?Drug Driving? More Likely Than Drunk Driving
2007-11-21 18:15:00
Here?s the good news: the anti-drunk driving campaigns are working. And the bad news? Well, let?s just say someone should launch an anti-using and driving campaign. According to a new study by the Australian Drug Foundation that found that of those surveyed a little more than a third of all who took opiate prescription painkillers reported driving within three hours of taking the drug. How many reported driving after drinking? Less than 14 percent.

Brain-Circuitry and Drug Addiction
2007-11-19 18:08:00
The study of the day: long-term drug use rewires circuitry in the brain so that any and all positive rewards pale in comparison to more of the drug of choice. This explains why the man who has been told by his wife that he can only come home when he gets clean just can?t stay away from using. It explains why the woman who is under threat of losing her children still can?t leave the pills alone.

2007-11-18 18:05:00
Betcha didn?t know that, huh? Anyone who?s had a few too many over a dinner meeting, a family reunion or an office party knows all too well how the filters between the brain and mouth and the brain and actions can shrivel into nothing when doused with alcohol. Throw in a few prescription painkillers, a line of coke or other ?recreational? drugs and not only are you in for a night of uncensored action but the strong possibility that it will be wrapped in a blackout as well.

2007-11-17 18:12:00

Buprenorphine for Relapse Prevention
2007-11-08 20:31:00
Yes, buprenorphine is a great way to recover from drug addiction and detox of prescription painkillers or other opioid-based drugs without dealing with withdrawal symptoms. But in the world of treatment, relapse prevention is a huge part of healing and maintaining a drug free life. Subutex and Suboxone are great for that, too.

2007-11-07 19:00:00
In the first year of its legal use for treatment of drug addiction from a doctor?s office setting, American doctors who were certified to do so wrote more than 80,000 prescriptions for buprenorphine (Subutex or Suboxone ). What is the biggest draw for those who are addicted to opiates like prescription medication or heroin? Why choose buprenorphine over the more common and better known methadone? In a word, privacy.

Methadone Versus Buprenorphine
2007-11-05 22:56:00
Substitution treatment for drug addiction is based on replacing the drug of choice with a one that mimics its actions in the body and the brain. You trick the body into thinking that a less harmful drug is the drug of choice so that you don?t go into withdrawal. Meanwhile, you are, in essence, trading down your addiction to a drug that doesn?t tear up your body as badly or carry the risks that other methods of drug ingestion might. The two that do the job: methadone and buprenorphine in the form of Subutex and Suboxone .

How Drug Cravings Work
2007-11-04 17:44:00
Drug cravings or a compulsion to use drugs even after you?ve made the decision to quit is one of the ways in which medical professionals can accurately identify drug addiction. Both a psychological and physical issue, drug craving feels almost instinctual and taming it can make you feel crazy and powerless. But how, exactly, does it work and why?

What Sparked The Change In Opiate Addiction Treatment?
2007-11-02 17:42:00
It used to be that those who suffered from drug addiction were considered to have a major problem with will-power?or ?won?t? power, to be more specific. Everyone?medical professionals included?thought that all it took to quit using drugs was to ?just say no.? As time went on and research results came in, it became much more clear: drug addiction was a chronic disease with medical characteristics and, like other chronic diseases, it was prone to relapse or recur even when it had seemingly been abolished for a time.

Buprenorphine Effectively Treats Teen Heroin Addiction
2007-11-01 19:44:00
Buprenorphine in the form of Subutex or Suboxone is the most efficient way to treat prescription drug addiction without having to enter into a residential treatment program or go to a maintenance clinic every day. Unfortunately, many drugs have the opposite effect on teenagers as they do in adults. Subutex and Suboxone may help adults to break their addiction to painkillers with little or no withdrawal symptoms, but what effect does it have on teenagers with the same issues?

Suboxone Approved for Drug Addiction Treatment in The European Union
2007-10-31 16:46:00
For once, the United States is ahead of the game when it comes to progressive drug approval. In 2002, the U.S. made a breakthrough decision in allowing buprenorphine to be prescribed for drug addiction treatment from a doctor?s office setting as opposed to confining its use to drug treatment clinics exclusively like methadone. Consequently, Subutex and Suboxone have enjoyed five years of unparalleled success as thousands have taken advantage of the new ruling and recovered from physical addiction to opiate-based prescription medications and street drugs like heroin.

2007-10-30 17:11:00
Maybe he isn?t a complete moron. This year, Georgie W (AKA Leader of the Free World, President George W. Bush ) made a law out of a proposed amendment to the Controlled Substances Act that allows buprenorphine to be prescribed for substance abuse treatment from a doctor?s office setting as opposed to a drug treatment clinic. Doctors may now prescribe bupe to as many as 100 patients instead of 30.

Buprenorphine Offers Hope in the Face of Growing Painkiller Abuse
2007-10-29 17:14:00
Painkiller addiction is the largest rising threat to high schoolers today, medicine cabinets being a lot easier for the average teenager to access than a drug dealer. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, more than 6 million Americans use prescription medication for purposes other than their intended one. That is to say, for recreational purposes or to maintenance an addiction rather than to treat chronic pain. One out of every 10 teenagers says that they have used prescription pain meds for recreational purposes and these little pills are responsible for more overdose deaths than both heroin and cocaine combined.

San Francisco Isn?t Sharing Like It Used To
2007-10-28 20:06:00
I love studies and this study makes me particularly happy, speaking as it does to my home: needle-sharing among drug injectors in San Francisco is down, as is the spread of hepatitis C (HCV) and hepatitis B (HBV).  The September issue of Hepatology said as much in, outlining the results of a study run by ...
