Queenie and the Bean Sprouts
2008-06-07 21:56:00
See Queenie’s sprouter. See Queenie’s sprouter grow delicious fresh sprouts. See Queenie happy and healthy.  This is my sprouter. I purchased it for 19 dollars on Amazon. I had no idea at the time, how addicting this nice little appliance was going to be for me. Otherwise, I would have purchased 2 or 3 of them. This handy little gadget grows me three different types of sprouts, fresh in my kitchen in only 4 days. I love my sprouter almost as much as I love sprouts. Beneficial little things too. They are a famous health food. But they are also getting some good press as being disease fighters too. Sprouts contain plant compounds that can help protect us against diseases. Alfalfa sprouts have an amino acid in them that has shown to protect against pancreatic, colon and leukemia cancers. Plant estrogens increase bone formation and density and prevent osteoporosis. They are also helpful in controlling hot flashes, menopause, PMS and fibrocystic breasts tumors. Alfalfa...

Weigh In Friday!
2008-06-06 15:38:00
Quite frankly, lately I have been up and down about weighing in but this week I kicked some ass!  I lost 3.4 pounds I could have even lost more by now because I weighed in early, because you know, I just felt… lighter, lol.  I wish I could say that it was all that exercise but nope - it was better food choices.  I really made a very conscious effort to watch everything I ate.  I worked very hard at my portion control and not snacking mindlessly.  I did walk 2 days but it wasn’t anything to write home about… about 30 minutes each time.  But I felt good that I made that effort as well as constantly checking my food intake.  I ate home this week all except one day which I’m sure made a huge difference as well.  My water intake is something to be desired though - normally I’m a 6 bottle a day water drinker but I admit to doing something I haven’t done regularly in 3 years plus… I bought a bottle of soda this week, and I drank it...

An Angel in our Midst
2008-06-05 17:45:00
Fellow Wicked People - We have an angel among us. His name is Eric Gamble. He wrote to Erin and I with a request for some help. After reading his email, and then scoping out his web site, we decided that he deserved a coveted spot here in our wicked playground. You see, Eric is on a weight loss journey. Not only that, he is going to make it a personal challenge. And you all know how much Erin and I love challenges, right? So here is the deal: Eric is trying to lose 25 pounds in 14 weeks. He wants people to donate 1 dollar per pound which he is going to donate to a great charity - Angel ’s Place. Angel’s Place is a charity that offers help and support to children with terminal illnesses and their families. You can read more about this great charity here. Since Wicked Weighs is all about health and weight loss and Erin and I love to help people, we are going to keep his cute little banner up until his challenge is over on August 20th. Not only that, we are pledging $1 pe...
Hydroxycut - The Real Story
2008-06-04 15:02:00
Jasmine wrote in a comment that she was now using Hydroxycut and she then said that before we put her down because of it (which we totally never would - we’ve all done our own types of diets!!) that we review it and see what it is all about.  So I did just that This is what I have come up with… The answer to the question if hydroxycut is effective is difficult without taking a look at its ingredients to see if it is comprised of effective fat burners.  Perhaps you are aware that hydroxycut has undergone a recent major change in it formulation. This is because it used to contain ephedra (along with other ingredients).  Ephedra has been banned by the FDA. And, therefore, the makers of hydroxycut had to revise the product’s formula. Here are some of the key ingredients in the new formula that are very promising: green tea leaf extract guarana extract Both of thesee will help boost the body’s metabolism and help burn fat.  Caffeine is naturally pr...

The Fruit, The Veggies - The Legend
2008-06-03 17:29:00
Gypsie recently posted that she wanted to know why I became a vegetarian. I really don’t recall if I posted the WHY’S about this topic before, I only recall posting that this is what I am doing. This is going to be a long one people. I apologize. Back in October (2007) I weighed 207 pounds. I felt like total crap ALL THE TIME. I was suffering from panic attacks and had MAJOR issues with low blood sugar. In my family, there was heart disease, diabetes, and cancer running rampant. I was scared. I had tried every diet on the planet - except the grapefruit diet because I can’t stand grapefruit. But everything else, been there, done that. I had watched my friends do the yoyo thing on Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig for years. I knew there had to be a way to “fix” myself and get my life back. In waltzes Wicked Weighs. Yep. This place. I came in here to read a post that Erin had written about Weight Watchers. Then found Jasmine’s post about a lovely little book that she r...

I Swear I’m Here!
2008-06-02 23:05:00
Sorry for the late Monday post and skipping the Saturday post!  I feel like my life has all been a whirlwind lately.  So much to do, so very little time!  I spent Saturday afternoon doing exactly what Queenie suggested - I made my full month of June meals.  I was down 4 days because I’m going to Michigan this weekend but I was able to come up with enough meals for all the rest of my dinners with the exception of one per week - I alloted myself one night of going out to dinner per week and one day for lunch.  I didn’t go nuts on my lunch plans because quite frankly I am much more of a sandwich and veggie/fruit girl then I am to actually get my ass off the computer to make myself chicken salad or something.  I think this will only work for me and for the rest of you if you are realistic about what you put out for meals.  I know that I’m not going to make a dinner every night so I had to account for antipasto night with light turkey and light...

Planning and Clutter
2008-05-31 18:53:00
I am almost embarrassed to admit this but...I am a bit anal. Oh, who am I kidding. I am a lot anal. I have lists for everything and a planner that tells me when i can pee. Yes. PATHETIC. The one thing that I do that I want to share with you all is my menu planning. Organization is key to so many things in life. Especially when life is moving at such a fast pace. The one thing that I organize is our family menu. I literally am lost if I don’t have this. I print out a free monthly calendar from http://www.printfree.com and then set down at the beginning of each month and fill that sucker in with all of the dinners for my family. Yep. Seems a bit odd but it keeps me from doing a lot of stupid stuff. Menu planning will make sure that you: never ever wander around the grocery store and impulse shop. This saves money, time and a whole lot of calories. don’t become a binge take out person. You don’t default to take out or order in’s when you plan ahead. can make smart ch...

Well, It’s Friday
2008-05-30 23:59:00
You all know what that means. Weigh in. The past few weeks, I have been dreading Friday s. Mainly because my scale has just been teetering back and forth between 170 and 169. It’s been torturing me. BADLY.  Well, after a few days of pondering my self worth and my ability to actually not give up on this life I have going for myself, I made some realizations. Quite simply, I just need to stop making excuses for myself. When things get hard for me, I turn to food. I am an emotional eater. That hasn’t changed just because I cleaned up my diet. I still get all wimpy and head for my fridge. It’s a habit that I have had for 30+ years. I can’t imagine that it’s just going to go away. Well, the past few weeks, I have slipped back to the self doubtful, wimpy gal that I used to be. Only I didn’t reach for Pepsi this time. I just have been eating non fricken stop. Not good when you are trying to make that scale move south. Ya know? I am in the process of reading this reall...

A New Approach
2008-05-29 17:24:00
When this site first began, I think that Erin planned for it to be a site that housed a bunch of information about weight loss. A place for people to come, to be filled with anything they needed to attack dieting and weight loss effectively. I think that it has accomplished that. At some point though, our focus, as readers, is changing. We are not ALL on that scale frenzied weight loss journey anymore. Some of us are. But some of us are just wanting health information. At some point, the focus has to change a bit. I don’t want to mislead anyone. I am still trying to drop my last 20 pounds. But somewhere along my journey, I realized that I needed to make life changes and long time commitments in order to make that happen and I don’t need the numbers from my scale every single day to keep me heading in the right direction. I have said it a million times, but here it comes again: If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you can’t diet. Dieting is a temporary fix to a long t...
Get To Walking!
2008-05-28 20:03:00
Walking is not just about getting on the treadmill, putting on your iPod and struggling through 30 to 60 minutes of walking in the same place, looking at the same things you have done for the past few months.  Firing up your imagination means you can find plenty of places other than on the treadmill or in the neighborhood park, to get in 30 minutes of walking to help you stay fit. Besides, a change of scenery may do you good. Here are some places you may have never thoughts about to get your next walk in: • Museum. Stroll through the galleries for plenty of visual stimulation. Here’s a plan: pass first through all the galleries and climb the steps or walk for a half-hour, then go back and revisit the art that caught your attention the first time through. • Ballpark. Take in America’s pastime, but get out of your seat at the baseball game and walk around the stadium. Big-league stadiums are plenty large for a good, brisk walk, and many minor-league parks aren’t...

Kickin’ the Habits
2008-05-27 22:34:00
Today, at Wicked Weighs, it is officially “Kick it to the Curb” day. I declared it. So it is. We are using today, this mere 24 hours to kick an unhealthy thing from our lives. It can be anything you wish. Just commit and kick it - for 24 hours. Today, I am kicking diary out of my life. Yep. I am a cheese addict. That is the one thing that I have been unwilling to give up completely. Even though I know how horrible it is for me. I think I love cheese even more than Jasmine does. That is HUGE. I have read countless things about how it is full of saturated fat, calories and other yuckie stuff etc. yet I refuse to give it up. I don’t even have a moment of guilt when I eat it either. I just ignore the things that I know about it and go to town. Well, today, I am ridding myself of it. Completely. So what are you guys giving up today? Post it here and let us know.

Time For Reflection
2008-05-26 15:45:00
We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to talk to you about what today really means… Today we are going to go over the houses of our friends and family or maybe even just stay home while we fill up on hot dogs, hamburgers, and potato salad.  While we are enjoying this great day that we have come to love so much, let’s not forget all the women and men who have fought and are still fighting for our country.  We have lost 4082 since the war began and the numbers just seem to get higher and higher with each passing day.  These are fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters - and while we’re out having fun we need to take a moment to think about them and why we really should be celebrating Memorial Day.  It is a day to remember the people who have given their lives to keep our country safe.  By all means, enjoy your day… and don’t eat too much!  Weigh-in day is only 4 days away

It’s not the smokeout
2008-05-24 19:55:00
Each year, hundreds of thousands of people participate in the great American smoke out. It is one day each year that smokers commit to snubbing the habit. Well, if they can do it, so can we. Right? I am not talking about smoking though. I am talking about just kicking one of your bad habits for one day. Maybe you are a soda drinker. You know it’s bad for you, but you consume away. Perhaps, you are trying to kick the red meat addiction you have. Chocolate. Sweets in general. I am officially declaring Tuesday May 27th as “Kick it to the Curb” day. That’s right. One day, that all of us here at Wicked Weighs are going to give up something that we know is bad for us. It can be anything you want. The worse it is for your health, the better. Think about what you are going to give up for that 24 hour period. Come back here on Tuesday and post it in the comments. If we all give up one bad thing just for one day, think how much healthier we may be in the end? One day. 24 hours. ...
The Scale Never Lies
2008-05-23 20:07:00
Dead Even… That’s where I’m at on the scale.  Exactly the same that I was 2 weeks ago.  Bleh. You know what? I shouldn’t even say bleh - I should be rejoicing - I mean I haven’t eaten right, I haven’t exercised and quite frankly I haven’t done anything to make myself healthier and more in shape.  No excuses here - I guess I just didn’t do what I needed to do.  What about you all?  We got to start getting those numbers down ladies!  Everyone used to be so excited about losing weight and with the exception of a select few I don’t feel the oomph from you guys… or from myself actually!  I want oomph!  How are we going to get oomph?  Well I haven’t figured that out yet, and when I do I’ll certainly let you know

We must ask ourselves…
2008-05-22 18:15:00
We are all on the same path. It is what has joined us together as an online group here at Wicked Weighs. We all want to either improve our health or lose weight. Sometimes, both. I have preached the importance of setting goals for ourselves. I have shared mine with all of you. I have put this part of my life out there as an example to all of the readers here with hope that someone might learn something from what I am doing or not doing, whatever the case may be. At the very least, I hoped that someone may be inspired to stay on track for their own journey. But today, I ask you guys, what are you doing? Really. It’s just not enough for us to set back and make some vague claim that we want to be healthy or lose weight. I mean, honestly, how easy is that reply? Q- What are you doing here? A - I want to lose weight.  Bleh. That answer has no commitment. None. Anyone can say it. Who do you know that isn’t trying to drop a pound or two? What you need to do, is get serious. Put...
Out of the Mouth of Babes
2008-05-21 18:35:00
Something happened to me last night that I’m not sure that I even want to admit, much less relive but I thought it was important to share in case some of you have gone through similar situations.  My son and I went to see an early evening movie just the two of us.  It is something nice that we enjoy together and we always get there a little early so we can actually have some conversation which seems to be dwindling in this house with me trying to find work and his new infatuation with all things television.  So, I was excited and generally in a really good mood as I always am when we get to spend some going out time together.  We got our popcorn and waters and sat down in the theater, and I was in the aisle seat as I always am.  It started filling up pretty quickly but I figured it wouldn’t get that busy.  As the lights start to dim there was a mother and son also who I could see looking for a couple of seats.  They sat down directly behind ...

Interval Training
2008-05-20 17:19:00
I realize as I set here with shaking limbs and tired muscles that I have been experiencing interval training for the past 6 months. Only it’s disguised as Martial Arts. Interval training, for those that aren’t familiar is when you combine aerobic workout with strength training - at intervals. Interval training has been around for literally decades. Do any of you recall in gym class when they would have you run laps, then stop and do sit ups or push ups then run more laps? That was early day interval training. Only back then, it was called physical fitness. Nothing fancy. Jillian Michaels uses interval training in all of her workouts. You jump around like a freak, then drop and do ab work, then get up and jump around again. Over and over and over until you feel like you are going to keel over. I have to say, that for a spazoid like me, interval training ROCKS! It keeps things from being boring. It keeps me entertained and distracted while I work out. It’s hard to not be dist...

How To Save Money Eating Healthy
2008-05-19 20:39:00
We have all talked about how expensive it is to eat healthy at one point or another.  The fact is that it does cost more money to eat healthy - but there are ways around it.  Just because food is on the rise when it comes to price doesn’t mean that we have to eat crap food just because “it’s cheaper.” Ramen noodles may be cheap, but they sure don’t offer much in the way of nutrition. In fact, it seems that all the affordable foods in the grocery store are pretty bad for you. However, there are ways to maintain a healthy diet for less. It takes some commitment and a little creative cooking, but the 10 tips below should help you out. Stretch Your Meat - If you are indeed a carnivore, then you know how expensive meat can be. However, you can stretch your poultry and beef out by using healthy fillers like tofu and grains. Make a Shopping List - By planning meals ahead of time and sticking to a shopping list, you will avoid any unnecessary (and unhealthy) impuls...

Now what?
2008-05-17 20:39:00
So, we have all wiped our slates, we weighed ourselves, we reset our goals, now what? I am a list maker. List are wonderful for me to get things accomplished. So naturally, I am going to suggest making a list. Lets call this one “The List o Death”. On this list, you need to write down all of the things that you are doing wrong, eating that you shouldn’t be eating and the things that you aren’t doing enough of. Basically, whatever it is about you that you know you need to change. Because, let’s face it, we all know WHAT we need to be doing, eating and not doing by now, right? My list looks like this: 1. Exercise: Everyday. No matter what. And fingers clacking on the keyboard does not count as exercise. If I am not sweating, it is not exercise. 2. Cut down portions on ALL meals. I mentioned this yesterday on one of my posts or comments. I KNOW that I am eating too much when I eat. I love food. I can’t help it but I am changing that TODAY. 3. Eat more raw foods...
Friday = Starting Over
2008-05-16 20:25:00
As Queenie mentioned yesterday, it sure seems like everyone here is a little down about their weight loss or lack thereof.  Maybe its the time of the year, or perhaps we have all been trying so long that we have simply come to the point where we need to reassess our goals - which on the whole isn’t a bad thing to do whether or not you are lacking motivation.  So, let’s use this day to not only weigh-in but to sit down and right our individual goals - both short term and long term.  When you take the time to write them down you see how completely doable they really are.  For me, I keep giving myself a whole number - 82 whopping pounds I need to lose.  Well, when put into that broad of a term I’m completely deflated before I even get my ass up and do anything about it.  That seems completely unreasonable to me!  So today I’m changing my mindset and my goals: Goal 1 - Lose 10 pounds by June 15th (10 pounds in one month may not be doable for ...

Do over!!!!
2008-05-15 18:16:00
Ya know, Erin calls everyone out and look what we find? A bunch of you that are in the exact same frustrating spot as we are in. Yep. I am frustrated. My scale seems to be in hibernate mode. I can’t find the energy to work out like I should let alone have the attitude or willpower to eat properly. Yes. It’s shocking but over the past week....I....the one and only Queenie....have eaten not one but two Hershey chocolate bars. I know. I suck. Reality is, I don’t suck. I am just human. So wicked readers, lets just wipe our slates clean and start over. Completely just start it over. I want each of you to take today to think about where you are, what you want to accomplish and how you plan to get there. Weigh yourself if you must. Or you can wait until Friday and do your first official weigh in here. I want you all to post your goals and plans here so you have something to keep you accountable. Then, get busy. I think it is important to mention that over the past month or so, ...

Vacation Recouperation
2008-05-13 18:35:00
I have spent the past four days out in the fresh air. Running around and playing non stop. I attend TKD class on Monday night and I feel like someone ran off with my body. Like I have started all over again. I am not going to spend this post being a big fat whiny butt though. I have exciting stuff to say. I have to admit, I was worried about how I would successfully keep up my good eating habits while being forced to cook over an open fire. You know, tossing a weenie on a stick just isn’t the same anymore now that I am not eating that garbage. I am here to tell you that it can be done though. I packed tons of fresh veggies. I snatched up some of my black bean burgers from the store and tossed them in the cooler. When my family was scarfing down burgers and dogs that had been flame broiled...I was scarfing down grilled veggies and black bean burgers. Oh yes. I ate like a Queenie. Even managed some sauteed mushrooms one of the nights AND had a s’more. You can’t camp without h...

I’m so tired…
2008-05-12 19:58:00
Hope everyone had a good weekend!!  See that title of the post?  Well it’s true - I’m exhausted.  I had another one of my late nights with only about 3 hours of sleep, but although usually I can function well this morning I simply can’t :( I started to look for articles for information on lack of sleep and weight gain so that I can use my experience to help you all out, but I’m too tired to read.  But I will say this… If you are a woman who gets less than 5 hours of sleep at night, you are more than likely 7 pounds heavier than someone who gets a full nights sleep every night.  Interesting fact huh?  I knew that there was indeed a correlation to weight loss and sleep, but I wasn’t sure how much or if it was significant at all… but apparently it is!  Women who get more sleep lose more weight at a faster rate.  Maybe it’s because they can actually get up and use the treadmill instead of going back to sleep, or perhaps it is be...
Your weekend health tip
2008-05-10 19:48:00
Right now, as you are reading this entry, I am camped out with my family, in Central Florida. Hopefully enjoying perfect weather and fun times. We are snorkeling, biking, hiking and cooking on an open fire. Setting out under the stars each night. Fending off wildlife...ahhhh I am probably relaxed. The reason that I am posting all of the details of where I am right now? I want to stress to you, how important it is while you are all working your butts off, trying to get healthy, to also find time to relax and chill out. It is as important as the workouts. Stress is the enemy. The big bad enemy. It does horrible things to you and your body. It messes up the way you think, the way you eat and the way you react to situations. I know this because at one point in my life, I was one stressed out cookie. Since then, I have learned to cope with stress and to rid myself of it. My biggest stress reliever is TaeKwonDo class. I get to kick things, yell, and work my fanny off at every class. Som...

Weigh-In Day!
2008-05-09 20:26:00
It’s Friday and quite frankly I am very excited!  I woke up feeling “thinner” LOL.  Do you ever have those days that you just wake up knowing that you have lost weight?  Somehow you feel less bloated and you just KNOW your clothes are going to fit well?  I just love those days.  In fact, I was so excited that I waited until I started writing this post to go and weight myself, so if you will hold on just one second I will go do that right this second… Okay, well not as much as I had hoped - but not bad!  1.2 pounds down.  Better than nothing And also better than the gain I thought I would have earlier in the week when I was eating myself out of house and home.  This week I was having a hard time again.  I think it is because we didn’t have that many groceries in the house and I kept finding reasons not to go grocery shopping which for me only means one thing - eating out!  I was always just “too busy” but yesterday I...

Not to be confused with PHAT
2008-05-08 17:30:00
It is no secret that obesity in America has been on the rise for years. Fast food places have increased their meal sizes by over 50% in the last 10 years. We are all getting fatter. The FDA has increased the acceptable daily caloric intake from 1200 to 1500 - 1800 per day. And we are still getting fatter.  Airlines have increased their seat size to accommodate larger people because god forbid, people realize that they are getting fat. Between 1995 and 2002, the number of calories Americans swigged each day more than doubled--and those from sugary quenchers like soda, fruit drinks, and alcohol quadrupled.  How much bigger do we have to get before people realize what is happening? It really is no wonder how we are all struggling each day with our weight. It shouldn’t shock us that companies that claim to have the miracle pill or quick fix are making millions. We are fat and lazy people. We want stuff handed to us and we hate to work for anything that makes us break a sw...

Making Yourself a Priority
2008-05-08 02:15:00
It’s funny - this post is late for exactly the reason that I am going to talk about… making weight loss a priority.  This morning I had to do so much stuff - go to kindergarten orientation (AAK!), bring in some dry cleaning for a suit that I am going to lend out to a friend, pick up a prescription for a neighbor who can’t drive, as well as basically cart my son to and from school, make lunch, do some work, and wait for the air conditioning guy.  Yeah, hello - was I making myself a priority today?  Of course not!  Did I get to walk this morning?  Of course not!  Will I have time to do it later?  Most likely not!  Why?  Because I am a people pleaser… if someone asks me to take on more work I will do it even if I don’t have time, if people ask me to run an errand for them because I “work from home” and seemingly have all the time in the world, I will do it - even at the expense of screwing up my exercise routine, or skipping lu...
