Desperate Housewives VS. Filipino Doctors
2007-10-04 11:50:00 Desperate Housewives VS. Filipino Doctors Now I was actually just putting my nursing nameplate on my uniform as I saw the news this morning...kinda got me fired up inside, it surely hits the Filipino pride, if you know what I mean. However, I think the issue is somewhat resolving. Read below for my compiled summary and please leave a comment, thank you ! :D - Pinoy Syringe The issue : A racially-discriminatory comment made in an episode of Desperate Housewives on 9/30/07 against Filipino doctors. The Petition for an Apology (a repost from miss kurdapya) : To the producers of "Desperate Housewives" and ABC: We are writing to express concern and hurt about a racially-discriminatory comment made in an episode of Desperate Housewives on 9/30/07. In a scene in which Susan was told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause, she replied, "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."As members and ... TOP 5 ENVIRONMENTAL TIPS for WOMEN
2007-10-02 12:58:00 TOP 5 ENVIRONMENTAL BEAUTY TIPS for WOMEN(*this is an excerpt from Treehugger's Top10 article, visit their site for the complete list*)(photo from thetragictruth-of-me)1. Chemical chaos—lok at the labelThe biggest and most complicated issue regarding the cosmetics we use are the unregulated chemicals that are used to make them. From the consumer’s point of view there are certain common substances to look out for (more on that below in the Get Techie section). The best advice is to learn the main ones to avoid and then check the product ingredient label. Or rather than scouring every label, you can also choose a cosmetics company that has signed the CSC’s compact and uses certified organic and natural ingredients.2. No sweat—aluminum-free deodorantAluminum, which is commonly used in antiperspirants, has been found to not only cause skin irritation, but the inflammation caused may spread beyond the areas where the antiperspirant is being applied, leading to more general infla... Nurses going abroad: We train, they gain
2007-10-02 05:10:00 Nurses going abroad: We train, they gainBy Francis CuetoFirst of two parts A fortnight from today, 35-year-old Esperanza Reyes Alvaran will be boarding a flight that will take her to San Francisco. From there, it will be a short bus ride to Daly City, where a nurse’s job awaits her. And although the mother of two has had to step down a couple of rungs in the career ladder (she was a teacher at a Quezon City nursing school until last June), the compensation package her new job offers is more than enough to justify her not-too-painless decision. She will be earning five times her present income. Mrs. Alvaran says she has only one overriding motivation behind her part in the current Philippine diaspora: Her family.“Who would want to be separated from their children and husband?” she asks. “They are your family.” Her eldest child is 10.“But I simply can’t let this opportunity pass us by.”Before her teaching job, Mrs. Alvaran worked as a nurse at a hospital in Mandaluyo... 2007-10-02 04:04:00 Filipina nurse wins top U-S awardA Filipino-American has been named one of the Best Nurse Leaders of the United States by winning the 2006 ADVANCE for Nurses Journal's Best Nurse Leader award. Los Angeles-based senior nurse Lily Maniquiz is the nurse manager of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System's Nursing Home Care Unit 213-2.Vital to Lara's winning was the successful implementation of a program that she created for the reduction of patient fall incidents. This program has been adopted as model for other fall prevention programs. "I was challenged by my senior leadership team to address the increasing patient fall incidents in our unit. What I did was, together with my multi-disciplinary staff, implement specific changes that became a four-pronged approach to reduce patient falls," Lara said. The approach included hourly safety checks, assessment, communication with and assistance to patients. Lara's program was initially met with resistance by nursing assistants who f... Allyn, BS, RN, PHNAuthor InformationInformation from IndustryCulturally knowledgeable and compassionate care supports and preserves valued traditions that give meaning to people's lives. Acknowledgment and maintenance of the client's cultural traditions show respect for the person. Even though recent evidence-based trials have concluded that there is no empirical benefit to intercessory prayer, an intrinsic benefit remains in supporting the client's desire to engage in this practice. The Relevance of PrayerGiven the multiplicity of ethnic populations that now present in our practices, the use of prayer as an intervention has particular relevance. Respect for practitioners of diverse religions is essential to promote the clients' health and well-being, support them through illness, and affirm their autonomy.Although systematic reviews on intercessory prayer (IP) have found that it is ineffecti...

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING: PROS & CONS
2007-09-22 14:32:00 I could say that my 1 month community exposure was not too traumatic as others have experienced.I agree that 1 month of community immersion is queite taxing physically and emotionally for beginning students. For those who have not experienced being immersed and living in the community, take these pros and cons for a general idea. PROS:Learn and practise skills on being a CHNurse. Enhance and develop your social and communication skills as you interact with the different personalities in the community. Learn of the different lifestyles, cultures, and beliefs practised by the particular community. Learn to live in a rural setting. Build stronger bonds with your clinical group. Being immersed in the community for 1 month with your groupmates should be proper time to strengthen your friendship. CONS:Physically taxing. The community immersion required students to do home visits almost everyday rain or shine (minimum of 20 homes per day). Emotionally taxing. Some community members may not ... STAGES OF LABOR AND DELIVERY
2007-09-22 10:51:00 STAGES OF LABOR AND DELIVERYMy clinical group is currently assigned at the Deli very room of a community health center this last few weeks of September. I thought it would be a good recap for me to post topics related to Labor and delivery.DILATION OF CERVIX (1st STAGE)The first stage involves the 3 phases of labour - early, (hourly monitoring for nurses)active and (30 minutes monitoring for nurses)transitional phases which end with the dilation of the cervix. (15 minutes monitoring for nurses)This stage can spread over a period of days or weeks, without noticeable labour or can cover a period of 2-24 hours of obvious contractions, which usually last about 30-45 seconds. They are usually mild or slightly strong and could be fairly irregular, ranging anywhere between 5-20 minutes apart.Patients may experience menstrual like cramps, backache, indigestion, diarrhoea or maybe a slightly bloody discharge. A warm sensation in the abdomen is also indicative of this early stage. Even though i... More About: Liver , Delivery , Ages
10 HEALTH TIPS TO BLOGGERS!
2007-09-22 09:27:00 Some health tips from your student nurse:1. Hydrate!Keep a water bottle nearby or C2.Water is essential in any activity you do and this will prevent build up of toxins while you sit in front of the computer for hours. Avoid too much coffee to prevent insomnia.2. Stretch! This will promote circulation throughout the body.On average, the human body can tolerate one position for 20 minutes before it needs to adjust.3. Exercise! If you feel sluggish, get down on the floor and do some push-ups (5 - 10).Or do jumping jacks, whichever you prefer to get your heart pumping.4. Take a break!Leave the computer every two hours or so.This will stimulate muscles that you don't use while at the computer and will also give you fresh air and sunlight to revive your mind and body.5. Sleep!Get 6 - 8 hours of sleep. After long hours of being in front of the computer, your eyes will have been quite strained and your entire body will need just as much rest.Sleep helps rejuvenate and will do wonders.6. Thin... EXODUS OF PINOY NURSES
2007-09-19 13:07:00 We see our government utilizing (or squandering?) more and more revenues lately this past few weeks. From a recent blog at Pinoy RN, we see an astounding estimate of 10 billion Pesos being used under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA)...hold on...and was that annually??And then we also hear of contracts (ZTE wasn't it?) amounting to an estimate of $330 million being accepted by our government, that only a few in the high ranks ( not even 0.000001% of our population??) would benefit from. Then we have our situation here of our beloved Health System slowly crumbling away.It is the cliched Philippine "brain-drain" or "Exodus " of our health professionals. These include our handsome and lovely doctors, us cute, pretty and charming nurses, our appealing and irresistable physical therapists and pharmacists and so on and so on (forgive me for the sudden change of tone and the compliments just could not be left out..hehehe)From a quick glance at it, it would be obvio... Sean Kingston: Beautiful Girls - Music Review
2007-09-14 08:21:00 Sean Kingston "Beautiful Girls "This would be the first time i encountered a song by Sean Kingston.I'm not sure if I had been an audiotypical ignorant (neologism? hehe) or he just wasn't well known internationally. I enjoyed his rNb song Beautiful Girls, it's got a moderately slow beat not like other fast-track-tie-up-your-tongue rap songs.About Sean Kingston, well he seems ok, but it stuck on my mind when my fil-am friend said our sadistic P.E lady professor kinda looked liked Sean Kingston. That had me laughing like crazy. Our professor was short and dark and stout and I didn't much like her. Anyways, go listen and enjoy the song @ my imeem playlist. Feed! More About: Music , Review , Sean Kingston
