Cold Tea Drinks
2008-05-07 18:56:00
Cold drink manufacturers are quick to grab the market for the antioxidant revolution. Many health benefits for antioxidants are being published and the public is getting aware of what good antioxidants can do to our health. Green tea cold drinks flavored with fruit juices are common these days. They are widely available and are easy to find in the grocery shelves. Popular flavors are apple and lemon but other flavors are also available such as strawberry, peach and even pomegranate. EGCG(epigallocatechin gallate) is a major component of green tea and has a multitude of antioxidant benefits. However, only a small amount is absorbed by our body but combining it with citrus juices can multiply the amount absorbed many times. See my earlier post: How To Absorb More Antioxidants From Green Tea. Having this in mind, lemon flavored green tea cold drinks may be the best choice if you want more antioxidants absorbed by your body. Antioxidants and Health

Last month, the Dairy Farmers of America(DFA) announced new antioxidant laden cheese products by Borden Essentials. Other important ingredients of cheese are calcium, zinc, phosphorus vitamins B2 and vitamins B12. The added antioxidants brings cheese to a new level of nutrition. How Our Body Benefits From Antioxidants Every second we are exposed to oxidative stress caused by free radicals from our environment. Pollutions, toxins in food, irregular exercise and most importantly our own metabolic processes. Introducing antioxidants into our bodies help in neutralizing these free radicals and strengthen our immune system as well. Who Can Benefit From Cheese With Antioxidants? I love cheese and so are other millions of people. More than 9 billion pounds of cheese are manufactured yearly in the United States. That would mean that a large portion of Americans eat this delightful food. With this new product by Borden Essentials, cheese lovers can enjoy eating this food with the ...
Antioxidants and Heart Disease in Women - The Real Truth
2008-04-21 23:48:00
By Mark SchaussAs I have pointed out in the past, the media seems to love to distort the truth about the benefits of nutritional supplements. The media recently jumped on one of the worst studies on antioxidants done to date. Their claim, which was reported in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine was that women gained no benefit from the supplementation of antioxidants like vitamin C and E. Turns out, that was a clear distortion of the findings of the study. In a blog I did last week I showed that the researchers did not look at the lifestyles of the study subjects which distorts the data. Today, I found out more dishonesty about the study which sickened me. Turns out that they included the data on the benefits of antioxidants from women who DID NOT TAKE the supplements. They showed no benefits to supplementation of vitamins C and E. NO KIDDING! How can any self-respecting journal publish something like that? Back to the study. What was revealed yet not reported by t...

Antioxidants Increase Sexual Pleasure
2008-04-21 21:39:00
By Chris RobertsonWe often read or hear news reports about antioxidants and how they can improve our health, yet we rarely hear about the role they play in the pleasure we obtain from sex and intimacy. To understand antioxidants and the ways they can enhance genital health, we first need to understand the role that free radicals play in damaging our cells. In essence, free radicals are the toxic byproducts of our metabolism. Free radical production can increase as a result of the foods we eat (as is the case with charbroiled meat) or the air we breathe (as is the case with second hand smoke).Using several enzyme-based systems, our body does its best to combat free radicals. When our body's defenses fail, though, free radicals cause individual cells to become damaged or die. If left unchecked, free radicals cause tissue damage, premature aging, and loss of cellular function. In other words, our cells become oxidized, much in the same way that rust forms on iron when it is ...

The What and Why Of Antioxidants
2008-04-19 22:20:00
By Brenda HoffmanMore than likely you have heard the term "antioxidant" by now. However, do you know what it is, why you need it or how you get it? Probably not. So, herein what you need to know about antioxidants will be explained. The first thing that you need to know about in order to understand antioxidants is the process of oxidation. This is a fundamental and necessary biomechanical reaction. Not all forms of this process are helpful though. There are some that forms that happen at the wrong time and are thus disastrous to your health. However, antioxidants can be a big help in helping positive oxidation to occur so that you will have sustained, good health. Antioxidants also play a key role in keeping the proteins in your cell membranes from being damaged. These proteins are large, complex and specialized molecules. They control the functions of important cell membranes, which are the basic defense system that lets nutrients in, sends waste products out and preven...
The New Science of Antioxidant Synergy
2008-04-19 19:37:00
By Dave Saunders Since the initial discovery of antioxidants, science continues to move forward with new developments and new understanding into how these important molecules work to protect the body from oxidative stress and even prevent the progression of certain disease processes. New scientific developments also show that different antioxidants can actually positively synergize with each other or in some cases cancel each other out. Laboratory methods of measuring these synergies have become the buzz in the research world and amongst informed authors as the only viable method of comparing apples to apples, or at least antioxidants to antioxidants. Effective laboratory tests are also essential in the study of antioxidants as well as antioxidant supplements because many manufacturing practices expose antioxidants to heat and oxygen and thus render them useless in the final product. The first laboratory tests to measure the potential of an antioxidant was developed in 1...

Peanuts Aren't Just Snackfood- They Boost Antioxidants!
2008-04-19 00:15:00
By Timothy Moore When you think of getting high amounts of antioxidants, you may think of eating pomegranates, blueberries, blackberries or strawberries, but a new study found that having a handful of peanuts can give you an antioxidant boost. A team of researchers at the University of Florida tested a dozen different selections of peanuts and found that not only are peanuts rich in protein and monounsaturated fats (good fats), but they also contain as many antioxidants as strawberries, and are higher in antioxidants than apples, beets and carrots. Pomegranate remains the highest antioxidant fruit. Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals in plant food that protect the body against free radicals, which can cause heart disease and cancer. Peanuts are high in polyphenol antioxidants, which help to combat oxidative stress and are particularly high in a certain type of polyphenol, called p-Coumaric acid. P-Coumaric acid is a crystalline solid that can be found in a wide...

Antioxidants And Cancer Prevention - Fact Sheet
2008-04-17 03:13:00
By John Corbin Just what are antioxidants and can they do anything to help prevent or fight cancer? Information from the National Cancer Institute describe antioxidants as substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A, and other substances. Can antioxidants prevent cancer? Considerable laboratory evidence indicates that antioxidants may slow or even prevent the development of cancer. However, information from recent clinical trials is less that clear. Five large-scale clinical trials published in the 1990s reached differing conclusions about the effect of antioxidants on cancer. The studies examined the effect of antioxidants on cancer in different groups. A study published in 199...

Understanding Acai’s Antioxidants
2008-04-15 10:12:00
By: Carl Cruz Here’s a quote I hear a lot from new Acai fans: “Acai has the richest Antioxidant of any food in the world.”Yes, you can truthfully say that, it is a quote by Dr. Strauss, who was the first person to run an ORAC evaluation on Acai berries. However, do people really understand what this means? It’s not really referring to the ORAC score at all, but the high number of Antioxidant Compounds in Acai, which to me is far more impressive. Most people simply think that relative to other fruits, an Acai berry ranks somewhere around 1,027, while a blueberry, for instance, ranks about 92. Over ten times as much.Although those are the ORAC designations for fresh Acai and fresh low bush blueberries, this is way too simplistic of a way to think about antioxidants, and frankly some poor eating decisions are likely to be made if you continue to see it that simplistically.First of all, the 1,027 is a number that represents micromoles (atomic measurements) of Trolox Equiva...

Spices - Mediterranean Diet's Key To Good Health
2008-04-10 22:18:00
By Dr Keith ScottOver the past decade much has been made of the so-called Mediterranean Diet. Epidemiological evidence shows that people living in Mediterranean countries like France, Greece and Italy have lower incidences of heart disease relative to the USA, UK and more northerly European nations. Various hypotheses have been put forward in an attempt to explain why their diets should afford protection against cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions. Two factors that have been given credit for the healthy attributes of this diet are red wine and olive oil. However, until recently one of the most important factors has been overlooked – the consumption in this region of considerable quantities of culinary herbs and spices that are all rich in antioxidants and other important disease-preventing compounds. The people of the Mediterranean countries, when following their traditional diets, tend to eat less animal-derived saturated fats and more plant-based unsaturated ...

Antioxidants and Anti Aging Wrinkle Cream
2008-04-05 20:47:00
Skin wrinkles are products of natural aging. How fast you develop wrinkles depend on many factors such as exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, lack of vitamins, lack of antioxidants, etc. Oxidative damage due to free radical chain reactions occur in our skin every second. antioxidants help prevent the damage by neutralizing or quenching the free radicals. Damages done to the skin accumulate through the years until wrinkles become noticeable. The time it takes for wrinkles to appear may be later for persons whose skin are less subjected to oxidative damage. But persons whose skin are constantly exposed to oxidative damage like being exposed to thesun always, may have wrinkles appear earlier in life.Having a diet rich in antioxidants can greatly help in extending the time wrinkles appear. But when wrinkles begins to show, fret not, there are anti aging wrinkle creams in the market to restore the elasticity of collagen and elastin extending your youthfulness even more. The following...

The Importance Of An Antioxidant Rich Diet
2008-03-26 01:47:00
By: Angelo JohnsonUnderstanding the relationship between antioxidants and free radicals is very important for your body?s overall well-being. Antioxidant s are simply molecules that slow down or preventthe deterioration and damage of cells in the body. A low level of antioxidants in your body can cause oxidative stress and may damage or even kill off cells. Many diseases and illnesses, such as cancer, stroke, heart disease and even vision loss, are believed to be directly effected by the level of oxidative stress in a person's body. Therefore, antioxidants are important because they help to neutralize the free radicals in your body to prevent the oxidation of cells. A diet high in antioxidants can not only help combat illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, it can also help prevent infection and to slow the aging process. As a person ages, his or her cells take more and more time to longer to replenish themselves. They also become damaged over time. Antioxidants can prevent the ...

A New Antioxidant Fat-Burner for Overweight Diabetics?
2008-03-20 08:39:00
By: Robert Rister The natural products market in North America is saturated with products that claim to boost the metabolism to take off the pounds. You can find a hydroxycut caffeine-free fat burner, a liquidgel green tea product, and a variety of supplements that claim to correct "glucose intolerance" (the mainstream term is "insulin resistance") specifically to help diabetics lose weight. A research study published just in February 2008, however, suggests that a combination of two safe and inexpensive supplements may:*Enlarge and activate the mitochondria ("energy machinery") inside adipose tissue to oxidize lipids*Activate insulin to transport glucose and fatty acids out of the bloodstream to fat cells with these activated mitochondria and*Do all this without accelerating the heart rate or interfering with the action of thyroid ormones. These two supplements are lipoic acid and L-carnitine.Alpha-lipoic acid, or ALA as it's commonly called, counteracts the glycation, or "carameli...

2008-03-19 20:04:00
By: Darrell MillerAlthough seventy years ago the average life expectancy was age 62, today people are not only living well into their 80s and 90s, but they are also living better too. Doing activities such as mountain biking, kayaking, jogging, hiking, gardening, and golfing, it seems as if everyone is on the go, no matter what their age. Since nobody wants to spend retirement in a doctor’s office, it is important to start planning for a longer, more vibrant life. Huge advances are made each day in the understanding of how men and women age that help to improve our chances of living long, healthy lives. Some of the most impressive findings have shown that nutritional supplements can help, mainly specially formulated papaya preparation, which is able to fight two of the primary reasons we get old, oxidative stress and immune system decline.Papaya , a tangy tasting fruit, is now appearing more and more in the produce departments of most grocery stores. A papaya has a bright orange fl...

Why Antioxidants are Important for Hepatitis C Patients
2008-03-19 15:37:00
By: Nicole Cutler, L.Ac.For anyone living with Hepatitis C, supporting your liver in every way possible with the intent to slow the progression of the disease is vital. A healthy diet rich in antioxidants is one easy and effective way you can achieve this goal.A byproduct of the cellular oxidation witnessed when a substance is broken down, free radicals are atoms with an unpaired electron. This creates a chemical instability capable of damaging the walls of cells as well the genetic materials contained within them. Antioxidants combat this process by reducing the damage caused by free radicals.Studies have shown that oxidation plays a large role in the advancement of liver disease, Alternately, various studies showed the far-ranging benefits of antioxidants, making them vitally important to halting the progression of liver disease. From reducing inflammation of the liver aswell as the oxidative stress of Hepatitis C to slowing the progression of cirrhosis, antioxidants have proven t...

Antioxidants May Prevent Bone Loss: Texas Sees New Treatments For Osteoporo
2008-03-18 15:04:00
By: Pat Carpenter New research suggests that taking antioxidants may prevent bone loss in menopausal women, one of the primary health concerns associated with this condition.Every year, 500,000 American women suffer at least one fracture of the vertebrae, and 300,000 sustain hip fractures. Fractures related to osteoporosis, or the thinning and weakening of bones, amounts to $10 billion every year in national health care costs, and approximately $977 million in Texas alone. In fact, 1.9 million Texans suffer from osteoporosis or bone loss at any given moment -- and they're not all menopausal women. That means in every city and small town -- from Dallas, to Houston, to Austin, to the Eastern plains -- someone is significantly affected by weakening bones. The repercussions this has for not only the personal health of these individuals and their families, but also on the health insurance and health care industries, are huge. The past ten years of study have indicated that prevention ear...

Alpha Lipoic Acid Is A Powerful Antioxidant
2008-03-17 01:22:00
By: Darrell Miller The discovery of alpha lipoic acid at the University Of Texas Chemistry Department in 1951 was not heralded with trumpets of joy at the revelation of such a powerful antioxidant, but was instead largely ignored. This is largely due to the biochemistry involved not being fully understood at that time, but by the 1980s it was a commonly used supplement, recommended for several medical conditions.Chemically, the substance is a 5-membered cyclic disulphide with a carboxylic acid grouping. Biochemically, it?s extremely powerful antioxidant properties are largely due to the fact that it one of those rare active molecules that are soluble in both water and fats, and in fact is the only such antioxidant currently know. One of the properties that this ability enables it to possess is to cross the blood-brain barrier, and apply antioxidant propertied to the brain.Antioxidant s are essential to human life in that they destroy free radicals. These are compounds with free unpai...

By: Mitamins Team Lupus disease, like any autoimmune disease, is an extremely difficult condition to treat. How can you fight against something causing you immense discomfort when that something is your own body? Because of this, lupus treatment is often restricted to controlling the signs and symptoms of lupus while the cause of the disease is found. In 90% of cases the cause is never found, meaning a long course of medication for many. This is why more and more people are turning to the natural choice of vitamins as lupus treatment. A leading light in natural lupustreatment is vitamin E.Lupus: The Enemy WithinWhat can vitamin E do to relieve the signs and symptoms of lupus? The answer to that question begins with looking more closely with what we are up against. The most dangerous and common type of lupus disease is Systemic lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which can affect and damage any of the body?s organs such as skin, liver, kidney, joints, blood vessels, brain, blood, and nervous ...

Win Back Your Brain From Alzheimer's Disease, Take In Antioxidants
2008-03-09 15:54:00
By: Sharon Bell There are more than 75 million baby boomers in the United States. And as the biggest portion of this generation approaches retirement age, more and more of its members are becoming concerned about memory problems, particularly Alzheimer's disease. If you belong to the babyboomer generation, you should be concerned too; the common form of Alzheimer's disease can afflict anyone who is at least sixty years old. This disease can be more sporadic rather than hereditary, which is why Alzheimer's has become the most common cause for dementia and other ailments characterized by the decline in brain functioning.Causes Of Alzheimer's Disease Doctors have been continually baffled by what causes Alzheimer's. But one thing is for sure, as people age, a waxy fibrous stuff called amyloid starts to accumulate in the brain. Amyloid plaque is responsible for the degeneration of various tissues in the body; you can just imagine what this substance can do when it gathers in your bra...

Supplementary Nutrition
2008-03-03 01:43:00
By: Sasi KalaAs a lot of antioxidant foods that we consume are from vegetables, people should go in for vegetables that are rich in colour and high in phytonutrients. Excellent choices of vegetables are broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers. The skins of several fruits like grapes, mangoes, straw berries, peaches and vegetables that give the food colour, flavour and scent contain nutrients called phytonutrients. They are simply the best types of antioxidant foods. The supplement recommended for these types of foods is the coq10 that gives you a high antioxidant value.Even though the best sources for antioxidants are fruits and vegetables, they are often produced with the help of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and different types of fertilizers. Therefore it is better to use organically grown vegetables that are high in antioxidants than commercially grown ones. Organically grown vegetables may be costlier but they prove to be very effective in the long run. In today's busy...

Antioxidant Dietary Supplement
2008-03-01 03:15:00
By: Vincent Platania"Antioxidant dietary supplement" is a catch phrase that is bantered about without much clarification. American's are educated in the simple definition of antioxidant: cancer fighter. There is really more to be explained about how these supplements work. Still one thing that isunquestionably true is the high incidence of cancer especially in older people. The American Cancer Society reported that between 1997 through 2001 the rate at which new cases of all types of cancer were diagnosed in the United States was about 470 per 100,000 people. During the same time period there were about 200 cancer deaths per 100,000 people per year. It further reported that 76% of all cancers are diagnosed in persons aged 55 and older. That would suggest that while the cancer rate is high; the death rate from cancer is not as high. With that much cancer in the population it is no wonder that many people have decided on a course of preventative medicine. But what does an antioxidant d...

By: Michelle NewportAutoimmunity involves the immune system failing to recognize the body's cells and tissues as being a part of the body, which results in the immune system attacking those cells and tissues. Any disease resulting from autoimmunity is called an auto-immune disorder. There are over 60 known disorders thought to be related to autoimmunity. Below is a summarized list of conditions related to autoimmune disorders :Alopecia Areata ?An autoimmune disorder that is characterized by hair loss. It is found commonly in men and women and can occur at any age, including childhood.Alzheimer's Disease ? Characterized as a progressive brain disorder, which involves a decline in social and intellectual abilities. Alzheimer's Disease is thought to be associated with free radical damage in the brain and inorganic aluminum.Celiac Disease ?
