She is a practicing psychologist, researcher, and lecturer. Her latest book, Be Happy Without Being Perfect (Crown) was released on March 4, 2008.Guest Blogger Alice Domar--Why do you think that women feel such pressure to be perfect?I think a lot of the pressure comes from the media. You can’t pick up a woman’s magazine that doesn’t have the entire cover dedicated to making you better- “How to have more quality time with your kids," “be sexier in bed," “get more done at work," “the best tasting cupcakes are only a mixing bowl away," “how to exercise more and sleep less," etc. Why is there never a tagline tha...

Who's Winning the Race --Online?
2008-03-24 13:36:00
As an online publisher, I regularly contact authors I feel the public may want to hear from.  Recently, my office emailed individual invitations to Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama , and Senator John McCain , inviting each Presidential candidate to blog about how he or she will change healthcare in the United States after he or she becomes President.Though not enough time has elapsed to allow for a personal response from each Senator, my office has received a thank you email from the offices of both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton.  The Obama reply was personalized using my first name, whereas Clinton's said, "Dear Friend." Senator McCain's office has sent nothing.  This is the last we've heard from Clinton as well, but Obama's office has continued to generate email messages about the purpose of his campaign: the two-front challenge the Senator is facing, the big endorsement he's received fr...

I'm terrified at the prospect of another president who places corporate interests far above citizens' interests and way way way ahead of environmental interests.I want a democrat yes, but this election has much more at stake then that. Pancreatic Cancer Will Cause Diabetes
2008-03-18 20:10:00
In a few days, I will be sitting at the dinner table enjoying a holiday dinner--minus my father.  A year ago February, Dad was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer; he hadn't planned for this, and frankly told me that he always thought he'd have a stroke or heart attack.  (A colonoscopy one year prior had come out clean.) Life often throws us curve balls which we can either duck to try to avoid or catch them full force. Recently, I reluctantly read the story of Patrick Swayze and his stoic wife Lisa, knowing how they might feel about this difficult situation. Dad and I faced his illness honestly.  We knew the outlook was very grim.  During my search for a medical cure, I did find hope.  We located at least three individuals with the disease intact within the pancreas (it hadn't metastasized or spread to other organs), who were still alive after four or five years. While cancer death rates have declined, pancreatic cancer deaths have in...

10 Tips For Greener Living
2008-03-15 21:55:00
My ancestors traveled from Ireland to Ellis Island in the midst of the potato famine.  After acquiring wagons, they traveled west to Northern Ohio, and then later during my great grandmother's generation, farther north into Southern Michigan where farming was good and land was cheap.  They brought with them the tradition of living green, right off their soil!  My father, born and raised on a farm, slopped hogs, picked wild dandelion greens for his mother, and helped his father deliver milk to the neighbors--from a wagon. Today, the thought of living green comes unnaturally, as it has been removed by conveniences of modern life for at least two or more generations. A current hot and growing trend is the green movement--and it's not just about purchasing organic food and recycling plastic bottles any longer, but is inclusive of the automobile industry, the media, offices, schools, organizations, clothing manufactures, publi...

Now the Dean family is taking this crusade from city to city, helping people lose weight using The F.A.S.T Diet. Guest Blogger Tony Dean--Like most people I love the show "The Biggest Loser," especially how it demonstrates how hard one must work out to lose weight. What I don’t understand is how such a seemingly credible source can sometimes give such terrible advice. On the last show, Bob Harper, who I respect completely said something like, “On The Biggest Loser we have a cheat day after each weigh in to shock the body and recharge the metabolism.” Sounds great right? This comment was wrong in so many ways, but as a viewer I can only imag...

Am I irrevocably damaging my baby’s pyche by letting him cry it out at 2 a.m.? Will my six year old miss out on some great potential as an Olympic hopeful because I couldn’t squeeze in gymnastics lessons on top of her dance and martial arts? But mothers may now be able wipe at least one worry off their lists.
