Confessions of a Carb Queen - The Lies You Tell Others and the Lies You Tel
2008-02-24 21:54:00 If you are a regular BlogCritics reader then you have read about weight loss and personal stories of weight loss, such as <a href="http://blogcritics.org/archive s/features/dan_nied's_fortress_of_wei ght_loss.php" target="blank">Dan Nied's Fortress of Weight Loss</a> and several of <a href="http://blogcritics.org/writer/ lynda_lippin" target="blank">my own diet related articles and reviews</a>. So on the face of it I was not too thrilled about this Confessions of a Carb Queen memoir, figuring "What else could I possibly learn?"It turns out that I could learn a lot, both about Susan Blech's astonishingly surgery-free and high carb/low fat 250 pound weight loss and about how she gained over 300 pounds in the first place. I learned about emotional eating, about lying and hiding your eating, about losing sense of yourself, about waking up and not even believing that it is your body that you li... More About: Lies

Black Ships by Jo Graham
2008-02-22 13:10:00 My review for BlogCritics.org:I really wanted to love Black Ships because I have advanced degrees in Philosophy with specializations in Ancient Greek Philosophy. I was one of the only undergraduates in my class to really enjoy reading Homer's Odyssey and Iliad and later Virgil's Aeneid. I found the Trojan War fascinating both historically in terms of its epic battles and strong characters, and philosophically in how it has been utilized to create certain thoughts and images in our collective consciousness (like Nietzsche's controversial discussions of the overman archetype in terms of the heroes Agamemnon and Achilles).Black Ships author Jo Graham has also been interested in this period since high school. She decided to retell the story from the standpoint of a woman, Gull, daughter of a slave and ultimately Pythia, oracle of the Mistress of Death. Gull is born in Greece to a Trojan slave working the flax fields. She has an accident early on that cripples her foot, thus making he...

Bad Diets Part II
2008-02-20 12:59:00 The rest of the list from Diet Overkill. Includes more popular diets such Eat Right for Your Type, Kimkins, and the infamous Master Cleanse (lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup--YUCK!)13. The blood type diet: This confusing diet requires that you eat according to your blood type. For example, if you're a blood Type A, that means vegetables are your ideal food. The main reason why this diet works at all is because-you guessed it-you're limiting what you eat. Of course, this can be achieved through portion control, and you can eat what you feel like whether you're a "hunter," "nomad," "cultivator," or any combination thereof. 14. The Hollywood diet: It should be obvious that drinking nothing but juice is bound to leave you hungry and unsatisfied, but many continue to attempt to use this quick-fix detox program as a way to permanently lose weight. Unfortunately, that's just not going to happen. This juice has a high sugar content, and nearly all of the weight you'll los... More About: Diets , Part

The Nurse's List of Bad Diets I
2008-02-18 12:41:00 From Rncentral.com, the Diet Overkill: 25 Of the Most Ridiculous (and Ineffective) Popular Diets Part One:Taken from Jessica Hupp's article, these first twelve diets are some of the worst for your health. Readers should note that Atkins and tapeworm ingestion are in the same list! 1. Atkins: Although wildly popular, and quite effective for some people, the Atkins diet is just not sustainable for most dieters. This diet cuts out healthy foods like fruit, and adopts a limited list of foods that are often high in fat and otherwise unhealthy. Above all, this diet's extreme restriction makes it incredibly difficult for most people to stick with it. 2. The Subway diet: Substituting large, unhealthy meals with a wholesome sandwich is certainly an effective way to lose weight. However, the execution of the Subway diet is what makes this one a failure. This may come as a surprise to some, but not every sandwich at Subway is a dietary winner. You can't eat 14 meatball subs a week and ... More About: List

Alcohol, Belly Fat, and Weight Loss
2007-11-18 12:47:00 I received a refreshingly honest question this morning from an admitted alcoholic requesting fitness advice. As the question was not marked private I will share it with you here as I believe it is useful.Dear Lynda,I'm a 6 feet tall male, weighing 96 kgs(overweight). I have stubborn pot belly which I want flattened. I don't look particularly fat otherwise. I also want little more wider shoulders with little more bulky arms, along with that flat stomach.Regarding my diet, I eat little(juice for breakfast with a banana, some rice with mashed potato for lunch, and something light for dinner)However I'm an alcoholic requiring 3-4 drinks of rum daily with my dinner. My question to you is-1)Will I have to stop drinking completely? Is it not possible to get a flat stomach and great shape by doing ab/weight & aerobic exercises along with diet control WITHOUT QUITTING ALCOHOL?2)I do not have the money to go to the gym and in my part of the world, not everyone can afford it (it's expensiv... How's the Diet Going?
2007-11-16 12:34:00 Nicole recently left me a comment asking how Diet Directives was going for me, as it was getting a bit more difficult for her. About me, I still stray but think this is the best diet plan I've used. Just the idea of eating regularly in smaller quantities to maintain blood sugar levels and avoid insane hunger pangs is useful to me.Nicole, if you are bouncing up and down a few pounds I would add just a bit more exercise and maybe a bit more complex carbs to your meals. Good luck!Tags: Diet Directives, Bite Diet, Diet, news, lynda lippin More About: Going , Goin

It's easy, inexpensive, and helps strengthen and tone your lower body, build bone density, and increase your cardiovascular fitness. Due to weather, bad roads, or simple convenience, many people prefer to walk on a treadmill rather than outside on a track or road. Pilates and Yoga: What's the Difference?
2007-11-12 16:20:00 Marguerite Ogle is the About.com Pilate s Guide, and she does a great job. People ask me what makes Pilates different than yoga, and I usually point out basic differences: Pilates emphasizes core strength above all, in Pilates there is more moving and less holding, and the focus is more functional than spiritual. Still, they are very complementary disciplines. In her article Pilates vs Yoga Exercises Ogle compares 5 basic yoga and pilates exercises to highlight the differences. Very interesting and easy to understand.Tags: Pilates, Yoga, core strength, exercise, about.com, marguerite ogle, news, lynda lippin More About: Difference , Diff

RE Broker Stein Killed with Pilates Bar
2007-11-11 12:38:00 According to the NY Post, New York realtor Linda Stein was murdered by her personal assistant Natavia Lowery. In her confession, Lowery revealed that she beat Stein to death with Stein's own "Yoga stick" or "Pilate s bar". Now, I always thought that if someone broke into my studio and tried to harm me I could beat them off with a stick, but this takes that thought to a whole new level. Another Rant About Pilates
2007-11-09 12:22:00 Today I came across a post titled, Winsor Pilate s : All You Need Is You by Rob Bernabe. Needeless to say, I have some rsponses. My answers are in brackets []..."If Pilates is the exercise of the elite, then Winsor Pilates is the elite of exercise. Developed by Mari Winsor, Winsor Pilates employs the Pilates techniques of toning the body and burning fat, whipping into a fast-paced frenzy that effectively speeds up the process. Favored as a mighty tool in Hollywood, Winsor Pilates has helped to elevate the popularity of this already proven exercise, and has become a famous form of workout in its own right."[There are several Pilates teachers in the LA area who train the Hollywood elite, of whom Mari Winsor is one. Pilates was meant to be done in a controlled manner, with speed only developing as one attains control. A "fast-paced frenzy" is the exact opposite of Pilates.]Winsor Pilates picks up the pace above conventional Pilates, using the tried and true exercises in a new and exc... More About: Rant

A Response to Michael Boyle & Ryan Lee
2007-11-01 14:14:00 I am impressed with the personal training work of Ryan Lee and Michael Boyle . Here I respond to an article in the new Ryan Lee newsletter... [My responses are in brackets.]This was originally published at Mike Boyle's site.“I personal train a couple of pilates instructors. It's a great learning experience for all of us. One of the discoveries that I found with the pilates instructors that I work with is that they have over activated abdominals and hip flexors and under activated glutes and hamstrings. [That is typical of Pilates teachers who do not understand body balance and strength training principles. Pilates itself is full of exercises involving Russian squats and single leg squats while standing and sometimes on a sliding reformer carriage with resistance from springs.] I'd bet that very few pure pilates/yoga people could do a good single leg squat or dead lift. They just don't get the hip stability work on a machine or lying on the floor. It's also pretty tuff to r... More About: Response
