Passover In Paradise
2008-04-25 22:31:00 I have met many Jewish guests this week and our biggest discussion is about being Jewish and living on a small resort island in a small Caribbean Christian country. It is a very strange idea if you really think about it.Anyway, this year the JCTC (Jewish Community of Turks and Caicos) held a community seder at Beaches resort. $100 per person, no clean up or cooking necessary, servers and drinks included. I could not go bit I hear it went well.My story...I went to IGA the Tuesday before Pesach and they still hadn't put the Passover food out. Luckily there was a lovely Italian jewish couple staying at the resort and taking my Pilates mat classes who gave me 1/2 a box of matzo (enough for me for 8 days). Then I went to IGA this week and the Passover food was out, so I got more stuff. Did you know you can make yummy breaded chicken using kosher for passover potato pancake mix? The today I saw a guest who brought kosher for passover food in bulk, along with kosher meat. When the... More About: Paradise
Alli Weight Loss Pill Review
2008-04-23 13:36:00 Sybervision.com is a site that offers reviews and a search engine to purchase almost every diet and weight loss pill on the market. One of the newer pills that we hear a lot about is Alli . As I have reported before, Alli is a fat absorption blocker. The problem here is that if you eat too much fat while taking it you will in fact poop your pants as the fat comes sliding uncontrollably out (sorry for the blunt language, but it's true!). Do the benefits outweigh (no pun intended) this embarrassing effect? I don't think so.Tags: weight loss, alli, news, reviews, lynda lippin More About: Weight Loss , Weight , Review , Loss

Hot Pastrami
2008-04-19 13:24:00 Almost every Saturday night resort managers are invited to have drinks at the Terrace bar and unwind. Mid-week I received a call from my friend MB who said, "You and Tony MUST come to manager's drinks Saturday night! I brought back an entire pastrami from a NY deli and will be serving it." Don't you know that just the other day Tony was lamenting the fact that he hadn't had good pastrami in close to 3 years? So we went last night and within 20 minutes 6 of use devoured an entire pastrami--YUM! Soul food for me. No Pain No Gain? Bulls**t!
2008-03-14 11:58:00 Are you paying for a personal trainer and you're still in pain? Do you wonder when your back or hip or knee will feel better? Does your trainer tell you to "suck it up" or even worse to just "work through it"? Has your pain gotten worse since you started exercising with this trainer?Unless you truly are into your pain, you need to fire this person. Exercise should be helping, not hurting. And a good trainer for you should be able to tell the difference between movements that will help and movements that will hurt. They should listen to you, point out places where you can change your form, and take your pain seriously.I just worked with a woman who had her first ever pain free hour of exercise in 20 years with me. She had no idea that was possible. She was convinced her hamstrings were tight when they are so overstretched they no longer help hold her up. The exercises the trainers have her doing are contraindicated for her back condition. They are making her worse instead o... More About: Pain , Bulls
Colon Clean
2008-03-13 11:47:00 If you believe most nutritionists and health foodies, a clean colon is a happy colon. Even my respected friend Laurie believes that a gentle effective colon cleanser can make a big difference in how we feel and how we process the food we eat. Co-Clean is a simple yet effective blend of safe ingredients such as apple cider vinegar and oat fiber and you only need to take 2 pills per day at bed time with an 8-12 ounce glass of water. 2 weeks and you're clean. Each bottle contains enough for 3 cleanses, and you can now buy 2 bottles and get 1 free.Tags: co-cleanse, fiber, colon cleanse, colon cleanser, lynda lippin More About: Colon
I Am In Pilates Style Magazine!
2008-03-12 11:39:00 Suzanne gerber, the Editor in Chief of Pilates Style magazine visited Parrot Cay back in November when I had just found out that I was hired as the full time resident teacher. She interviewed me, took my mat class and a private on the reformer, and has published a great little article on page 19 of the April 2008 issue entitled, "Pilates of the Caribbean". "Lynda has a great eye in class, but she really shines one-on-one. In just one hour she gave me tips I’m still using three months later."Thanks Suzanne!Tags: Pilates Style Magazine , Pilates, News, Lynda Lippin, Parrot Cay, Caribbean, Turks and Caicos, lynda lippin

Book Review: The Fattening of America
2008-03-10 11:57:00 I was discussing obesity with a Pilates client of mine today. She had just returned from a trip to Disney World with her children and grandchildren, and had some interesting observations on that state of weight in America . Her first remark was that she had never seen so many morbidly obese people in her life. Then she went on to give me some images: obese children with faces so fat you could barely see their eyes; 11 year olds squeezed into strollers to be pushed around instead of walking; adults on motorized scooters wheezing as they got on and off; adults and kids too heavy to go on certain rides. And then there was the food they ate. "Individuals walking around gnawing on BBQ turkey legs big enough to feed a family of four (the official food of Disney) with extra large soft drinks and corn dogs as a snack. Ice cream everywhere." Apparently there are no lines for the also tasty healthier choices, so sushi and salads which ne... More About: Book Review , Review , Book

Book Review: French Women Don't Get Fat
2008-03-07 04:13:00 While not a new book, French Women Don't Get Fat is such a cultural phenomenon in the US that I was very excited to have the chance to review the newly slimmed down paperback version with added recipes. Many of my recent diet articles have focused on simply eating less. Instead of deprivation or weird food restrictions (no bread, no fat, no meat), why not simply eat what you love in smaller quantities?Author Mireille Guiliano is a French businesswoman who works for my favorite Champagne, Veuve Clicquot, and as the President and CEO of US based Clicquot, Inc., (now a division of LVMH) managed to greatly increase Veuve Clicquot's American marketshare. She is not a nutritionist, a chef, a dietician, or a health professional. She is a French woman who has managed to lose and maintain her weight and has helped many of her friends and co-workers do the same. Guiliano loves to eat, loves her wine and champagne, and also understands the French paradox of generally healthier hearts and... More About: Book Review , Review , Book

Caribbean Weather
2008-03-04 19:43:00 We've had some interesting weather lately. No big rains; just some smaller storms passing by, through, and sometimes over us. On my way home from the spa a few days ago I saw this beautiful storm cloud passing right in front of me as I came up the hill. What's interesting about t is that if you look closely there are 2 systems with rain falling in different directions, forming a pyramid shape. Morning Commute
2008-03-03 19:53:00 On Monday mornings at 8am I have the privilege of teaching a Beach Pilates class right on the main resort beach. Mind you, I tried to sell the idea of a Grace bay beach Pilates class to every resort on Provo and NOT ONE went for it! In fact, I received a call the other day from the concierge at Grace Bay Club asking if I could teach Pilates to one of their guests. I replied, "Only if they come over to Parrot Cay on a day pass and book with me at the Spa!" Anyway, enough of that.If I do not have a private or anything immediately after class I love to walk home on the beach. Here are photos of this morning's 15 minute commute. This first photo is the view of the water at 9am when class was over. Then we have the long look at my destination (I live in central housing just left of the rocky point). And finally the point as I am closer to home. Not a bad life, huh?Tags: Photographs, Parrot Cay, Caribbean, Turks and Caicos, Living In Caribbean, Pilates, grace bay, grace bay club, lynda ... Smiley Discovers Grass
2008-03-03 19:24:00 On Providenciales there is no grass. Grass as we know it in the US is not native to this region, and tends not to grow well on coral rock limestone, requiring a lot of looking after. On Parrot Cay, however, we have a lot of well kept grass and Smiley loves it! Here she is just yesterday enjoying a roll in the grass:Could she be any cuter? About Those Oysters
2008-03-03 19:02:00 I don't know about you, but I LOVE oysters. My husband, who grew up in the Gulf (as a Navy brat he moved around a lot--Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana), introduced me to new ways to eat them and I love them all. Deep fried oysters, smoked oysters, steamed oysters, oyster cakes, and most of all yummy raw Gulf oysters. Just shuck 'em and eat 'em!A by-product of the oyster that increases my love and respect for the ugly non-kosher beasties is the pearl (interesting that those who keep kosher can still wear pearls, hmmm?). But thinking of pearls also got me thinking of what else it would be fun to discover in an oyster, what could make them even more valuable (to me anyway). And suddenly I had it--crystals!Yes, crystals of all forms and colors. Clear quartz and rose quartz, amethyst and blue zinc, all sorts of beautiful sea made crystals. Imagine opening an ugly oyster shell and finding, not a glob of luminous pearly white stuff, but a gorgeous glowing crystal. It would make ... More About: Oysters
Lunar Eclipse Photos
2008-03-02 18:02:00 One great thing about living on a small island with little ambient light is that when something like an eclipse occurs you can really see it! I took these photos with my new Blackberry Curve 8320 and emailed them to my computer.First, the moon was full and bright enough to form shadows and require no flashlight for my walk home from the spa. This was taken at 9:02pm.By 9:30pm we could already see the eclipse beginning. At 10pm only a bit of the moon is still lit (but isn't it cool how it is so clear that you can still see the outline of the entire orb?).By 10:02pm, just before I went to bed, only the tiniest sliver of the light remains. Too cool!Tags: Photographs, Turks and Caicos, Parrot Cay, Caribbean, lunar eclipse 2008, lynda lippin More About: Photos , Eclipse , Lunar , Lunar Eclipse

Pelvic Muscle Imbalance and Pilates

While there is no cure for such an imbalance, Henry has stated that, "it could be controlled with physiotherapy and daily pilates."Luckily the Pilates is giving her hope for a return to the pool, and after several months she plans to resume training and "hopes to compete at the World Championships in Rome next year."Tags: Pilates, Sports, Pain, olympics, beijing olympics, jodie henry, australia, lynda lippin More About: Muscle

Reiki Miracles
2008-02-28 22:54:00 I consider it a miracle when someone's pain goes away. Maybe it's not, maybe it's "all in their head", but going from a migraine to no pain in 15 minutes seems pretty miraculous to me. So today I visited Yen Yen's Happy Hands n Feet Blog to read about her Reiki Miracles ."I was in a Buddhist community centre when one of my friends complained of a migraine. I offered him a quick Reiki session which he happily accepted. The session took about 15 - 20 minutes. When it ended, my friend opened his eyes, turned to me, and said, "Yen Yen, this is fantastic. The migraine is gone!" He truly believes in Reiki now.A similar thing happened when I was at a fund raising event. One of the volunteers was complaining of a terrible pain in her ankle. She was walking painfully! I offered her a quick Reiki session, about 15 to 20 minutes. I was not expecting anything because the pain had been there for quite awhile. An hour later, someone danced in front of me, grinning cheek to cheek. It was the v...
