Breast Augmentation Popular With Older Women
2008-01-14 10:54:00 More and more mommies are going under the knife to regain the shape the shape they once had. Last year, breast augmentation was the most popular cosmetic surgery in the US and nearly a third of all patients were aged 40 or above, a 17% increase from the previous year. The recent rise can largely be attributed to the heavy marketing of so-called “mommy makeovers”: a breast lift or augmentation, or a tummy tuck—or a combination of the three. Another factor contributing to the rising numbers is the increase in bariatric surgeries. After this procedure many women also undergo breast augmentation to compensate for the weight lost in the breasts, the number of annual weight-loss surgeries in the United States has nearly doubled since 2003, and typical patients are in their late 30’s. Many women now tell a story of rejuvenation, similar to Dena Scott. Unhappy with her shape after bearing two children, she decided to have breast augmentation surgery. “The aging and chi... Family Will Sue After Teen Dies Due To Refused Transplant
2008-01-14 07:31:00 Nataline Sarkisyan died Thursday night at about 6 p.m. at University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center; just hours after her health insurance company reversed its decision not to pay for a liver transplant that doctors said the girl needed. Nataline had been battling leukemia and received a bone marrow transplant from her brother. Shortly after the transplant she developed complications that caused her liver to fail. She had been in a vegetative state for weeks, said her mother, Hilda. Doctors at UCLA determined that a transplant was necessary and sent a letter to CIGNA Health care on the 11th of December. The Philadelphia-based insurer refused to pay for the procedure, saying it was too experimental The decision sparked off a protest outside CIGNA’s office in Glendale. Over 150 teenagers and nurses rallied to get the company to reverse its decision. Watch The News Video The public pressure worked and the company finally reversed its decision. (more…) Blog, H... Girl Disemboweled After Swimming Pool Mishap
2008-01-12 06:35:00 A six-year-old Minnesota girl who was horrifically disemboweled after sitting on an open drain in a swimming pool has received three new organs, KETV.com reported Wednesday. Abigail Taylor received a new small bowel, liver and pancreas in the rare triple-organ transplant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Taylor was hospitalized last summer when the powerful suction pump tore out part of her intestinal tract at the Minneapolis Golf Club. At the time of the incident, the girl’s family said it was a “medical miracle” that Taylor was still alive. UNMC Chief of Transplantation Dr. Alan Langas told KETV.com that Taylor was one of the oldest patients he has seen. “Most of our patients are certainly less than 2 years of age and often less than 1 year of age,” Dr. Langas said. The girl is still in a serious but stable condition. Blog, Implant, News, Surgery Share This More About: Swimming , Girl , Pool
Skin Treatment Turns Man into Blue Smurf
2008-01-10 23:16:00 Paul Karason really can understand the expression “feeling blue.” For more than a decade, the 57-year-old has been living with a blue face. It was almost fourteen years ago when Karason developed a bad case of dermatitis. To treat his reddened itchy skin he began self-medicating, using a treatment called colloidal silver, which is made by extracting silver from metal.Touted by manufacturers as a cure-all for skin problems, colloidal silver usually is found in a liquid form. Looking for relief, Karason drank the concoction and rubbed it on his skin — something the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not recommend. His skin slowly began turning blue. The change was so gradual that I didn’t perceive it and other people around me likewise,” said Karason. “It wasn’t until a friend I hadn’t seen in several months came by my parent’s place to see me and he asked me ‘what did you do?.’” The FDA does not consider colloidal s... Meals Served In Test Tubes - Clinic Restaurant Singapore
2008-01-08 07:14:00 Did you ever enjoy the food during your hospital stay so much that you so longingly wish for just one more meal served by people in? If your hospital food was anything like mine then I can’t imagine the answer is yes, however a new restaurant in Singapore has taken this concept (of medical attire and design, not hospital food) in hope to create a rather original gimmick and certainly one-of-a-kind chow house. The Clinic, as it is so aptly named, is the mad scientist rendition of a fetish restaurant. Created as a tribute to pop artist Damien Hirst, it features staff dressed as doctors and nurses serving colorful pills, syringes and even IV drips of cocktails like “Nitro-Sangria” and “Sex on a Drip” to customers. The theme is carried through out the restaurant with pill shaped rooms, surgical pan shaped plates, wheel-chairs for seats and Damien’s own artwork which is also medically inspired. Legal Performance Enhancing Drugs
2008-01-07 05:59:00 According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, everyone from classical musicians to physicists are gobbling down legal “attention enhancers” and “fear blockers”. If people who are paid to think for a living are showing improved performance whilst under the influence of legal prescription drugs, do they really work? And, are they safe? Many of you will have heard of Provigil, also known as ‘Professor’s Little Helper’, this particular drug ‘is a prescription medicine used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness’ and is favored by scientists, military pilots and soldiers for enhanced performance. Provigil enhances short-term memory and lets users stay awake for extended periods. Professional poker players prefer the ADHD drug ‘Adderall’ for sharpening attention, another ADHD drug Ritalin, is the second drug of choice among this group and is also popular with college students.Adderall and Ritalin both affect the che...
