MEIN TAGEBüCHER
2007-11-16 23:06:00 ?SAM: I read your blog but why the hell do you keep a journal when everything you post here is basically your life diary? Don?t you know that journals are for old people??? I?m 46 and ?cool diva? on MySpace, anyway it?s way better, and blogs are replacing journals. When are you going to get hip to it? Don?t be ignorant, embrace the future.? ??Beth, MassachusettsI?ve kept a journal pretty much ever since I can remember. The contents have changed a lot over the years?as a teenager they were mostly filled with prayers, stories and sex. As an adult it?s to-do lists, numbers, and ideas. That?s my journal up there. The covering is recycled, distressed leather and the paper (also recycled) is the color and texture of a brown paper grocery bag. Tiny lines are part of the paper's grain so I can still write in straight lines (without thinking I'm that anal retentive). The pages are perforated. I love it.My friend Dan was the first person I remember using a bound journal as an adult in a bu...

THE KINGS AND I
2007-11-15 03:12:00 Bronson surprised me with some wicked seats at the Los Angeles Kings game last Saturday night. It was pretty fun, except the Kings didn?t score in the first two periods, which was kind of lame, so we left before the start of the third period. Of course that?s when the Kings scored an impossible FOUR goals in a row to tie them with the Dallas Stars, 4 to 4. Then, the Kings went on to win the game by making the fifth goal during sudden death overtime. Unbelievable! Aren?t you impressed with my use of all that jock terminology? I sure am.But seriously, I love how going to athletic events makes me feel more like a jock, even though I?ve sort of wrestled with ?jock? (the word) my entire life. Waiting in line, ticket in hand, entering the cold, hard ice arena with a couple of beers and a baseball hat on backwards, the whole thing is just so American, I mean....Canadian (apologies to Scott).
MY OTHER RIGHT
2007-11-13 23:04:00 On Sunday my wrist was aching, and rather than yak on about it to Bronson and Conny as we headed out to brunch, I sucked it up and took some ibuprofen. It helped to mask the pain, so Monday morning I headed in to train, my wrist feeling about 75 percent back to normal. Thinking I was Superman, I demonstrated an upside down movement on a Swiss Ball that requires a lot of wrist dexterity. Bad choice. You know that THX sound, ?Deep Note? at the beginning of a movie? That?s sort of how the pain felt at it spread through my right hand.Last night, ravenous after seeing the film ?Into the Wild,? I messily tried to assemble a left-handed PB&J. Bronson came to my rescue as the true hero, spreading the Trader Joe?s boysenberry jam on the sprouted wheat bread, suggesting I might use this opportunity to become ambidextrous: ?By the way, did you know that the boysenberries are genetically engineered??Ambidexterity would be nice, so I?m trying. I wrote two checks today with my left hand, (f...

SEAL CONTINUES TO AMAZE ME
2007-11-12 22:07:00 I?ve been singing the praises of Seal for years, ever since I musically dissected ?Kiss from a Rose? for my buddy Jeremy Yates during my senior year at Gonzaga. A decade later, when, on the eve of my 30th birthday, Seal?s (then just-released) ?Live from Paris? concert began playing at a trendy bar in Hamburg, Germany, I felt like the coolest kid in school. I?d heard rumblings about a new dance track by Seal, but hadn?t actually heard it yet, until this morning. As I drove Bronson?s XM-equipped Element to work, I flipped through our regular diet of dance/house satellite stations, when I heard Amazing for the first time.I?ll always remember exactly where I was when I heard this song: quarter to six in the morning, accelerating up the 134 interstate in as many beats per minute, the sun rising above a periwinkle sky. In this delicious moment, it seemed Seal had written this song just for me. That?s the magic of his writing, because anybody who?s grappled with drugs, alcohol, relationsh... More About: Conti

HEALTHY GROCERS TARGET EAST L.A.
2007-11-07 19:22:00 I?ve lived in L.A. for 10 years (can you tell I?m proud of that?) but was pretty much a ?west side boy? up until I met Bronson. My client Robert likes to chide me that I?m a ?West Hollywood Boy? but I like to think that I?m a little ahead of the boystown curve. As a new ?east sider? I?m really interested in new business openings. And finally we have our own Whole Foods Market in Pasadena. It?s being billed as ?the next evolution of Whole Foods.? WHAT CAUSES SHIN SPLINTS?
2007-11-07 00:55:00 Shin splints are actually small tears in the muscles where they connect to the shins. Shin splints can occur when an un-conditioned individual runs for the first time. The other common causes of shin splints are jumping, jogging, and even swimming. More rarely, they can even be caused by an inflammation of the connective tissue, usually resulting from a stress fracture in the bone. They are often first noticeable during the delayed, post-exercise onset of muscle soreness (or ?DOMS?). A painful condition, shin splints sometimes improve during exercise as the muscles get warmer, but they can be slow to heal. One way to prevent shin splints is to stretch the shins regularly and develop the muscle?s flexibility by walking on your heels. (Long distance runners often take long downhill courses which trains to a greater degree the quadriceps and shins). Adequate protein and calcium intake are other prevention strategies. The real long term solution, though, is grounded in learning how... More About: Shin
ASK JACK LALANNE A QUESTION
2007-11-06 00:30:00 I?ve been making a list of the People I?d Like to Meet Before I Die. So far, there are only a few names on that list: Alanis Morrissette, Oprah Winfrey, and fitness legend Jack LaLanne. A couple weeks ago, I found Jack?s website (he has a website!) and sent him an email requesting an interview, just for the hell of it. Well, last night I received word.Jack?s graciously agreed to take 10 of my questions. In pulling together my own questions for this interview, Bronson suggested that you ? the ?readers? ? might like asking a question of your own. So here?s your shot: What one question would you ask Jack LaLanne? You can submit your question either in the comments field below or via e-mail. More About: Question

SEVEN STEPS TO SEXIER ABS
2007-11-02 18:31:00 Can you give me some tips on how to lose the weight around the stomach and strengthen my abs? ?Dana, Los Angeles, CADana: While ?spot reduction? isn?t possible, there are a few ways to tackle your stomach (also known as the core). Focus on cardio training, every day. Since you mention losing weight around the area, I?m assuming that fat loss and toning the area so the abdominals become more visible is one of your goals. In order to reduce your body fat, you need to focus your attention on cardio training. If you aren?t doing any cardio yet, focus on activities that you enjoy or are likely to do: hiking, walking, or perhaps even playing a sport like soccer or tennis. Begin slowly (even as little as 5 minutes a day) and work up to 30-45 minutes of activity. Work your abs every day. Basic movements like the forward bridge, side plank or reach & touch will strengthen the muscles of your abs so that as you begin to lose body fat, your midsection will appear more toned. Don?t f... DAVID BARTON EYES L.A.
2007-11-01 02:18:00 Looks like David Barton , the gymtrepreneur from back east, has finally set his sights on Los Angeles, according to this piece from Curbed. I sort of hate to admit it, but I've long been a fan of Barton's work back east, (especially when it comes to home gym design), and I've put many of his principles and sensibilities to work at my gyms in the Hollywood Production Centers (Glendale, Hollywood) with my third, rooftop location opening downtown in January 2008. That said, I?m definitely not a fan of this campaign. Sure he has great abs, but It just screams a little queer, don?t you think? Happy Halloween. More About: Eyes
MY LUNCH
2007-10-30 22:44:00 Bronson and I made this pact that we'd only eat food that exists in our house this week. So yesterday, I got creative with tuna and brown rice. They may sound like strange bowlfellows, but I've actually eaten this dish three times in the last two days. As long as you don't get too creative, it tastes pretty good for being so nutrient dense.Sam's Brown Rice & Tuna Medley1 package "boil in bag" brown or wild rice1 can white albacore tuna (water packed)1 TB Caesar salad dressing1 TB flax seed oil (optional)Salt & pepper to taste.Boil and drain wild or brown rice. Set aside. Drain tuna and add to rice. Mix until fluffy. Add caesar dressing and flax seed oil, salt and pepper to taste. Serves two. Now, I tried topping it with cranberry sauce last night; (in my defense, the cranberry sauce was one of the "orphan" cans in the cupboard). HOW WE SAVED $5,441 THIS WEEK
2007-10-30 00:59:00 A few posts ago, I shared how Bronson and I have saved $3,024 by making some very slight changes to our lives. There are a few more money-saving ideas we've adopted since I wrote that other post, and I'm literally drooling over my keyboard to share them with you. Here's how we saved $5,441 in five more, non-earth shattering steps. Even with health insurance, there are certain PRESCRIPTION DRUGS that aren't covered or on the formulary. One of these is PROPECIA, the male pattern hair loss drug, which costs about $2.22/day. Both Bronson and I take the once daily, 1MG pill, ($2.22 a day, each). That's $4.44 every day, or $133/month for both of us. Last week while having my annual physical, I mentioned to my doctor I was taking PROPECIA, and he asked me if I'd like to save money. Turns out, the same ingredient in Propecia is available as a generic, Finasteride, at a 5MG/day dosage. I have to buy a pill cutter and split them in half, then half again, but a generic, 30-day supply o... More About: Week
WHAT CAUSES WORKOUT YAWNS?
2007-10-25 20:31:00 For some reason during the last six weeks, I'm always yawning in the middle of my weight workouts at least 3 or 4 times an hour. It happens whether I do my workout in the morning, during my lunch break, or in the evening. In the morning, I always have some men's vitamins and a protein smoothie an hour before my workout for energy, but it's still a problem. Later in the day, I always try to have a protein smoothie an hour before I get to the gym. I'm getting more rest as I've changed my sleep patterns and I've never had this problem before. Do I need something for an extra boost because I'm (gasp!) getting older? Do I need something to recharge my system? I don't seem to have this problem on my cardio days. ?Rod, Las Vegas, NVYou actually answered your own question, in the last sentence of your e-mail. Resistance training is largely anaerobic (lacking oxygen) while cardiovascular training is aerobic (in the presence of oxygen). There are many theories out there about why p... More About: Workout
SAM'S SLACK-ASS SPORTS HISTORY
2007-10-24 23:35:00 SOMETIMES I THINK IT'S HILARIOUS that I ended up working as a trainer, because if you'd known me during my youth, I was a real chubster. Believe me, it wasn't pleasant buying size "Husky" pants for school. (Even my little brother Alex used to call me "chubby in the butt" as a nickname?thanks, Alex).Despite my husk, I tried sports. Seriously, I made a valiant attempt. I thought I'd share them with you in today's post so you know I'm not just putting you on about "my journey," blah blah blah.Grade 2 ? Little League. I was seven, and all the boys in class were doing it, so of course I thought I should too. So mom took me to the sporting goods store, and I picked out my bat?a Louisville Slugger. Then I remember asking her for the money to order my uniform. Truth be told, the uniform was really the only reason I wanted to play. I never did?never went to a practice, never went to a game ? CONGRATULATIONS, JACQ & BRAD
2007-10-24 02:33:00 Bronson and I attended one of the most inspiring and perfect weddings ever this past weekend. Two of my clients, Brad and Jacqueline, were married at the Inn of the Seventh Ray in Malibu, a little, special, retreat in the middle of L.A.'s Topanga Canyon. It felt almost like a Buddhist monastery in a treehouse. My heart always leaps when I hear a couple take their vows. I remember the intensity and sincerity of those words, the passion and excitement, pressing up against the great unknown. I think the thing I'll always remember about the wedding was how present and fully themselves Jacq and Brad were. They didn't suppress tears (or laughter). Nothing was forced. There was an air of grace, simplicity, and dignity. It was, in a word, sublime. About the photo: I only wish we'd gotten a shot with Bronson and Brad in the frame, too. So, for the purposes of this post: blondes rule!We wish you a hundred years of happiness.Love,Sam, Bronson, Churchill and Max More About: Congratulations

DO WHAT YOU HATE FIRST
2007-10-22 20:39:00 When I used to make cold calls selling magazine advertising, my strategy was: "Make the hardest call first." Getting the most difficult or unpleasant call out of the way first made the rest of the day seem like a breeze.A similar principle can be used in the gym: "Do what you hate first." Whether it's abs, pull-ups, lunges, squats ? by getting this out of the way, you build your confidence through the rest of your workout. One of my clients shared a corollary to this point with me: "If it takes less than 10 minutes, just do it." I admit, I tend to procrastinate annoying little tasks. Just looking around the room right now, I can see the following things that need to be done: Clean up the broken glass from the Madonna art that the dogs knocked over this morning. Take out the trash. Write thank you notes to Dawn and Jonathan.I'll take the trash out first. More About: Hate

DUDE, THAT IS SO BROKEBACK
2007-10-20 16:48:00 I don?t know why, but somehow I ended up on Urban Dictionary this morning while checking my e-mail. (In case you don?t know, Urban Dictionary is where all those words you?ve heard out in the world that you have no idea what they mean?usually slang?are defined, then rated by users). For instance, brokeback, a new adjective meaning "anything of questionable masculinity." Or infoporn, "information that serves no purpose yet takes up valuable space in your head." Just for the hell of it, I thought, let's see if they define bronson, And they do. Who knew bronson is a synoymn for beer, (e.g., let's go pound some bronsons). Which led me to sam, which means "super at masturbation" or "sexy attractive male" in urban slang. THE GUYS I KNOW WITH HUGE CALVES
2007-10-19 01:26:00 Hey Sam, how can I get giant calves without having to get implants? I know implants for calves are ?all the rage? but I?ve also heard it?s a very painful procedure. Can you give any guidance? ?Ted, Little Rock, ArkansasBack at Gonzaga U., where I attended college, my roommate?s little brother Corey returned one summer vacation with enormous calves. The only other person I know with such ginormous calves is my buddy Kenny from Alaska (pictured) who looks like he has tennis balls implanted. If only it were that easy. Kenny?s calves are 100% natural. So, I asked Corey how he got such development in such a short time. His answer? Strength Shoes. An avid paper-route tosser, Corey told me he did his paper route every day that summer in these Strength Shoes, and that led to his massive, beautiful calf development. WHY ARE INCLINE CURLS HARDER?
More articles from this author:2007-10-18 02:10:00 Sam, I noticed that doing bicep (arm) curls in a seated, incline position on a bench is more difficult than doing them in a standing position. Why is that? ?Bob, Silverlake,The reason doing bicep curls from the seated, incline position is more difficult is because it puts your biceps at a less favorable angle and causes more muscle fiber recruitment. In layman's terms, more stress is placed on the biceps when at a 45 degree angle than from a standing position, where your arms basically hang straight down.A similar situation is caused when performing chin-ups on a bar versus the traditional pull-up. While both exercises work the back effectively, chin-ups also place an emphasis on your biceps, which makes them easier for many people. Pull-ups, on the other hand, put your biceps at a less favorable angle, making them generally more difficult to perform. For more on the difference between pull ups and chin ups, see my thoughts on the subject by clicking here. More About: Curl 1, 2, 3, 4 |
