2008-03-08 11:36:00
On 8th March 1908, about 15,000 women marched through New York City, demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. This event is honored through International Womens?Day's 2008 global theme 'Shaping Progress'. International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February 1909. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913. At a Socialist Intern...

29 th February
2008-02-29 14:48:00
This year - 2008 has 29 days for the month of February , as the year 2008 is a ?Leap Year?. The present Gregorian calendar, which is in use almost throughout the world, has both common years and leap years. A common year has 365 days and a leap year 366 days, with the extra day designated as February 29. A leap year occurs once in every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year, or the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit about the sun, which is about 365¼ days. The length of the solar year, however, is slightly less than 365¼ days, by about 11 minutes. To compensate for this discrepancy, the leap year is omitted three times every four hundred years. In other words, a century year will not be a leap year unless it is divisible by 400. Thus 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but 1600, 2000, and 2400 are leap years. The Gregorian calendar is closely based on the Julian calendar, which was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. T...

Valentine's day - Lovers?day
2008-02-15 14:31:00
The origin of ?Lovers ? day? goes back to as early as 270 A.D. As early as the fourth century B.C., the Romans engaged in an annual young man's rite to passage to the God Lupercus. The names of the teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men; thus, a man was assigned a woman companion for the duration of the year, after which another lottery was staged. After eight hundred years of this cruel practice, the early church fathers sought to end this practice. They found an answer in Valentine, a bishop who had been martyred some two hundred years earlier. St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor Claudius-II who had issued an edict forbidding marriage. This was around when the heyday of Roman empire had almost come to an end. Lack of quality administrators led to frequent civil strife. Learning declined, taxation increased, and trade slumped to a low, precarious level. And the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks...

Obesity and Overweight
2008-02-05 16:25:00
Obesity is defined simply as too much body fat. Our body is made up of water, fat, protein, carbohydrate and various vitamins and minerals. If we have too much fat ? especially in our waist area ? we are at higher risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Obesity is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack. Obesity raises blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lowers HDL "good" cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is linked with lower heart disease and stroke risk, so reducing it tends to raise the risk. Obesity raises blood pressure levels. Obesity can induce diabetes. In some people, diabetes makes these other risk factors much worse. The danger of heart attack is especially high for these people. Even when there are no adverse effects on the known risk factors, obesity by itself increases risk of heart disease. It also harms more than just the heart and blood ves...

Head Aches-Types
2008-01-29 14:23:00
Almost everyone gets headaches sometime or other. Some people complain of headache more often and resort to application of some pain balm or swallowing some headache tablet. Mostly the headaches are caused by something simple, such as staying up too late in the night resulting in lack of proper sleep, remaining around in the sun for a long time, or mental stress because of some problem or other. Although it may feel like it, a headache is not actually a pain in our brain. The brain tells us when other parts of our body hurt, but it cannot feel pain itself. Most headaches happen in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that cover our head and neck. Sometimes the muscles or blood vessels swell, tighten, or go through other changes that stimulate the surrounding nerves or put pressure on them. These nerves send a rush of pain messages to the brain, and this brings on a headache. The most common type of headache is a tension, or muscle-contraction headache. This happens when...

If We are ?Diabetic ? whether we are being treated with insulin or pills, understanding how to eat properly is important for keeping our blood glucose in good control. We must try to find healthy foods that we enjoy eating. Our meal plan should fit our lifestyle. We must eat our meals at about the same time every day, without skipping any meal.Eating about the same amount of food at the same meal and at snack-times can help us to avoid short-term problems such as a low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Our meal choices need not be very different from those eaten by other family members. It is a decrease in the amount of red cells in the blood aused by having too little iron. Iron deficiency anemia is usually caused by a diet insufficient in iron or from blood loss. Blood loss can be acute as in hemorrhage or trauma or long term as in heavy menstruation. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia. About 20% of women, 50% of pregnant women, and 3% of men are iron deficient. Some people with iron deficiency anemia always feel cold. Edmund Hilary Passed Away at 88
2008-01-11 18:27:00
Mr.Edmund Hillary, aged 88 years, the modest New Zealand beekeeper who shot to global fame as the first person to climb Mount Everest, died onFriday, the 11th January 2008. A hero to millions for his derring-do, dry wit and dedication to others, he spent much of his life working to help the people of Nepal. Hillary had a heart attack after a spell of bad health. The lanky, plain-speaking Kiwi made history on May 29, 1953, when he and Nepalese guide Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made it to the top of the world's tallest mountain, a feat that had defied mountaineers for decades. On the way back down, Hillary lifted his mask and uttered what would become one of the most famous phrases in the annals of climbing: "Well, we knocked the bastard off." Tributes quickly poured in for the legendary adventurer and philanthropist, who also led the first expedition to reach the South Pole by vehicle just four years after conquering Everest. "Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander w...

Health Benefits of Being Physically Active
2008-01-10 14:54:00
Being physically active reduces the risk of heart-related problems, including heart attack. Physical activity will improve cholesterol levels, help control high blood pressure and diabetes, and manage weight. It also will increase physical fitness and promote psychological well-being and self-esteem, and reduces depression and anxiety. Those who have already had a heart attack also will benefit greatly from being hysically active. Nowadays, many hospitals have a ?Cardiac Rehabilitation Program?. A health care provider can offer advice about a suitable program. To protect our heart, we only need to do 30 minutes of a moderate-intensity activity on most and, preferably, all days of the week. If 30 minutes is too much at one time, we can break it up into periods of at least 10 minutes each.If we have been inactive hitherto, we should start slowly to increase our physical activity. If we have coronary heart disease, we must have a check-up with a health care provider before ...

Can We Recall our Dreams?
2008-01-10 02:44:00
Normally, five minutes after the end of a dream, we forget 50 percent of the dream's content. Ten minutes later, we forget 90 percent of its content. We forget our dreams because they contain our repressed thoughts and wishes and so we should not want to remember them anyway. We are forward-thinking by nature, and remembering something back when we first wake up is difficult. Several things contribute to our not being able to remember dreams. Many things are quickly forgotten when you first wake up, such as physical sensations. Many dream images are not very intense and would therefore be easy to forget. Another reason, and probably the strongest is that we traditionally learn and remember both by association and repetition. As dreams are usually unique and somewhat vague to begin with, it stands to reason that remembering them could be difficult. Since we can not go back to our dreams to experience something again, details that are out of our realm of experience often esca...

Are Nightmares Dangerous?
2008-01-08 12:07:00
Nightmares are bad dreams by which we get frightened or annoyed during night sleep. We may have a doubt whether nightmares are dangerous .Nightmares will damage us only if we allow them to. Of course a repetitive nightmare which wakes us night after night in a cold sweat of terror is worrying, and if it persists over a long period there is no doubt that it can have an effect on our confidence and self-assurance. The answer is not to give in to it; go to bed, not fearful of the dream that is waiting for us, but ready to face up to it, to ask what it is trying to say to us and to answer its statement. Nightmares are not the product of overeating, overdrinking, or any other physical activity. They are the result of some waking anxiety which is so acute that it bursts into our dreams. Childhood, in particular, is full of such anxieties, often attached to the process of getting used to the world and facing problems which may seem stupidly minute to those who have forgotten what ...

The Former President of India DR. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam 's Speech in Hyderab
2008-01-07 13:48:00
Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice.Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that every...
