Tongue Piercing is all the rage today. As a hygienist I have to warn those of you that want or have your tongue pierced. Premed for Dental Procedures?
2007-04-25 04:05:00
New guidelines regarding antibiotics to prevent infective endocarditis The American Heart Association recently updated its guidelines regarding which patients should take a precautionary antibiotic to prevent infective endocarditis (IE) before a trip to the dentist. The guidelines, published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, are based on a growing body of scientific evidence that shows that, for most people, the risks of taking prophylaxis antibiotics for certain procedures outweigh the benefits. These guidelines represent a major change in philosophy. The new guidelines show taking preventive antibiotics is not necessary for most people and, in fact, might create more harm than good. Unnecessary use of antibiotics could cause allergic reactions and dangerous antibiotic resistance. Only the people at greatest risk of bad outcomes from infective endocarditis — an infection of the heart’s inner lining or the heart valves — should receive short-term p...

Tongue Thrusts: Trick to stopping
2007-04-23 22:37:00
Just a quick post to enlighten our readers on a trick my Dentist told a patient the other day. Our little 7 year old patient has a tongue thrust that is causing her to lisp. It’s also changing the shape of her mouth causing her top teeth to protrude. Anyway, Here’s an exercise that can help to retrain the tongue: Take a tic-tac and place it in the roof of your mouth. Now swallow while keeping the tic-tac in place. Repeat this exercise as much as needed to retrain your tongue to stay back rather than push forward when swallowing.
