Right use of Power: Ethics as Soul Work
2008-01-09 07:25:00 A GoodTherapy.org Featured Column written by Cedar Barstow, M.Ed., C.H.T. Click here to contact Cedar and/or see her GoodTherapy.org Profile Ethics as Soul Work I slept and dreamt that life was joy; I awoke and saw that life was service; I acted and behold, service was joy. –Rabindranath Tagore I appreciate your interest in using your personal and professional power with wisdom and compassion. I think of ethics as right use of power. In fact, right use of power and influence is the biggest container for ethics since it includes social consciousness and personal development. In this greatest context, it is about reverence for life, treating all people with respect, and acting honorably. It requires a high level of consciousness development and understanding of both harm and empowerment. This context for ethics includes and honors the value of prescribed codes and guidelines and goes beyond into the realm of repairing harm, restoring relationships, and promoting well-being. E... Survivor Guilt
2008-01-09 02:36:00 Written by Mitchell Milch, LCSW Click here to contact Mitchell and/or see his GoodTherapy.org Profile On the evening of the 6th anniversary of 9/11 I watched the heart wrenching television images of children of those whose lives were tragically taken on that ill fated morning in 2001. These images stirred me to write about the topic of survivor guilt that is never too far from my heart as a psychotherapist and an American Jew. One doesn’t have to lose a loved one to a tragic and unnecessary death to suffer survivor guilt. This symptom for lack of a better description is a recipe for chronic unhappiness. It is in simplest terms feeling guilty about being happy with one’s lot in life. It is not necessarily induced by the experience of a tragic loss of a parent or parental surrogate. It is nonetheless, the legacy of what I do consider to be tragedies if the victims do not get help in adulthood to treat their problems. They are tragedies because generations of family member... Why Diets Don’t Work
2008-01-07 03:47:00 Written by Anne Cuthbert, M.A. LPC Click here to contact Anne and/or see her GoodTherapy.org Profile I love peanut butter. As a kid, I used to eat it out of the jar, spoon first. Although I grew out of the spoon phase, I still love it with bread and honey, with chocolate and in nearly any candy bar. What I never did know about my love for peanut butter, is that it made me sick. I was so out of touch with my body and the effect of food on my body that I never realized that the sick feeling in my stomach was the result of the food I just ate. It took time of working on my food and body issues to put it together and even longer to realize that my tummy rejects peanut butter only when I have eaten more than my body can handle. This is good to know because now, when I get that sick feeling, I just stop eating peanut butter for a while and then I can eat it again. Of course, I always have the choice to eat it, and sometimes I do choose it, even when I know I may not like how I feel later... More About: Diets , Work
Futurist Therapy: What role will therapy have in a post-human future?
2008-01-06 05:20:00 A GoodTherapy .org Featured Column written by Greg Madison, Ph.D. Click here to contact Greg and/or see his GoodTherapy.org Profile. In this article I would like to suggest that the time has come for psychotherapy to begin to contemplate the future. Not from the standpoint of current theory and contemporary debates regarding research and practice, arguments that are thickly stewed in mental health politics and the profit considerations of private health companies. Rather, I believe that psychotherapists may need to consider their professional role from a future point of view in order to contemplate what function, if any, we should have in the biotechnological revolution forecast to commence within the next few decades. If the futurists are correct, then ten years from now the most intractable issues that mental health professionals grapple with today will in retrospect be totally superfluous. The world is bracing for an exponential advance in technologies that are predicted to funda... More About: Future , Post , Human , Role

2008-01-05 04:32:00 A GoodTherapy.org Featured Column written by Dennis Thoennes, Ph.D., ABPP Click here to contact Dennis and/or see his GoodTherapy.org Profile On the way home from a visit with my mother I felt myself roiling like molten lava. She began talking about money she had recently lent me to help with the expense of a remodeling project. As she talked decades of anger began to ignite and I told her I needed to end this conversation or leave if she could not give it a rest. Fortunately it takes me a few hours to drive home from where she lives. I was able to contact a friend on the drive and debrief the experience I had with her and how it had summoned decades of anger. Years ago, when our kids were young and before I had done any of my own therapy, had something like this happened I would have walked into the house and this residue from the past would have spilled over the family and evening like hot tar on a fine linen tablecloth. Such awareness has led me to tell clients of my belief tha...

A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: The trauma underlying addiction
2008-01-04 02:00:00 Written by Sarah Jenkins, MC, LPC Click here to contact Sarah and/or see her GoodTherapy.org Profile Sit down, and let me tell you a story, a fable that tells of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It is a fable, written by Aesop, that you may be curious to learn, and can tell us of addiction’s common deceptions. Perhaps you will find the lesson in the beginning, or even at the end, but you will be curious about what you will soon learn, as you read on. “A wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to the vigilance of the shepherd and his dogs. But one day it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so the wolf put it on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep. A lamb began to follow the wolf in the Sheep’s clothing. So, leading the lamb a little apart, he soon made a meal of her. For some time he succeeded in deceiving the sheep, and enjoying hearty meals.” What’s Underneath: The Wolf (more…) More About: Clothing , Addiction , Trauma , Addict
Intimacy: What is it anyway?
2008-01-04 02:00:00 Written by Julienne B. Derichs LCPC We all have a picture of intimacy. Passionate sex, long talks where you reveal your inner most thoughts, and sharing life’s experiences. Creating intimacy in a relationship can seem mysterious and illusive. Most people want it, but what is intimacy really? Intimacy is not a concrete concept; it is a quality in a relationship that takes on many forms. The common thread being feelings of closeness among partners in a relationship. Intimacy and healthy relationships go hand in hand, yet everyone has different ideas about how intimacy is created. (more…)

Existential Migration
2007-12-27 15:30:00 A GoodTherapy.org Featured Column written by Greg Madison, Ph.D. Click here to contact Greg and/or see his GoodTherapy.org Profile Leaving home can be a traumatic and exciting experience, especially if we are leaving to live in a foreign country. Research into the experiences of voluntary migrants has unexpectedly revealed that some of these people are actually using migration to express a deeply felt existential need. These ‘existential migrants’ discover more about themselves and feel more alive when confronting unfamiliar cultures. But by repeatedly exposing themselves to a vast range of different people and foreign places they can consequently end up living with a feeling of not being at home anywhere. 2007-12-21 15:23:00 A GoodThera py .org Featured Column written by Greg Madison, Ph.D. Click here to contact Greg and/or see his GoodTherapy.org Profile “The Human Being of Therapy” is a column that explores topics from the point of view of the common existential dilemmas that we all grapple with in life. These brief articles emphasize a democratic client-therapist relationship in which both people open up to their struggles to meet and connect, and their failures to do so. Also, more general topics about psychotherapy and modern life will be presented in an attempt to understand their deeper significance. Topics will range from the impact of therapist self-disclosure to the significance of moving to another culture, from discussions of research in psychotherapy to a whimsical exploration of a human future not limited by mortality. The column will take a stance that diverges from contemporary society’s emphasis on ’scientific knowledge’ and the tendency to view life experiences as d...

Kaplan, MA, LAC, LISAC Click here to contact Debra and/or see her GoodTherapy.org Profile A glance at many magazines today will offer practical advice and “how to” strategies for the pursuit of the man or woman of our dreams. Let’s face it—sexy tag lines and catchy subtitles make for good print copy but do little for building healthy and sound relationships. Projecting our wants, expectations or intentions onto our partners-to-be only serves to foreshadow the inevitable relational demise. It is as if we build in our own obsolescence from the very start. How is that possible you may ask, “when I’m doing all the right things, paying close attention to selecting my partner, and looking at what he or she has to offer the relationship?” I admit that these words sound counter intuitive, however, first consider this proposition. Derichs, LCPC Click here to contact Julienne and/or see her Good Therapy.org Profile Why is it there are some couples who always butt heads…and other couples who get along with little friction? From early childhood we learn about conflict from our interactions with others. Our conflict management style begins to evolve through our unique experiences with others based on wants, needs, likes, and dislikes. Tension or conflict arises when we expect others to be like us and judge and blame each other for our differences. No matter what we call it—conflict, fighting, arguing, quarreling or disagreeing, in most relationships, differences eventually arise and for many of us it creates some uneasiness. But having the Good Fight , if handled well, can transform relationships and improve our understanding of each other. When managed badly, conflict can result in damaged friendships, severed relationships, and long-lasting hostility. Understanding Conflict Terry R... More About: Control , Out Of Control , The Good

While each model captures some of what might need to go on in psychotherapy at any given moment, the spiritual model is for me the most interesting and comprehensive.
