Smoking: A Social Poison
2008-01-24 14:00:00
Discovery Of Tobacco Tobacco was discovered by the Spanish sailors on the American shores at about 1500 CE (900 AH). Since its discovery, the epidemic of smoking has continued to spread all over the world. In our times, one seldom finds a house not afflicted by it. As early as the Seventeenth Century, the European countries realized the dangers of smoking and fought against it Laws were ordained in England, Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, and other countries, prohibiting smoking and punishing violators. Nowadays, the Western countries continue their attempts to protect their peoples from the harms of smoking. They employ media means, ordain laws and regulations, and apply other methods to discourage people from smoking. Because of that, the rate of smokers has declined to a certain degree in those countries. Smoking Among Muslims Smoking was introduced to the Muslim countries by the Europeans around 1000 AH. Its spread among the Muslims was similar to that in the West. The unfortu...

Easy Ways to Lose Weight and Improve Your Health
2008-01-22 19:50:00
Beyond that, experts say, resolutions that offer some sort of noticeable result within a couple of weeks can also help keep you motivated to keep going. That said, here are five easy ways to lose weight and improve your health -- many of which may bring you positive results by mid-January.No. 1: Strap on a PedometerLet's be honest: Seeing a number at the end of the day can make getting more walking in a lot more fun (talk about instant gratification). Not bad for an investment of around $15. Striving to reach a goal, such as 10,000 steps at day's end, can be just the motivation you need to keep moving. Researchers affiliated with Stanford University looked at the results of 26 studies involving the use of pedometers in adults. They found that the study results showed that people who used pedometers significantly increased their physical activity -- and took more than 2,000 steps per day more than study participants who didn't use pedometer. Further, the researchers noted two phys...

I am going to tell you the ultimate truth that everyone is aware of it but we dont think over it i.e what is the use of clasroom teaching in medical profession. As i belong to medical profession my view over this issue is more practical rather than theoritical. Now i am going to tell you how much our government spent on classroom teaching. In my region every professor is taking about 20 classes per annum and he is getting 1,272.00 USD So if you calculate than you came to know that for each class they are getting 63 USD. In the other parts of the world the figure may be too large as compared to my region. Also we know that how many students are seriously attending the classes. On the other hand if we spent more on practicals/simulations/demonstrations then we are exposing them right from the begining and this will have emense effect in future. I am not totally against the traditional method of learning but some changes have to be made. So if you are with me or against my view write t...

Phentermine & Where to Find It Online~The Weight Loss Drug
2008-01-19 16:09:00
Getting medications online is very tricky and it is not safe to rely on any pharmaceutical company unless and untill you are well aware of the company and its product as well. Being a Clinical Pharmacologist myself, I can understand well enough which drug should be prescribed as a weightloss therapy. I was fortunate to discover a site http://www.compareop.com/index.html while surfing the internet to find a reliable source from where I could buy Phentermine, a drug used togther with diet and exercise to treat obesity (overweight) in people with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, for myself and also for thers in need of it. When I finally found the above mentioned site, all information about the drug Phenteramine (about its indication, Price list, comparison chart) going through my head and many things that puzzled me came to my understanding. This site features other reliable sites selling this drug, compares their prices, their way of delivering...

New Cholesterol Genes Found
2008-01-16 18:13:00
Scientists have discovered seven genes that affect levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and triglycerides (another type of blood fat). Several of those genes "are potentially attractive drug targets" to lower heart disease risk, write the University of Michigan's Cristen Willer, PhD, and colleagues. Two of the newly identified genes only affect HDL cholesterol, one only affects LDL cholesterol, three only affect triglycerides, and one affects LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Willer's team also confirmed that 11 previously identified genes affect cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels. The scientists spotted the cholesterol and triglyceride genes by analyzing DNA from more than 8,800 people and then double-checking their findings by testing the DNA of more than 11,000 other people. The findings were published online in Nature Genetics, along with two independent studies with similar results. Willer and colleagues also noticed that genes for high LDL choles...

Long-QT Syndrome
2008-01-10 19:41:00
The most common cause of sudden death in a young person is the long-QT syndrome characterized by abnormal QT prolongation and increased risk of ventricular fibrillation. Common presentations of the long-QT syndrome are palpitations, presyncope, syncope, and cardiac arrest. The differential diagnosis of syncope in a young patient ranges from benign conditions such as vasovagal syncope to serious genetic conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.Genetic testing for the long-QT syndrome is most useful in two settings. First, when a clinical diagnosis is relatively certain, knowing the specific gene (or the site of the mutation within the gene) may clarify the prognosis and guide therapeutic choices. Second, in a family with an affected proband and a known genetic defect, the genotyping can help rule out the diagnosis in some family members. The major therapeutic options for the long-QT syndrome are beta-blockers and implant...

The First Documented Case of Cancer
2008-01-02 18:16:00
The world's oldest documented case of cancer hails from ancient Egypt, in 1500 b.c. The details were recorded on a papyrus, documenting 8 cases of tumors occurring on the breast. It was treated by cauterization, a method to destroy tissue with a hot instrument called "the fire drill". It was also recorded that there was no treatment for the disease, only palliative treatment. There is evidence that the ancient Egyptians were able to tell the difference between malignant and benign tumors. According to inscriptions, surface tumors were surgically removed in a similar manner as they are removed today. Early Physicians Thought about causation of Cancer Today, know so much about the human body, however early Greek physicans weren't so fortunate. Hippocrates believed that the body was composed of four fluids: blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. He believed that an excess of black bile in any given site in the body caused cancer. Treating Cold at Home
2007-12-28 18:34:00
There are some cold remedies that i have taken from other website. So avoid taking medicines for Cold /flu and manage it byyourself at home.Cold Remedy #1: Drink plenty of fluids to help break up your congestion. Drinking water or juice will prevent dehydration and keep your throat moist. You should drink at least 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Include fluids such as water, sports drinks, herbal teas, fruit drinks, or ginger ale. Your mother's chicken soup might help too! (Avoid cola, coffee, and other drinks with caffeine because it acts like a diuretic and may dehydrate you.) Cold Remedy #2: Inhale steam to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a pot of boiling water and breathe through your nose. Be careful. If the steam burns your nose, breathe in more slowly. You can buy a humidifier, but the steam will be the same as the water on the stove. Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as help...

Cholesterol-Lowering Medication
2007-12-28 14:01:00
The first line of treatment for high cholesterol is usually to eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet and increase exercise. But, for some, these changes alone are not enough to lower cholesterol. These people may need medicine, in addition to making dietary changes, to bring their cholesterol down to a safe level. Cholesterol -lowering drugs include: Statins Niacin Bile-acid resins Fibric acid derivatives How Do Statins Work? Statins block the production of cholesterol in the liver itself. They lower LDL, the "bad" cholesterol, and triglycerides, and have a mild effect in raising HDL, the "good" cholesterol. These drugs are the first line of treatment for most people with high cholesterol. Side effects can include intestinal problems, liver damage, and in a few people, muscle tenderness. How Does Nicotinic Acid Work? Nicotinic acid is a B-complex vitamin. It's found in food, but is also available at high doses by prescription. It lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL cholesterol. The main s...

Antibiotics Use Dramatically Raises Risk of Asthma in Infants
2007-12-24 20:30:00
Using antibiotics in the first year of life may significantly increase a child's risk of contracting asthma by age 7, according to a study conducted by researchers at University of Manitoba and McGill University in Montreal and published in "CHEST," the journal of the American College of Chest Physicians. The researchers examined a prescription database that included information on 13,116 children and compared incidence of asthma with a variety of risk factors, including antibiotic use, gender, maternal asthma history, living location, neighborhood income, the presence of pets in the home and the number of siblings at the age of seven. The study concluded that those who had received antibiotics for the treatment of a non-respiratory tract infection in their first year were twice as likely to suffer from asthma at the age of seven than those who had not. The higher the number of treatments, the higher the child's risk of asthma.Eighty-seven percent of children who had received antibi...
