The Importance of Keeping a Medical Journal
2008-02-06 05:28:00
I had thought that I had a lot of experience being an "advocate" for a sick person. After all, I unfortunately had a lot of practice with doctors and hospitals, as a result of my daughter Christine's decade long struggle with Lupus. Click to read more ...

Pregnancy & Fibromyalgia: Lessons Learned and Other Random Thoughts
2008-02-04 23:28:00
I?m not an expert. And one thing I am sure of is that everyone is unique, one?s body reacts to things in her own way, and that there is no predictability of what?s going to happen. Having a 15-month-old son, I think back on the whirlwind of pregnancy, remembering things I wish I had known just so I could prepare and know what I might be up against. I?m sharing these thoughts in hopes that someone out there will be able to make the pregnancy trip just a bit more smoothly. Just to be clear, having my baby is a lifelong dream. I want to have many more as soon as I can! But, for me, knowledge is power and hopefully I can be of some service to those out there who were in the same position as me: desperately wanting children, already having made that choice to build a family, but have no clue what might come with this new transition in life. Sex and Politics: Safe, Covered, and Totally Satisfied.
2008-02-04 09:39:00
Sometimes I have to compare politics to sex. Politics can be confusing and scary, but when I look at it from a biological point of view, somehow everything seems to fall into place. Therefore, if this ongoing debate between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama is one romp in the sack, then Thursday?s Democratic debate was when my hormones began pumping for the final goal: a woman to get on top and win. Love Can Be a Rice Ball
2008-01-27 01:13:00
In my family I was always the one the children went to for hugs and kisses. I was the mush, the softie, the emotional dishrag. My husband on the other hand was the cool one who sometimes was even perceived as distant. We are ying and yang, Mars and Venus and most of the time it works for us, that is when we aren't arguing with each other about how we uniquely handle things. Click to read more ...

Movie Review: I am Legend
2008-01-17 07:35:00
I have been a big Will Smith fan since he was in the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" I think he's smart and funny. He's a pretty good actor too, so it doesn't hurt that he's also pretty cute! Whenever he comes out with a new movie, I am usually interested in going to see it, so I have seen most of his movies, except for Wild Wild West, which just didn't appeal to me. The After Holiday Crash
2007-12-31 03:12:00
My daughter Christine has Lupus and she thinks she is invincible. She tries to overcompensate for the times she feels like hell, by being Superwoman, Supermom and Martha Stewart, all rolled into one. In the weeks preceeding Christmas her home looked like a Winter Wonderland, tastefully decorated with snowmen and snowflakes. She had her precious daughter Olivia's picture taken with Santa and her photo cards were out on time- way before mine. Chris even managed to buy and wrap over 40 gifts and bake about 10 dozen batches of cookies. She definitely had the Spirit of Christmas and her energy level seemed nothing short of a Christmas miracle. Click to read more ...

How to Make Achievable New Year Revolutions
2007-12-20 00:27:00
The annual tradition of making New Year 's resolutions can be a source of stress for those with a chronic illness. Sometimes we're just so overwhelmed with getting through the day, that committing to more demands on our time and psyches seems unfathomable. And to some, forcing ourselves to adhere to a list of rules and regulations smacks of unrealistic expectations. But it doesn't have to be that way. Click to read more ...

Surviving Dry Itchy Winter Skin
2007-12-18 23:22:00
We all know the feeling - we kick on the furnace for the winter and within days our skin starts screaming... loudly... for attention! It "screams" by getting dry and itchy, developing rough flaky patches, and just generally acting cranky! We have to DO something - we rush to buy the latest, greatest moisturizer - shell out the big bucks for whatever the magazines and TV or our next door neighbor says will WORK. Trouble is, it doesn't. We are still dry, we still itch, our skin seems to drink in the moisturizer insatiably. WHY? Click to read more ...

The title of this new cookbook might not immediately grab you with it's lowercase lettered title and the concept of low salt dishes. 4 Reasons Why I Love to Shop Online During Christmas, and Why You Should To
2007-12-06 22:12:00
1. Free shipping! I think my UPS man assumes I have a crush on him. I don't want to date him, but I do love that he delivers heavy packages right to my door. It is cold, shopping bags are heavy and I hate parking in crowded lots. It is really that simple. Most stores are now online and most offer free shipping. Why drag myself out in the cold, walk with pain, deal with crowds and lines, when I can get the same item delivered to my door within days. I used to have to beg friends to hold my shopping bags when my arms got too tired. I used to have to plan rest breaks from walking and shopping. Now I sit at home and wait for the packages to come to me. Ah, I love the internet! (If you are a store owner please note that I am swayed to shop at online stores that do offer free shipping over those who don't) Click to read more ...

Book Review: Everyone's Guide to Cancer Survivorship: A Road Map For Better
2007-11-21 23:33:00
Authors: R.N., Holly Gautier, M.D., Ernest H. Rosenbaum Right away this book's title caught my eye. The idea of a book being written from the positive point of view of "survivorship" is wonderful but unfortunately rare. Patients and loved ones want answers on not only how to get better, but what to do once they do get better.

Product and Service Review: forgetmeneversolutions.com
2007-11-18 00:33:00
For us "spoonies," trying to remember our day to day tasks is hard enough. But trying to remember dates, special occasions and gift giving is close to impossible, especially with the fog that sometimes comes with being sick or as a side effect of medications. We want to be thoughtful, but just don't have the energy to get to the store or remember the special events in everyone's lives. I think I may have found a solution!

Product Review: tottooparlor.com Baby and Kids Clothes
2007-11-09 21:35:00
I think I am going to go broke! I have a new shopping addiction. I just had a baby and just and I thought I would be sick of pink and lace and "babyish" clothes- I am so happy I found tottooparlor.com. I think I may be addicted. I love that the styles and patterns are all clothes that I would wear or pick out and now I can find "matching" stuff for my daughter! I think that many times when you become a mom, there are certain expectations of how you should dress, or your baby should dress. I think it is so much fun to keep your individual style, still be a "mom" and pass that unique style on to your kids. If you do not stay "true to who you are" and what you like, how can you expect your kids to?

What is the meaning of giving?
2007-11-07 21:59:00
We are coming upon the time of year when people are more giving and thoughtful of their fellow humans all around them. A time of year where people reflect on their lives and wonder what a new year may bring. So where did the other ten months go? What is so different about now?

Essay: In Praise of Ringo Starr
2007-11-06 06:42:00
Let?s face it: struggling with an invisible disease like Epstein-Barr and Chronic Fatigue can make you feel ?Less Than?. Less Than Normal. Less Than Worthwhile. Less Than Zero. In fact, most people who believe in metaphysics (the idea that your inner thoughts create your outer circumstances) call this the ?Disease of Low-Self Esteem.? They may have a point. I know that every day I have a flare-up, I struggle with the guilt of not being "like other mothers" of four-year-old sons; parking us in front of Playhouse Disney on a sunny day instead of running around the park; microwaving day-glow orange pasta on a rainy night when every fiber of my love-to-cook being wants him to have fond memories of my homemade mac n? cheese when he grows up. I have always had this insane drive to be "The Best" at everything I did: the Best Writer, or the Best Decorated House at the Holidays. I hated falling short of other people's expectations ("It's noon and you aren't dressed yet?", "You're ca...

Lupus Walk 2007 Update Team Miserandino (with pics)
2007-11-03 07:54:00
14th Annual Walk -Along for Lupus was on Sunday October 21, 2007. It was a sunny and breezy beautiful day. As of November 2, 2007, The Lupus Alliance has received over $246,000.00!!!! Every day there is more money coming in! (You can still donate to our team) I was happy to hear that our team - The Donato-Miserandino Team was once again one of the highest raising family teams. I was so proud to have so many people walk with me there that day, and support us through out the past month or so in my fundraising efforts. I believe that my team has raised well over $8,500 and I have more checks and donations that have come in late. It feels great to once again (This being our 12th year walking) to raise funds for this great cause. I want to give back to the organization that has helped me and countless others. But it also was an amazing feeling to be walking with family, friends, Alumni sorority sisters, and butyoudontlooksick.com friends.
