How To Get More Fruits and Veggies Into Your Diet
2008-02-25 19:06:00
Nutrition experts tell you that you need to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. You may already know that a lot of people don’t even get five servings every day, god knows I don’t!  In fact, if you ask most people, they don’t even come close!  Fruits and vegetables should make up a large portion of your diet. They are low in calories, which is good, and they are high in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber, which is even better.  Eating the suggested amount of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis is difficult for many people. Busy schedules, eating on the run, and the temptation of junk foods are all barriers to getting enough fruits and vegetables into your diet. Do you need some help getting more fruits and vegetables into your diet? Here are some tips: Make Fruits and Vegetables Convenient at Home.  Apples, pears, bananas, oranges and cherry tomatoes don’t need any refrigeration. Keep your frui...

Just Do It
2008-02-23 20:38:00
In reading the comments that have been left this past week, it seems that a lot of you are in an exercise hump. As in, no one is doing what they WANT to be doing to reach their goal. With that observation, I bring you this advice: Just do it. Get off your duff and do something. ANYTHING. Just get your bod moving. Here are some ideas that will hopefully help anyone who needs a little push: It has been scientifically proven that it takes a mere 21 days to make something a habit. That isn’t much of a span to fight something off actually. Why don’t you start with a short 10 minute walk three times per week. Certainly everyone of us can spare the 10 minutes to walk up and down our street for 10 minutes. You do this for a couple of weeks and look at that, you are in the habit. I know that many of you are setting at home, iced and snowed in right now. Not all of you have the privilege of living in paradise like I do. You think there is no way that you can exercise without...
The End of the Week…
2008-02-22 19:14:00
It’s Friday which means Weigh-in day!!  But what else does it mean?  Does it mean that you are done with your healthier eating habits until Monday?  For many people it means exactly that.  For some reason we choose to make Friday the start of an “insta-party” which means we eat anything we want to eat, any time.  Just because the work week is ending, and the weekend brings lunch dates, dinner dates, and full days at home with plenty of access to the refrigerator, does not mean that it gives us free reign to eat whatever we want!  This weekend I want you to challenge yourself - Eat exactly the same this weekend as you have this past week (only if you’ve eaten well of course ) Do not give yourself any excuses to slack off and eat the fatty, greasy foods that you know you like.  Not only will it give you a great feeling when you keep to your new healthier way of eating, but it will give you a bigger weight loss next Frid...

The Biggest Loser
2008-02-20 12:48:00
Has anyone been watching this show?  I love it!  Every time I watch it I feel like I could run 5 miles, lol… but alas I never seem to Well tonight I had even more motivation to lose the weight.  I’m not sure what week we’re in, but I know its pretty far along in the season and I just figured something out! Do you know the brothers Mark and Jay?  It wasn’t until tonights episode when they sent him home that I realized that I knew him!  I had always thought he looked familiar but I just figured he looked like every other guy from Mass that I used to know.  Turns out that we went to the same Catholic school.  He was in a grade ahead of me, and since our school was so small (25 people or so in each class total), we used to hang out together!  One Halloween party we were playing spin the bottle and I had to kiss Mark Kruger in a closet for like 7 minutes How funny is that!  He had gained so much weight that I to...

Abs, Prizes and a Contest. Oh My!
2008-02-19 19:34:00
I don’t know about the rest of you, but my abs are easily the sore spot of my bod. No, they don’t hurt me. They are the part of me that I use to judge how fit I am. I look at my stomach and what do I see? Well, I need a tan. But that is not what I am writing about today. I have some stretch marks. Not much I can do about that at the moment. Damn kids. I see some saggy skin. I think that is what happens in the process of dropping almost 50 pounds....up until about 2 months ago, it was what I didn’t see that was frustrating me. I didn’t see muscle. NOTHING. I was one big blob of jiggly blubber. I learned about 12 years ago, how to do a proper sit up. Today, I am passing that knowledge on to you because most people waste so much energy doing them wrong.  Did you know, that you do not, I repeat, do NOT go all the way to your knees? That is the wrong way to do them. You also, don’t rock or curl your head. You don’t lock your feet under the couch...

The Truth About Chinese Food
2008-02-18 19:58:00
Big Shocker - Chinese food is unhealthy for you! A lot of you are now saying, “um, duh!” because you may have already known this.. But did you know HOW unhealthy it is for you?  According to a study last year, Chinese restaurants have unacceptable levels of fat and sodium in their food.  And we’re not talking just a “little” unacceptable either!  There is no question that as Americans (or Canadians here in some cases) have taken a liking towards sweet, salty sauces and dishes that include many of their deep fried meats such as General Tso’s chicken and sweet and sour pork.  When served with fried rice you are basically ordering a heart attack right then and there.  Chinese food also is made with a ton of oil and thick soy sauce which although gives it a great flavor, just clogs up the arteries each and every time you put a forkful in your mouth.  That doesn’t mean that you can stick to the stir-fry veggi...

Sugar and Spice those things aren’t so nice
2008-02-16 16:38:00
Today’s post is not going to be easy for most people to read. Today, I am going to talk to you about sugar. Real and fake. Sugar in it’s simplest form is the juice from a cane plant. A plant. That makes it ok right? In the pure form yes. but in the bleached out processed crap that we commonly know as sugar, no. When sugar is processed, all of the enzymes, fiber and vitamins are zapped right out of it. Leaving us with something that has absolutely no nutritional value what so ever. Yep, it sure makes those cupcakes taste good but wouldn’t you rather have those cupcakes sweetened with something that can actually do something decent for your body? That’s right, you have options that actually don’t taste like crap. Lets start with the good options: Agave nectar. Its sweet and yummy and is in a pure form. Meaning that the vitamins and nutrients are still there. It absorbs slowly into the blood stream too so you won’t have those quick sugar high...

OMG I am NOT old!!!
2008-02-14 17:02:00
Yesterday, Jasmine made a post about something that is way too cool not to share with you all. It was a site that calculated your REAL age. You know, that number that your body actually is based on the abuse you have dished out to it over the years? Yeah. THAT one. I took the test. I have my results. The only reason that I am posting this is because it didn’t tell me that I was in my mid 80’s and ready to find myself a nice plot of land to put my bones into. The test itself took me about 20 minutes to complete. That was only because Jasmine warned us in her post, to answer the questions honestly and completely. I had to hunt down my vitamin bottles and then read all the stupid fine print. So anyway, the test asks fairly basic questions at first. Height, weight, birthdate, sex, etc. Then the questions turn to your health. The actual family history. Diseases, injuries and what not. Then it asks about your habits and lifestyle.  How much you exercise, what you ea...
Let’s Talk Shall We?
2008-02-13 19:39:00
We interrupt our health and fitness blog for a little chat… Yesterday, Shelah and I were talking about what is going on here at Our Wicked Weighs, and I have to say, we’re kind of bummed.  Let me tell you why… We have lost a lot of readers here over the time when we first started our first blog till now.  I understand with it being down too long that it caused people to forget about us - perfectly understandable!  But even over the past few weeks we have lost a lot of readers.  That is why I come to you - our faithful readers who comment every day.  What the heck are we doing wrong?  Why is it that no one could be bothered to enter our poetry writing contest to win a gift certificate?  I guess that got to us because we really thought you all would jump all over it.  We understand that not everyone here is a poet - so fine… we’ll try another contest.  We feel as if our blog is becoming stale, and we nee...

The Couch to 5K Run
2008-02-12 17:09:00
The 5K run… something that marathoner’s would scoff at, yet something that I know I can’t do, and I know a lot of us here can’t do it either.  It is as simple as running 3 miles and yet, it is something that I haven’t done for many many years.  After my treadmill post last week there were a few people who mentioned that they may be interested or had already started the Couch to 5K Run.  It is a program that basically gets your ass off the couch and puts you into training so that in as little as 2 months you can run a 5K.  I started hunting around and what I found is that there are a lot of different versions of the Couch to 5K run.  One in particular is one that I think a lot of people use.  By starting just 20 to 30 minutes 3 times a week, it gives you 2 months to get up to running 3 miles.  It sounds great - for some people - but not necessarily for me.  It has you alternating jogging for 60 seconds, and wal...
The Skinny on Skinny Bitch
2008-02-11 10:51:00
I have been waiting to write this post since I first began writing here. Today, I get to share with you all, a review of MY diet plan. Please keep in mind that for me to drop 33 pounds in a mere 4 months, I chose an extreme plan. What I have done, I do not consider a “diet plan”, but rather a lifestyle change. I absolutely have no intention of going back to my old ways. At. All. The things that I am doing and enjoying now will be the staples of my life until the day that I take my last breath. THAT is how strongly I believe in my “plan”. I bring you Skinny Bitch . I am not sure that this book even constitutes a diet plan but this book is the plan that I am following. As well as Jasmine and guess what? It’s working perfectly for us. SB is written by two ladies that were once meat eaters, Rory Freeman and Kim Barnouin.  They are sassy and funny...and blunt. They are both full on vegans. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that term, it means t...

Organic vs Conventional
2008-02-09 16:47:00
I am not sure if you guys are aware, but I am a participant in an organic food co op. I go every other week, drop off a check for 43 bucks and pick up 25 - 35 POUNDS of fresh, organic produce. I never know what I am going to get in my boxes. It’s like Christmas for me. This past month, hub and I have been working on our finances. We were trying to evaluate whether or not the food co-op is worth the 43 bucks biweekly or if we should cut that out of our lives. Reality is, there is maybe one or two items that we don’t use each time. The rest gets consumed via snacks and meals for the newly armed vegetarian moi. I love, love, love veggies. My question was really whether or not it made a difference to pay extra for organic. Let’s face it, that crap is expensive. What exactly does it mean when something sports that beautifully attractive organic label anyway? That is a great question. Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources ...
Which weigh did he go?
2008-02-08 16:08:00
I am not sure what happens in your home the day before weigh in. In my house, I am chugging water, eating less, doing extra time on the treadmill...basically anything I can think of to put up the smaller numbers. Why do we only get in this mode when weigh in approaches? My take on that one is that it’s because we don’t want to disappoint ourselves when we step on the scale on Friday. (or in some cases - Saturday at WW) Am I the only one who gets a frantic rush of “OMG I have to drop this week” happening on Thursdays? I can’t be. What I plan to do next week is to just work my fanny off ALL week long. Then I don’t have to freak out the day before. Wouldn’t THAT be smart? I am offering up a challenge to you all for this next week. Pretend that every day is weigh in. Come here, post your weight every single day in the comments. Just for next week...be the obsessive compulsives that I know you can be. Let’s see if the new mind set wil...

The Real Deal With Personal Trainers
2008-02-07 16:48:00
Our long time buddy here Amy from Blu’s Zoo had her first meeting with a personal trainer.  I thought we would ask her to guest post so she can give us the low down on what having a personal trainer is really like.  I know for me, it is has always been an intimidation factor that I have not signed up for a personal trainer.  I keep thinking that I was too fat and that they would laugh at me, or that I couldn’t do even the basic of exercises based on my weight.  Although I’m sure I’d do okay, it is great to have a personal experience from someone who went through it.  So here is Amy’s take on her personal training experience: So I had my fitness meeting with a personal trainer at the local Y and went over the SMART program and my goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Real istic & Time Oriented Goals ( I guess SMARTOG just didn’t roll off the tongue like Smart does). I went in with a very clea...

Spinach Risotto
2008-02-06 19:15:00
I just made this last night for dinner. It’s one of our family favorites. I first cooked it about 5 years ago. I haven’t looked at the recipe in ages. That is how I am with recipes though. I will look at them to get ideas and then make adjustments to it in order to make it mine. This one is no different. It was actually Ham and Spinach Risotto when I first saw it all those years ago. I have adapted it to our family and what we now enjoy, is listed below. 1 large red pepper - diced 1 onion - diced 2 - cups fresh mushrooms - thinly sliced 1 package frozen spinach 4 cups white rice - uncooked 4 cups vegetable broth In a large skillet, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Saute the diced red pepper, onions and mushrooms until tender. Set aside. Cook frozen spinach according to directions. Set aside. In a large skillet, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir in uncooked rice. Mix over low heat until rice is completely coated with olive oil. Pour in vegetable broth. H...

Let’s Walk!
2008-02-05 17:49:00
Ah, the easiest exercise in the world, but the hardest to get up and do.  Walk ing and I have a love hate relationship.  I love it when I do it, but I hate to do it.  I even have a treadmill in my bedroom, but alas, it is the best clothes hanger I have ever had as well.  I used to walk a couple of miles a day - or at least till I got up to 60 minutes.  At first I could only do about a 22 mile, but I worked my way up to about 18 minutes and then I stopped.  I tried running to see if I liked it better but that hurt my knees too much.  The other day I was doing my yoga DVD and I swear I thought - jeesh, I should be walking, it’s easier!  So, if its easier, why am I not doing it? Well I figured it out.  I hate my treadmill… it doesn’t have enough bells and whistles to keep me occupied.  It is so loud that I can barely hear the television over it, and the fan is broken so I sweat like a pig.  That is a good thing ...
Exercising At Work
2008-02-04 20:42:00
Due to the depression I feel over the Patriots loss in the super bowl last night, we interrupt this regular Monday post and instead replace it with an archived post from the previous blog.  I instead will be crawling back in bed and try to avoid eating myself out of house and home today.  Enjoy! Let’s face it - to lose the weight we want to lose, we need to incorporate exercise into our day (The Horror!). However, many of us have jobs that consist of sitting in front of a computer all day. I know I do - in fact, as a freelance writer I can sit sometimes for 8 to 10 hours only getting up to pee and eat! Unfortunately a desk job is one of the worst jobs you can have while you are on a diet. You are basically sedentary all day without any exercise whatsoever… or are you? You can certainly get plenty of exercise and stretching even while sitting at your computer! Here are some tips on how: Sit properly in a good chair designed for desk work. Your back should be strai...

*taps screen* Is this thing on? Not one entry for the poetry contest. Not one single entry. And I even had a prize. *sigh* Not a very adventurous group here huh? Ok ok I will come up with something else to entice you all. Now, that my scolding is over, lets get down to business. It’s Friday. That means one thing. Weigh In for our fellow wicked readers. I have still been managing to struggle as I adjust to my new lifestyle. I really haven’t been as strict as I was when I first began. I know that is why I hit my wall a couple of weeks ago and the darn scale didn’t budge. I think that as of this past week, I am back on track though. Nothing screams at me better than a non moving scale and a goal that is still not any closer. I have been overweight, bordering on obese for at least 13 years. I kept rationalizing that the extra 5 pounds was aok. It’s only 5 pounds. Then I would add another 5 and say “It’s only 5 pounds” until suddenly, I was...

I like to move it, move it
2008-01-31 17:35:00
I spend a lot of time at my desk. Setting on my fanny. More times than not, I struggle with getting off my ass and exercising.  I think my biggest struggle with exercise is that I get bored easily. I need something fun. I need something with music or I will simply hate it. I can not stand the idea of having to drag my butt to a gym to work out. I know that won’t work for me. This made me think of you all. We are all on the same quest to get healthy. What is it that you all are doing for exercise? I work out at TaeKwonDo class twice a week. I also own a Play Station. It’s mine. Not my kids’. I purchased it solely for the purpose of having my very own DDR. Dance Dance Revolution. I know it sounds silly. A 37 year old woman playing a game on PlayStation but I am telling you, it is a blast. The game comes with a work out mode that tracks your calories burned the amount of time you are actually moving and the difficulty of your “workout”. This to me ...

Emotional Eating
2008-01-29 17:32:00
Hi there. My name is Queenie, and I have an eating disorder. Well at least I used to. I was an emotional eater. This has been one of my stumbling blocks since I began trying to lose weight. I know that I am not the only one either. How many times have you had a horrible day, driven home and walked into the kitchen to grab a Pepsi...or a cookie...or some other something that isn’t so good for you? Not because you were hungry, but because you knew it would make you FEEL better? THAT is exactly what emotional eating is. You do not eat because you are hungry. You eat because your emotions tell you that it will make you feel better. Emotional Eating is the most misdiagnosed eating disorder on the planet. Most people are raised this way and have no clue what it is doing to them. Face it, grandma setting you down to enjoy a nice meal after you got dumped in high school...that teaches you to be an emotional eater. Think where you would be right now if Granny would have taught you t...
A Weary Monday
2008-01-28 22:17:00
Wow, I’m very late in posting this - I try to get something out as early as possible, but this morning I just completely forgot!!  (Hangs my head in shame).  Honestly, I’m tired, and I KNOW its because of the crap I ate this weekend.  I can’t even tell you the amount of fatty foods I ate this weekend.  I’m not sure why - I do however know that I was eating not because I was hungry, but it was strictly emotional eating.  We have talked about this before, but emotional eating can be very difficult to stop.  For me, it’s my comfort.  McDonald’s is my comfort.  It wasn’t necessarily a bad weekend but the stress that I have been under has gotten a bit much for me, which has in turn led to my bad eating.  I know a lot of us experience this, and what I want to know, is how do the people that are losing weight combat this?  How do you just say no? Here are some solutions that I found while searc...

That yucky “S” word
2008-01-26 18:09:00
It does bad things to us emotionally and physically. Stress. It even sounds yucky. I have been dealing with it a bunch lately. Face it, it’s everywhere. We can’t escape it. But we can do a few things to reduce it in our lives. Did you know that certain foods can contribute to the way your body responds to stress? Certain foods act as a direct stimulant to your body and can therefore be a direct cause for the yucky way your body responds to stress. Caffeine. It causes the release of adrenaline which increases the level of stress. Sure, most of the time, you feel like it wakes your body up. Stimulates the brain and lets you function. But what does it do to the inside of your body? Caffeine can cause headaches, digestive problems, it can irritate your stomach and contribute to constipation, fatigue, anxiety and depression. Think about the first thing that doctors tell heart patients to give up when they are diagnosed....yup. Caffeine. Sounds like something that is good f...

It’s Weigh-In Day!
2008-01-25 19:08:00
I know, you are sitting there thinking… darn, isn’t there something I need to do today?  Well there sure is!  You need to weigh-in of course It’s Friday and today we are going to all think positive, hop on that scale, and see the pounds just fall off.  Well some of us anyhow For me, I saw an addition of 2 pounds even.  BUT… on my behalf it is the day before “that time of the month” so I think I’m holding a little water, and I ate WAY too late last night which I am sure isn’t good for my weight loss.  Speaking of which, I wanted to discuss the truth about eating late at night, and what it does for your diet. As you probably know if you ever watch Oprah, she and Bob Greene firmly agree that you need to have a cut off period at night in order to allow your food to digest which can lead to weight loss.  For the most part I agree with this.  I mean, the fact is, whether you eat at 7pm for the las...

The Reward Factor
2008-01-22 17:28:00
Many people trying to lose weight often think of the goal weight as the reward - but that is so often not the case.  At least, it shouldn’t be if you are seriously trying to lose weight.  Reward s can be found throughout your weight loss process - and most importantly - should be found!  I reward myself for every 5 pounds I lose.  For some reason for me, 5 pounds seems much more doable then the 81.2 that I still have to lose.  Sometimes I treat myself to a new book, or a night out with the girls.  Sometimes I even reward myself with a couple of hours of silence away from my son.  No matter how big or small the reward, it is really the mind set behind it.  I have something to strive for, and a smaller goal to reach so that I have incentive to keep going.  If you are not planning your rewards then you really don’t know what you are missing!  It is important when losing weight that you write down your small goals and your ...

Vegetarian Gal
2008-01-21 16:20:00
Yep. That is me. As of January 7, 2008. I wish I could tell you how bad it sucks. How much I miss eating meat...but I can’t. The truth is - I absolutely love the way I feel right now. I made the decision to go veg back in October when Jasmine introduced me to the book “Skinny Bitch”. Now, you may be wondering how an overweight gal that was raised in the midwest, loving meat and potatoes, could make this choice and actually be successful. Quite simply: I read everything I could get my hands on and I took it slow. Very slow. At first, I rid myself of red meat. This was probably the most difficult of my choices. I had one last meal - A philly cheese steak sub and then called it quits. I knew it would be the last time I had beef so I had hub get me something that I really enjoyed. I savored every single bite of that huge sub. The juices dripped down my chin. The cheese was hanging off my mouth. Then, when it was gone, I wiped my mouth, brushed my teeth and was done...

Bread is not Satan
2008-01-19 16:51:00
One of the most important things that I had to do when I made the leap into vegetarianism (Is that even a word?) was to find a way to supplement my protein. You know, find it without all the animal products. It sounds like a daunting task but in reality, it was simple. 2 words - whole grains. I added in whole grains in every way possible to my diet. Yes, ladies still eating bread. Just eating the good for your bod kind. Here is what the lovely people that put together our beautiful food pyramid have to say about grains: What foods are in the grain group? Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread , pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. (Repeat after me: Whole grains - good, refined grains - bad. ) Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel—the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples include: wh...
