Jay Levine, who devised the concept, lost 15 pounds last year walking on his treadmill while answering email and surfing the web! Will it work for you? Can't hurt to try...read all about the concept here. What do you think? A good reason for that mornin' cup of joe
2007-02-24 08:11:04
Are you a coffee drinker? Like me, do you enjoy coffee's heavenly aroma and taste, not to mention its power to get you moving in the morning?Turns out coffee may have something more going for it. A study conducted in Spain, and reported on recently in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemisty, found that coffee may be a source of fiber. Fiber? And you thought fiber was only found in whole grains, fruits and veggies! These results need to be confirmed in future studies, but the results are quite interesting. 100 ml of coffee (less than 1/2 a cup) contained between .47 grams and .75 grams of dietary fiber. This is between 2.54 and 20% of the powdered coffee bean. To put this in perspective, the same amount of wine contained .14% fiber and orange juice had .19%.Interesting...Here's the link for the article, More Fiber in Coffee than Orange Juice? if you want to read more.

Drink up to lose weight?
2007-02-23 20:11:02
There's a new diet aid on store shelves. Guess what? Its water. Well, its actually water with some whey protein added.Sounds kinda strange, huh? Here's the scoop...Protein water, called Special K20, is being manufactured by the same company that gave us Special K. Wonder how I knew? :surprisedQuestion: Why would the Special K people who are marketing their own Special K diet need to sell Protein water if their cereal diet really worked? Think that one over!At any rate, this Special K20 water supposedly helps stop cravings which makes it easier to stay on your diet. With its 50 calories, its certainly not a "free" food.Sure protein is a very satiating nutrient, but for the price--about $6 for 4 bottles??Not for me... I'll stick with low fat milk or cheese instead.

Is your eating out of control?
2007-02-21 08:07:03
If you think it is, take heart, you are not alone. According to a recently conducted survey at Harvard, binge eating is more common than any other eating problem. 2.8% of American adults (that's 1 in 35) consider themselves to be binge eaters. That compares to 0.6% that have anorexia, and 1% with bulimia.Researchers have found that bingeing is more common among those with weight issues. Binge eating often begins as a response to some very stressful event, such as a loved one dying, losing a job or even being dumped by a boyfriend. Out-of-control overeating can actually reduce anxiety (for the short term, anyway) and because it makes you feel better, it can quickly become addictive. Its a never ending cycle, though. Here's what happens. Anxiety or other negative, uncomfortable feelings initiate a binge, the binge acts as a sedative, calming you down and helping you to feel better. The problem is that this calm feeling can often be followed by intense guilt feelings, b...

Cantaloupe and peanut butter recalls
2007-02-20 20:06:03
Cantaloupe and peanut butter aren't two foods that usually are thought of as going together. Not to eat, anyway.Today they are linked together...batches of both have been recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.Individuals from 39 states have been victims of food poisoning from eating peanut butter processed by ConAgra Foods and distributed as Peter Pan and also a WalMart house brand, Great Valley. If you have any in the house, throw it out immediately!Cantaloupes from Dole sold in the Eastern US and Canada have also been recalled due to salmonella. No illnesses have been reported from these Costa Rican-grown melons, however tests on the fruit were positive for contamination. What to do? If you have questions about any cantaloupe bought recently, call the Dole Company at 1-800-232-8888.Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. There are about 40,000 cases of salmonella poisoning reported each year in the US, some with fatal outco...

Ask the online nutritionist...
2007-02-19 20:05:01
This past week I've spent time reading through some online forums about nutrition. One theme that jumped out at me again and again was the confusion that people have about just what to eat. How many calories should I eat? How fast can I lose 25 pounds? What supplement should I take to add muscle bulk? The list goes on...One of the problems is that there are more diets and weight loss supplements available nowadays than you can count...and nearly all claim to be "the answer".Well, obviously "the answer" isn't working...did you know that approximately 2/3's of Americans are considered overweight or obese? Do you have questions about weight loss, healthy eating, or just general nutrition? What are you interested in learning about? (You must be interested in something about food or you wouldn't be reading this blog, now would you?)I'd love to help end your nutrition confusion....post a comment or send me an email...let me know...I...

Healthy munching from vending machines...too good to be true?
2007-02-16 02:01:04
What foods do you associate with vending machines? Chances are good that visions of Coke, Snickers, Skittles, potato chips and cookies are dancing in your head. Nothing but fat, sugar, sodium and calories all wrapped up in snacks that just taste good, right? Is there any way to make healthy food choices from a vending machine? Some selections certainly are considered more healthy than others. Foods that tend to have higher vitamin, mineral and perhaps fiber contents aren't always readily visible, though, but you can find them. What sorts of "healthier" foods do I mean?Nuts, dried fruit, pretzels, whole grain cereal bars, baked chips, bottled water or 100% fruit juices are some to be on the look out for.It does appear that other healthy foods will soon be finding their way into a vending machine near you, though! In fact, if you live in San Diego, you may have seen some already. What am I talking about?YoNaturals has successfully piloted healthy food vending machines...

Happy Chocolate Day!
2007-02-15 14:00:10
On this special day of love, roses and yes, chocolate, I thought it was time for a break from our usual food news.I received the following from another nutritionist, Jessica Setnick, in her monthly ezine, Snackbites with Jessica. (If you want to sign up for your own subscription, head on over to her website, Understandingnutrition.)Here goes...10 Rules for Being Human1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours until further notice.2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informational school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid, but they will keep coming.3. There are no mistakes.Growth is a process of trial and error experimentation. The “failed” experiments (lessons that don’t meet your expectations) are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately “works.”4. A lesson is repeated until learned.A lesson will...

Healthy Eating at a Deli
2007-02-14 13:59:02
Are you trying to eat healthy? Have better success eating healthy at home than when eating out? Here's a few tips for choosing healthy sandwiches from a deli, from a book I recommend, So What Can I Eat?! How to Make Sense of the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Make Them Your Own (Wiley 2006), Elisa Zied, MS, RD, with Ruth Winter, MS.1. Order sandwiches made on whole-wheat bread.2. Ask for less meat (2 to 4 ounces should be plenty, depending on your individual calorie needs).3. Ask for vegetable toppings like lettuce, tomato, peppers, grilled vegetables or a small amount (1/8) of a small avocado.4. Ask for sides of condiments like mayonnaise (light or regular) or salad dressing and apply them yourself.5. Order a half sandwich and a small cup of vegetable-based soup, such as minestrone.

Walking for weight loss...pedometer recommendations
2007-02-14 13:59:02
Walking has become quite a popular way to get fit and burn off some calories. Exercise is good for you, right?Do you know how far you walk? Before pedometers, I've been known to go for a long walk, then get in the car and try and retrace my steps, figuring out the total distance I walked via the car's odometer.Trust me, a pedometer is much easier, is probably more accurate, and is really not too expensive.Like anything else in life, you get what you pay for, though. There are some very inexpensive models you can buy (I'm talking $3 or $4), but for the most part these are inaccurate and a waste of time. Here are a few tips compiled by members of the Weight Management practice group of the American Dietetic Association-- you might find these helpful if you decide to go pedometer-shopping: Look for these features: Ensure closed case protection. Pedometer Leash/safety strap Get warranty if able. Model that flips open and spring loaded clip vs. molded plastic clip th...

Nutrition Facts 102: Labelman to the Rescue!
2007-02-07 19:54:01
How much time have you spent reading nutrition labels? (And I'm not talking about a quick scan to find out how many calories the food contains!) There really is quite a bit of information contained on a Nutrition Fact s label, and once you know what it all means you are equipped to make the most informed decisions possible about the foods you buy and eat. For example, ever wondered what % Daily Value (DV) refers to? What does it mean when the label on the box of your favorite cereal that you eat every morning for breakfast lists the potassium content at 230mg or 7% DV? Is that adequate to meet your needs or not? Daily Values are a way to represent your requirements for a given nutrient assuming you follow a 2000 calorie diet. Why 2000 calories? Its a good, average figure for an adult's calorie requirements, although some people need more calories than this and others less, depending on age, weight and physical activity levels. There is a fun online learning tool called, Mak...

Have a sweet tooth?
2007-02-07 01:52:02
Let's face it. There aren't many among us that don't have a sweet tooth. (ok..now you know, I do too!) Sometimes it is just plain agonizing to pass up those sweet treats that are sooooo yummy good. Maybe the results of a study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Nov. 2006) will make you think twice before you reach for that extra soda.Researchers from Sweden examined the diets of 80,000 men and women over a 7 year period. They found that those individuals that consumed added sugars at least 5 times daily had a 70% greater chance of developing pancreatic cancer than those who consumed no added sugar. And get this...those who drank 2 or more sodas a day had twice the risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who drank none!

Nutrition 101: Breakfast on the run
2007-01-31 01:47:01
If you are anything like me, sometimes voices from my childhood can replay themselves, especially when I least want to hear them! Does this sound familiar? Its one of those frantic, chaotic mornings when you oversleep, you can’t find what blouse you want to wear because its in the dirty clothes hamper, you run out of toilet paper, then you forget that you son needs a lunch packed…you know what I mean. You barely make it out the door with your shoes on, never mind a nutritious breakfast in your belly. Eating healthy is the absolute last thing on your mind, and then that voice…”Did you eat breakfast? Good nutrition depends upon eating healthy to start your day!” Ever since you were a child you probably remember hearing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. From your mom to your teacher, they told you that filling up in the morning with a nutritious breakfast was instrumental to thinking and performing your best throughout the day. You may have even heard that eating...

Health Horrors: 10 foods you could do without!
2007-01-31 01:47:01
A new year is now upon us. And for most, that means its time to reflect, change some old habits, write down those resolutions and get started on a new path to healthy living (aka, lose weight!!)Of course that means being more conscious of what you eat. While I believe that all foods can be eaten as part of a healthy diet (providing portion control, balance, variety and moderation are exercised as well), some foods definitely pack more of a nutritional punch than others. But which foods are the worst? Several well known registered dietitians and nutritionists were asked which foods they considered to be health horrors. Read the article, below, to find out.But before you do, ask yourself what you would include on the list of top 10 health horrors. What foods have all the makings of a 'nutrition nightmare'? What's to eat in 2007?

Food fads come and go. Take a minute and reflect back on some popular foods from years past...does anyone buy oat bran anymore?
