2009-09-15 20:29:00
Early Spankings Make for Aggressive Toddlers, Study ShowsTUESDAY, Sept. 15 (HealthDay News) -- Children who are spanked as 1-year-olds are more likely to behave aggressively and perform worse on cognitive tests as toddlers than children who are spared the punishment, new research shows.Though the negative effects of spanking were "modest," the study adds to a growing body of literature that's finding spanking isn't good for children.Read more...

Potty Training Frustrations
2009-09-14 12:00:00
Having a child who won't potty train for what seems like everything can leave your nerves frayed and at wits end. Daycares give you threatening deadlines, family members hound you and friends refuse to let their kids play with yours just because your child is not potty trained. At times you feel like you are in a corner and cannot get out. You try not to get mad at your child and yet the moment you smell the obvious there is nothing holding you back from lashing out.All this is normal and common. Parents get frustrated when the pressure is on because their child is not like the others. At pottytrainingsite.com we understand. Personally, I have been in this situation and it is not one I will soon forget. Each child potty trains differently: at different ages, different times, different ways and with different people. Now parents are looking at potty training their children as soon as they start walking. Others still want to wait until they feel their child is ready or more mature. Ei...

Frustraions of Potty Training
2009-08-13 20:48:00
Have you beein potty training for awhile with little to no progress? Potty training problems are common. Many parents potty training boys, for example, deal with a child who refuses to sit on the potty, go poop or even regress. As children get older they move towards independence. When you initiate potty training during the toddler years it can become a tug of war. It takes a lot of persistence, a positive attitude and reinforcement by the parent to get through potty training. Being consistent when taking a child to the potty is very important. The more consistent and persistent you are with potty training the sooner the child will understand that learning to go potty is important. There are many factors though that need to be considered when dealing with potty training problems:Children regress when something stressful has happened in their life recently. Mom went back to work, dad had to go out of town, move to a new house or even a new baby.Painful bowel movement can leave a child...

Potty Training Frustrations
2009-08-11 17:37:00
Frustrations with potty training are very common. Children resisting, refusing to use the potty or even just to poop happen everyday all over the world. Parents often feel like a failure especially when their friends and family make a comment or another child the same age is already potty trained. One thing a parent must know is that they are not alone. If you are frustrated as is your child then take a step back from potty training for at least a few days. Find other things to do that will distract you from thinking about potty training. Allow yourself to relax and for your child to as well.I understand parents are scrambling to get their child potty trained before school begins, before a big move or even before a baby arrives. The more you push the more they will push back. If a child is excessively resisting it's time to let go and work on other things. As difficult as this may be, it is so important to take a step back.Potty training is a huge milestone for a child. What a paren...

Effective Potty Training for Boys
2009-08-11 04:03:00
There came a time in my life that I literally thought I was a failure as a parent. My son refused to use the potty. I had friends and family on my case all the time lecturing me about being stern with him and that I was being too weak on him. I had just became a single parent of three kids with the youngest a newborn baby. Caleb's dad and my ex husband used every excuse in the world to not take time out to visit with him. "He is not potty trained. When he is I will start taking him places."I was exhausted, feeling like I was at wits end and I never thought Caleb would Ever potty train. It was humiliating enough that neighborhood kids as well as his sister would come in and tell me Caleb had pooped in his pants. Caleb was nearing his fourth birthday and kids were making fun of him already.I wanted him in Headstart Pre-K but they would not accept him until he was potty trained.Had it not been for meeting an acquaintance at church I cannot imagine what my life would have been. That ac...

Frustrations of potty training a boy
2009-08-09 19:35:00
Frustrated with potty training your son? I know the feeling. As a mom of three with two being boys, I do understand. When my oldest turned two I decided to start working on potty training. He peed in the potty a few times and that was it. He wanted no more of the potty. So I waited. Then disaster struck. His dad and I separated, his sister went with their dad, I lost my job and then we had to move. On top of that a new baby would be arriving soon. I tried countless times to work on potty training to no avail. He was nearing his fourth birthday and it didn't look like hope was anywhere near. I got tired of neighbor kids or his sister letting me know he had pooped in his pants. I was already changing diapers on a baby and changing his pull up was getting annoying and exhausting.Believe it or not I was getting pressured to get him potty trained. It was obvious some people were on the edge of wanting to criticize me for not taking the time out to get him potty trained. Others were comin...

"I think my child is getting ready for potty training..." So many parents, particularly first time ones look to us at pottytrainingsite.com for questions regarding potty training. They want to know what to do to begin potty training their child. Other times it is a second time parent perhaps with a child of the opposite sex of their first one, just like me.I remember with my oldest child, my daughter Shiloh, that I had many friends, family and co-workers giving me advice on potty training. Some of her friends were already potty trained and I was beginning to feel behind. One friend though reassured me that she would get potty trained at the right time. And she did. At 2 1/2 she was potty trained. So when my son Caleb arrived, I thought when he is old enough for potty training it will go as smooth as it did with his sister. Wrong! At first things were going great with him sitting and peeing on the potty here and there. Then our world got turned upside down with the separation of his ...

After Potty Training
2009-08-03 02:23:00
What happens once you get your child consistently going to the potty? Well, many things can happen. Most children will continue on smoothly while others will hit bumps in the road. There are also the times when they have accidents every so often. It's all common and it is okay. Reassuring your child that it is okay after an accident or a time when they go backwards is so important. Keep it as positive as possible and always praise them for their efforts.Just today my youngest son who is 4 years old (and been potty trained for six months) had an accident while we were eating lunch at Burger King. I had just taken him to the potty prior to eating and he went pee. A few minutes after going to the play area he informs me he pooped in his pants.Kids around his age or a little older were staring at him because he obviously smelled. I let him know nicely that he needed to tell me when he has to go potty otherwise the other children will smell him and say something. It upset him and rightf...

Potty training is an exciting milestone for some families. In mine, for my first born it was an exciting time. I was looking forward to her being in panties and us getting to do more things outside of home. We could save money by no longer buying pull ups.For some though, potty training puts a strain on the family. Moms and dads want their child potty trained Now leaving them with very little to no patience for resistance. My second child I thought would potty train on time. I bought him a small potty and he used it to go pee. Then some major transitions struck our household and he went backwards.A year and a half of potty training went by and I was frustrated, humiliated and at wits end. He was nearing his fourth birthday plus Headstart Pre-K would not accept him unless he was potty trained. I felt hopeless for a time. I learned through this wonderful method I promote that however I am feeling so is my child. I learned some very, very simple techniques that helped me get my son pot...

What do you do when a child who has been potty training successfully suddenly starts wetting and/or soils their pants? If you are currently potty training and you start relying on your child to let you know they need to use the potty this is a big issue. While you are working on potty training it is best for the parent to be taking their child to the potty every time.Honestly I am amazed at the amount of parents who decide to start relying on their child telling them they need to go potty whether it is during the potty training process or right after they have successfully accomplished it.My youngest son Hunter will be turning 4 in two weeks. Almost six months ago he potty trained yet I still have to remind or take him most of the time. Granted he is getting better telling me he has to go. According to my friend Janice who has worked with preschoolers for nearly 25 years now, expecting a child to tell you they have to go potty or them going on their own is a high expectation. Working...

Is my child ready for potty training?I often get asked this question by parents all over the world. It really depends on your child's readiness for potty training. Some children can potty train around 18 months while it may take another year or even two years for some children to get potty trained.Parents must also be up to the challenges that can occur with potty training. If you are getting ready for a big transition within a few months you must know that it is going to take a lot of consistency and dedication even after you get your child successfully potty trained to keep it going successful. Having a baby, moving, a parent taking on a new job or even the death of a loved one can throw a child's behavior off siginificantly.Parents often email me telling me their child was potty training wonderfully until dad or even mom took on a new job. Or moms are expecting a baby within the next few months and they want their child out of diapers or pull ups. If you are stressed, tense or f...

The greatest feeling a parent can have is the relief when their child has potty trained. No more diapers and more freedom for everyone. But getting there can be a real challenge. Potty training is best to be started when the child begins to show interest in the potty. This can be wanting their diaper changed after peeing or pooping. The child can also be telling you they need to go or they want to try out the potty. Allow your child to get used to the potty by just sitting on it. In fact, let it sit in front of the tv when they are watching their favorite show or movie. Give them something to do for entertainment. Once you get them accustomed to the potty then begin to do it on a consistent basis. It's easier to get a child potty trained when both parents and child are relaxed and enthusiastic about the entire process. The more ready and motivated they are the faster the process can be achieved successfully.

You can potty train your child in ONE weekend. Your child has to be ready and you, the parent has to also be ready. Potty training is a very important milestone in a child's development. They are transitioning from wearing a diaper to wearing panties or underwear and using the potty on their own.For some, this can be a scary transition. Start out small and add steps gradually. Use positive reinforcement in potty training. Give treats for making an effort and a reward for successfully using the potty.Even when a child has an accident remember they are learning. Punishing them is going to result in resistance. They will be afraid to try to go potty again which is a huge setback. Always be sure to reassure the child that you love them and to try again. Have them help you clean the mess up after a potty accident.Potty training takes dedication meaning one must be consistent with it to be successful. Our blogs discuss potty training experiences and include helpful tips. One of the most important issues parents must be aware of is whenever you are going through a major transition your children do feel the way you are whether they show it or not.Today I am asked a question by a parent who is in the military and often travels. The child is picking up on the anxiety and resisting going to the potty. He is crying out in a way most adults do not do.I often cringe when parents tell me they have disciplined their child during the potty training process. This is the worst thing a parent can do. Potty training is very important in a child's development. What happens can last a lifetime in a child. I recommend creating a healthy, positive environment for potty training. If a child is not quite ready then hold off. Both child and parent have to be ready for potty training to be quick and successful. It is possible to have a child potty trained in one weekend. It takes both child and parent to be ready for the big transition. Our e-book is designed for the fast...

It's all about having a positive attitude. I'm talking about potty training. As a child's development expands whatever they are exposed to gets absorbed. This is why so many doctors and psychologists say the first few years of a child's life can make or break them. Their brains are developing at a fast pace.Potty training is an important part of that development. The way a parent reacts to the potty training process can make the difference in potty training quickly or have a long delay causing more frustration and even anger. So many parents now days are having to work just to make a living. This leaves very little time for one to potty train their child. Thus, they leave it up to a babysitter or daycare provider which can be successful or not. There are parents who have a deadline to get their child potty trained in order to be accepted into preschool or stay at their current daycare. This alone can leave a parent extremely pressured and tense. Children will and do pick up on th...

Potty training is an important part of a child's development. Children develop at different times and thus, they potty train at different times as well.If a child has not potty trained before age four they should be tested for any developmental delays.Children potty train between age 2 and 3 1/2 although some can potty train successfully as early as 18 months. Potty training successfully depends on the readiness of the child and parents. Parents have to also be prepared to work on potty training. With the e-book pottytrainingsite.com created, it thoroughly describes to parents how to be prepared, why you should be prepared and when to go for potty training. The book is intended for parents and children who are ready to potty train although it can be used at a slow pace for others just wanting to try potty training.

Is my child ready for potty training? How do I start potty training? These are just two of the most common questions I often get from parents.Around the age of 18 months some children will go through the I-want-to-be-naked-and-without-a-diaper phase. They'll potty anywhere but the diaper or the potty itself. This is okay because it is a normal part of development. They are becoming more aware of their bodily functions with some they don't exactly like. So the best thing a parent can do is direct their child to a positive, alternate way of dealing with the bodily functions. Introduce them to the potty just by encouraging them to try it. Make a big deal out of it in a very excited way. Nudge them if you have to.Of course there may be potty training accidents here and there. Potty training is a very important part of the development in a child. They are learning and parents, care providers as well as any other important people in their life are the teachers. Be creative with potty trai...

Potty training problems

I often get asked a very common potty training problem question: Why does my child pee in the potty but not poop? They have tried for months if not a year to get their child to use the potty for both peeing and pooping. There are some valid reasons for a child refusing to poop in the potty. When a child is still wearing a diaper or even a pull up and they poop it is close to them. They don't have to worry about it falling into some scary thing (the potty). Sitting on the potty can be scary enough for some children which is why I recommend starting out with the small potty. If there have been any traumatic experiences such as constipation pooping in anything else than a comforting diaper is going to result in resistance.  If a child has had physical complications such as a deformed anus or even born with out one and had to have surgery this can also pose an issue. The most important thing parents must remember is Be patient, encouraging and understanding. Find creative ways to keep yo...

Lately I have been getting questions from parents regarding pooping in the potty. It seems their child will go pee pee but not pooping. This is quite common in children. There can be many factors though. One, a child has been in a diaper since birth. When they poop it stays next to their skin. Transitioning from the diaper to using the potty can be an overwhelming experience. The potty can be scary too. Also, some children experience painful or traumatic bowel movement incidents. This can leave a lasting impression on them. I dealt with the doesn't want to poop in the potty problem mostly with my middle child. What I did was let my son take his favorite toy with him to the potty which at that time was Blue from Blue's Clues. Within a few days I was able to get better cooperation with him. I also recommend utilizing a consistent schedule taking him or her to the potty as often as you can such as every hour. Be creative in ways to keep your child occupied and entertained because chil...

Potty Training Problems

I still remember so much about the problems I faced with potty training my middle child and oldest son Caleb over three years ago in 2006.I had tried to potty train him since the year prior. Everything had been going great. We went and purchased a potty and he was showing interest in using it. Then I lost my job, found out I was expecting another baby and his father and I separated. I was very stressed out. It was hard to deal with an unplanned pregnancy and a toddler who didn't want to potty train. I thought I had enough time though to recover from the stresses in my life to work on potty training Caleb. However, it wasn't that easy. I tried several times inconsistently to work on potty training. As he got older it was getting more frustrating. Then I had the baby and Caleb wanted to also be the baby.  It even got to the point of pressure from friends and family besides the embarassment of having neighbor children come to my door telling me Caleb had messed in his pants. I was beg...
