Some Facts About Osteoporosis
2008-03-04 19:18:00
My mother has one treatment a month. It is painful, and she is 'down' for three days after. In fact, it can take her a week to recover. She never took the warnings seriously. I can remember several times when she started to exercise, but then was 'too busy.' Now, it is too late. She must suffer this monthly procedure for the rest of her life - she is not 70 yet - and her father lived to 93. Ignoring the facts and the warning signs is 'not' the way to deal with this debilitating and painful chronic disease. Osteoporosis And The Facts Osteoporosis is called the silent thief because you do not experience any symptoms, the first time you know about it is when a bone snaps unexpectedly. Osteoporosis means "porous bones" and it is a condition where the skeleton becomes very fragile and the bones break easily. Simple things can cause a bone to break, such as stepping off a curb, sneezing, being hugged or even bending down to pick something up. Breakages are mainly in the hips, spine a...
You Can Lose Weight and Eat More
2008-03-04 19:15:00
This was me for years. I ballooned to 220lb while on diets. I didn't start to lose weight until I started to eat smaller meals, more often. In six months I dropped under 200lb, without exercise. But, it wasn't the number - it was the way I looked. My body tightened. I dropped several pant sizes. My legs are firmer. I've also noticed that I am sleeping better. But, the more I lose, the more I want to do - so I will start exercising soon. Before I do I will take measurements of myself, because I know that muscle weighs more than fat.I use to be very athletic, and looked as good at 160lb, as many women look at 130lb.Why Eating More Often Will Help You Lose Weight People will often look at me in disbelief when I tell them they are not eating often enough. The logical mind wants to think, "If I skip meals ... I am bound to lose weight." WRONG!!!!! There has been a ton of research that has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the body gears down and hangs on when put under this type ...

Save Money On Your Telephone Service
2008-03-04 19:12:00
Most people do not know that the internet and computer advances have created many cost effective communications products that work as good as - or better - than what we grew up with. I know that change can be difficult. Trusting new technology can be stressful, but saving money is always good. With the phone companies offering better and better phone services, few people even think of the alternative. One is the voip phone system that works with your home phone, and does not charge for long distance in North America. That is right - unlimited - untracked - long distance. The Voip phone system uses the same phone you are using now, offers the same technology, perks like call forwarding, showing numbers, blocking numbers, and all the bells and whistles - without charging for each one like the phone company does. A Voip home phone system can be purchased from the same companies that sell to business. In fact, it is possible to get one company to handle the entire setup for someone's ho...

Relieve The Symptoms of Osteosporosis and Menopause with TAI CHI
2008-03-04 19:06:00
TAI CHI is easy for anyone to start learning, no matter how out of shape or overweight you are. It is easier than yoga, and can be done in your home. I learned my first lessons in TAI CHI from tapes borrowed from the library. There is no need to push to keep up with the class, and no pressure to preform to certain standards. In fact, TAI CHI is something that can be done by beginners without being obvious newbies - like in an aerobics class. There is no strain on the knees or other joints. There is no pain. This is not a 'no pain no gain sport.' In fact, I've lost weight and built muscle after a heart operation while 'taking it easy.'Bone Loss, Osteoporosis, Depression, Menopause TAI CHICopyright © 2005 Bill DouglasEmerging medical research indicates that an ancient health therapy may be the prescription for the future. Increasingly the menopausal problems of hormonal imbalance, often resulting in bone loss, are also affected by depression and stress. Change is stressful for al...

Tips For Managing Arthritis
2008-03-04 19:05:00
Arthritis is not an old person's disease. Children have arthritis. Anyone can develop the disease. It hits people in different ways, with varying levels of pain from mild to chronic. My husband is on a full disability because of problems which were driven worse by arthritis.Pills do not work. They may for a while, but after a few bottles they stop working. This makes it harder to manage. The best advice is to try anything - try everthing.Do you have arthritis?Do you have arthritis? Insurance Problems
2008-03-04 19:04:00
My husband just had the worst problem with our insurance company. Their new quote was $1 400.00. That is $600 more than we paid last year. He called and they 'fixed' the problem. It wasn't until the insurance company sent the paperwork that we found out they hadn't made the changes. He drove 1.5 hours to the office and sat for more than an hour for his appointment. The clerk pretended she didn't know what the problem was - until my husband informed her that we went online and found three quotes $400 - $800 lower than hers. If she couldn't fix her quote then we would have to change insurance companies. As it happens they slipped in HGV Insurance from the days when we ran our business. If my husband had not pursued this problem so aggressively, we would have paid for insurance we didn't need. The online insurance companies can give you a good quote - without needing to know tons of information about you, your past, your credit rating, or your visa number - like our bank asked for...

Can You Prevent - Cure - Cancer?
2008-03-03 21:17:00
I do not have a problem with cancer in my family. Still, I work hard to stay out of the high risk groups. My husband comes from a 'high risk' family. But, when I started to look into his family's diet, exercise practices, and lifestyle. This lead me to wonder if his family's 'problem' is self induced. For one, they do not exercise. Second, they do not eat vegetables and fruit. It amazes me to think that a person can 'give themselves cancer' - or if they get cancer, they can destroy their chances of survival. The important thing to remember is that you need to start avoiding disease on a daily basis. You can't wait until you have cancer and then try to prevent it.One-Third of Cancer Deaths Could Be AvoidedCopyright © 2005 Daily News CentralOf the seven million worldwide cancer deaths reported in 2001, 35 percent were attributable to nine well-known behavioral and environmental risk factors, according to an analysis published in The Lancet.Researchers from the Harvard School ...

TAI CHI lowers BloodPressure
2008-03-03 20:05:00
I do not push TAI CHI for everyone. Some people need the 'burn' of aerobics and weight training to keep them motivated. But, TAI CHI has benefits that are not found in other health maintenance campaigns. The exercise is safe for people at all levels of fitness, at all stages of life, and in all age groups. It is fairly easy to learn, and you cannot hurt yourself if you do it wrong. Consult your doctor if you are worried, or if you already have health problems. There is very little to learn. I learned enough to stay fit in less than two hours.High Blood Pressure and Tai Chi TherapyWay back in 2003, the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine?s Oct. 9th issue reported a study finding that Tai Chi ?could decrease blood pressure and results in favorable lipid profile changes and improve subjects' anxiety status. Therefore, Tai Chi could be used as an alternative modality in treating patients with mild hypertension, with a promising economic effect.? This study laid out a way...

I am a lifecoach. My discipline enables me to help people with anger management, and ego conciousness. If people can learn to handle their emotions, and to see the world a sit is, not as they want it to be, they can improve their relationships with others.Empowerment is the key. Not everyone can manage the cost of a ife coach, that is why I often encourage them to take a look at other options. Collagen Skin Care
2008-02-29 21:58:00
I posted this because of the number of documentaries I've watched lately on skin care. I watched one where a woman 'thought' she was receiving botox, but whatever was injected into her face drained down into puffy globs at her chin. My word of warning "Do Not Attend Botox Parties."Botox is not Callogen, but you should always be careful.Collagen Skin Care Collagen has been widely used in cosmetic surgery as a healing aid for burn patients, reconstruction of bone and a wide variety of dental, orthopaedic and surgical purposes. Until quite recently Collagen as a beauty treatment has not been widely used for household cosmetic makeup. What is collagen? It is probably more popularly known in the beauty industry as being used in cosmetic surgery, like lip enhancement.Collagen is also one of the most abundant proteins found in mammals. Approximately one quarter of all of the protein in your body is collagen. Collagen is the main protein of connective tissue. It has great tensile strength,...

How to Look Younger

The first sign of aging is our skin. If we can keep our skin looking young, then we can defy age. It is not hard to keep younger looking skin. The first step is to drink lots of water. Water will add the translucence back to the skin. But, it also cleans the poisons out of our body so that our skin doesn't need to work over time to keep us healthy.I've blogged about skin care, but there are blogs devoted totally to Skin care. The biggest mistake is believing a cream will help. Three Kinds of Depression
2008-02-29 03:40:00
I guess everyone focuses on depression as the winter months stretch on, dark and dreary. I enjoy life. It is fun. I celebrate it every chance I get. I feel bad when I see someone who is depressed, trapped in sadness. I hope they will find relief.Three Kinds of Depression The concept of depression is broad and encompasses a number of different phenomena. The term is used in the vernacular to refer to a simple "blue" mood. In a medical sense it can label anything from a long-lingering feeling of hollowness to a critical situation ending in a suicide. The simple "down mood" or "bad hair day" really isn't depression at all. It's merely the experience of normal human emotions in response to external and internal factors. Every case of being sad or lonely is not an example of depression. Low feelings are normal and even healthy. Depression refers to more severe cases where those negative feelings take hold and have a more serious or lasting influence on one's well-being or ability to fun...

Depression-Home Remedies
2008-02-29 03:12:00
I prefer herbs and aromatherapy. They helped me survive depression and anxiety after my husband decided he didn't want to be married anymore. I went from a rural home, to marriage. Within six months of my husband moving us to the city, he left. I was in a strange place. In a situation I was not prepared to cope with. This caused anxiety problems I wasn't prepared for. Depression -Home Remedies Just as with anxiety, depression can be due to several reasons, and its symptoms may be quite varied. Conditions like constipation, headaches, insomnia and loss of appetite can all relate to depression and in deep or continuing instances of depression professional help is essential. This is especially so when there is no obvious reason for the feelings, a condition generally labelled endogenous depression. Aromatherapy Many oils have quite profound effects on mood, and it may be necessary to change the oil used as symptoms vary. The benefits of aromatherapy massage using diluted essential oils...
Living with Anxiety and Depression
2008-02-29 03:06:00
I've known a lot of people who suffer from anxiety and depression. There are many forms that can be healed through simple counceling and learning to let go of things that once haunted us. In many cases, it is caused by lack of problem solving skills. Once people learn how to handle money better, solve problems, deal with their emotions, and be honest with who them are, the problem clears up - In many cases. Living with Anxiety and Depression Anxiety and depression are both very serious mental illnesses all on their own. Unfortunately, they can also go hand-in-hand, making everyday life very difficult for the person who is suffering. Fortunately, if the conditions are recognized and proper help is obtained, they can be overcome successfully.Due to the nature of both anxiety and depression, understanding the signs and symptoms of the two conditions is vital for helping a person regain control of life. While one condition doesn't necessarily cause the other, it is not at all uncommon...

I have an account at FitReach. I've never tried to look into someone else's account, but you can look up suzannej if you want. Just don't disparage me for not being more active. Before you start to sweat...this is a free service. Nothing to buy. No mailing list to sign up for. This is a free online journal that helps me see the 'reality' of my exercise routine. Yes, I say reality because what I think I've done in the last month is rarely (close) to what I have really done. I am not big on exercise in the winter. But I find that I am less likely to grab a snack when I must write down what I eat. I tried this type of program in a word doc, but it didn't have the same impact. Some days I exercise, just because there is too much space in my exercise diary. Some times the diary is an excuse to get up from the computer and exercise. It is very hard some days to walk away from my job and exercise. Many people who work from home are most likely to stop working to do chores, visit, t...

I wrote a few days ago about research that tested the relationship between happiness and strokes. I mentioned that the test group were asked questions. Since then I found the list of questions. I do not have permission to post them, so I made a link to their mood questions.I am a firm believer that to live a long happy life you need to foster the relationships in your family, whether the people are nice or not. This has nothing to do with what people deserve, but the psycologicl effect that being a good person has on you.You must also continue to learn, and continue to feel useful. Beware the Payment Protection Insurance Scam
2008-02-28 16:58:00
Laying a claim for compensation is not be the first thing on a person's mind after an accident. Their first concern is usually for their loved ones. OR, it is naturally anger. But, do you understand when you are a victim? It is when you have hurt yourself because someone parked across your driveway and you slipped trying to carry the garbage around. It is when you cannot persuade your landlord to mend the roof. It is when the neighbor cuts down your tree, or their dog is ruining your yard.If you are injured or suffered a loss, even if it was not a serious 'injury' then but it forces you to change your lifestyle through something that wasn?t your fault, you may be able to make some Accident Claims. But, just being injured, even if it is serious, doesn't mean that you will be able to claim compensation, because sometimes there is no one, apart from yourself, to blame. Most compensation claims are for 'negligence' - when a person or organisation does not taken reasonable care w...

Relax - Relieve Stress - Sleep
2008-02-28 02:52:00
Do you exercise? If the answer is no, then you probably have a problems sleeping. You need to be in good physical condition for your body to work properly. Exercise not only keeps you fit, but it helps your internal organs and it helps prevent depression. All of this will help you sleep.Ten Relax ation Techniques A few good relaxation techniques can save your life, because stress is more than just unpleasant. It's also dangerous to your health. Disciplined practices such as meditation can help relieve that stress, but what if you don't have the time or motivation? Maybe you need to try a few of these simple ways to relax.1. Hug someone. Giving a hug means getting one. As long as it's from somebody you don't mind hugging you, this really can be relaxing.2. Interrupt routines. Go talk to that guy sleeping on the bench, or eat lunch on the roof. Just doing anything that breaks you out of your habitual patterns can relieve stress.3. Have a hot shower. Should You Still Work after Retirement?
2008-02-27 16:50:00
My husband started working for a temp agency last summer. He goes to work for 2 or 3 days to weeks at a time. He usually doesn't do anything stressful. The temp agency is aware of his limitation, and doesn't call him for jobs that are beyond his abilities. He started this for some 'mad money.' He didn't like not having that extra money in his pocket. Not after a life of working hard. He also started talking about being useless. I saw the signs of depression.Helping out at the factory a few days has not only kept him active, but I've notice that it helped him regulate his sleep and eating - both are vital because he is diabetic. The job has also made him happier. He comes home and talks about the job, day's events, and who he met. He laughs more and is less irritable. Reduce Stress - Reduce Debt
2008-02-27 16:40:00
I do a lot of writing about debt, mainly because I've had some of the largest financial websites as my clients for the last three years. I've written hundreds of articles on the problems caused by debt. It is alarming how many people face bankruptcy, divorce, legal action, heart attacks, and social or behavioral problems that is 100% attributed to Stress caused by debt. The sad thing is, it doesn't have to be that way. What is the difference between people who build wealth and those who are in debt? Simple - knowledge. Most people can free up 20% of their income, just by learning how to budget. This often includes a year or two of 'tightening' your belt until you have 'expendable cash.' It may also include consolidating their credit cards through Secured Loans. However, don't do it yourself. Many people think that a second mortgage is the same, but it costs more in interest. Others are looking to transfer credit cards to another zero interest - but they don't pay attention t...

Anger May Cause a Stroke
2008-02-27 05:33:00
Women are reluctant to push the issue of anger in their husbands because they are afraid to lose them. They are afraid that the man will leave them, and their fear is not always unfounded. But, letting a man rant on, without consequenses can cause a stroke in the man - or woman. The fact is, even if you do not express your anger, holding it in will still cause the health problems associated with anger. These include heart attack, stroke, death, and mental disorders. Science Daily ? ST. PAUL, Minn. Anger and other negative emotions may be triggers for ischemic stroke, according to a study published in the December 14 issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study found that people who had strokes were more likely to have experienced anger or negative emotions in the two hours prior to the stroke than at the same time the day before the stroke. They were also more likely to have reacted quickly to a startling event, such as getting out of bed...

Behavioural Disorders
2008-02-27 05:26:00
The first step to handling an angry older person is to define whether they are angry, or have a behavioural disorder. There are several that can effect and older man such as alzheimer's, bipolar disorder, brain injury, depression, headaches, hearing loss, insomnia, sleep disorders and stroke.Few people look to something like a brain injury, even a mild concussion suffered earlier in life, as the cause for mood swings. Men could have sustained a concussion in football as young men, which is causing the anger problems.Another common problem is anger from hearing or memory loss. I've seen quite a few men who don't remember saying things, or doing things, even if witnesses tell them they did. I know one man in particular who had several people tell them they 'change the truth to suit their mood' and yet the man refused to get help. The first thing I would do is check with the doctor to see if the man had a stroke. This might be the easiest to get help with, but it does involve the...

Home Security - MagnaLights
2008-02-27 05:15:00
One of the things we focus on more as we grow older is the security of our home. This can involve everything from a security system to a flood light. We hid lights in the yard, right in the grass. The light I want is a miliary one, but it is something I can have in the car to 'look around' a parking lot before I get out of the car. Why? Because a couple of years ago a man walked up to me when I got out of the car. I never saw him. He was only a beggar, but I will never forget the feeling. We are also getting one for the house. Last August a drunk was in our yard. The police wouldn't come because I couldn't tell them what he looked like, or if he was still in the yard - never again. I hate feeling helpless. It only takes some security equipment and flood lights to make me feel secure again - a small price. Life Just Keep Getting Better And Better

Are You Too Mean to Die - Take a Second Look
2008-02-27 04:48:00
Remember the movie " Grumpy Old Men " ? Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were widower neighbors whose anger and depression seemed to be the secret to long life. This popular theme in fiction, the character who is too mean to die, is based on a lie. Studies show that depression and anger dramatically increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston tested the signs of 'negative effect' against emotional well-being, or 'positive effect.' Their research found the following to be true:Happy older people have some protection against stroke. The elderly with "high levels of depressive symptoms", have more strokes than their peers who are not depressed. During the study of4000 subjects, the mixed group of black and white elderly test subjects were evaluated for positive or negative affects by answering yes or no to 20 questions. Sixteen of the statements suggested negative emotions or experiences such as "I could no...
