Juices that are good for your stomach
2006-10-28 22:14:00
Well if you have heartburn you know that most of juices are not for you. Orange and apple juices were my favorite ones - but now I have to pass them since they cause heartburn even in mild quantities. Here is a list of replacements I like: Pear juice - the best one - no heartburn at all. I get this one in Whole Foods which is super expensive. If you have any idea how to get it cheaper let me know. Apricot juice, pear juice, mango juice - all of them are not very acidic. But you should see for yourself how you react to them. Birch sap - I used to drink it when I lived in Belarus but I have no idea where to find it in US. Also you can try nectars - they are the same as juices but less concentrated - so they maybe easier on your stomach. For a while I also tried acidic juices diluted by water. They are less tastier than originals but much better for stomach. Take a look at complete list of foods which cause/not cause heartburn at Food Database.

Beer and heartburn - is it compatible
2006-10-25 08:01:00
Lots of books and websites recommend stop alcohol completely. Well it may work for some people who didn’t drink before - but what to do if you like some alcohol drinks.  In my case after some experiments I figured out that I can drink pretty much any unfiltered wheat based beer without hurting my stomach. Well it still hurts if you drink too much but one glass of Heifeweizen is great to relax after work week. Also some drinking will make you more relaxed and will actually reduce your chance of heartburn. With wine it is actually more complex. Pretty much all wine in US is acid. Non-acid wine like drinks are ports and dessert wines. If you want to try start with Madeira wine (look for sweet version - no dry or semi-dry ones). It is sweet Spanish wine with great taste. Any 40% drinks are pretty hard on stomach so it is better to avoid them. Though it may be different in your case.

More stuff that works for me - you probably would never guessed what is it
2006-10-24 09:38:00
Let me give you some more food to try. Hopefully this will help you heartburn. This is the only food out of milk family which works wonders for me. It is cottage and farmer cheese. Note that you have to select non-acid cottage and farmer cheese. Cottage cheese is usually non-acid (especially when you eat with some fruits or jam). But select farmer cheese with carefulness - sometimes it is a bit acid and may cause heartburn. This was one of the best heartburn relieving foods for me. Since it is milk based - it is alkaline with lots of calcium and naturally reduces acid in your stomach. And it is not liquid as milk but solid which causes it to absorb acid much better and not allow it to get to your esophagus. Also cottage cheese is very healthy - there are lots of nations in the world which diet has cottage and farmer cheese in it. Cottage cheese could be easily found in your local grocery store (pick organic - it usually tastes better). Farmer cheese is not that easy to find - but y...

Reducing incidences of your heartburn
2006-10-23 10:41:00
Tried to recap couple of things that helped me to bring heartburn under some form of control:- I stopped eating too late. Well it was hard but it is the most effective one. Now if I eat late I don’t go to bed approximately 2 hours after that. Sometimes that could be hard - but I know that if I break this rule I will have bad taste in my mouth next morning. And if I do this couple weeks in a row my heartburn occurences will jump- Stopped eating acid food at all. Before I tended to try it from time to time to check if it would work. But after some experiments I know that “it won’t work” at least for now. It is interesting that story is pretty much the same as with eating late. If you GERD is under control it won’t hurt to have something acid once. But if you keep doing it then it will get back…

Honey - does it help?
2006-10-23 10:41:00
Several sites on the internet claim that honey is a cure for heartburn. Is it? It never actually worked for me. It looks like honey is being marketed by some people as cure for everything. It doesn’t though. I don’t want to say that it isn’t a great food and very healthy one. But I wouldn’t make a drug out of it.Though if you want to try - go with natural honey. What you see in most grocery stores isn’t a real honey. Usually it is either artificial or pasteurized. Well it is clear that artificial honey won’t help you at all. As for pasteurized one the process of pasteurization warms honey to certain temperature to kill bacteria. The problem with that approach is that most of minerals and chemicals which honey is famous for break down in this temperature. And honey becomes just a sugar after this.So if you really want to try real honey go to the farmer’s market or Whole Foods and look for raw honey.

Air swallowing is not the cause heartburn
2006-10-23 10:40:00
According to following study belching is not the cause of acid reflux. So if you belch more it won’t make your heartburn worse. Researchers measured how many times people with heartburn belch versus people with healthy stomach. Patients with gerd had 287 occurences of air swallow why healthy people had 176. Also patients with gerd had 52 occurences of belching while healthy people had 32. But when researches infused some air into patients’ stomachs it didn’t worsen symptoms of acid reflux. Same happened with healthy people - no increase in reflux at all.So if you belch more today it doesn’t mean your heartburn would be worse. On a personal note I saw quite an opposite connection. When I belch more I have less heartburn… Strange isn’t it?SOURCE: American Journal of Gastroenterology, August 2006
