2008-02-06 00:27:00
Whilst I was out at lunch the other day, I got a call from an old friend that I hadn’t spoken to for months. I was outside when he called - it was a windy day. He was telling me all about his new Flickr photo sets when suddenly he stopped talking mid-sentence and asked, “What’s ...

Bob?s house vignettes (ASL videos)
2008-01-30 22:07:00
Pepsi are at it again. Not content with showing a totally silent ad during the Superbowl that features two deaf characters using ASL (with subtitles) - they have produced four other videos that are, frankly, fantastic. I think Pepsi are doing a really great job with this ad campaign - they are showing the deaf ...

Hearing aids suck!
2008-01-26 16:56:00
There’s an article in WIRED magazine by Erin Biba called “Why Things Suck : Hearing Aids ”. The article starts by, quite rightly, stating that hearing aids are too expensive - I couldn’t agree more. It then goes on to talk about directional microphones, inadequate feedback and noise reduction and, finally, the the fact that insurance rarely covers hearing aids. Why Things suck: hearing aid Do you agree that feedback and noise reduction systems aren’t good enough?I don’t have a problem with feedback and I am wearing my Starkey Destinys at almost full volume all the time - the feedback reduction works for me. I don’t use the noise reduction so I’m not sure how good that is. I think the Wired article is overly negative but that’s probably because I’ve have mostly good experiences with my hearing aids over the years and have come to ignore the little problems like occasional excessive background noise and so on. Do you think hear...

2008-01-23 00:38:00

Here’s something you don’t see everyday - an online ear trumpet gallery! The Phisick Antique Medical Collection shows a large range of ear trumpets from the 19th and 20th centuries. Fascinating to see the kind of things people used to help them hear all those years ago. I’m kinda glad technology has moved on a bit since then!

Personal hearing aid software
2007-11-21 00:47:00

This combination of glasses and hearing aids comes from the Delft University of Technology in partnership with Philips.
