If you want to lose weight and stay healthy you not only need to eat healthy food, you need to exercise too. Exercise helps you feel better in so many ways - it releases endorphins into your body which have a 'feel good' factor, it tones up your body and helps your heart, and of course it burns up calories too which can help you lose weight. For most kinds of exercise you'll need some kind of equipment or clothing/footwear. It's important to take some advice on this or you could find that you injure yourself with ill fitting shoes for instance. Many people find that they either don't have the time to go the the gym or don't want to go when they finish work and prefer to buy equipment to use at home. If you decide this is the best option for you then when you go to buy your exercise bike/rowing machine/multigym etc, make sure you take the advice offered to you. Many fitness shops now have both a web site and a shop to visit so that you can see the equipment before you buy it...

A balanced diet
2007-03-21 15:20:00
One of the most important aspects of healthy eating is making sure that you eat the right amount of food for you, depending on your lifestyle. Do you know what foods you should be eating for a balanced, healthy diet? A balanced diet should be made up of a variety of foods such as fruit and veg., protein and carbohydrates. I'd like to focus on each group of foods individually.CarbohydratesAt least a third of our diet should be made up of carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. These foods provide us with energy. Although you may think that carbohydrates contain lots of calories they are actually less fattening than fats. However, be careful not to add too much of that fat to your carbohydrates (eg. potatoes and pasta)! There are currently lots of low carbodhyrate diets around but these diets can often mean that you're eating more fat instead.Wholemeal carbohydrates such as brown rice and wholegrain bread are even better for you because they contain more fibre/...

Eat right, keep moving. You just have read all that you need to know about how to prevent being overweight.Of course, once we are overweight, we usually want to trim down for lots of reasons, some related to health, others having to do with looks. In addition, it is never too late to lose weight. But the fact is, it is a whole lot easier to prevent putting on pounds than to try losing them later on. And if there is one thing we all know, it is that weight gain is likely to happen if we do not take forward-looking steps to stop it.Health experts say that most people who are into losing weight usually stray. They tend to go back to their old eating habits even after they learn to enjoy low-fat eating. They tend to return to sedentary ways even though they enjoy exercising. But despite the momentum toward weight gain, you can stop it from happening, experts say. And there are plenty of good reasons to avoid excess pounds, reasons that go beyond vanity or social acceptance. The Way to Losin...

Healthy Eating Out
2007-02-27 12:22:00
It can be hard to stick to your healthy diet when you're invited out, but there are some things that you can do to make your meal a healthier one.Try to avoid high fat and high salt content foods. Salty foods cause water retention as well as increasing your risk of high blood pressure. Also try to steer clear of cream or cheese sauces, and sweet sickly desserts. Too much alcohol is also a no-no - it can double the calorie content of a meal.Look for items that are listed as grilled, steamed, stir-fried or roasted instead. Lean meat and fish dishes are good, along with vegetable based sauces such as lemon or tomato. Choose a dessert that is high in fruit content.Don't skip meals during the day because you'll just eat more when you go out. If you really would like one of the creamy desserts, then have it but leave out the starter instead.

Spoil yourself

Yesterday I went with a couple of friends for a 'pamper' day. We had a Jacuzzi, sauna, massage and lunch out. It was good to spend time with friends doing something a little different. Sometimes you need to take some 'me' time. If you've been feeling stressed recently, why not take some 'me' time. It might not be a Jacuzzi and sauna that you want - maybe a walk in the countryside, or by the sea, or lunch with friends would be better for you.If you include some kind of exercise, like a walk, or trip to the gym, it will help clear your mind and make you feel so much better afterwards. I have a feeling that our day out might become a regular thing because we all felt wonderful when we went home.Have you ever tried a sauna? It's good for you! As well as making you perspire which helps to eliminate toxins and impurities from your body, the increased blood flow to your extremities due to the high heat can help areas that have poor blood flow. Inhalation of steam in a sauna can hel...

Much as I'd like to think that you're all going to take my advice for a slow healthy, permanent weight loss, I realise that some of you would prefer something a little more immediate than that. I've had a look at some diet plans -you can read what I think of them in the Review s section. More to be added soon so watch this space.I've also added a Post pregnancy weight loss section. As well as advice on weight loss, it also has links to other sites that provide comprehensive information for new parents. There's also some information on Julie Tupler's very well received book 'Lose your mummy tummy'.

Thanks to my friend Pauline for reminding me of this. If you feel hungry try having a drink before you eat anything. You could well be dehydrated and need a drink instead of food.Did you know that as you get older and your body starts to change (hopefully not too much!!), you need fewer calories?A word about snacks. If you feel the need to eat something between meals then have a banana, apple, handful of sunflower seeds etc. Doing this can mean that you don't over eat at mealtimes because you're not so hungry.Don't forget to check out my Super Foods page.

A few tips for the day!
2007-01-30 08:57:00
A few things that might help you along the way:Stop eating when you feel full. That might mean you leave lots left on your plate, but if your brain is telling your stomach that it's full, then stop, you've had enough. If you find changing your diet hard then try this. Eat a healthy diet for five days, then have two days when you eat what you want. You might find Saturday morning until Sunday evening a good time to do this. During those two days you can eat whatever you like - BUT you must return to your healthy diet afterwards. Hopefully you should find that the longer you do this the less you want to pig out during those two days. There will be times when you find it very hard to stick to your healthy diet, you're not a saint after all (much as you might want to be!). Don't beat yourself up over it. Perhaps you could count that towards your two days eating what you want, then carry on with healthy eating. The longer you eat healthily, the less likely you are to want to go back t...

Calorie countingOne pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. To lose weight and stay healthy you should aim to lose no more than 1 to 2 lbs a week. This way you’re much more likely to keep the weight off once you reach your goal. Try swapping high calorie foods for lower calorie alternatives. Here are a few examples –Swap whole milk for half fat or reduced fat milkice cream for sorbet or frozen yoghurtcheese sauce on pasta for tomato saucePlease check out my Super Foods page-I'm adding to it all the timeExerciseThe only way to reduce your weight is by using up more calories than you have taken in, either because physical activity has burned off the calories, or because you have taken fewer in than you need. The healthiest, and easiest way to exercise, and to lose weight is to find something that you like doing and will enjoy. It’s no good slogging away at the gym three times a week if you absolutely hate it. Find something you like and do that instead – walk, skip, play badmi...

So, how do you lose weight healthily and permanently?Try some or all of these tips –Eat smaller portions! Not tiny, just smaller than you usually eat.Don’t skip breakfast – even if you don’t feel like eating first thing in the morning. It will help boost your metabolism and stop you snacking later on in the dayEat more slowly so that your brain has time to tell your stomach it’s full.Lose weight slowly. If you lose weight too quickly your body can lose muscle and water as well as fat which will lead to your metabolism slowing down to conserve energy. It’s your muscles that burn up the energy.Get your brain in gear. You have to have the right mind set. Only you can decide you want to lose weight, and you have to have a positive attitude towards what you want to achieve. Write down your goals and how you’re going to achieve them. Try writing down a food diary for a week and you might surprise yourself.Be careful what you drink. There are lots of empty calories in...

Risks of being overweight Diabetes – type 2 diabe...
2007-01-24 09:53:00
Risks of being overweightDiabetes – type 2 diabetes is linked with being overweight. You are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are overweight. If you have type 2 diabetes your blood sugar level will be higher than normal which leads in turnto a higher risk of, amongst other things, early death, kidney disease and blindness. Losing weight combined with exercise can lessen the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. And if you already have type 2 diabetes, losing weight and exercise can help you control your blood sugar levels.Heart disease and stroke – being overweight results in extra work for your heart. Having high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels contributes to heart disease and stroke. Losing even a small amount of weight will help lessen the chances of developing heart disease.Osteoarthritis – there’s more pressure on your joints, especially your hips and knees if you are overweight. This in turn speeds up the wearing away of the cartilage between...

The healthy way to lose weight permanently !!I've created this blog to highlight the advantages of losing weight slowly, methodically, and most of all healthily. There is so much advice that is wrong, or even dangerous that I'd like to redress the balance. I'd like to show that it is possible to lose weight permanently by changing your diet and lifestyle. And I'll be adding advice, and showing how by eating the right 'super' foods you can change your life. Are you a yoyo dieter? Have you tried lots of different diets and failed with them all?The trouble with most of the popular diets, is that they may work in the short term, but would you want to be on them forever? Because as soon as you stop these diets, you’re likely to pile the weight back on.Here’s the most important point you need to know that will help you with your permanent weight loss – you need to focus on a healthy diet and not a weight loss diet. If your diet is healthy, and you include some exercise in your ...
