Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader Protests Big Oil
2008-05-19 14:13:00
Ralph Nader and his team will be protesting oil industry speculation, manipulation, and conglomeration of our gas prices. You’ll see Mr. Nader and his team May 20, ’08 out at the American Petroleum Institute in Washington, D.C. Why? If you haven’t heard, it is not just Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain running for President . Ralph Nader is too. Nader’s campaign pledge in regard to the oil industry, “ In recent years, the big five oil companies - ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, BP and Shell - have booked record profits - a big chunk of which result from oil industry market manipulation and anti-competitive practices. (For example, oil companies have exploited their market position to intentionally restrict refining capacity by driving smaller, independent refiners out of business.) Nader/Gonzalez would strictly regulate the oil industry - clamping down on speculators and enforcing the antitrust laws. Nader/Gonzalez would also revo...

Guest Blogger Linda Spangle-- A TRUE STORY:Carol dreaded Mother 's Day. Last year, as the holiday was approaching, she told me that she anticipated the same story as always. Her three grown kids would be extremely busy and wrapped up in their own lives. If she was lucky, she might get a couple of cards, although they'd probably arrive a day late. What Carol really yearned for each year was that her kids would call and actually wish her a happy day. But... they rarely did. Typically, as the day wore on with no word from the kids, Carol's anger and resentment would grow. Eventually she'd start digging through the refrigerator for something to help her forget that her children were so "selfish and ungrateful." As we talked, Carol began to see that she was ov...

Support Breast Cancer Research
2008-05-02 19:09:00
Breast cancer is a family disease. I experienced this first hand when I lost my mother to breast and cervical cancer when I was 16 years old. Her death knocked me off my feet and in some ways I am still dealing with that loss today. Most of you know me as an actor on television, but I think the most important role I play is that of breast cancer activist. As we approach Mother's Day, I am reminded of the pain and the uncertainty of this disease and how the loss of our mother affected me and my sisters. I am also reminded of what a remarkable woman my mother was. I cannot think of a better way to honor her than by working toward a world without breast cancer. Legislation has been introduced in Congress for a Mother's Day commemorative coin. A portion of the proceeds from this coin will benefit breast cancer research. Will you join me in the fight against breast cancer by letting Congress know how important this issue is to you?In the United States, one woman will be diagnosed with br...

Genetic Nondiscrimination Bill Passes The Senate!
2008-04-26 00:37:00
Last week we told you about GINA – the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act – which if passed would make it illegal to discriminate based on genetic information. This protection is critical, since testing for a specific genetic mutation commonly associated with breast cancer can lead to early detection and treatment – saving countless lives. Now we have great news. More than 16,000 of you sent letters to your Senators in support of GINA, and it paid off! Thanks to your support, the Senate unanimously passed GINA last night (Thursday, April 25) and now the bill just needs approval from the House and the signature of the President – both of which are expected to happen quickly.GINA prohibits discrimination by health insurers and employers on the basis of genetic information. So now, thanks to GINA, women who would otherwise have avoided genetic testing because they feared discrimination – thus being denied information that could help them manage their...
