$25 million prize to fight global warming
2007-02-15 22:25:01
Friday Sir Richard Branson and Al Gore announced the establishment of a $25 million prize for the development of a technology that fights global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The prize follows in the footsteps of the X Prize, a contest that was won by the SpaceShipOne rocket plane as the first privately developed craft to reach the boundary of outer space. “The Virgin Earth Challenge will award $25 million to the individual or group who are able to demonstrate a commercially viable design which will result in the net removal of anthropogenic, atmospheric greenhouse gases each year for at least ten years without countervailing harmful effects. This removal must have long term effects and contribute materially to the stability of the Earth?s climate,” stated a release from The Virgin Earth Challenge. Branson, a billionaire entrepreneur from Britain, and a panel five judges — Al Gore, Sir Crispin Tickell, Tim Flannery, Jim Hansen and James Lo...

U.S. opts out of climate change panel
2007-02-05 22:17:02
China and India also missing from summit Forty-five nations answered France’s call yesterday for a new environmental body to slow inevitable global warming and protect the planet, perhaps with policing powers to punish violators. Absent were the world’s heavyweight polluter, the United States, and booming nations on the same path as the U.S. - China and India. The charge led by French President Jacques Chirac came a day after the release of an authoritative - and disturbingly grim - scientific report in Paris that said global warming is “very likely” caused by mankind and that climate change will continue for centuries even if heat-trapping gases are reduced. It was the strongest language ever used by the Intergovernmental Pane l on Climate Change , whose last report was issued in 2001. The document, a collaboration of hundreds of scientists and government officials, was approved by 113 nations, including the United States. Despite the report’s dire outlo...

An IPCC primer
2007-01-30 10:13:02
Global warming is going to be a big news story this week as we approach the Friday release of a UN report on climate change. This would be a good time to pause for a review of some of the basics around the story. The report is the product of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC )?an organization made up of thousands of climate change scientists from around the world. The IPCC was formed by the UN nearly twenty years ago and periodically releases a comprehensive report on what is known and not known about climate change. The last came out in 2001 and the report that will officially be released this week in Paris will be their fourth since the panel?s inception. The report undergoes several drafts and line-by-line vetting by hundreds of scientists in what I can only imagine must be an exhaustive and sometimes frustrating process. The final report must be given unanimous approval from all of the 154 countries that are represented on the panel. It is this process which giv...
