Passover In Paradise

I have met many Jewish guests this week and our biggest discussion is about being Jewish and living on a small resort island in a small Caribbean Christian country. It is a very strange idea if you really think about it.Anyway, this year the JCTC (Jewish Community of Turks and Caicos) held a community seder at Beaches resort. $100 per person, no clean up or cooking necessary, servers and drinks included. I could not go bit I hear it went well.My story...I went to IGA the Tuesday before Pesach and they still hadn't put the Passover food out. Luckily there was a lovely Italian jewish couple staying at the resort and taking my Pilates mat classes who gave me 1/2 a box of matzo (enough for me for 8 days). Then I went to IGA this week and the Passover food was out, so I got more stuff. Did you know you can make yummy breaded chicken using kosher for passover potato pancake mix? Almost every Saturday night resort managers are invited to have drinks at the Terrace bar and unwind. Mid-week I received a call from my friend MB who said, "You and Tony MUST come to manager's drinks Saturday night! I brought back an entire pastrami from a NY deli and will be serving it." Don't you know that just the other day Tony was lamenting the fact that he hadn't had good pastrami in close to 3 years? I was discussing obesity with a Pilates client of mine today.  She had just returned from a trip to Disney World with her children and grandchildren, and had some interesting observations on that state of weight in America .  Her first remark was that she had never seen so many morbidly obese people in her life.  Then she went on to give me some images: obese children with faces so fat you could barely see their eyes; 11 year olds squeezed into strollers to be pushed around instead of walking; adults on motorized scooters wheezing as they got on and off; adults and kids too heavy to go on certain rides.  And then there was the food they ate.  "Individuals walking around gnawing on BBQ turkey legs big enough to feed a family of four (the official food of Disney) with extra large soft drinks and corn dogs as a snack.  Ice cream everywhere."  Apparently there are no lines for the also tasty healthier choices, so sushi and salads which ne...

Morning Commute

On Monday mornings at 8am I have the privilege of teaching a Beach Pilates class right on the main resort beach. Mind you, I tried to sell the idea of a Grace bay beach Pilates class to every resort on Provo and NOT ONE went for it! In fact, I received a call the other day from the concierge at Grace Bay Club asking if I could teach Pilates to one of their guests. I replied, "Only if they come over to Parrot Cay on a day pass and book with me at the Spa!" Anyway, enough of that.If I do not have a private or anything immediately after class I love to walk home on the beach. Smiley Discovers Grass

I don't know about you, but I LOVE oysters. My husband, who grew up in the Gulf (as a Navy brat he moved around a lot--Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana), introduced me to new ways to eat them and I love them all. Deep fried oysters, smoked oysters, steamed oysters, oyster cakes, and most of all yummy raw Gulf oysters. Lunar Eclipse Photos

One great thing about living on a small island with little ambient light is that when something like an eclipse occurs you can really see it! I took these photos with my new Blackberry Curve 8320 and emailed them to my computer.First, the moon was full and bright enough to form shadows and require no flashlight for my walk home from the spa. This was taken at 9:02pm.By 9:30pm we could already see the eclipse beginning.At 10pm only a bit of the moon is still lit (but isn't it cool how it is so clear that you can still see the outline of the entire orb?).By 10:02pm, just before I went to bed, only the tiniest sliver of the light remains. I consider it a miracle when someone's pain goes away. Maybe it's not, maybe it's "all in their head", but going from a migraine to no pain in 15 minutes seems pretty miraculous to me. So today I visited Yen Yen's Happy Hands n Feet Blog to read about her Reiki Miracles ."I was in a Buddhist community centre when one of my friends complained of a migraine. I offered him a quick Reiki session which he happily accepted. The session took about 15 - 20 minutes. When it ended, my friend opened his eyes, turned to me, and said, "Yen Yen, this is fantastic.
