Cable Fly
2007-06-24 23:22:00
A relatively new exercise for me. In the past I've either used dumbbells for flys or cables for cross overs but I find this move great for isolating the chest. ( I find my triceps can be too heavily involved in my pressing stuff).Key points -1 / Start light and stay light - This exercise has you starting off in a stretched out position. Not a good exercise for testing your one rep max !2 / Pulling the bench forward puts more stress on the chest and eliminates help from the anterior deltoids. Try to find a position that feels both effective and comfortable for you.3 / Beginners don't really need to bother with this and instead should stick to getting good at the basics and incorporate the likes of the cable fly when they have a bit more gym experience. Ideal for the more advanced trainer who may wish to pre exhaust the chest before a compound move such as the bench press.4 / If wearing shorts remember to wear pretty tight boxers underneath. In the past I have accidentally caught a ...

Smith Machine Squat !
2007-06-22 14:50:00
Squatting with the Smith Machine is never a great idea. If you have access to a free bar then use a free bar. I've seen similar things happen in my gym, although as yet, it's never been as bad as this guys missed attempt.Techniques such as 'one rep maxes', 'negatives' and 'partial reps' are all pretty good for testing and improving strength but best avoided if you are an idiot.

As pretty much everyone knows, I've been trying to get picked for the Men's Health Cover Model competition for a few years now.Well, I got the phone call this morning. :-)I think they have around 12 - 15 finalists who all tie up in London at the end of June / start of July, where basically the guy who best represents the mag and has the look they want will win the competition. (Although for me just getting picked to go is the dogs balls ! )I'll keep everyone posted on how it goes which wont be long as we are already flying through June as it is !Men's Health Magazine - UK

New Phone !
2007-06-10 01:06:00
Phone DealsI ordered a new phone online (check link) so I should have it pretty soon. My current phone has a 2 mega pixel camera whereas this new one has a 3.2 mega pixel camera. I had planned on the new Nokia N95 but from what I have read it can crash quite a bit. Hopefully my new phone will take decent quality videos and pictures so my blog can go on to rival Youtube and maybe Google will offer to buy me out :-)

IRON AGE
2007-06-08 21:46:00
Ironage compares bodybuilders from say Arnie's era against the more recent bodybuilders such as Ronnie Coleman - (both pictured above hitting double bicep). You can see how much bodybuilding has progressed when all the greats are put up side by side in this virtual posedown. Just look at Ronnie's bloated belly next to Arnie's tiny waist but then Ronnie's legs make Arnie's look like those of a bed ridden vegetarian !For me the earlier guys win it hands down - modern day mass loses out to old school aesthetics.IRON AGE

Neil's wheels
2007-06-07 19:44:00
I was taking a bit of abuse because I only have upper body pics on the blog so I took a few quick leg snaps. I have recently changed my leg routine again - I flick between two leg days - one is heavy day with the biggies such as front squats and dead lifts whereas the second day focuses on a higher rep range and I throw in some unilateral stuff and super sets. I love one rep max / power lifting rep ranges but I find all body parts respond well to higher frequency and various rep ranges.

Dropped from 14' 10 to 12 ' 1
2007-06-02 23:46:00
Big thanks to Joanne for taking some new pictures for me - If anyone in Ireland / Belfast needs pics done let me know and I will put you in touch - She can do all sorts - weddings , kids , guys in jeans tensing up etc etc !I dropped about 2 stone and 9 pounds for the pictures although after these were taken I had a chicken fried rice, banana fritters, chips , curry sauce and full fat coke !Plan to stay lean for a bit then maybe bulk up if I dont make the competition finals. Good thing about dropping a bit of weight is how easy your body packs muscle on afterwards without much fat going on.Cardio..... I dont do any. Weights and diet are better methods for cutting up.Sit ups..... For abs I squat , deadlift etc - about 6 weeks ago I started doing some leg raises. Cor stability, sit ups etc - not my thing.Gym..... 4 - 6 times per week. Legs, Back and Bi's , Chest and Shoulders - I changed routine frequently - tried to stay heavy - none of that 'high reps t...

Changes - one week !
2007-05-31 19:26:00
A while ago, in a previous blog entry, I mentioned body fat testing machines and how their results can be a bit off depending on water levels , time of day etc.( this link )http://wwwneilmctcom.blogspot.com/2007_0 3_01_archive.html#1538653296349843407As I was taking some pics today my older brother suggested recording my total body water on the body fat scales. On Friday last week I took first measurement and finished up today ( although I may update this post in future just to show changes over a longer time). Bearing In mind the scales had me at 14 % body fat in Feb when I began dieting down from a weight of about 14 ' 10.I tried to keep all variables the same ie - same time of day, same hairstyle, take test before workout etc.Fri -Weight - 12 ' 12 . 2Bodyfat % - 12 . 7Fat Mass - 1st 8 . 8Fat Free Mass -11st 3 . 4Total Body Water - 8st 3 . 2Sat -Weight - 12 ' 11 . 4 Bodyfat % - 12 . 7 Fat Mass - 1st 8 . 8 Fat Free Mass - 11st 2 . 6 Total Body Water - 8st 2 . 6Sun - Weight - 12 ...

Push Press
2007-05-24 22:06:00
I love training shoulders - In fact most of my favourite exercises are either pushing or explosive / powerlifting type moves. When pushing overhead you work the shoulders and triceps but I find with this exercise it just zaps everything. Your abs and back are trying to help you balance while your forearms and lungs are screaming for the set to end !As seen in the picture, this exercise is basically a military press but the extra bit of push and absorption from the legs helps you handle more weight. A great exercise which should be alternated with the strict military version (no leg help).Tip - Take the bar out from the squat rack when working with a weight that is simply too heavy to flick up into the start position.

Quick Update
2007-05-24 21:47:00
So I started dieting around Feb time. Nothing major to start off, just cut out the junk food then gradually tightened everything up. I plan to get some photos taken on the 31st of this month so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference.Starting weight was about 14 ' 7 - 14 ' 10Currently about 12 ' 12 - 13 ' 02This year I really took my time with my diet and unlike last year I didn't drop as much muscle or strength. After training legs for an hour the other day I was still able to try 140kg squats to the deck, my bench after shoulders was around 120kg and in general I don't feel too bad. My brother suggested using the body fat machine to show the difference in my fluid levels between now and next week as I've just started playing about with different variables such as water and carbs.I'll keep you guys updated on my results.

Fasted cardio
2007-05-15 00:10:00
Like I've said 100 times before, people always look at the details long before they cover the basics. Top coach Alwyn Cosgrove is one of the few guys out there who I have any respect for. I love his shy, 'kid gloves' approach :-)Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously, are you fucking kidding me? Why are we even talking about this? Let's take two twins, both 200lbs, both doing the same training program, taking the same supplements, and following the same nutrition plan in the hopes of getting lean. One difference, though: one of them eats 2 eggs and does 30 minutes of cardio three days per week. The other does 30 minutes of cardio, three days per week and THEN eats 2 eggs. So what's the magical difference in terms of fat loss after six months? Drum roll please... I'll tell you ? no fucking difference. However, whenever you bring up this question we get a ton of responses saying, "This is exactly the information I needed!". Oh fuck off. The reason you are still fat is because yo...

Obsessed ?
2007-05-10 23:46:00
Full credit to Nick Nilsson for these great pointers !First one is my personal favourite.1. If, on a job application, under "Previous Employment," you've listed weight training and under "Hobbies" you've listed your actual previous employment.2. If you've ever made yourself so sore that it either takes you a full minute to sit on the toilet or you have to fall down onto it.3. If you've been banned from an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant.4. If you've ever broken a bone and tried to "train around it."5. If you're buying a home and the first thing you look for is where your training equipment will go (not how big the kitchen is or if there's a furnace or running water or anything like that).6. If you've ever mentally calculated the protein content of a piece of your own birthday cake.7. If you'd vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger regardless of of his views, policies or even what he's running for.8. If everybody you know asks you to help them when they move ...

Cathie Jung
2007-05-05 22:16:00
Ive been 'cutting up' since Feb and my waist is still nowhere near thissize. Cath ie holds the world record for having the smallest waist in the world.( no shit !)How big ?About 15 inches !Where are her internal organs ?By the looks of it they are now stored in her tricep area - adding to the size of her bingo wings.Where can I find out more about Cathie ?Google this, " corset wearing granny with the waist the size of a babies head " or alternatively visit her site -http://www.cathiejung.com/index.html

Male Implants !
2007-05-03 20:50:00
Check this guys pics out - A male boob job where 'pecs' are put in to give males a more manly chest ! Personally I think they look terrible. These bad boys cost around 8000 dollars + and they dont even help increase your bench press.Imagine how much personal training and supplements you could buy with that sort of money and actually have muscles that move weight. Not only that, to kit out your whole body with biceps, calves etc would run into serious money - all for fake muscles !Would you buy them ??

Another one for the collection !
2007-04-26 23:42:00
Coming into the summer you see more and guys working on the chest and guns trying to get buff. What you also notice is that their workout partner(s) is helping them lift all the weight !Why put 200kg on the bench press if you cant do it at all and your mate ends up doing deadlifts with the bar when its meant to be your set !Id love to wear this t-shirt in the gym and just point at the slogan next time some numpty wants me to do upright rows with his bench press.(click the 'shop' label to view previous t shirts, also view the Cafepress link on the right hand side)

Home Gym - Good or Bad ?
2007-04-20 23:38:00
If I had the room for it and plenty of kit I probably would like to try training at home although for me its just handy training in between clients.Pro's* No numpties hogging machines.* You control the environment - music / temperature.* You can train in the nip.* No strange looks when you attempt something new.* No travelling involved.* No sales guys trying to torture you into bringing down 14 mates to join every time you workout.* If you want some new kit - just buy it !Con's* Bench pressing heavy with no one else around could lead to high dentist costs / plastic surgery.* A good home gym could cost big money. A bench is OK, but what about dead lifts / squats etc ?* It takes motivation to train alone at home without others working out around you.* Have you got space for the kit you need ?* Its hard to learn new ideas when there is no mingling with like minded individuals or trained staff. How many of you train at home ? If so - why ? Have I missed anything out of the lists above ...

Hula Aerobics
2007-04-19 00:08:00
As if the previous classes I've mentioned weren't bad enough, I've just gone and found - Hula Aerobics !Words in Italic are nothing to do with me - my review would be slightly different. :-)As featured in NOW magazine, Hula Hooping is the latest new fitness craze, with celebrities including Beyonce Knowles having given their seal of approval to the health benefits it offers.Did you know that hulaing for 10 minutes burns 100 calories? Well, it's true, and it's great fun too.The DVD provides the complete Hula workout, and is sure to help shift some of the extra pounds we all gain over the Christmas break! Christabel managed to lose four stones through hooping!10 minutes Hula hooping burns 100 calories - wow - After an hour you could almost burn off half a biscuit. I'm hanging up my lifting straps !
