2nd Annual Juice Fast (Feast) Day 1, Post 1
2008-02-15 17:55:00
It has been nearly a year since my first juice feast which lasted 21 days. This year I have set a goal of 60 days if my body allows. This time around I will be incorporating more dark greens in hopes of making it the entire 60 days. Like last year, I agree to stop this feast if I feel that my body has had enough and I will be grateful for the lasting benefits that this fast will provide, regardless of the length. My next post will recap today’s juice intake and thoughts. Subscribe to the feed if you want to come along on this year’s journey!

Keep on going
2007-08-12 03:26:00
The one thing I have learned over the past few years is that shaking the diet mentality can be really hard. Especially when you were raised by two parents who based so much of their value as humans on how they looked. More often than not, it is a lifelong process to undo this damage. For me, it is something that has been a work in progress. Sometimes when I look back and see how far I have come, I don’t feel it is enough. I teeter on the old ways of thinking, “if I could only…”, or “tomorrow I am going to…” But most days I am proud of the changes I have made, and even more so because they ARE gradual. They do not provide instant gratification like my old Diet Coke starvation diets in my 20’s, but they are lifestyle changes that I have now incorporated into my life, and unlike any fad diet, these are REAL changes that continue to transform me and move me in a positive direction. Today, I am giving myself a hug because I have made ...

Once you fall off, it is hard to get back on.
2007-08-12 02:46:00
What a struggle it has been over this summer to get back to eating raw. The kids are home from school, there is food flying all over the place (ok, not literally) and I am having a tough time getting back on track. I feel like shit an I am ready to surrender myself to the raw gods. LOL! Over the last week, our family has talked about eating better and changing our mindset to include a healthier diet for the remainder of the summer and the upcoming school year. My son (almost eight) initiated this change by asking for tofu and wondering why we don’t eat “healthy” anymore. When kids are asking to eat healthier, this is a serious sign that things are our of control. In addition, my son was raised vegan for his first few years of life and always returns to this comforting way when change is brewing. With school just around the corner, there is plenty to be nervous about.

Juicing again - mini feast
2007-05-10 18:03:00
It has been a while since I posted. We have moved to a new home and have been very busy with that. Now that things have settled a bit, I thought it was a good time to do a mini juice feast for a few days, to cleanse and get focused again on what makes me feel good. Being fairly new to a raw lifestyle, it was too difficult to maintain this throughout the process of packing and moving our house of six. The really nice thing though is that I am very aware of raw food and I try to eat it as often as possible. When we were moving we tended to do a lot of fast food, so I chose salads, even if they weren’t 100% raw instead of fries or a burger. During this time, I did discover that eating some cooked foods does not necessarily make me feel bad, but I do know that eating wheat, dairy and soy is something that really bothers me. I feel bloated, my abdomen is distended and hurts. This is no way to live, so I am convinced once again, that I MUST avoid these foods, not that there were a...

Still raw and going strong
2007-03-19 16:18:00
I have continued to drink juice to start each day and have found that it really helps me not only get in my greens, but also carries me through the day with greater energy and strength. I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity to experience this as it has been life changing for me. Since ending my juice fast, I have managed to stay raw and it actually has been quite easy. I am constantly surrounded with SAD food, but it does not bother me. I feel so good that I have no desire to eat it at this point. I finally received a couple uncookbooks that I wanted, RAWvolution and Raw Food/Real World. I highly recommend both of these books to anyone new or established in the raw lifestyle. I have been whipping out many recipes in attempt to find some weekly staples that will make planning easier. I made a delicious Mock Tuna Salad yesterday. It was really good! I could almost convince myself that it tasted like the real thing. Since my twin daughters do not care for milk of any kin...

Salt Sucks
2007-03-15 15:18:00
Today I feel bloated! I have had waaaay too much salt in a very short time, since returning to solid food. What a difference. My face is puffy and I feel it all over my body. I am going to really watch the salt intake and choose raw recipes and simple foods that do not need salt or Braggs to please my palate. I am starting out the day with a cleansing juice to get back in sync. I did not realize that sodium had that great of an effect on me and I really don’t like the feeling.

Asian “Stir Fry” Vegetables
2007-03-14 16:04:00
INGREDIENTS 1/2 large onion, sliced thinly 1 red bell pepper, sliced thinly 1 hot pepper, sliced thinly (optional) 1/4 cup finely ground flax seed 1/4 cup Braggs 1/4 cup raw agave nectar 2 T cold pressed olive oil 1 clove garlic 1 slice of ginger DIRECTIONS Blend braggs, agave, oil, garlic, ginger until smooth. Pour dressing over vegetables in large bowl and mix well, making sure the vegetables are completely covered. Sprinkle ground flax seed over vegetable mixture and toss to evenly cover. Lay out on dehydrator sheets and dehydrate at 110-115 degrees for approximately 8-14 hours. Serve over sprouted buckwheat, vegetable noodles or eat as is. You can make double the dressing and pour over the top, to jazz it up even further. This works with many types of vegetables so have fun experimenting. © s.alubrio.us

“Solid”tude
2007-03-14 15:02:00
This was the second day since breaking my juice fast and today, I could definitely feel myself making up for lost time. I was not necessarily hungry, but had a strong urge to nibble throughout the day. I just went with what I was feeling. This will not be my normal mode, but I thought that I deserved a day just to ‘BE’ without putting much thought into it. Today I’ve had: 1/4 cup sprouted buckwheat topped with Asian vegetables and braggs 2 raw corn tortillas 1 collard green leaf “chip” (dehydrated with braggs and agave) Handful of baby carrots Celery stalk 10 oz watermelon juice

Juice Feast: Day 22
2007-03-14 03:25:00
Today was the day that I decided to break my fast since I have continued to feel worse over the past 5 days. It was a difficult decision but my body was screaming at me to take a break. I have felt very down today as I returned to eating solid, almost sad, but tonight I am definitely on the rebound and feeling really good. I am continuing on the raw path so you all can look forward to more recipes! I definitely don’t feel that I am done cleansing, so I plan to do another fast soon. Maybe even 62 days if my body will allow me. In the mean time, I will continue to cleanse through raw food and trying to keep my diet simple with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I will also continue to blog about my raw journey as well as post all the recipes that I have created! The one thing that I want to say is that how we feel while fasting is much more important than any goal or number we set. If your body says it is time to stop, listen! You can always fast again. Today I’ve had...

Juice Feast: Day 21
2007-03-13 03:10:00
I am sitting at the computer drinking my juice and seem to be having a strong reaction to beets. I have never had them in my life, so I had no idea. I added only a small slice to my juice because I know that they are powerful, but did not expect my mouth/tongue to burn and my whole face to go numb. It is actually a little freaky. My throat does not feel like it is closing or anything at this point, so I think I will be OK. This is the first time that I have experienced any kind of strange reaction during this juice feast, but I guess we should always pay attention when trying new foods.   This morning I did a swf to see if I would feel better. It helped 100%. I have not been paying close enough attention to my elimination and this is a big mistake. So, another thing I am going to work on is making sure that I am flushing enough to get rid of the toxins. Today I’ve had: 192 oz 48 oz carrot, beet, parsley, ginger and lemon (won’t do that again) 24 oz lemondae 24 oz lem...

Juice Feast: Day 20
2007-03-12 03:14:00
We went to the zoo today with the Grandparents so it was a bit strange being out all day without access to fresh juice. I had organic apple juice and tea at the restaurant while everyone feasted on soup and sandwiches. It was OK though. I think that it was harder for them to eat in front of me than it was for me to watch them eat. With four kids, barely a minute goes by each day where I am not dealing with food in some way. I am feeling a bit off and I am wondering if my body is telling me that this fast needs to come to an end. I am going to give it a couple more days and see if I pull through this phase. I am adding more green powder with spirulina and chlorella to my diet and will see if it helps, but if this continues, I will need to listen to my body and maybe save the 62 day fast for the near future. I would not look at it as a failure, because I will have made the choice based on what my body is telling me and not because I gave in to some instant gratification like a giant...

Juice Feast: Day 19
2007-03-11 05:38:00
Since I normally do not have my first juice of the day until noon, I have found it harder to get in the gallon before 8 pm at night. But I believe this is why I have started to have a lot of hunger the past few days. I have definitely been drinking more water and less juice, but today I changed that. The hunger was gone and I feel much better. It is obvious that the extra 24-48 oz of juice in a day really makes all the difference and this will allow me to continue. Today I’ve had: 138 oz 8 oz senna leaf tea 10 oz water with barley grass powder 24 oz celery, broccoli, parsley and carrots 24 oz cucumber, broccoli, kale, sweet hot pepper and apple 12 oz water with barley grass powder 24 oz lemonade 24 oz watermelon 12 oz water

Juice Feast: Day 18
2007-03-10 06:48:00
Here is a before and now photo of me from this morning. Crazy the difference in under 20 days and only 13 pounds! It definitely shows that more than just weight loss occurs during a fast. I am no longer bloated from eating all those toxic foods and really do look like a different person. I feel so light and free. I still have a ways to go as far as weight is concerned, but this is a great start! I think the side view would have been good, but at the time we took the before picture, I refused. I was just too embarassed (does this come from someone being caught with their pants down? Heh Em bare ass? Things that make you go hmmm). But to give you an idea, I have lost a total of 7 inches from my waist and maybe another 7 from my neck (Just kidding)! It is hard to tell from the picture with the straight on shot, but I have lost a bunch o’ inches from my hips too. Juice Rocks! Today I’ve had: 128 oz (1 gallon) 48 oz celery, carrot, pear and parsley 36 oz broccoli, celery,...

Juice Feast, Day 17
2007-03-08 15:48:00
It has been quite the evening. It started last night with intense hunger and then continued throughout the day today. Then, the pizza my family ordered was looking extremely tempting. It was the closest I have been to caving during this process. Most of it was the fact that I was SO dang hungry. I finally decided to go to bed rather than fight with myself. The new day always looks different. On a positive note, I have discovered something really interesting for myself. The days that I do not include hemp oil in my diet, my weight loss is significantly less, if any at all. I have tested this theory several times and each time I have the exact same results. If I do not have any, I may be down one ounce at most but normally stay the same weight. If I do include hemp oil the day prior, I am down around a pound. I now TRULY believe that including fats in the diet is key to losing weight. I have read it over and over that we must include healthy fats in our diet, and now agree 100%. It ...

Juice Feast: Day 16
2007-03-07 15:55:00
I fell short of my gallon yesterday, mostly because I ran out of things to juice. Last night we went to the store and I am all stocked up now with some much missed celery, star fruit, galia melon and other goodies. It is day 16, and it is hard to believe that I have made it this far. It is even harder to believe that I have stayed true to juice without even a sneak of solid food. The crazy thing about a juice fast is the things you learn about yourself and your habits. It really is not as hard as we think to give up the things we grow accustom to. This is the first time since I was pregnant with the twins (over four years ago), that I have not cracked open a beer on Friday (and usually Saturday) night. I thought that this would be the hardest, but it actually isn’t, it’s merely a passing thought. When I think of the taste of beer right now it does no appeal to me and I can honestly say that I have lost my taste for it at the moment. I have heard at lot of people say, &l...

Juice Feast: Day 15
2007-03-07 05:19:00
On my morning walk, I was floating down my happy little juice stream and suddenly I pass a house that is spewing smells of roasted poultry, like the smells from your Grandma’s house on Thanksgiving. I immediately started thinking about a life without the traditional things I’ve grown to love. Sure, I have spent holidays enjoying nontraditional foods like tofurky, but raw seems different. At that point, I did the only thing that made sense to me, allow myself to make that choice when the time comes, and worry about today for now. I am feeling so great and the weight is melting off, so today juice is the best choice for me. When I am finished with my juice fast, it may be 100% raw, and when the holidays come around again, I have a feeling that it will be much easier to make the choices that feel good for me in the long term. Today I’ve had: 132 oz 24 oz kale, carrot, apple and lemon 48 oz watermelon juice 60 oz water

Juice Feast: Day 14
2007-03-06 05:45:00
It has been two weeks since I began this journey and it has been much easier than I expected. I am feeling really good with only short periods of detoxing now. Some days my tongue is very coated and others it is a healthy pink. I have tons of energy, but am still struggling with some muscle aches and pains every few days, which tells me there is more work to be done. I am free from the abdominal pain that I have been living with for nearly two years, my sinuses are clear for the first time in my life and I no longer have joint pain. I am more determined than ever to continue this juice feast until I feel that I am completely cleansed. As for weight loss, I am down 11.2 pounds since begining the juice feast, which brings my total loss since going raw and eliminating both wheat and soy to, 23.4 pounds. Pretty good for never feeling hungry! Today I’ve had: 132 oz 24 oz celery, broccoli, carrot, mango and hemp oil 24 oz spinach, apple and lemon 24 oz lemondae 60 oz water

Juice Fasting Supplements
2007-03-05 19:00:00
Here is an explanation of some of the supplements I include in my raw diet and especially during a long term juice fast: Spirulina, barley grass, dulse and hemp oil. PURPLE DULSE Palmaria Palmata A.K.A.: Sea vegetable, sea weed. PROPERTIES: Alterative, Anti-rheumatic, Demulcent, Diuretic, Emollient, Expectorant, Mucilant, Nutritive, Stimulant, Tonic. Dulse has been used as food by Northern European coastal peoples for millennia. Seaweeds are the richest source of assimilable minerals on the planet. After nori, dulse is the highest in protein of the popular sea vegeatables; Maine Coast and Nova Scotia dulse tested at 22% protein. As its rust-red color suggests, dulse is very high in iron. Dulse contains many easily assimilated minerals and trace elements. Maine Coast and Nova Scotia dulse tested high in B6 and B12 vitamins. Although dulse tastes very salty, the Maine Coast dulse tested relatively low in sodium (1740mg/100g) and high in potassium (7820mg/100g). ...
