What Happens When One Door Closes?
2007-12-21 19:42:00
I got this note from the universe today:It's not just that when one door closes, another door opens. When one door closes, Rob, choirs burst into chorus, orchestras orchestrate, bugles bugle, marching bands march, dogs catch Frisbees, cats 'chow, chow, chow,' pigs fly, and 10,000 new doors open. Kind of makes you want a door to close, huh? -The UniverseKinda on topic for me

Calorie Restriction Weight Loss Program For Longevity
2007-12-13 03:17:00
Since the 1930’s studies show (in rodents, dogs, cows, mice, worms, spiders and monkeys at least) that by restricting calories, we can extend life. Calorie restriction also reduces the incidence of virtually all diseases of aging such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, auto-immune disorders, neurological decline and diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. (source)No tests have yet to be done on man, however, in 1991, quite by accident, 8 scientists sealed themselves up in a giant airtight terrarium in the Arizona desert for a 2 year experiment on self sustaining ecosystems called Biosphere 2 and quite quickly found that indeed, they could not grow enough food to support themselves.Roy Walford, the team’s physician, had been studying calorie restriction diets for a number of years and convinced his fellow scientists to give it a try. I don’t really think they had a choice. When their project ended and they exited the bubble … tests proved them h...

What A Golf Ball And String Can Teach You About Life
2007-12-11 22:14:00
Duration 3:48Resources:Start Strong MondaysStart Strong ArchivesRed Hot MetabolismMy Interview With ShawnListen for the Key Moment:What did the golf ball on the string teach Tom about what really matters?[Rob's Note:] I think getting hung up on the past, what we were, what we used to do, be or have can get us down. It's not about what happened yesterday, last week, month or year, but about what we choose to do today and tomorrow that makes us who we really are.I've fallen into this trap and beat myself up good a number of times.know what?I'm looking forward to what today brings. Getting to the gym today, getting out for my walk today, eating great whole food meals today, drinking plenty of distilled water today.I'm focusing on today and tomorrow so that I can become my best today.

McDonalds Advertising On Report Cards - Get Good Grades - Get a Happy Meal!
2007-12-10 20:08:00
About 20 million children in the United States qualify as overweight or clinically obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and now 37 schools in Seminole County, Fla. are contributing to it through a corporate-sponsorship program that awards high-achieving students with McDonald Happy Meals. The "report card incentive," as the program is known, is explained on the front of specially produced envelopes bearing the image of Ronald McDonald and in which the report cards for every student in the county's 37 elementary schools are sent home. The incentives are described as "food prizes," and a report card of all A's and B's or an attendance record blemished by just two absences is enough to earn a student a free Happy Meal.sourceJohn Banzhaf III, a law professor George Washington University says The next thing the school should offer is cigarettes and alcohol. … Why aren't schools selling Hustler or Playboy magazines out of vending machines too? sleep deprivation and weight gain: How does it happen?
2007-12-07 01:12:00
By Tom Venuto, CSCS, NSCA-CPTwww.BurnTheFatbook.comYou've probably seen the magazine articles or news blurbs that say, "lack of sleep can make you fat!" There is a lot of confusion however, about the mechanism. It's not uncommon for people to believe there is a cause and effect relationship between sleep deprivation and weight gain. However, if that were the case, then you would always gain weight if you slept less even if your food intake stayed the same. To the contrary, if you sleep less AND eat less, rest assured you will lose weight. If you are awake more hours and you are more active during those increased waking hours, again, rest assured you will lose weight. Almost all the research on this subject has been cross sectional and therefore does not prove causality. We Eat More When We're Sleep DeprivedResearch suggests that the likely explanation is a disruption in hormones which can affect appetite and food intake so you are more likely to eat more when you are sleep depri...

Get Kids Vaccinated Or Go To Jail?
2007-12-01 06:57:00
Fox News, USA Today, and a number of other major media outlets reported this week on news from Maryland where dozens of parents were notified by a district court that either they vaccinate their children or go to jail. The media reports have caused a lot of confusion around the U.S. among parents who have chosen not to vaccinate their children for certain illnesses based on concerns about possible negative impacts from the vaccines themselves. While the mainstream medical community claims vaccines are safe and effective, some people blame immunizations for a rise in autism and other medical problems. In actuality, there are no federal laws requiring vaccinations. Providing schools with vaccine exemption forms for your child is all that is required by federal law. If you have thoroughly researched the vaccine issue and have decided one or more vaccines may not be right for your children, follow this link to a website where you can download exemption forms for your state or country.

3 Healthy Choices That Aren't So Healthy
2007-11-23 21:07:00
A mens health article begins with the premise that if a product is labeled healthy, that it must be good for you. They begin with this logic: 1. Fat-free foods are healthy. 2. Skittles are fat-free. 3. Therefore, Skittles are healthy. Make sense? Of course not. But it's exactly the type of reasoning that food manufacturers want you to use.My girlfriend and I long stated that just because a product is for sale in an organic grocery, that it is not necessarily good for you. We shopped at a local organic grocery that was eventually bought out by a chain. The original store, "The Big Fresh" had a policy that it would not carry any genetically modified foods or anything with artificial sweeteners in it. The new chain, Planet Organic does not carry the same policy. I'm not saying that it's all bad, because it isn't. I still shop there, however, I'm reading labels much more carefully. We have been bombarded with "fat free" marketing for a couple of decades now and as most of us ha...

Milk From Cloned Cows - Anyone?
2007-11-17 01:36:00
The Senate is still wrangling over the 2007-2012 Farm Bill. One new consumer-friendly amendment, vehemently opposed by the biotech industry, would force the FDA to reverse its current controversial regulations on milk from cloned animals. Despite widespread opposition from the OCA and other consumer groups, the FDA has approved the commercialization of milk from cloned animals as "safe" and will not require labels. The newly proposed Mikulski amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill would require the FDA to place a temporary moratorium on cloned milk and examine its potential health hazards for animals and humans. We have updated our Farm Bill alert to address this issue. Take action, contact your Senators

Benefits of Being Vegetarian - Part 3

Dark Chocolate Part Of A Vegetarian Lifestyle
2007-11-15 23:26:00
Should dark chocolate be part of a vegetarian of vegan lifestyle? Sure why not?A report in the journal of the American medical association from 2003 says that dark chocolate indeed does offer antioxidants that help lower blood pressure in those with moderate high blood pressure. And of course, the findings show that milk interferes with the absorption of those antioxidants (as it does with all nutrition of course), so avoid chocolate with milk in it. Actually, just plain avoid milk ok?In a report in a 2003 copy of nature, Mauro Serafini, PhD saysOur findings indicate that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate ... and may therefore negate the potential health benefits that can be derived from eating moderate amounts of dark chocolate. So eating chocolate isn’t so bad for us. Choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate and choose a good Cabernet Sauvignon to go with it.My Advice, just as you should choose the the best red wine, choose the best dark cho...

Benefits Of Being Vegetarian Number 2
2007-11-14 23:24:00
This week is the Vegetarian Challenge week, I'm doing a series of Benefits Of Being Vegetarian.Number 2 on my list:You're The Freak At The Party Normally something you would want to avoid, in this case, your eating habits and choice of food groups (or lack of food groups) is always reason for starting a conversation.Kinda shy? Want to meet that hot chick or guy over by the snack table? Easy, just go up and say "I'm vegetarian - what kind of vegetables do they have here?"One of two things will occur. You'll either get a smile from him or her or suddenly become outcast and kicked out of the party.Either way, you started a conversation and are getting a lot of attention. Now imagine a party with Carrie Underwood at that same snack table. Imagine saying the same thing again "I'm vegetarian - what kind of vegetables do they have here?" and you'll probably get a different response. Carrie was voted sexiest vegetarian in 2005 and again this year 2007. She may very well say ...
How Important Is Self Confidence?
2007-11-14 18:11:00
By Zach Bashoreauthor of No BS Bodybuilding aka Bodybuilding for the Average JoeHaving high self-confidence is important because it gives you the mind set that what you are doing is the right way and nobody's negative opinion about you can change that. Most high levels of self confidence comes from past successes and also the ability to believe in oneself. In order to perform at your highest potential, high self confidence must be in place.Every successful person has a plan, a plan to become better at whatever they do in the future. That is where high self-confidence comes in handy. You don't want to start the day not knowing what you want out of it. Instead, you should be controlling every minute, using that time as a means for improvement. There is a downside to being successful and that is being expected to perform at that same great level at all times. This takes maturity on your part but you should use this as motivation. When great things are expected from you, expect more re...

My 90 Percent Vegetarian Diet
2007-11-14 04:05:00
I recently got a reply to one of my posts from a reader who was so happy to have me back as a vegetarian and expressing her sadness at having lost me a few years ago (lost to vegetarianism). I laughed, in a good way. It’s nice to have a great group of people of like mind making a conscious decision about their health and the effect on our planet.I’m not 100% vegetarian and I don’t promote 100% vegetarian though.I should be clear that I’m not against being vegetarian either. I’m not in a place anymore to be completely against animal protein any more but rather feel that it’s all about eating healthy and that eating being easy and effortless. What I do promote and you’ll be hearing about more and more is about a 90% - 10% vegetarian – meat based diet. I still don’t have a name for it really and it’s not 90% vegetarian per day, its more in line with cave man eating, that is 5 to 7 days ore more of vegetarian / vegan meals followed by a couple of days of a diet ple...

What To Do With Leftover Halloween Candy
2007-11-02 01:22:00
Halloween is over and you might have some leftover candy lying around. Most other diet, nutrition or weight loss blogs would discuss throwing the candy out or some other method of teaching you to be careful about not going off the deep end and eating it all.I found another solution that gets rid of your candy without actually throwing it out.Consider it the Eco-Friendly option of Halloween Candy Giveaway. Most cities have programs for inner city people helping them protect them against the transmission of HIV or other shared needle related disease. As it turns out, during withdrawal, candy is used to help. Donated treats will be provided to individuals dealing with withdrawal symptomsDonating your candy to one such outreach program in your city is a great way to get the candy out of your house and give back to your inner city.In Edmonton, one such program is offered by Street WorksMake a difference by donating your leftover Halloween treats to Streetworks. Preventing Cancer
2007-11-02 00:34:00
Preventing cancer has become big business, at least for the fund raisers anyway. I joined Facebook this spring and have been invited to various breast cancer causes, been asked to donate money for Run For The Cure cancer awareness marathons by at least two friends and in the past month found out a friend has cancer, a cousin’s husband has cancer and another friend was rushed into the hospital for testing on his Thyroid (it was benign).I don’t support the fund raisers, not ever, I feel very strongly against supporting the fund raisers who have no intention of providing a solution and who's only interest is in raising money. What I will do is support the "Make a Wish Foundation" which provides wishes for terminally ill children.I’m not sure if you’re aware or not, but there are known ways to prevent cancer and reverse cancer, but there’s more money in keeping us sick, so you won’t really hear too much about it.I have a friend who provided a way to end cravings for smoki...

Just this morning we did pumpkin pancakes, but it won't be released until this weekend.Visit my other blog for more Halloween Tips.
