Supplementary Nutrition
2008-03-03 01:43:00 By: Sasi KalaAs a lot of antioxidant foods that we consume are from vegetables, people should go in for vegetables that are rich in colour and high in phytonutrients. Excellent choices of vegetables are broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers. The skins of several fruits like grapes, mangoes, straw berries, peaches and vegetables that give the food colour, flavour and scent contain nutrients called phytonutrients. They are simply the best types of antioxidant foods. The supplement recommended for these types of foods is the coq10 that gives you a high antioxidant value.Even though the best sources for antioxidants are fruits and vegetables, they are often produced with the help of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and different types of fertilizers. Therefore it is better to use organically grown vegetables that are high in antioxidants than commercially grown ones. Organically grown vegetables may be costlier but they prove to be very effective in the long run. In today's busy... More About: Nutrition , Antioxidants
Antioxidant Dietary Supplement
2008-03-01 03:15:00 By: Vincent Platania"Antioxidant dietary supplement" is a catch phrase that is bantered about without much clarification. American's are educated in the simple definition of antioxidant: cancer fighter. There is really more to be explained about how these supplements work. Still one thing that isunquestionably true is the high incidence of cancer especially in older people. The American Cancer Society reported that between 1997 through 2001 the rate at which new cases of all types of cancer were diagnosed in the United States was about 470 per 100,000 people. During the same time period there were about 200 cancer deaths per 100,000 people per year. It further reported that 76% of all cancers are diagnosed in persons aged 55 and older. That would suggest that while the cancer rate is high; the death rate from cancer is not as high. With that much cancer in the population it is no wonder that many people have decided on a course of preventative medicine. But what does an antioxidant d... More About: Supplement , Dietary

Vitamin D: One of the Most Potent Antioxidants in the World
2008-02-25 21:41:00 The following paragraph is from the article The Miracle of Vitamin D by Krispin Sullivan who has done a lot of research about vitamin D."Sun exposure at higher latitudes before 10 am or after 2 pm will cause burning from UV-A before it will supply adequate vitamin D from UV-B. This finding may surprise you, as it did the researchers. It means that sunning must occur between the hours we have been told to avoid. Only sunning between 10 am and 2 pm during summer months (or winter months insouthern latitudes) for 20-120 minutes, depending on skin type and color, willform adequate vitamin D before burning occurs. Tea: Varieties And Grades Of Green Tea
2008-02-23 19:30:00 By: Marcus StoutIf you?ve ever shopped for green tea, no doubt you?re aware that there are avast number of choices. There are green teas from many regions of the world, andmany varieties, grades and flavors from each region.Green tea was likely the first kind of tea. About 3000 years ago in China, people plucked fresh tea leaves and let them dry in the sun before storing them.In the 8th century, tea processors began using the evaporation process, and bythe 12th century, they began sautéing the leaves. Basically, green tea cameabout before tea processors learned the methods associated with processing blacktea.Even today, green tea is one of the teas left in its most natural state.Unlike black tea, green tea is unfermented. This lack of fermentation leaves thechlorophyll in the leaves, so that they retain their green color. Green tea alsoretains more of its natural anti-oxidants as a result of being unfermented. Thismakes green tea a far healthier choice than black tea.The natural anti... More About: Grades , Green Tea
How Are Antioxidants Linked To Anti-Aging?
2008-02-22 19:06:00 By: Carina MacInnesAnti oxidants have been widely praised in the media. Many know they are linkedwith anti-aging properties. However this is not new, it all began with one man?stheory a half a century ago about how free radicals were associated with aging, and science has been trying to catch up with it ever since. As Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D., states in his 2001 book, ?The Wrinkle Cure?:?When it comes to aging, it?s not Father Time that?s public enemy number 1. It?sthe very busy, very nasty little molecule called the free radical.?The Free Radical Theory of Aging was published by Denman Harman in 1956. Hetheorized that aging is a result of free radical damage of the cells of thebody. This is also called oxidative stress.Today, a great deal of experimental evidence supports the premise that lengthof life is determined by the crucial balance of antioxidants with free radicalsin the body. Oxidative stress is being shown to be at the root of disease andaging. One example is that the lif... More About: Antioxidants

Adult Acne Care, Skin Care Is Not Skin Deep
2008-02-16 19:07:00 By: Kathleen Steadwater The saying "beauty is only skin-deep" cannot be truer than in regards to adult acne. Studies have proven that topical acne creams and cleansers are simply not enough to stop acne in its tracks. Recent studies claim that what you put into your body may be more important than what you put on your skin. It can't be denied that acne skin care treatments can help acne, but the majority of acne products are topical, meaning that they go on the surface of your skin. So, it's not far fetched to think that these products simply treat the symptom of something greater that's going on inside your body. With a few easy changes to your lifestyle, you can get to the root of your adult acne problem and maybe even find a cure. This may sound like a big task to take on, but all it really involves is taking control of your personal habits. Here's how: 1. 5 Ways to Speed Your Metabolism
2008-02-16 11:33:00 By: Lisa Buldo The key to speeding your metabolism is to re-ignite the furnace inside of you. The key is eating and exercising. You will never jump start your metabolism by not eating. Eating is absolutely key! Isn't that good to know? You must adapt a healthy way of eating before you begin to exercise, especially if you have been sedentary for a while. You hear stories of people who go out to shovel snow, and have a heart attack on the spot. Many times it's because they weren't used to exercising the heart that hard, and the heart couldn't take it. For this reason, I believe it is important to get the nutrition down first. For speeding the metabolism, you need to do a few things: 1. Eat some protein at each meal to keep the body in calorie burning mode and your glycemic index as low as possible. 2. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily. It will help you detoxify daily. 3. Eat at least 2 large servings of dark leafy greens daily. (Preferably with lunch and supp... Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Antioxidants-A New Improved Source
2008-02-15 18:57:00 By: George Shears As a result of the ongoing wellness revolution, more and more people are learning that they need to add high quality nutritional supplements to their diet in order to help prevent and reverse a wide array of chronic degenerative diseases. The basic reason for this is very simple--we are genetically programmed to eat only the simple, whole foods that were consumed by our stone-age ancestors. To whatever degree we deviate from this kind of diet, we deprive our bodies of key necessary nutrients and ingest substances that actually cause them harm.Tragically, about 90% of the average American diet now consists of mummified foods that are lacking in the key nutrients we need; even worse, they commonly contain a wide array of ingredients that are either downright toxic or that seriously disrupt the functioning of our bodies in many ways. And even the natural produce we eat--unless it is organic and vine-ripened--is likely to be deficient in many key micro... More About: Source , Acids , Fatty , Omega , Antioxidants
Natural Skin Care Enhanced Inside and Out with Grape Seed Extract
2008-02-13 20:18:00 By: Gloria MacTaggart Until just a few years ago, Vitamins C, E and Betacarotene were known to be the most powerful antioxidants on the market. However, a new product has taken their place - the grape seed. Although especially effective for dry skin, grape seed extract will benefit any skin type and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Products containing grape seed oil and extract may replace many of your current skin care remedies and give you a chance to switch to natural skin care. Research on the grape seed began when scientists decided to investigate the reason behind the lower incidence of heart disease in France. The country's traditional diet of rich foods and other lifestyle factors certainly did not align with what they knew to be heart-healthy requirements. Their research isolated the antioxidant content in red wine as the beneficial element and soon doctors all over the world began recommending a daily glass of red wine for cardiovascular health. Turmeric Extract, The Next Miracle Antioxidant? Or Is Curcumin All It's Hyp
2008-02-11 18:07:00 By: Samantha Rangen The turmeric root has been used traditionally in Ayervedic medicine and other Eastern folk remedies. Due to differences in certain diseases between Indian and Western populations, interest was raised in the scientific and medical communities regarding the possible pharmacological activity of turmeric. Turmeric is the yellow spice used to color curry powder. Many ethnic groups the world round use it for adding color to cooked or pickled foods. When turmeric was examined in a laboratory, it was found that the active components were certain chemical compounds, known as curcuminoids. The major curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. They are commonly referred to generally as curcumin, and are available commercially now as purified extracts of the turmeric root. In the scientific literature there is a good deal of evidence for the antioxidant activity of curcumin. Curcumin has been shown in research to powerfully scavenge fre... Antioxidants and Brain Health
2008-02-06 18:23:00 by: Dr. Paul Gross Your brain is your greatest asset but it is also your body?s most vulnerable organ. It requires constant support from other major organs and is your most susceptible organ to oxidative stress during aging. Here are some brain facts: 1. Your brain makes up only 2% of your total body weight but requires 20% of your heart?s output of blood to sustain the amount of oxygen that it needs. 2. Your brain is the most oxygen-demanding organ in your body. 3. Your brain uses chemicals (neurotransmitters) to relay important messages to other parts of your body. These same chemicals are also involved in chemical reactions that produce damaging free radicals. 4. If your brain cells become weak or die they cannot repair themselves. Their functions then can be permanently lost if cell death or damage occurs. Given these susceptibilities, your brain is especially vulnerable to conditions that threaten oxygen supply, such as in head injury, stroke, lung diseases and heart fa... Antioxidants in Green Tea
2008-02-05 19:09:00 by: Linda Brown Oxygen isn't harmful to your body, is it? Oxygen is an essential element that all members of the animal kingdom need. Oxygen is that element that triggers the body to burn glucose and fat to provide heat and energy. But as essential as oxygen is, it does have its negative effects. During the process of oxidation, highly reactive byproducts called free radicals are produced. These free radicals act on other molecules, turning them into free radicals like themselves and disrupting their normal functioning. This eventually leads to massive cell destruction, tissue damage, and can even cause degenerative diseases like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis. Fortunately, the human body comes equipped to use antioxidants as a natural defense against these harmful free radicals. Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemical substances found in fruits and vegetables. They act on free radicals by ... More About: Green , Green Tea

Nutrition for Endurance Athletes Should Include Antioxidants
2008-01-31 15:53:00 by: Dr. Keith Scott Although adhering to a well structured training regime is the best way for athletes to achieve good results they need to look to their diets and dietary supplements to maintain good health and to improve post-event recovery. There are many different categories of supplements but perhaps the most important, and misunderstood, of these are the antioxidants. Numerous types of antioxidants occur; some are produced by our bodies while others are derived from the diet. Free radical-induced oxidative stress is an inevitable consequence of prolonged exercise and results in tissue damage, excessive fatigue, delayed recovery and overtraining. Endurance athletes need to ensure that they have an adequate intake of a wide variety of effective plant-based antioxidants.Free radicals (including reactive oxygen species) are unstable molecules that can cause damage to DNA, cell walls and other structures. Can Antioxidants Help You Build Muscle? Effects of Free Radicals On Your Mu
2008-01-28 19:13:00 by: Chris Chew Many people these days take antioxidants to counter the detrimental effect of free radicals. Antioxidants mopped up free radicals and convert them into harmless substances. Free radicals are known to cause body cell decomposition and therefore are the main culprit in our aging process. Free radicals are linked to aging diseases such as cancer and heart problems besides making us age more quickly. Since free radicals cause our cells to decompose, then free radicals will also degenerate our muscle cells.Staying clear of situations that cause a surge of free radicals to surge is one way of prevention and taking antioxidants as a supplementation is another. There are many situations that will increase free radical activities such as sun burn, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, pollution, exercise workout amongst others. How to Avoid Wrinkles and Look Younger
2008-01-24 19:43:00 by: Valerian D.A recent study conducted at the Berlin Charite hospital concluded that people having a high concentration of antioxidants in their skin have fewer wrinkles and look younger.Antioxidants are compounds that act as killers of free radicals mopping up these unstable oxygen molecules that, in excess, can destroy the basic cells' structure and their genetic material (DNA) as well. Among the main antioxidants for the skin we can mention vitamins C and E, and coenzyme Q10.Our body cannot produce all requested antioxidants on its own. It must to make up the rest of amount using ingredients such as beta-carotene as well as Vitamins A, C, D and E. The study confirmed that non-vegetarians had less antioxidants in their bodies than vegetarians. Mario's Antioxidant Needs
2008-01-12 21:15:00 To illustrate the antioxidant needs of a person, let's examine how Mario(a fictitious character) spends his week. Only the antioxidant requirements arising from his physical activities will be illustrated. Other antioxidant needs caused by other free radical generators like smoking and toxins will be omitted. Mario's antioxidant levels on a weekday The alarm clock rings and Mario wakes up. It's a Monday and it's time to go to work. He stretches and pulls himself up and starts his weekday.. Every time he uses his muscles, he spends energy. He gets this energy from ATP(Adenosine Triphosphate) produced mainly by the mitochondria of his cells(aerobic metabolism or respiration). The mitochondria processes food and oxygen to produce ATP and free radicals are natural by-products of this process. If antioxidants were not around to neutralize these free radicals escaping the ATP production, substances within the cell including the mitochondria and DNA could be damaged be... How Much Daily Antioxidants Does Our Body Need?
2008-01-02 21:32:00 As many as 10,000 DNA lesions occur in every cell in our body each day. The major cause are the free radical chain reactions which antioxidants are meant to stop. This figure accounts for the normal daily activity which our body are used to. Deviations from these 'normal' activities such as heavy physical exertion, long exposure to sunlight, etc. can produce more oxidative hits to our DNA. Free radicals are by products of our own cell's process for converting food into energy. Our cell's energy manufacturing plant, the mitochondria, processes food by a series of electron exchange with oxygen as the final electron acceptor. Along the way, atoms or molecules with unpaired electrons (free radicals) escape the process. These free radicals will try to stabilize itself by stealing an electron from a nearby molecule which is the onset of the free radical chain reaction. DNA which are inside the cell are exposed to these free radical chain reaction. Natural antioxidant defen... More About: Daily , Body , Antioxidants
ORAC Values of Acai Berry, Goji Berry, Pomegranate and Mangosteen
2007-12-28 21:09:00 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is a measure of how well antioxidants absorb free radicals. Superfruits such as the Acai berry, Goji Berry , Pomegranate and Mangosteen has quite high ORAC values. The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) ARS (Agricultural Research Service) in their 2007 ORAC values for selected foods has not provided data for these superfruits aside from pomegranate juice which scores 2,341. To achieve optimum health, USDA recommends an intake of 5,000 ORAC units per day. Daily food consumption for an average person attains only about 20% to 30% of this recommendation. This means a lot more of foods with good ORAC scores like fruits and vegetables must be included in one's daily food intake. Approximate ORAC scores taken other research institutions like Tufts University and manufacturers of superfruits has come up with the following data: Superfruit- 1 gram ORAC Value Acai Berry 3,800 Pomegranate 105 Goji Berry 253 Mangosteen >...
