When your waters break early (preterm prelabour rupture of membranes) PROM
2008-04-27 23:25:00
How will I know if my waters have broken? You may notice a ?gush? of fluid or you may feel damp. The fluid (known as amniotic fluid) is a clear or pinkish colour. It may be slightly blood stained. The amount of fluid you lose may vary from a trickle to a gush. This usually happens once labour has started. If it happens between 24 weeks and 37 weeks, it means that your waters have broken earlier than normal. Two out of every 100 women (2%) experience this during pregnancy. Break ing of the waters is also known as rupture of the membranes. If your waters break early, it is also referred to as preterm prelabour rupture of membranes. What should I do? If you think that you are leaking fluid from the vagina, it is advisable to wear a sanitary pad (not a tampon) and monitor the colour and smell of the fluid, as well as how much is leaking. Sometimes the leaking fluid is urine. Leaking urine can be normal during pregnancy. Leaking amniotic fluid smells different from the smell of urine....

Rowan Pelling on the independent midwife who coached her towards the home b
2008-04-27 23:22:00
Rowan Pelling on the independent midwife who coached her towards the home birth she thought she'd never have When I found out I was pregnant with my second child, I knew exactly what I sought in my ideal midwife. I told my husband I wanted a "white witch" - the kind of earthy, charismatic wise woman whose understanding of the uterus owed as much to vocation, experience and instinct as to medical textbooks. Rowan Pelling: 'I had to overcome my residual terror' The reason for my quest was that - despite being 40 years old with one previous Caesarean section, rendering me a "high risk" labour - I was, to my astonishment, considering a home birth. I am hardly the masochistic, tree-hugging yoga freak of natural childbirth cliché, after all. Indeed, I love my creature comforts and abhor physical exertion. So I had much sympathy for aghast friends who wailed: "Doesn't that mean no drugs?" and: "What if something goes wrong?" An obstetrician warned me sternly of the "small but...

Traditional Vs. Baby-Led Breastfeeding
2008-04-27 09:39:00
"Giving babies regular, short feeds may benefit them and their mothers more than the popular 'baby-led' method", reports The Daily Telegraph today. That's according to a study that found regular feeds of up to 10 minutes on each breast led to increased weight gain. BBC News also covers the study of 63 breastfeeding mothers in Bradford. Half of them were told to use one breast to feed their baby, as and when it wanted being fed, and to only use the other breast if the baby was still hungry. The other half were advised to follow a routine of using each breast for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time, and to feed their baby about every three hours during the day, and on demand at night. The researchers found that babies in the second group were breastfed for longer, and gained more weight from birth to six-to-eight weeks. These reports are based on a relatively small study, and may not be representative of what might be seen in a larger group of women, or in women from other areas ...

Results From Phase 2b "DEEP" Study In Severe Pre-Eclampsia
2008-04-27 09:38:00
Protherics PLC ("Protherics" or the "Company"), the international biopharmaceutical company focused on critical care and cancer, announces that its placebo-controlled phase 2b Digoxin Immune Fab (DIF) Efficacy Evaluation in Pre-eclampsia ("DEEP") study in severe pre-eclampsia has met one of its two primary endpoints. Severe pre-eclampsia is a potentially life threatening complication of pregnancy for which there is no effective treatment other than delivery of the baby. Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant death throughout the world. The DEEP study was designed to investigate whether treatment with a DIF (Digibind®*, GlaxoSmithKline) could influence the progression of the disease by neutralising endogenous digoxin-like factors (EDLFs) which are produced by the placenta and are present at higher levels in some women with pre-eclampsia. The study involved 51 women with severe pre-eclampsia who were in the 24th - 34th week of pregnancy, and for whom delivery of the...

Improving Pregnancy Prospects After Cancer Treatment
2008-04-27 09:36:00
It has been reported for the first time in Germany that healthy ovarian tissue has been taken from a non-pregnant woman with cancer and then re-implanted after cancer therapy. The patient is now 32 years old and could become pregnant as a result. This case is described by Ralf Dittrich and his colleagues from Erlangen University Hospital in the current issue of Deutsches Arzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2008; 105[15]: 274-8). Anal carcinoma was diagnosed in this young patient in 2004 and chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy was recommended. As the ovaries lie near to the tumor, they are often damaged by therapy of this sort and the women become infertile. The Erlangen physicians succeeded in removing healthy ovarian tissue from the woman before treatment and to freeze it. The patient was then given the recommended cancer treatment. She tolerated this well and has not suffered any relapse. On the other hand, her menstrual periods had stopped, in spite of hormone treatme...

Eat Less For A Girl, More For A Boy? NHS Choices Response
2008-04-27 09:36:00
"Eat breakfast if you want your baby to be a boy", the headline in the Daily Mail read. Women are "more likely to have boys if they eat plenty and, crucially, have breakfast every day. And if it is cereal, the odds are even more in a boy's favour", the newspaper explains. This new scientific study investigating whether calorie intake around the time of conception can influence the sex of your baby has received widespread press coverage. The Mail reports that "this is the first scientifically proven way of influencing the gender of a baby without the need for expensive medical treatment" while The Independent says that "the trend to skip breakfast could be altering the male/female balance in the population". The findings will undoubtedly spark keen interest among the population at large. However, although this study has been carefully designed and conducted to see whether it is possible to form a theory on how natural conditions may influence the sex of a baby, it has many limitatio...

Soft IVF - Cheaper and More Natural
2008-04-27 09:33:00
A new form of cheaper, more natural IVF that could beat infertility and make you a mum? Where do I sign up? Oh, that's right, I no longer have a uterus but if I did I'd be looking into this. I'll take the Soft IVF please. It's about half the price of the conventional IVF we know and dislike and it uses far less drugs. Dr Geeta Nargund, Head of Reproductive Medicine at St George's Hospital, London, and Medical Director of Create Health Clinic, is one of a handful of UK doctors offering the new treatment. Her theory is that it is safer for the mother's health, eggs and any embryos that are created if there are no drugs or they are minimized. And the good news is that any woman recommended for IVF can use it, including those with blocked fallopian tubes - it's not discriminatory. Whereas with IVF there is four weeks of drug-taking, first to down-regulate hormones then to stimulate egg production, with the new technique there is only up to a week of 'gentle drug-taking' in s...

Pregnancy Week by Week - Week 38 Only Two Weeks of Pregnancy to Go © Brenda Lane Apr 25, 2008 Your baby is now growing by leaps and bounds with just two weeks to go. She may have dropped into your pelvis to prepare for birth. You are in the final stretches of your pregnancy in Week 38. It is important to get some rest and prepare for your baby's arrival. One way you can do that is to slow down your work schedule if you are working outside the home. Here are some other things you should know about Week 38 of pregnancy: What is happening with Your Baby? In week 38, your baby is still growing at a rapid pace. He may be nearly 37-38 cm in length (about 15 inches) and as much as 3,100 grams (or 6 1/2 pounds.) If you are expecting a boy, his testicles will likely be fully decended by Week 38. If you are expecting a girl, her labia will be fully developed at this stage of pregnancy. Typically in the last few weeks of your pregnancy, your baby will have dropped into your pelvis and ...

The History of the Midwife
2008-04-24 22:23:00
The History of the Midwife Modern History There are Biblical references to Midwives dating back to as early as 2000 BC. Throughout history, midwives as independent practitioners are identified as the guardians of normal childbirth. Their knowledge of women?s health has been seen as mystical, having power over nature and concerned with matters not understood by men. According to The Encyclopedia Britannica, ?The profession of midwife must be one of the oldest, being clearly recognized in the earliest books of the Old Testament and an accepted element in the social structure in ancient Greece and Rome.? 1 The word midwife is from the Anglo-Saxon ?mit wif? or ?with woman?. The ancient called her the wise woman ? as she is known in France (sage-femme) and Germany (weise frau). 2 Midwives in the Bible Biblical references to the practice of midwifery date back nearly four thousand years. It is mentioned in Genesis 35:17, which may...
substance abuse in pregnancy
2008-04-24 22:21:00
Introductory Facts ? During the first trimester of the mother?s pregnancy, when basic body structures are rapidly forming, the fetus is extremely vulnerable to environmental factors such as viral infections, radiation, drugs, and other tetratogens (an agent or influence that causes physical defects in a developing embryo), any of which can cause congenial malformations (A physical defect at the time of birth, either inherited or caused during gestation). (1) ? Prenatal exposure to psychoactive drug, including tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine, are serious and growing problems. (1) ? According to a recent National Institute on Drug Abuse study on estimated use of selected substances during pregnancy, 5.5% of the women surveyed reported using illicit drugs while they were pregnant. Additionally, 18.8% reported using alcohol, and 20.4%reported using tobacco. (3) ? Parents who abuse alcohol and illicit drugs face risks of losing custody of their children. Fetal/ foetal alcohol syndrome
2008-04-24 22:18:00
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) refers to a group of physical and mental birth defects resulting from a women?s drinking alcohol heavily or at crucial stages during pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome was first named and treated in the late 1960's. This condition results from the toxic effect of alcohol and its chemical factors on the developing fetus. FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation occurring in 1 out of every 750 births. The frequency of FAS occurs about 1.9 times out of every 1000 births according to the latest figures, and minor effects can be seen in up to 20% of pregnancies per year. This number changes drastically for women who are clearly alcoholics. As high as 29 children out of every 1000 births will suffer from FAS if the mother is an alcoholic. The overwhelming consistency of this disease is that it is 100% preventable if a mother would drink no alcohol while pregnant. There are three major effects or hallmarks of drinking while pregnan...
multiple births
2008-04-24 22:17:00
Multiple births are rare in humans with twins as being the most common form of this event. Multiple births can arise in many different combinations of ways but the probability of giving birth to more than one child remains fairly constant when compared to the entire human race. The chances of multiple births can also vary from race and genetic background. Scientist and researchers do not know what the exact cause of these variations is but many of them feel that it is caused by hormone differences between different racial groups and/or the difference in social class. The prenatal and infant mortality is much higher in multiple pregnancies than in pregnancies that only involves one child. The danger of premature birth also increased with the higher number of offspring that are involved. In many multiple births, not all of the children survived to childhood or were born dead. Through the advances in technology, the survival rate of infants born in a multiple pre...
The Truth About Losing Your Mucous Plug
2008-04-24 10:17:00
Throughout your pregnancy you will notice an increase in vaginal discharge, known as leukorrhea. It tends to increase as the pregnancy progresses, which causes many expectant mothers to wear panty liners especially towards the end of the pregnancy. This is very common and is not something to be concerned about. Typically the discharge is creamy, white or beige, and is globby/ boogery like you would have come out of your nose. If the discharge is brown, red, pink or watery, you would want to consult your OB right away. Brown discharge usually is nothing, because it is considered old blood, which means you are not currently bleeding. If it is red or pink it may mean there is a problem and your doctor will want to see you right away. Clear watery discharge may be amniotic fluid, and that is something you will most definitely need to be seen for as well. Two things to keep in mind while you are pregnant, is that you should never ever wear a tampon or douche as a result of the discharge....

Unique Baby Names
2008-04-24 10:16:00
Expectant parents often say they are looking for a unique baby name. But what do they mean? Do they really want a name that is totally unique? In the strictest sense, if you want such a name, then of course you want it to be the only one of its kind. But how realistic is that? Realistic or not, a sizeable number of prospective parents still try to come up with "one-of-a-kind" names. Some names, such as Mackenzie, now have literally dozens of spelling variations, including McKenzee, MacKinzee, and Machenzie. But taken to the extreme, the hunt for a unique baby name can lead to some curious, clunky variants. Do you want your child to be named "Mukkenzy," after all other possible variations have been taken, simply so your boy or girl can have that unique name? Probably not. You probably don't want to go with a name like Pilot Inspektor, Moxie Crimefighter, or Version 2.0 either. A growing body of research suggests that giving your child a unique baby name may not be the best thing f...

Ectopic Pregnancy - Ten Symptoms You Should Not Ignore
2008-04-24 10:15:00
An ectopic pregnancy, sometimes called a tubal pregnancy, happens when a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the lining of the uterus. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube but other places where an ectopic can implant are the abdominal cavity, ovary or cervix. Ectopic pregnancies are sometimes difficult to diagnose. Symptoms are very similar to normal pregnancy symptoms and some women have no symptoms at all. When a pregnancy starts to develop somewhere other than the uterus there is no room for the placenta to attach or the pregnancy to grow and develop properly. A pregnancy that develops inside the fallopian tube will eventually rupture if left untreated. Complications from a ruptured tube can be life threatening. In fact, ectopic pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal death in the first trimester. A ruptured tube is a medical emergency. Here are ten ectopic pregnancy symptoms you should not ignore. 1. Vaginal spotting or bleeding: One of the first w...

What Husbands Can Do When Their Wives Have Postpartum Depression
2008-04-24 10:14:00
When your wife has postpartum depression (PPD), which affects about 1 in 7 women after childbirth, you might feel confused, annoyed, scared, sad, worried or any combination of these. My husband certainly did. You might be thinking, "Why can't she just be happy? What's wrong with her? Aren't new moms supposed to be happy now that the baby's finally here? What's going on?" Remember that PPD is a biochemical disorder which is no one's fault - not yours or hers. Although you can't fix it like you can a broken cabinet or leaky faucet, it's your job to support her as she recovers. Warning signs of PPD include anxiety, lack of energy, frequent crying, inability to sleep at night even when the baby's sleeping, low self-esteem, guilt feelings, appetite problems, irritability or anger, overwhelmed feelings, forgetfulness, decreased sex drive, and hopelessness. The normal Baby Blues should be gone by two weeks postpartum, so if she's still feeling weepy, she needs help. Or, if the s...

You, Your Unborn Baby And Stress
2008-04-24 10:13:00
Being pregnant can be one of the most wonderful times in a woman's life as well as one of the most terrifying. There you are, carrying a real live, tiny person inside you. The awesome responsibility of it can naturally cause a lot of stress. Pregnancy and the prospect of becoming a mother can become overwhelming for many women when having to cope with the many other daily pressures of life. Even though it's only natural for you to feel stressed out when you are pregnant it poses some real dangers for both you and your baby. New research shows that women who suffer chronic or severe stress during pregnancy are more likely to pass on illnesses or other problems to their unborn children than women with lower stress levels. Stress Can Penetrate Nature's Defenses Babies in the womb are supposed to be insulated from their mothers' stress by the placenta. It generally acts as a barrier so that stress hormones and other harmful substances cannot get to the baby. But new findings reve...

Postpartum/postnatal Weight Loss
2008-04-24 10:12:00
Congratulations! You have had your baby and are now ready to get your body back! Postpartum weight loss is made to seem like a given...like it is so easy by the way it is portrayed in the movies and on TV. But that is not typically the case for many women. There is nothing more depressing than seeing your once size 4 body, barely squeezing into a size 8 pair of jeans 2 months after giving birth. It feels like you will NEVER get rid of the baby weight...but you will! That is...if you are willing to work at it. The first thing to remember is that "You JUST had a BABY!" so give yourself some time. It took you 9 months to gain the weight, it may take you that long to lose it. Sometimes though, you may not lose all of the pounds you gained, but you may lose all of the inches (if that makes sense). Most women find that their bodies have changed after having a baby. Usually you are more curvy than before...which can be a good thing! So remember, take it slow, and don't be so hard on your...

Trying To Get Pregnant Quickly - What You Can Do Right Now - Part 2
2008-04-24 10:11:00
You've Decided To Try and Get Pregnant , When Do You Start Changing Your Diet? This is a question that taunts most of us women; "when do I start changing my diet, and how long do I have to keep it up to become pregnant?" First of all, you need to consult your doctor because you can't know for sure what your body is doing, and what its current state is without certain tests. While your doctor will be able to give you a much more clear and detailed outlook on things, there are changes that you should be making now that will only go to increase the chances of you getting pregnant. In General you should start changing your eating habits to a more healthy and balanced diet about 4 months before conception, and continue to do so all the way through until your child's birth. This does not necessarily mean that you cannot become pregnant during these months. That's simply something you and your doctor need to talk about. Because every one's situation is different, the time frame migh...

Blood Type And Pregnancy Diet - The Perfect Couple Blood Type And Pregnancy
2008-04-24 10:11:00
All of us go through the journey of life building up relationships along the way. We seek out people with similar interests and ideas. A healthy relationship is one where one person is able to adjust to another's needs and desires. If we consider the state of pregnancy, the expectant mother has to ensure that her body systems are functioning in harmony always. This is vital especially with regard to her circulatory system, which is the major link between her body and the growing fetus in her womb. It is the transporter of essential nutrients to the baby and so is the life support for her yet-to-be-born child. Hence, a concordant relationship is expected between her blood type and pregnancy diet. What is meant by blood type? It indicates whether antigens are present or absent in the circulating blood. Blood types can be classified into four types-type O, type AB, type A and type B. What happens if blood type and pregnancy diet are in disharmony? The systems that get affected are...

Can You Get Pregnant On Your Period?
2008-04-24 10:10:00
The debate on whether you can get pregnant on your period has been on for decades. People have varied opinions about the issue. But the ground reality is that the situation can not be generalized. Every woman's body has a different metabolism despite a generalized process of menstruation. Therefore, yes you can surely get pregnant if you have unprotected sex during your period. The chances of a woman getting pregnant during her period are low. However they increase manifold soon after the period is over. As such, there is no particular time period during the complete menstrual cycle that can be said to be safe to have unprotected sex. To understand it all better, you first need to go through the whole ovulation process. During every menstrual cycle an egg is released form the woman's ovary. If this egg gets fertilized by a sperm a pregnancy is established otherwise it is ejected from the uterine during the period. When a woman has her period, the egg is in the process of wastin...

How Many Days After Your Period Can You Get Pregnant?
2008-04-24 10:09:00
Women who are asking themselves if they are risking pregnancy on any day during their cycle should realize one thing: they need to learn more about their cycle. Learning more about how your menstrual cycle works will give you the confidence and ability to avoid pregnancy or achieve pregnancy without the aid of drugs that could be harmful to the body. The menstrual cycle begins on the first day of your period. On average, a period will last from 5 to 7 days. As soon as your period is over, your uterus begins to build a lining that would support a fertilized egg. During this time you'll notice a bit of a whitish discharge from the vagina. At first it is a bit crumbly, like rubber cement. After a few days, it turns creamy, like a lotion, and then a few days later it should increase in amount and be thick, slippery, clear and stretchy, like the uncooked white of an egg. All this happens while that lining is building inside the uterus, preparing for pregnancy. Any time during this p...

Treating Your Infertility Naturally
2008-04-23 13:01:00
When it comes to discussing the matter of infertility, it's important to understand that this is a concern of both men and women. While many people seem to assume that if a child cannot be conceive the problem must be with the woman, in reality there are so many things that can hinder a man's ability to impregnate that the risk of it being the man's problem is about equal to it being the woman's issue. While there may be certain physical problems that cause infertility in a man or a woman, there are many changes one can make to their lifestyle and other choices that can help their ability to conceive. For one thing, smoking is one of the biggest causes of infertility in both men and women. When you smoke, the poisons of the nicotine are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and because the blood travels to every part of the body, this means that there are no bodily systems that are not poisoned as a result of smoking, and this includes the reproductive system. Smoking causes in...

The Truth about Vacuum Deliveries Find Out about the Risks of Vacuum Extraction before You Give Birth © Brenda Lane Apr 8, 2008 While vacuum extraction assisted births are common with some medical providers, they do carry risks primarily for the baby. What do we know about the risks of vacuum extractors? There is good evidence that around 5% of all births include the use of a vacuum extractor. While care providers often downplay the risks to the newborn and may even use expressions that vacuum assisted births are "helping the mother to give birth", there is a growing body from both medical literature and legal publications, that using a vacuum extractor during a vaginal birth or a cesarean is not a benign procedure. One 2003 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that mothers had more complications as a result of both forceps and vacuum assisted births as compared to spontaneous vaginal births. The concern over the safety of the vacuum extractor is s...
