Year-Long Study Lost Weight with DairyYou don't need to cut dairy from your diet to achieve weight loss success, suggests a new study published in the August issue of Obesity Research.Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that obese adults can include up to 4 servings of dairy foods per day in a low calorie diet, combined with moderate exercise, and still lose a significant amount of weight and body fat. This new randomized clinical trial compared the weight loss results of 72 obese adults following three different reduced-calorie diets: a "high-dairy" diet that included 4 servings of dairy foods (milk, yogurt or cheese) each day; a "high-dairy/high fiber/low glycemic index" diet that included 4 servings of dairy each day; and a "moderate-dairy" or standard diet that included 2 servings of dairy foods each day. After nearly one year (48 weeks), the participants in all three groups experienced significant weight loss and body fat loss, ...

Health benefits of beauty treatment

Pioneering medical research is going on at the University of Leicester into the use of Botulinum toxin - commonly thought of as a beauty treatment ? for bladder problems.Dr Douglas Tincello, Senior Lecturer at the University's Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine and Consultant Gynaecologist at the Leicester General Hospital, is carrying out a randomised trial involving injecting botulinum toxin into the bladders of women who have overactive bladder disease. The trial, which has received a grant of £158,000 from the Moulton Charitable Trust, involves women whose conditions have not improved after tablet treatment.Overactive bladder is a condition in which the bladder tries to empty itself, rather than the patient retaining control. Symptoms include having to pass water very often day and night, not being able to put off the need to do so, sudden urgency to pass water and sometimes incontinence. The botulinum toxin relaxes the bladder muscle so it cannot squeeze so hard...

Fashion and style. Do they mean one and the same thing?According to specialists in the field, fashion is actually a synonym for style or glamour. Smoking linked with aging on skin that usually is not exposed to sunlight
2007-07-03 11:53:00
In classic movies, cigarette smoking was used as shorthand to convey sultriness and beauty. In the real world, the connection between smoking and one's appearance ? as many studies have shown ? has more to do with premature signs of skin aging and less to do with glamour and refinement.A new study from the University of Michigan Health System adds another dimension to the link between cigarette smoking and skin damage. The study suggests that smoking may be associated with a higher degree of aging on areas of skin, such as that of the inside of the upper arm, that are not normally exposed to sunlight."We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced," says Yolanda R. Helfrich, M.D., lead author and assistant professor of dermatology at the U-M Medical School. The study appears in the March issue of ...

TV's beauty makeovers mask ugly truths
2007-07-03 11:53:00
From drooping eyelids and sagging breasts to cleft palates and stained teeth, the makeover experts on the ABC reality show Extreme Makeover have never met a physical imperfection they couldn't correct.Philosophy professor Cressida Heyes argues that, for all the beautification that takes place on the show, there are some ugly truths at its core. The cosmetic surgery makeover show is relatively new to the TV landscape. Heyes, a University of Alberta professor who has published an analysis of Extreme Makeover in Feminist Media Studies, says viewers should be attuned to the values being promoted by these shows.Radical makeover programs like Extreme Makeover, The Swan and Ten Years Younger sell the idea that cosmetic surgery is not about vanity but about uncovering your "authentic self." Heyes argues that they are actually working hard to enforce conformity to society's ideals regarding gender, age, class and race.

Physicians may be obstacles to breast reconstruction
2007-07-03 11:46:00
Significant differences in plastic surgery referral practices by general surgeons treating newly diagnosed breast cancer patients partially explain the low rates of breast reconstructive surgery in the United States, according to a new study. Published in the May 1, 2007 issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that only one quarter of general surgeons refer most breast cancer patients for a reconstruction consultation at the time of treatment planning.Despite the fact that insurance covers the procedure, only 16 percent of breast cancer patients treated with a mastectomy receive breast reconstruction in the US. Studies have shown that age and race predict low rates of this reconstructive procedure. However, studies also suggest that healthcare providers have an impact on utilization through their referral and information sharing practices.Dr. Amy Alderman from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and co-investigators surveyed 45...

Presence Of Hair In Skin Lesion Does Not Make It Benign
2007-07-03 11:46:00
Skin Lesions and Hair The presence of one or more hairs in a pigmented skin lesion does not guarantee that it is benign, according to a report in the March Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology."The presence of hair in a pigmented lesion should not automatically mean that the lesion under investigation is benign," Dr. Ashfaq A. Marghoob from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York told Reuters Health. "One needs to evaluate the primary morphology of the lesion in question and base one's decision on that."Dr. Marghoob and associates sought to dispel the myth of the "benign hair sign" by reporting 3 cases of melanocytic lesions that showed terminal hairs on clinical and dermoscopic evaluation, but in which the final diagnosis was invasive melanoma. In all 3 cases, terminal hair shafts could be clearly seen to protrude from the tumor, the authors report. Nevertheless, clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological examination confirmed the presence of invasive melanoma."...
