Ask me anything!
2008-05-08 15:51:00
I’ve been tagged by WVSooner to disclose 7 things about myself. But I’ve done that so often that I can’t think of seven more things to bore entertain you with. So, I decided to put the ball in your court. Ask me anything about myself or my life and I will answer in a post. How does that sound? In the meantime, I’m working on some exciting new features. I was hoping to be ready today, but alas no. And I may not be ready tomorrow either… but I know you can wait! If you’ve taken part in the postcard swap, and you’re posting it on your blog (which would really be nice!), remember to click on Mr Linky in the sidebar when your postcard arrives.  I’ll be fetching post tomorrow, so hopefully there’s something for me.  Of course I swapped with more than one person, because I wanted everyone to get a foreign postcard and there were so many Americans.  Some might call that being greedy, but I prefer thoughtful! Don’t forget to...
It’s important to swim your own race and not someone else’s
2008-05-07 11:38:00
Swim mer Natalie du Toit is one of South Africa’s top athletes.  She first competed internationally at the age of 14, when she took part in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.  In February 2001 she was struck by a car while driving home from swimming practice on her scooter.  She lost her left leg. Three months later she was back in the pool, before she could even walk.  She swims without the aid of a prosthetic limb. During the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Natalie, who was then 18 years old, won both the multi-disability 50 m freestyle and the multi-disability 100 m freestyle in world record time. She also made sporting history by qualifying for the 800 m able-bodied freestyle final - the first time that an athlete with a disability had qualified for the final of an able-bodied event.  At the closing of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, she was presented with the first David Dixon Award* for Outstanding Athlete of the Games. In 2003, competing agai...

Five False Assumptions About Natural Living
2008-05-06 15:28:00
by Frederic Patenaude It seems like every time you turn your head, you hear confusing and misleading information from every corner of the natural health movement. First, you have mainstream “experts” who rely on outdated and inaccurate data to advise us on the subject. And then there’s the raw food or natural health movement itself, within which most people seem to disagree on what constitutes the healthiest diet. From the mainstream, we hear the following… “You have to make sure you eat enough protein” Without a doubt, the issue of “getting enough protein” is the number one concern of anyone switching to any kind of diet for any reason. Even though decades of vegetarian and vegan traditions and extensive research have proven that our actual protein requirements are fairly low and easy to meet - as long as we eat enough food - most people who will advise you about diet will likely make a much bigger deal about protein than it actually is. Bodybuilders go ...

What’s up!
2008-05-05 13:43:00
Craig normally gets up before I do and feeds the cats. On days when he sleeps in a little, they literally wait for him to wake up! I went to visit my friend Charlotte on Friday and came home with three large bags full of clothes! Most of them don’t fit yet, but by next summer I will have some gorgeous boutique clothes to wear! She’s lost about 30 kg (66 pounds) since November and is looking fabulous! She’s got a another 12 kg (26 pounds) to go to goal. I am so proud of her. My pedometer has died. Probably not from exertion. Nevertheless, it’s snuffed it and taken my week’s total - pitiful though it may be -with it. I’ll see about getting another one… have to wheedle the money out of Craig! Despite my emphatic declarations last week, I haven’t really got off my ass yet. Oh, I’m eating well for the most*, and the scale is creeping down, but I need to get moving. After tomorrow morning’s visa interview I’m...
Sunday funny
2008-05-04 11:24:00
The most popular form of transport in Southern Africa is mini bus taxis.  They are a menace on the roads, poorly maintained and always filled to the max.  Here’s a little prank local funnyman Leon Schuster played…

Marinated Mushrooms
2008-05-03 12:49:00
I love mushrooms!  This is my third mushroom recipe in a row, although I haven’t eaten the other two in a long, long time.  But I’m definitely going to eat this tonight!     Marinated Mushrooms   1 punnet mushrooms, sliced ½ cup olive oil 1-2 tsp mustard ½  cup chopped parsley 1 tsp seasoning salt juice of 1 lemon   Blend all the ingredients by hand and place the mushrooms in the marinade for at least 30 minutes.  Try different kinds of mushrooms for different flavors.  Serve on sliced avocado or plain lettuce leaves.
Lost and Found
2008-05-02 21:38:00
A lot of us are working at weight loss… But is that all we want to lose? I’ve been thinking about this ever since I posted those teenage pictures a few days ago. When I look at my younger self, I not only see a thinner me, but also a more hopeful, more innocent, more care-free me. And while I know that I can’t undo the last 13 years, and I don’t necessarily want to, I think a part of me wants to regain some of that innocence, hope and exuberance. My extra weight is weighing me down in more ways than one. Don’t get me wrong… I love where I am in my life. I’m always moving forward. I’m with the man I want to share the rest of my life with. We are making big and exciting plans. I’m learning new skills and discovering new aspects of myself all the time. I’m very happy. But. I know that I am not treating myself as well as I should. I have this long history of failing myself. Let’s face it, when you gain a lot of weight ...

I will act now
2008-05-02 10:56:00
I came across this quote earlier in the week and it just really spoke to me. It ties in beautifully with something Briy wrote. She felt that she had let herself down in April and vowed to do better in May. But she didn’t delay until 1 May. She renamed the remaining days of April as Pre-May days, i.e. May -1, May -2, etc. And she started doing better immediately. There is a great lesson in that! I will act now. I will act now. I will act now. Henceforth, I will repeat these words each hour, each day, everyday, until the words become as much a habit as my breathing, and the action which follows becomes as instinctive as the blinking of my eyelids. With these words I can condition my mind to perform every action necessary for my success. I will act now. I will repeat these words again and again and again. I will walk where failures fear to walk. I will work when failures seek rest. I will act now for now is all I have. Tomorrow is the day reserved for the labor of the lazy. I am ...

I stand corrected
2008-03-07 23:23:00
I wrote about “blog anonimity” in this post earlier today. As I said at the time, the whole thing puzzled me. What I should have done was throw the question out there and waited for the answers. Instead I managed to sound very judgemental and self-righteous. I’m sorry! I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone. You ...

You Can Change Your Life
2008-03-07 10:24:00
I have to admit that I often find myself mystified by the “closet weight losers”. The ones who blog under aliases, never show their faces on their blogs and won’t even disclose their continent of residence, never mind state or town. The oneswho have a “normal” blog and a separate “weight loss” blog. I have one ...

There is no cure for stupidity
2008-03-05 09:26:00

Gall Stone and Liver Cleanse

Detoxifying The Liver
2008-03-03 07:48:00
You might think that if the liver can cleanse the bloodstream, it should be able to cleanse itself and is in no need of extra help, right? Wrong! The liver, the supreme organ for cleansing the body, itself needs cleansing. The liver is like the air and oil filters of an engine which need regular cleansing ...

Does this blog make me look fat?
2008-03-02 23:20:00
I need your advice. Please! I started blogging in July of last year, with Blog ger. Beinga nitpicking, anal Virgo, everything had to be perfect from Day 1, which of course it wasn’t! So I fired off some missives to the “Help” function, to which no replies were forthcoming. In a fit of pique, I decided to ...
