Free Radicals are Both Beneficial and Harmful for the Body
2007-12-21 15:39:00 Our body has some beneficial uses for free radicals. They are atoms or molecules which are highly reactive because of an unpaired electron. They tend to balance themselves by stealing electrons from nearby atoms or molecules. Once they are balanced, the atom or molecule whose atom was stolen now becomes a free radical and just like the 'stealer', it will balance itself...and it goes on and on until an antioxidant quenches or scavenges the free radical by donating an electron without becoming reactive. That's the property of an antioxidant, it can donate an electron and not become unstable. There are instances when our body intentionally produces free radicals. How our body uses free radicals Our body's response to foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses is to mark them as 'foreign' which is done by the antibodies and then have them terminated by killer cells(leukocytes). One way for the killer cells to kill the foreign invaders is to encapsulate them and produce... More About: Body , Free , The Body

Punicalagin Antioxidants in Pomegranate
2007-12-07 19:32:00 Antioxidants in Pomegranate Punicalagins, a tannin, are the major antioxidant components of pomegranate. Other antioxidant present in the pomegranate fruit are anthocyanins(responsible for the color both inside and outside of the fruit), ellagitannins, and hydrolyzed tannins. This is how the fruit became popular and has come to be one of the so called superfuits or superfoods. The fruit is about 2.5" to 5" in diameter, roundish, and is riddled with many seeds inside. The flesh covering the seeds are edible. The color is green outside when raw but turns to a bright attractive red when fully ripe. The taste is semi sweet and semi sour. Because of its antioxidant power, many manufacturers have produced juices, extracts and other health beneficial products from this fruit. Many studies have been done in testing the antioxidant capacity of punicalagins and anthocyanin together with other antioxidants found in pomegranate. How To Absorb More Antioxidants From Green Tea
2007-11-15 16:44:00 More than 80% of the antioxidant catechins are lost after green tea is digested in the body. A study was conducted in comparing the catechin levels, in a simulated digestion, when green tea is combined with other beverages. Lemon juice ranked the highest causing only about 20% to be lost after digestion. Vitamin C also produced a good result. The popular scene of an iced tea with a slice of lemon at the top of the glass is not just for presentation after all. It makes the antioxidants in green tea more absorbable by the body. If you don't like the taste of green tea, mix it with fruit juices preferably lemon so you can enjoy the taste and at the same time get more antioxidant benefits. source:Purdue University (2007, November 14). What Are the Ingredients in Green Tea?
2007-11-13 14:50:00 In the past decade, green tea has become an increasingly popular choice of beverage for a number of reasons. Known to help people lose weight while also fighting off things such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and bad cholesterol, green tea has become a part of people?s lives who are interested in being healthy. Interestingly, most people are completely unaware of the ingredients in green tea, which we wanted to cover in this article. With more than 3,000 different types of tea, it is fascinating to find that green tea is among the top choice. Grown on the Camellia sinensis bush, the leaves actually produce three distinct tea types depending on how they are processed. For instance, unfermented leaves produce green tea, semi-fermented leaves produce oolong tea, and fully fermented leaves from this same plant produce black tea. For green tea, the leaves must be dried quickly, which is typically done in Chinese form by pan firing or steaming, which maintains the beautiful... Ripe Fruit Has More Antioxidants Than Raw Fruit
2007-11-12 16:16:00 Raw fruits contain a lot of antioxidants: bioflavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin A, etc. For most fruits, the color is green when raw like apples, pears, mango, etc.. Some fruits can be eaten even though they are not yet ripe like mangoes and guavas. Chlorophyll is what makes the color of raw fruit green. When the fruit ripens, it turns into some other color and chlorophyll seems to disappear. It is transformed into what they call nonfluorescing chlorophyll catabolytes (NCC) which is a highly active antioxidant. It can be found in the peel and in the flesh nearest the peel Therefore to get the most antioxidant power from fruits, it would be wise to eat the peel of some fruits like apples, pears and guavas. For mangoes and other fruits whose peel cannot be eaten, you can scrape the insides of the peel to get the flesh stuck in it for it contains a lot of antioxidants including NCCs. source:John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The Green Tea Secret
2007-11-10 15:10:00 by Kristy HaugenThe chemical compound known as a phenol is characterized by an aromatic benzene ring with a hydroxyl group (OH) attached. This makes sense that poly-phenols refer to a chemical substance with more than one phenol group. Phenols function as potent antioxidants, reacting with free radicals. Phenols are responsible for the bright coloring in many fruits and vegetables. These fruit and vegetable phenols protect the plants from damage by disease and ultraviolet light.Polyphenols are phytonutrients or phytochemicals. Phytonutrients are biologically active compounds in food. However, these phytonutrients are not classified as essential nutrients. This is because the body does not depend on these nutrients for proper bodily function. Phytonutrients do play a vital role in affecting our health just as significantly as vitamins and minerals do.Polyphenols are classified as flavonoids, which is a class of phytonutrient. Polyphenols can form complexes with metal cations such as ... More About: Green , Secret , Green Tea , The G
Antioxidants in Green Tea and Black Tea
2007-11-09 17:02:00 Antioxidants in green tea are higher compared to black tea because of the processing method. The article below shows you why green tea has more antioxidants(catechins) than black tea. Catechins in Green and Black Tea By Brigita Feltham Although both green and black tea come from the camellia sinensis plant, the quantity and kinds of catechins found in green and black tea vary due to their different processing methods. How are green and black tea processed? When green tea is processed the leaves are immediately steamed after picking, this halts the oxidation of the leaves, which means a high concentration of catechins is retained in the leaves. When black tea is processed the leaves are first withered. The leaves are dried in the open air or air is pumped through the layers of leaves. The leaves are left to oxidise for an extended period and this causes the leaves to change colour from green t... More About: Green Tea , Antioxidants

Caffeine and Meditation
2007-10-26 17:11:00 Caffeine and meditation have one thing in common - it gives you a 'lift' or boost your energy. Caffeine gives us a boost by the effects it has on our nervous system. Meditation on the other hand does it by relaxing our mind and body - no chemicals required, just putting our mind into a relaxed state and the body follows. Our normal energy levels After a night's sleep, our energy is renewed and diminishes as time passes as you can see in the illustration below. This is not an accurate representation of how our energy are depleted. It does not diminish uniformly as the illustration suggests. Several factors like excitement, anger or strong emotions can elevate the energy level any time of the day. Caffeine boost Caffeine molecules are similar to adenosine and it easily occupies the receptors of cells which adenosine should occupy when our bodies need rest to signal it to slow down. When caffeine is in the blood, it easily attaches to these receptor cells. Now when our ... More About: Caff
Meditation Can Give You a Lift
2007-10-25 15:28:00 You wake up early in the morning to get ready for work, school or for whatever schedule you have for the day. You feel sluggish of course but several minutes after drinking that morning cup of coffee or tea, you feel a 'lift' and you are ready to start your day headstrong. Several hours later, you may feel tired but you need to work so you drink another cup to give you a lift to keep you going, and it does. That's what most people drink coffee or tea for, to get a 'lift'. Indeed coffee and tea gives you that heightened energy and wakefulness - caffeine is mostly responsible for that. Coffee and tea contains other ingredients that can benefit the body like antioxidants but caffeine is mostly responsible for giving us that 'up' or 'lift' feeling. EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), a catechin which possess several times antioxidant power than vitamin c and e, is a major ingredient of tea. Aside from its antioxidant capacity, it can also prevent bacteria and viruses f... More About: Meditation , Give , Lift
Calming Effect of Theanine in Tea
2007-10-13 19:31:00 Theanine is an amino acid which is present in tea plant (camellia sinensis). It cannot be found in any other plant except for one non edible mushroom. Green tea, black tea and oolong tea contains theanine. Promotes alpha brain wave activity Theanine is readily absorbed by the intestines and because it can cross the blood-brain barrier, it enters the brain and affects the neurotransmitters. The alpha brain wave activity, which can be measured at the back to the top of the head, increases at approximately 20 minutes after ingesting tea. A person is in a relaxed and calm state of mind when the brain is in this alpha state. The mind also becomes more alert, not drowsy as you may associate with a calm state. This state can last for up to four hours. Brain waves The frequency of our brain waves depends on our waking or sleeping state. From the deep sleep of 0.5Hz(cycles per second) to around 14Hz when fully awake. The following is a summary of our brain wave activities: Beta wav... More About: Effect , Thea

Adrenal Fatigue Caused by Caffeine
2007-09-29 22:29:00 What is adrenal fatigue? Simply put, it is the condition wherein your adrenal glands gets 'overworked' that it functions far below than normal when our body needs its 'services'. Stressful situations can trigger the adrenal glands to release adrenaline(epinephrine) and stress hormones. Normally, the adrenal glands releases hormones which are necessary to meet the challenges of demanding situations. These hormones make your senses sharper than normal, increases your blood pressure, increases your heart rate, increases glucose levels in the blood, release your body's stored energy for use at the specific situation and boost your physical and mental energy. I have heard of a person who carried a heavy object, which would normally require 2 to 3 people, during a fire alarm. When the fire threat was over, it was impossible for him to carry that same object! That's an example of adrenal glands at work. Nature had designed it to last for a short period of time only. To... Caffeine Intake and Pregnancy
2007-09-18 19:58:00 Coffee and tea are good sources of antioxidants but they are also a source of caffeine. Tea however has a much lower caffeine content than coffee but the latter is more popular. Do you know that coffee is the most popular drink in the world? - two billions cups are drunk every day. Even pregnant women drink coffee. Experts agree that less than 300mg. of caffeine can be safe for pregnant women - that's 2 to 4 cups of coffee. More than that amount can be hazardous for the baby and some researchers associate it with birth defects and miscarriages to name some ill effects. Other studies however found no association with these maladies. The popularity of coffee rose because of the 'energy lift' it gives. Can Caffeine Make Your Heart Stop?
2007-09-09 20:35:00 Maybe there's a possibility if taken too much in a short period of time. How much is too much? Experts say that 250mg of caffeine in a day may give symptoms of overdose - irregular heart beat, dizziness, restlessness, anxiety, ringing in the ear, difficulty breathing, etc. That would be more than 3 cups of coffee or more than 8 cups of tea, depending on the type. Here's a case of a motorcycle rider who drank 640 mg. of caffeine in a span of just 5 hours. He consumed this amount contained contained in 8 cans of Red Bull to give him the edge on the competition. Red Bull warns against taking more than 2 cans per day but Matthew Penbross did not heed the warning. How Long Does Caffeine Stay in Your Body?
2007-09-06 19:15:00 As long as caffeine is in your blood, it's effects will also manifest. The time it takes for the body to eliminate one half of a caffeine dose is normally between 3 to 12 hours. It is called the half-life of caffeine. Several factors can shorten or lengthen the half life of caffeine. Smoking, medications and diseases are some factors. Pregnant women have higher caffeine half-life, 18 to 20 hours - pretty much longer for the fetus since its organs are not yet fully formed to be able to eliminate caffeine easily. About 99% of the elimination process takes place in the liver. The effects of caffeine can begin as soon as you swallow your caffeinated beverage or food. It easily enters the bloodstream through the stomach and the intestines. Noticeable effects can be experienced 15 minutes after ingesting and peaking at around 30 - 60 minutes. If you regularly drink a cup of coffee or tea in the morning and another in the evening, you can expect to have caffeine in your blood ev... More About: Body , Long , Stay , Caff
Decaffeinated Tea
2007-09-05 19:31:00 Decaffeinated teas are commercially available. However, the process involves chemicals which may leave traces after the processing. How are coffee, tea and colas decaffeinated? The process of decaffeinating tea using chemicals not only removes the caffeine content but also some of the health promoting nutrients and polyphenols found in the tea leaves. There is an alternate way of making a decaffeinated tea right in your home. How about that? A caffeine free tea which you prepare yourself.
