Breast Cancer and Middle Eastern Women
2007-10-28 05:12:00
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - One Saudi woman ignored the cancer growing in her breast because she didn't want to risk a referral to a male doctor. Another was divorced by her husband on the mere suspicion she had the disease, while a third was dragged away from a mammogram machine because the technicians were men.Breast cancer is still considered a taboo in oil-rich Arab Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia even as the disease claims more and more victims, but some women are pushing for greater openness about the illness.Their efforts received a boost this week: a visit from U.S. first lady Laura Bush to the region to raise awareness for breast cancer.Full story here. This story really saddens me. About 70% of breast cancer cases go unreported in Saudi Arabia until they are in the late stage. 30% of the patients are under 40 years old compared to only 5% in the US.The saddest thing about the whole thing is that everyone in Saudi Arabia has access to free health care and the country has the b...

Chinese herbs for relieving menstrual pains
2007-10-28 04:50:00
HONG KONG - A study involving nearly 3,500 women in several countries suggests that Chinese herbs might be more effective in relieving menstrual cramps than drugs, acupuncture or heat compression.Australia-based researchers said herbs not only relieved pain, but reduced the recurrence of the condition over three months, according to the Cochrane Library journal.“All available measures of effectiveness confirmed the overall superiority of Chinese herbal medicine to placebo, no treatment, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), OCPs (oral contraceptive pill), acupuncture and heat compression,” said lead author Xiaoshu Zhu from the Centre for Complementary Medicine Research at the University of Western Sydney.Full story here.I have always prefered a more natural alternative to drugs, if the natural alternative is proven effective. Some of the Chinese herbs used in the concoction were Chinese angelica root (danggui), Szechuan lovage root (chuanxiong), red peony root (chishao)...

Effects of Dioxin Pollution
2007-10-21 00:16:00
TORONTO (Reuters) - More girls than boys are born in some Canadian communities because airborne pollutants called dioxins can alter normal sex ratios, even if the source of the pollution is many kilometers away, researchers say.Dioxin exposure has been shown elsewhere to lead to both higher cancer rates and the birth of more females.Researchers at the IntrAmericas Centre for Environment and Health say their findings, released this month, confirm the phenomenon in Canada.Read the full story here.As if we don't have enough to worry about! :-( I don't think the fact that more girls than boys being born is all that much to worry about, but the cancer risks associated with dioxin pollution is something everyone should be worried about.I was born and raised in a town that had an oil refinery. For a long time the refinery caused severe pollution in a small river near where it was built because refinery waste was dumped into the river. Naturally the pollution was not confined to the r...

Liquid Vitamins
2007-10-13 19:55:00
How many of you like to pay more than necessary for a product or any product for that matter? I don't. One way I have found that really saves me money is to get my vitamins and food supplements from the discount vitamin supplement store or direct from the manufacturer.Liquid Vitamin Stop is one such store. At this store the vitamins and supplements that they carry are in liquid form, not the usual tablet form that most of us are familiar with. Liquid supplements are absorbed and assimilated faster than pills which means less loss of the nutrients through natural flushing of the body. For those with difficulty swallowing tablets, or digesting tablets, the liquid form is the best form of taking the vitamin supplements. Many of us who are looking for more natural remedies for our ailments and for maintaining our health rely on Natural Vitamin Supplements that are made from the highest quality ingredients and nutrients to hep us do so. The best part of this is that we do not have t...

Microderm Abrasion
2007-10-03 22:42:00
One of the most useful beauty products that I was introduced to recently is the Beauticontrol Microderm Abrasion Set.I have been using the product in conjunction with Beauticontrol Skinlogic Gold skin care set for about 7 months now. I wished I had been introduced to these products sooner!I have noticed a marked improvement in the overall appearance of my facial skin. It is a lot smoother, the lines are greatly reduced and even the dark spots associated with aging are becoming lighter. Dare I say, I have a more radiant looking skin? YES!I can't wait for my sisters-in-law to notice the difference in my appearance when I see them again next year. They know I am not the kind of person who spends a lot of money on beauty products, nor am I the kind of person who goes to beauty salons for facials and the like. With the Microderm Abrasion set, I can do my own facial spa at home without having to spend the big bucks for a similar treatment at the salons. The discounts that I get for bei...
Crystallized Ginger
2007-09-29 23:15:00
In the past, I had used ginger for relieving my digestive problems, especially problems with gas, and had always found it very beneficial. What I did was heat a chunk of mature ginger over a flame, pound it to flatten it, put it in a cup and add boiling water to it. I would drink it like I would drink any tea, and as a sweetener I sometimes added a teaspoonful of honey.Last Wednesday, I bought a small bag of crystallized ginger from a vendor at the local flea market. I liked the product that I had bought because the ginger used was mature and therefore had the strong hot/spicy taste. It worked wonders for my gas problem.Other than eating the crystallized ginger like you would any candy, you can also put a few pieces in a hot cup of water and drink the water like you would with ginger tea. It works just as well for relieving your gas problem.Ginger is also beneficial for the treatment of motion sickness, nausea associated with pregnancy, and holds potential benefit in the treatme...
Treating suspected yeast infection
2007-09-28 21:22:00
Many women use over the counter medication to treat suspected yeast infection. Over the counter medication is usually sufficient and effective in treating yeast infections. But there are many women who don't actually have a yeast infection but use over the counter yeast infection medication to treat their persistent vaginal itching. Repeated use of over the counter yeast infection medication can in fact cause harm. The normal flora of the vagina can be altered by overuse of OTC remedies leading to other health problems like drug-resistant strains of Candida which are becoming increasingly common.Women who think they have persistent yeast infection actually do not have a yeast infection and their problem could be due to sexually transmitted infections, dry skin, or inflammation. Women need to see a doctor or nurse practitioner and have a pelvic exam and lab tests, if necessary.Source: Reuters Health

FDA Warning against Red Yeast Products
2007-09-21 00:02:00
I was quite concerned when I read the press release issued on August 9, 2007 by the FDA warning consumers not to buy three Red Yeast products being sold on the internet.I have a bottle of Red Yeast that I bought from my favorite manufacturer, Wondelaboratories. It is not on that list but I am concerned if the bottle I have also contained the drug lovastatin which is found in red yeast. It does not say on the bottle that lovastatin is in the product so that is a good sign.Drugs are regulated by the FDA and since dietary supplements do not come under the same regulation, any red yeast sold that does contain lovastatin is illegal.Lovastatin is the active ingredient that helps lower blood cholesterol and if the red yeast that I have does not contain the active ingredient, then what good is it for? Definitely not for lowering cholesterol! Might as well chuck it away, eh! The dietary supplement should also not be promoted as a cholesterol lowering product if it does not do what it cl...

Preventing Computer Related Stress Injuries
2007-09-14 20:46:00
I have been spending a lot more time than usual in front of my computer this past couple of months. The result? Pain in my right shoulder, and numbness in my right arm and wrist! :-( Even my eyes are beginning to feel the strain. My right eye is tearing up more than usual. For the pain in my right shoulder, I have even resorted to taking muscle relaxants to ease the tension on my shoulder. There have been times when the numbness in my right arm got so bad that I had to stop working on my computer. What I am experiencing is what is known as computer related stress injuries. According to a research published in 1997 by a scientist at San Francisco State University, people who use a mouse with their computer suffer more than twice as much muscle tension in their arms, necks and shoulders as those who don't use a mouse. :-( I prefer to use the mouse than the touch pad pointer on my laptop computer because the touch paid strained my muscles in my palm and fingers. Looks like...

The right bra matters when exercising
2007-09-13 20:22:00
Did you know that ordinary bras don't quite do the job of supporting bouncing breasts during exercise?A new study claims that women's breasts can bounce up to eight inches vertically during exercise. Wow! That much bouncing can definitely be painful for those with large breasts! This story reminds us to use the right kind of bra when doing exercise especially the kinds of exercise that tend to make the breasts bounce more than usual. The good news in this story is that the researcher is "working with major bra manufacturers in Britain and globally to design a bra that minimizes breast movement in all three dimensions. The next bra, she hopes, will incorporate "smart materials" that can change to provide custom-made support for each woman and her activity level."Each woman walked, jogged and ran while wearing different bra types. During the exercise, Scurr took biomechanical measurements, including the amount of breast movement in three directions: up-and-down, side-to-side and i...

Fragrance
2007-09-13 19:44:00
I love perfumes but I don't buy them often. So far I have been disciplined enough to buy my perfumes at duty free shops when I travel. The last bottle of perfume I bought, at a duty free shop in San Francisco, was 100 ml J'adore by Dior. That was my first Dior perfume and I love the scent! I had always preferred Estee Lauder, but ever since I saw and tried my friend's J'adore, I couldn't resist getting a bottle for myself. A good friend of mine gave me a 50 ml bottle of Dior Addict on my birthday last year. :* Fabulous!I mentioned earlier that I love White Musk by The Body Shop. I found out later that there is a Body Shop at one of the malls in Sacramento. I've only been to the mall once this year and I thought I saw The Body Shop there but wasn't sure. Anyway, I'd like to go to The Body Shop sometime soon and get my White Musk perfume oil and another called Dewberry. A former colleague loved to wear Dewberry, and I loved the fruity smell. I will always think ...

'Tai chi' Lowers Blood Pressure For Older Adults
2007-09-12 00:53:00
When I read that Tai Chi can lower blood pressure for older adults, I was quite excited. I hate to exercise. I have an exercise bicycle in my bedroom and the handles are used to hang my handbags! I don't mind walking but Doug, my husband, has yet to build a walking path for me around the perimeter of our property.I thought a Tai Chi instruction video would be helpful and I immediately started searching for a site that sells Tai Chi videos. I found one but it was very expensive. Then I remembered, hey, since I have a Netflix subscription why not check to see if Netflix carry any Tai Chi videos? Voilá! There were several videos on Tai Chi and there was even one for Tai Chi For Older Adults! I am not a senior citizen yet, but, physically speaking, I might as well be one! That Tai Chi video is now at the top of the queue on my Netflix account.

I love The Body Shop products and I still have some massage oil that I bought from one of The Body Shop stores in Malaysia. White Musk is my favorite fragrance from The Body Shop. :-) Where I live right now, I have not seen any Body Shop stores.I am sorry to hear of the passing of the founder of The Body Shop, Anita Roddick .(CNN) -- The founder of The Body Shop, which grew from one shop in southern England to an international chain, has died, the chairman of Body Shop International confirmed Monday.Anita Roddick, 64, died after suffering a major brain hemorrhage, her family said in a statement to the UK Press Association. Cheaper Alternative to Health Insurance
2007-09-09 04:55:00
When I first arrived in this country, I did not have any health insurance at all. Good thing I did not need to see the doctor for any major illness, except for some skin infection that I paid out of pocket when I had to see a doctor. However, I did have to see the doctor for all the medical checkups and tests like the TB test when I applied for my permanent residency. Of course I had to pay for everything out of my own pocket. And there was that incident one winter when the crown on one of my teeth fell off! I had no insurance whatsoever. Fortunately all that was needed was to "glue" the crown back and that did not cost all that much. Many people go without health insurance because they just can't afford it. But nowadays there are some cheaper alternatives to health insurance. If you can spare $19.95 a month, you can get a dental package with Ameriplan that includes Vision, Prescription and Chiropractic discount benefits. What's more, it covers the entire family that lives u...

Blueberries May Lower Blood Fat/Cholesterol
2007-09-06 18:44:00
I did not know that blueberries contain a powerful cholesterol- and fat-fighting compound. This is simply wonderful news! I have been looking around for some natural solutions for treating high cholesterol. My bad cholesterol level is a bit on the high side. The fact that I don't exercise is not helping my condition!I am already taking hydrochlorothiazide to treat my blood pressure and I sure do not want to take more drugs to treat my blood sugar level or my cholesterol level in the future! If there are natural solutions that work, all the better. Lipitor, a cholesterol lowering drug made by Pfizer have some adverse side effects. An article I came across said that a cup of blueberries a day is more effective than any statin drug in lowering LDL cholesterol. The other exciting news about blueberries is that Pterostilbene - the fat-fighting compound in blueberries - has been found to have cancer-fighting and diabetes-fighting properties. Diabetes is one disease I am concerned a...

Men go for looks
2007-09-05 00:29:00
How often do you see a good looking man with a below average looking woman? Not often, right? Usually a good looking man is often seen with a beautiful woman. How about an average looking man with a beautiful woman? Quite often, right?Someone said on the radio today, when you see a beautiful woman with an average looking man, or below average looking man, check the size of his bank balance! Heheh, seems this is very true in Malaysia! But studies show men usually go for looks whereas women are more discriminating and go beyond looks when looking for a mate.Researchers led by Todd report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that their study found humans were similar to most other mammals, "following Darwin's principle of choosy females and competitive males, even if humans say something different."Their study involved 26 men and 20 women in Munich, Germany.Participants ranged in age from 26 to their early 40s and took part in "speed dating," sh...

Vaginal rejuvenation
2007-08-31 23:01:00
I don't remember where I first read about this procedure. I was amused and then the question I started asking myself upon reading the popularity of the procedure among some women was, why bother? When I googled "vaginal rejuvenation" I can't believe the number of places offering the services!ReutersUpdated: 12:01 p.m. PT Aug 31, 2007Cosmetic procedures billed as ”vaginal rejuvenation,” “designer vaginoplasty” or even “revirgination” are not medically necessary and are not guaranteed to be safe, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists cautioned on Friday. The group, which educates and accredits doctors who treat women and deliver babies, said it is deceptive to give the impression that any of these procedures are accepted or routine. In guidance published in the September issue of its journal, Obstetrics & Gynecology, the group, known as ACOG, said the procedures can cause complications such as infection, altered sensation, pain and scarring. The pro...

Garlic good for fighting cancer cells
2007-08-31 07:51:00
Garlic has become a popular food supplement for the support of a healthy cardiovascular system. Garlic contains the chemicals alliin and allinase, and when combined produce allicin — the active ingredient in garlic which most scientists believe is responsible for providing this important support for cardiovascular health. The following story about what garlic can do sounds very promising. A friend of mine died of brain cancer while in his early thirties.CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Garlic can kill cells that cause glioblastoma, a brain cancer that is usually fatal, researchers in South Carolina have found.Swapan Ray and Narendra Banik, neurosciences professors at the Medical University of South Carolina, said their discovery came during a search for a way to kill the cancer without harming healthy cells, The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier reported."In the disease, you want to kill the cells, but you want to protect others," Banik told the newspaper. "Our tests were to...

Asians and belly fat
2007-08-29 23:09:00
I do not have a weight problem, but I do have a belly fat problem. Even when I was a skinny teenager I had a fat tummy in comparison to the rest of my body. Now that I am older, I do not know if there is something I can do about reducing the belly fat. What bothers me is that the fat could be the inner abdominal fat, or visceral fat that is associated with heart disease and diabetes.A Canadian study found that the Chinese and South Asian participants tended to have a greater proportion of visceral fat. That means Asians are more likely to develop weight-related illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. :-(By Terri ColesTORONTO (Reuters) - The danger in putting on weight isn't just a matter of how much, but also where the fat goes -- and it seems some ethnic and racial groups have a tendency to gain fat where it does the most damage.Compared with people of European ancestry, those of Chinese and South Asian ancestry tend to have relatively more inner abdomin...

Complaining can make you feel worse
2007-08-28 22:07:00
How often do you justify your complaining as "something you needed to get off your chest"? How often have you actually felt that the incessant griping actually made you feel worse instead of better?I know that feeling very well! I even get sleepless nights because I would replay whatever caused me the angst in my mind. Voicing your frustrations is a natural way of dealing with them — but watch out for when a conversation dissolves into a bitch session. Talking your problems to death can make you feel even worse.A recent study found that teenage girls who vented to each other about their problems, from boy trouble to social slights, were more likely to develop depression and anxiety — and the same is likely true for adult women, says Amanda Rose, the author of the study.“There’s a definite belief in our culture that talking about our problems makes you feel better,” says Rose, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Missouri, Columbia, whose research was...

Bitter Melon for diabetic treatment
2007-08-28 04:25:00
My father has been on oral diabetic treatment for many years and it has adversely affected his kidney function. He is now on insulin treatment.I suffered from gestational diabetes and since I have a family history of diabetes, I am afraid that I am a likely candidate for diabetes.I am interested in natural solutions for diabetes. I have known for quite some time now about the benefits of Gymnema Sylvestre in lowering blood sugar levels. I have a bottle of it which I got from my online food supplement store. But the thing with this tablet is that I am supposed to take it about half an hour before a meal. And I keep forgetting to do it!I have recently discovered that bitter melon (peria, in Malay) also have some benefit in lowering blood sugar levels. There has been in fact a study on the effects of bitter melon (Momordica charantia) on serum and liver triglyceride levels in rats.Today I was at my favorite Asian supermarket, and bought myself some fresh bitter melons. Skin Whitening Products
2007-08-27 00:15:00
Skin whitening or lightening cosmetic products are popular among Asians. A lighter complexion is the ideal for those born with a naturally darker complexion. In some cultures, a dark complexion means that you are of the lower class, somebody who has to work out in the sun, whereas a lighter complexion means that you are pampered and stays indoors. But whatever our ethnic background eventually there comes a time in our life where we will struggle with some kind of skin pigmentation problem. Personally I've noticed some dark patches on my face. I have begun to use sunscreen on my face during the day, in hopes of limiting the progress of the skin discoloration. So far I have noticed that it is not getting worse. The beauty products that I am currently using, Beauticontrol, have made a dramatic improvement on the quality and appearance of my complexion. I have not tried any product from their Whitening line, though. There have been reports about the safety concerns of skin lightening...

Addicted to my lip balm

I confess I am addicted to my lip balm! I hate the feeling of tightness and dryness on my lips. After I have washed my mouth, I will immediately look for my lip balm. :-oFRIDAY, Aug. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Some people use lip balm so often that it's almost like an addiction."For many people, it is quite difficult for them to stop using lip balm because they've become so used to their lips having more moisture content than they had in the past," Dr. Lisa Garner, a dermatologist at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas, said in a prepared statement. This lip balm "addiction" isn't a problem as long as you don't develop an allergy to any of the ingredients."On occasion, you may develop an irritation or sensitivity to one of the ingredients that may make your lips feel dry, because you're actually having a reaction to the lip balm," Garner said.Flavoring, fragrances or added preservatives may be the source of the problem if you do have problems with a lip balm. Plan B - Morning After Pill
2007-08-24 23:09:00
Many people have known for a long time that after unprotected sex, one can take a large dose of the contraceptive pill and it can prevent pregnancy. Plan B is just the "large number of pills" put together in one tablet.I do not oppose the use of contraceptive pills, so to me this is just another version of the pill for pregnancy prevention. What I am against is abortion after pregnancy has been ascertained. The only danger of the easy access of this pill is that it might promote more promiscuity among the young who refused to use the condom and prefer to take the Plan B pill. We still don't know the long term effects of frequent use of this pregnancy prevention pill.WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Sales of the Plan B "morning-after pill" nearly doubled in the past year, exceeding expectations after the U.S. government allowed adults to buy the emergency contraceptive without a prescription.A three-year battle ended last August when the Food and Drug Administration decided that women ...

Dangerous Dieting
2007-08-23 19:08:00
I wrote about a 3-day diet in another blog. The 3-day diet may seem to work for a time, but in reality the weight loss is mostly due to the liquid loss from the body. Moreover the food that the dieter must eat gets monotonous and boring for a time. I think that kind of diet would qualify as a dangerous diet. (HealthDay News) -- The right way to diet and lose weight is slowly, over time, and while eating a balanced diet with plenty of healthy foods, the American Heart Association says.Diets that encourage eating only one type of food or encourage rapid weight loss can be dangerous to your health. The association offers this list of the possible risks posed by fad diets: Nutritional deficiencies caused by a lack of a balanced diet.Lack of physical activity from emphasis on diet only can increase the risk of heart disease.Lack of variety in foods can cause boredom and frustration, and make it difficult to maintain the diet for more than a brief period.Severe restrictions on the f...

Washing After Sex May Raise H.I.V. Risk
2007-08-22 23:56:00
A study in Uganda has come up with a surprising finding about sex and H.I.V. Washing the penis minutes after sex increased the risk of acquiring H.I.V. in uncircumcised men. The sooner the washing, the greater the risk of becoming infected, the study found. Delaying washing for at least 10 minutes after sex significantly lowered the risk of H.I.V. infection, Dr. Fredrick E. Makumbi reported on July 25 at an International AIDS Society Conference in Sydney, Australia. The researchers do not have a precise explanation for the findings, which challenge common wisdom and the teaching of many infectious disease experts who urge penile cleansing as part of good genital hygiene. Health experts have suggested that washing the penis after sex could prevent potentially infectious vaginal secretions from entering the body through the uncircumcised penis.Huh? How so, and why? HIV/AIDS and Human Trafficking
2007-08-22 20:05:00
About 300,000 women and children are trafficked across Asia each year, accelerating the spread of HIV/AIDS, the United Nations said on Wednesday. "Trafficking ... contributes to the spread of HIV by significantly increasing the vulnerability of trafficked persons to infection," said Caitlin Wiesen-Antin, HIV/AIDS regional coordinator, Asia and Pacific, for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). "Both human trafficking and HIV greatly threaten human development and security." Major human trafficking routes run between Nepal and India and between Thailand and neighbors like Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Many of the victims are young teenage girls who end up in prostitution. "The link between human trafficking and HIV/AIDS has only been identified fairly recently," Wiesen-Antin told the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific. "Neither HIV/AIDS nor human trafficking have been integrated or mainstreamed adequately, either at policy or programmatic level." Source: ...

Women and Health Info
2007-08-22 04:31:00
TUESDAY, Aug. 21 (Heal th Day News) -- Women are more likely than men to search for health information on the Internet, according to researchers who analyzed four years of U.S. national survey data. A team at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., also found that:women are more likely than men to seek online support groups for medical problems;women are more likely than men to seek health care information for others;women visit more health sites than men;men are more likely than women to go online for sensitive health information that may be difficult to talk about. According to the researchers, health care is one of the few areas where women use the Internet much more than men. The other two areas are religion and driving directions.Read more here. How true that is! I don't know how many times I have used the internet to try to understand my health issues. I am quite the hypochondriac so a little knowledge can be quite dangerous sometimes! One of my closest friends have become the "d...
