Chronic insomnia is more common than you might think: causes and solutions
2009-09-22 20:32:00
Modern life forces so many of us to live life in the fast lane, mentally and physically. Almost every one of us has more on our plate than can be accomplished in a 24-hour day. As a result, we try to offset the lack of available time with less relaxation, less sleep and very little exercise. The rationale is usually that, if we get everything on our to-do list accomplished, we'll have less worry, less stress, be more 'successful' and not have to feel guilty over tasks uncompleted. Can you relate to this scenario? Do you also suffer from chronic insomnia? The unfortunate fact is that this 'always running' strategy has a boomerang effect and is a good recipe for chronic insomnia. First, we'll take a look at some of the subsets of patterns that foster chronic insomnia and suggest a variety of solutions that may help you get out of this vicious circle. The 'busy mind' syndrome is characterized by worry and anxiety over situations or problems that won't let your mind stop rehashin...

Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine
2009-08-21 00:45:00
As the world becomes more dangerous, new and more terrifying health conditions rear their ugly head at every juncture. Modern medicine often doesn?t seem to be up to the task of dealing with these diseases, which have root causes that may be nutritional, environmental, or even psychological. Many people have started turning to the ancient ways of curing diseases, with herbal, natural, and Ayurvedic medicine. In this article, I will describe the principal tenets of Ayurvedic medicine so you can decide if it is right for you. As always, consult a doctor before embarking on a course of treatment on your own.Ayurvedic medicine was first documented in the Vedas, the ancient texts that describe life in pre-colonial India. Ayurveda literally translates as ?the science of life,? and remains an influential path of treatment in much of Southeast Asia to this day. The essential concept of Ayurvedic medicine teaches that the body is composed of seven principal substances, and a healthy individua...

Women's Hair Loss
2009-08-10 20:06:00
For the longest time, I thought I was dealing with women?s hair loss because I would find what looked like gobs of hair in my brush when I brushed my hair each day. It seemed like a huge amount of hair, but as time went on, I realized that it must not be as much as I thought because I have thick hair and it remains that way. There is no thinning or balding to be found. I wondered how I could lose so much hair without finding a bald spot or two, so I did a little research. As it turns out, we lose hundreds of hairs each day. To lose one or two hundred hairs a day is normal women?s hair loss. That is completely normal, but for most people, it is something that happens without notice. I notice my hair because it is blond and very curly. The pieces that fall out stay caught in the curls, and they all come out at once when I brush. Otherwise, I might not even notice what was going on. I do not have abnormal women?s hair loss, but that doesn?t mean there are not women who do.Women?s hair l...

2009-07-07 23:27:00
If you have ever had a panic attack, you know that these are absolutely without a doubt no fun. In fact, they can make you feel as if you are about to die and you have no idea what is happening.Even if you have gone through a string of them, you may still have no idea that one is coming on. Once you have had one, dealing with panic attacks is not going to be easy, but if you pay attention, there are some things you can do when you feel another coming up - once you realize you are prone to them, of course. Before you get begin dealing with panic attacks, you have to know what they are. There are many definitions, but one way you can look at it is rather simple and can be helpful when you feel another one forming. Your body is having a physical reaction to an irrational fear that is overcoming your mind. You may know your fear is irrational, but that does not stop it from happening. That does not make you crazy either, as some people fear. If you understand that when dealing with panic...

Caring for Elderly Parents
2009-06-25 17:32:00
It can be a rewarding mission, a two-way street filled with joy! When your parents grow old and are no longer able to adequately take care of themselves, there are a number of ways to deal with this natural development of aging. Too often, their grown children opt for a nursing home solution, even when they know their parents would prefer to stay in their own home, or perhaps move in with you. It's easy to rationalize this choice. Some kids of aging parents feel they're not qualified to give the proper time and care required in caring for elderly parents. Others feel that such an arrangement will eventually result in discordant relations among family members, or that their own hectic schedules will become unmanageably disrupted. What most people in this position fail to realize is that, instead of being a burden, caring for elderly parents can be a wonderful blessing. Many children of the elderly also end up feeling guilty, believing they just don't really want to provide the neces...

Try Hormone Free Replens Vaginal Moisturizer
2009-06-12 18:31:00
One of the most common symptoms of peri-menopause or menopause is feminine dryness. When estrogen levels decrease, the amount of vaginal lubrication naturally produced in the body also drops. Lower estrogen levels lead to a thinner, less elastic and more fragile vaginal lining.Whether mild or severe, it can be painful, cause constant discomfort and become severe if left untreated.Hormone replacement therapy is most often recommended for those undergoing menopause, but because most vaginal preparations are absorbed into the bloodstream, some women have concerns about the safety of estrogen and prefer alternative solutions. And, studies show that many of the women taking oral hormone therapy report that they sometimes still suffer from vaginal dryness. Women?s bodies change as they age, but one thing stays the same: sensitive vaginal areas must be kept moisturized to stay pliable, elastic and healthy. However, the Women?s Health Initiative study found that women taking a combination of ...

Living longer makes preventing wrinkles more important than ever!
2009-05-19 16:58:00
Any woman will tell you that preventing wrinkles is a primary beauty objective! Now that our life expectancy is going up, we certainly don't want to look like we're 90 by the time we're 70!Today, with global warming making our skin more vulnerable to the harmful UV rays, along with environmental pollution which damages skin, everyone should start taking steps in preventing wrinkles, sooner rather than later. Women aren't the only ones who worry. Men, too, are now paying closer attention to the appearance of the dreaded wrinkles, probably due to the life expectancy factor.Just twenty years ago, young women were not into skin and wrinkle reducing creams. Their still young and fresh looking skin was just fine, with nary a wrinkle to be seen. While Mom or Grandma might occasionally give a pep talk on 'taking care of your skin', girls considered face creams to be for 'old ladies' and spent their money on clothes and shoes instead. It was only for the 40+ set. Today, preventing wr...

Sex and the Menopause
2009-05-12 18:18:00
Referred to in hushed tones as ?the change? or dismissed as little more than a series of hot flushes, even in today?s liberal society the very word menopause is still somewhat taboo. Menopausal and post-menopausal women, their loved ones and even GPs are still reluctant to discuss the effects it can have on women?s love lives.New survey results[i] published recently in Menopause International*, however, reveal a genuine and pressing need to raise awareness of issues around the menopause and to banish misconceptions based on the cliché that women at certain stages of life would happily forsake sex for a nice cup of tea.The survey of 2,527 peri- and post-menopausal women ? conducted by the physician-led site https://mail.hostedexchange.com/exchweb/b in/redir.asp?URL=http://www.menopausematt ers.co.uk and now promoted by pure intimacy experts Yes (http://www.yestointimacy.com/) ? showed that 84 per cent of these felt that an active sex life was important: In other words, women who are go...
Easy Relaxation Tips for Busy Women
2009-05-05 02:26:00
It seems like there is no rest of the weary. And, the weary person is usually mom. Moms take care of hearth and home, but who takes care of her? If you are a busy mom, learn to value yourself as a person and schedule personal time.Personal time is a right of being a person. Each of us has the capacity to nurture others but that type of care takes its toll.A car is filled with gas to make it run. Eventually the gas runs out and your car won?t move unless the car is replenished with fuel. The same goes for you. Emotional issues can develop when you don?t take the time to take care of your emotional well-being, not to mention the physical results of emotional neglect.Mom time refuels the tank so that you can give to your family as well as yourself in equal measure. Don?t be ashamed to sit for fifteen minutes doing nothing. In the springtime, relaxing in a hammock under a tree is the perfect getaway from the pressures of the day. Reading a book for 30 minutes can also seem like heaven t...

How to Overcome Emotional Eating
2009-04-28 23:28:00
Eating is a part of life. Your body gets its nutrients from food. Sometimes we can go overboard with our eating habits and it can result in gaining weight. One issue with food is emotional eating. The problem of emotional eating may end with the scale but it begins in the mind. Stress takes its toll on your life. When your defenses are compromised your health takes a hit and so do your emotions.Everyone has good days and bad days. How we deal with the bad ones brings emotional eating into play. You look for comfort for your hurts. People who turn to food for comfort find a coping mechanism that won?t judge them, hurt them or tell them ?no.? To complicate the issue, eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just like exercise. So, after you eat, you feel better.Emotional eaters use food to relieve stress. They hide behind the food instead of seeking solutions to the problems. This is not uncommon when the stressor is something horrible such as physical abuse or ...

Menopause Timing can Affect Parkinsons Risk
2009-04-09 22:34:00
According to the latest research, women who count more years between their first period and menopause actually have a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease. These findings which appeared in a USA Today article by Mary Brophy Marcus, will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 61st annual meeting in Seattle in April. This research indicates that longer exposure to the body's own hormones may indeed help protect the brain cells which are affected by Parkinson's disease. The author of the study is Rachel Saunders-Pullman of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.read more

But, for today?s menopausal women, Not-So-Hot is exactly what we?re looking for. Imagine going through a meal with friends WITHOUT having a hot flash, or having coffee with the girls and not having to worry the hot coffee is going to make it worse. Let?s face it ? the beads of sweat are embarrassing. Thanks to two very smart and very HOT ladies, there may not be a cure to the hot flashes, but there certainly is a trendy answer? Not-So-Hot Flash Fans are true to their name. They provide cooling comfort in a flash. Now, that?s the kind of flash we?re looking for! These nylon, aerodynamically efficient fans fold up small in a stylish pouch to fit in a purse or back pocket. 2009-03-13 01:29:00
NiteSweatz, a line of solution-based lounge wear, day wear, gowns and cover-ups, made of technologically advanced moisture-wicking fabric, are designed to help women sleep more comfortably when experiencing hot flashes.?Night sweats and hot flashes happen when women produce less estrogen, the decrease in the amount of the hormone is the mechanism that triggers the response of sweating. As a result, women are always looking for ways to stay dry and cool - moisture wicking garments like NiteSweatz are clearly advantageous. The problem can also be addressed with medical management, soy products, alternative nutriceuticals and anti-depressants, but these alternatives are more costly and may cause side effects,? explains Dr. Jay Kulkin, founder and president of Women ?s Institute for Health?I hear from women everyday that NiteSweatz has stopped them from sweating. I simply say, we can?t change your hormones, but by preventing them from waking up in cold clammy jammies, they don?t realize t...

Another Menopausal Treatment Increases Risk of Cancer Recurreance
2009-02-20 02:23:00
On the heels of our report on concerns for increased risks of breast cancer from Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) comes new evidence that another option for treating menopausal symptoms, Livial (a synthetic hormone, with a generic formula known as Tibolone), may also raise the risk for breast cancer.Maybe hot flashes aren't so bad after all. Many women who experience the very bothersome side effects of menopause are looking for options to help relieve their symptoms. However, over the last few weeks we have seen reports that are very disturbing regarding the chances of breast cancer being elevated in women who try to ward off menopausal symptoms.HRT, and now Livial, a synthetic steroid also used to treat menopausal symptoms, has been shown to significantly increase the odds of breast cancer recurrence. Researchers halted the study six months early due to the drastically increased risk of recurrent breast cancer found while studying women who were taking Tibolone. The recently rele...

Sex among Seniors
2009-02-09 18:08:00
I don?t know why ?some people? in the USA are surprised to know that those over the age of 65 still ?have sex.? What were they thinking? Do ?some people? really believe that the need and desire for sex suddenly evaporates when you hit a certain age? They shouldn?t; history has proven otherwise. It isn?t only the young who are restless. A gynecologist in Victorian England recorded that ?ladies, well past their child-bearing years, make their spouses very happy by continuing to be available for intimate pleasures. Sexual activity is even more pleasurable because there is no longer a worry about an unplanned pregnancy.?The sky it seemed was the limit then. Imagine what it is like now as the Boomer generation of the sixties is healthier and more active in all areas of their lives including sex.Read more

Rapid menopause can increase the risk of heart disease
2009-02-06 00:30:00
A study conducted by the Los Angeles Atherosclerosis of 203 women between the ages of 45 and 60 determined that those who transitioned from being premenopausal to fully postmenopausal within three years had a greater buildup of fatty plaque in their carotid arteries. This placed them at an increased risk for a higher rate of "preclinical atherosclerosis" ? the narrowing of arteries due to thickening of their artery walls.Of the 203 women, 52 were premenopausal, 20 were perimenopausal and 131 were postmenopausal. None had prior cardiac disease. The participants were first evaluated as they entered the study, then again at two 18-month intervals. Evaluations were not made using such subjective factors as hot flashes, but rather on carotid intimal-media thickness (cIMT) measurements and objective measures of menopausal status based on hormone levels and physiologic changes."We know that more fatty plaque accumulation predicts future heart attacks and strokes, but this is our first vent...

Bio-Identical Hormones, Oprah and Some Important Facts
2009-02-06 00:28:00
(We recently asked Sangeeta Pati, FACOG to reflect on the impact of Oprah 's recent shows on HRT and give us her thoughts on bio-identical hormones. Dr. Patti will be presenting an important workshop addressing hormone therapy at the upcoming 17th World Congress on Anti-Aging Medicine in Orlando this spring. At the conference doctors can also commence their Anti-Aging Board Certification training.)Logic dictates that human identical, bio-identical products are the only acceptable products when we are restoring hormones or nutrients. Why use a product that acts like the real thing when you can get the real thing? Oprah's show brings to the forefront of discussion the real need to help women (and I should add men) who suffer from symptoms and the real need for people to continue their quest for better health and options.I would like to comment on three issues that came up during Oprah's recent show on hormone replacement therapy:1. Risk in women? When women consider hormone replacem...

Synthesized viper venom provides a promising new antidote to wrinkles
2009-02-02 19:41:00
The primary ingredient in the new face cream is a synthetic version of the poisonous venom from the Temple Viper , a distance cousin of the rattlesnake commonly found in Thailand. According to the manufacturer, amino acids in the venom block nerve signals telling face muscles to contract. This helps stop wrinkles from forming. Snake venom has already been used in a lip-gloss called Lip Venom , which its manufacturer Du Wop says ?plumps out the lips.? As Dr. Aamer Khan, Medical Director of the Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic in London, notes: ?This could work for somebody who doesn't want injections. The effects are not going to be as dramatic as with Botox. It will also need to be reapplied as the body gets rid of it quickly.? The new face cream, which is sold in 30 ml pots that last about 30 days, has already become a best seller at the upscale British department store chain of Selfridges & Co. And as reported in the Daily Telegraph, Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is a ?devotee? of t...

Important Testosterone Information
2009-01-29 18:58:00
Although it?s normal for testosterone levels to drop as men age, low testosterone can affect a man?s health. In many ways, testosterone is the stuff that makes men men. The rush of new testosterone in puberty builds muscle and bone, deepens the voice, and revs up the sex drive. Throughout a man?s life, testosterone maintains his male characteristics.Testosterone levels start to decline at age 30 and decline steadily after age 40. The decline averages about 1% to 2% per year. By middle age and older, virtually all men experience some decline in testosterone. A certain percentage of aging men have testosterone levels far below those considered normal for their age.Is this low testosterone part of normal aging? Is low testosterone a medical problem that needs treatment? The answer is yes and yes. Most men with symptoms of low testosterone will get some benefit from treatment (testosterone replacement therapy or TRT).What is Low Testosterone? In our practice, low testosterone is defined a...
