Right In the Middle Of Everything

I hope I don’t have to be too patient to get a few answers.  This afternoon I was riding about 20 miles per hour and was still being chased by black flies.  They would circle around me and be in my face.  I just did laundry last night so I am not sure what was the attraction.  Anyway, the question is: How fast can flies fly? The second question is: Where is the geographical center of North America? In the middle of the night a big storm blew thru headed east. The power was knocked out for a few hours and friends who were camping ended up with a couple of inches of water in their tent. I hear it is bringing cool weather right to the east coast by the weekend. Why can air move so fast while it will take me all summer to get to the Atlantic...

What a good suggestion. When I woke up it was foggy with no wind, so I headed east on Old 2. I enjoyed seeing close up the purple flax fields and the yellow canola fields.  It was also nice to see weeds at the edge of the road, which are as pretty as baby’s breath. I had read that there were white pelicans in the area, now I am a believer. And how relaxing to see these ducks on such a still pond. Reflect on this: same Pictures, flipped upside down: The best part about riding on Old Highway 2 was the lack...

In the June 16 blog, I mentioned three men who I met in Republic with whom I had dinner.  A couple of days later I had the pleasure of riding with them.  Two of the men were 71 years young and following their dreams to ride across our country. Eric was one of these men and his wife Elizabeth was driving a support vehicle. A week ago Saturday when I was in East Glacier someone came up to me and said, “be careful tomorrow riding to Browning ...

Just think. In less than a hundred years how fast our society has changed. From education to food choices to medicine to fashion to communications. Even getting a perm is easier. And the changes in food production. When I asked these two volunteers “What was the most precious item in the museum?” Without a hesitation and with big smiles they said, “We are!” Looking back in history makes me appreciate what so many people and generations have done to give us the wonderful life we have today.  How easy w...

Well, I would like to give a few examples of “Northwest Hospitality.”  Two days ago I stopped in the afternoon at a small convenience store to get an ice cream.  A man can up to me and asked  whether I was riding east or west.  When I said I was headed west he said there was a small town in that direction with no motels. He is the Pastor of the Lutheran Church there and said I would be more than welcome to stay there.  “Just go right in and make your self at home. We like to make bikers feel welcome.”  I thanked him, but said I had plans to do about 45 more miles.  I told him I was just visiting with two bikers who were planning to cam...

The openness of the land is truly amazing.  In the last two days, I have traveled 287 miles. When I stopped last night, I could see the road just goes on and on and on.  Actually when my odometer turned 130 miles about 6:15 this evening, I only had another seven miles to go, but I was wishing Glasgow could be a little farther.  Sometimes the mind and the legs don’t communicate too well.  To ride with the long shadows of the evening light with the wind at your back can be exhilarating. I haven’t stooped to take many pictures because it is hard to do justice to this country.  To see the sky meet the horizon...

As you can see the sky was gray and throughout the morning would hit some wet pavement, but never felt a drop.  The best news was the wind was between 20 and 40 mph pushing at my back all day. And as I continued to RIDE the sky became bluer and bluer. I was averaging over 2...

Actually, a couple of times there were a few drops of rain.  The first hour flew by at an average of 20 mph.  A downhill grade and a tailwind will sure step up the pace. As easy as it was to leave the Rockies physically, it was hard to leave them mentally. I stopped and took these four shots, thinking it might be my last glimpse of the mountains. Then I got back on my bike and took this picture to the east.  What contrast there is in life as well as in terrain? For over forty miles today, I rode through the Blackfeet Nation Reservation. When I looked to my left, I saw this herd of buffalo. I rode for another twenty miles and turned around and the Rockies were still very present....

By Bob Lee   Ride Date: June 23 Essex to East Glacier, MT – 38 MILES Last night after dinner, I went for a walk in the wood to catch a glimpse of the river.  I never roam far without my Canon camera, so I thought I would share some pictures in the evening light.  Actually, it was after 9:00 when these were taken. This morning at breakfast Dean and Laurie Twehues walked into the restaurant. I had met them just briefly one evening in Eastern Washington over a week ago.  I am glad we reconnected because they are another inspirational couple living their life for the right reasons. How and why did Dean retire at age 50?  I asked.  His early retirement was motivated by a book I mention often – Halftime by Bob Buford.  He didn’t JUST read it. He read it over 5 years ago and then started to plan for the rest of their lives.  Dean had a high-level engineering job and traveled all over continuously.  He asked for a demot...

He's hoping to arrive by New Years.  Mark has walked the trail 3 times and Cindy has walked the trail 5 times. She is helping to edit a book about the Appalachian Trail. Then, to catch one is a whole different story.  I felt like I was being watched when finally the waiter came by and suggested the Idaho trout that was on the menu.  Good choice. After dinner, I noticed the clouds were breaking up and I hoped for good riding weather tomorrow. Recently I talked about the difficulty to get media attention. While still in Washington just outside of Newport, I met this woman with her horse. I took her picture to remind me what she said.  Earlier that morning I had stayed in Newport for a couple of extra hours trying to get an interview with the local paper. I was turned down because I wasn’t “local”.  I tried explaining that the reasons for which I ride are local in every community —including Newport.  The woman with the horse told me her brother died from canc...

Yesterday I had a wonderful call from Ralph Russo and I spent the afternoon thinking about Ralph.  Instead of starting this blog with pictures of beautiful scenery, I want to share a couple of pictures of two beautiful people.  I have learned it is not where we live or what we own that brings us joy and wealthy; it is who we might get to know in this short time span we call life. A number of you have made nice comments about my blogs. Believe me when I say, they wouldn’t be the same without my Editor and Chief – Jim Langdon. Jim is an amazing guy who lives in Omaha and one day last summer said, “If I can be of help, let me know.” About two week after Jim made that offer, I call to say, “HELP!” He worked non-stop to build the first website which is the foundation of what you see today and every night works at organizing the pictures, editing my thoughts, finds the links, connects to goggle link so you can see the terrain and even makes still pictures move. I know Jim through my business relationship with Designer Blinds of Omaha. DBO has been a great supplier of Hunter Douglas products to my window covering business. Jim is a very talented employee with a great understanding of product features and specifications, possesses up believable computer skills and just plain “knows the business.” Jim is a family man and he and his wife have three chi...

The pictures last night of the cloud display over the Pend Oreille River was from the deck of my motel room at the Riverview Inn in Ione. I had been told this is just one of two rivers that flow north.  Actually, there are many.  Does anybody know of any others?  This river flows into Canada, which is less than twenty miles away and then joins the Columbia to flow back down to the Pacific.  Yesterday, I heard about a man who swam the entire length of the Columbia to raise awareness about the water pollution. There are some amazing people. I woke this morning thinking about some of the people I met this first week.  I met a woman whose husband was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease soon after retirement.  Her message was don’t put off until tomorrow wh...

What a ride! Just like life. Normally we think of “up” as good and “down” as bad.  But in the biking world we usually think of things just the opposite.  After reaching the bottom of Sherman Pass I thought of today’s RIDE as a ride through life.  Riding up hill (or going slower) allowed me to see more, hear more, think more and exercise more.  In c...

After a two-week break, I felt pretty good, but not as good as these two friends, Popeye and Superman. It would be great to have their energy. For a moment this morning, I did feel like them when I saw this lady.  Had I already completed the RIDE? Or did I just get on the wrong plane? Then I saw the roses and knew I must be in the northwest.  When Anne and I visited Seattle a number of years ago we visited one of the most magnificent rose gardens.  Roses seem to grow like weeds out here. I apologize for the break in the blogs, but after 2 months away it was time to touch home plate.  I had always planned a trip through Chicago —to go home to pick up camping equipment.  My new traveling partners will be a Black Diamond tent, a Marmot down sleeping bag, a neat little stove from Jetboil and a sleeping pad.  Thanks to these three companies mentioned for helping to equip me for this next leg of the journey.  I am also wearing a bracelet that I received for my birthday that says, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Boy, was it nice to have “home” as a destination if only for a couple of weeks. Traveling Further Than The Obstacles
2007-05-30 00:17:00
By Bob Lee   May 28 - Memorial Day 2007 During the past few days that I have been home on R&R, I have had the opportunity to read through 8 weeks of mail.  Yesterday I read a card from two special friends with this powerful message:Each one of us who travels further than the obstaclesWill know a different kind of life from that time on…This morning I re-read the card a number of times as I thought of a young man who met one of the worst obstacles any of us could face. From that time on, his life DID take on new meaning; and his heart and soul and determination will impact our lives forever! On Sunday, May 27, Jon Blais (THE BLAZEMAN) lost his battle to ALS. Jon was a great warrior who had committed the rest of his life to raising awareness of this horrific disease so that others might not be faced with the same obstacle. Jon’s spirit is free now!  I know that he would be honored that we will continue the fight to eradicate ALS.  The war goes on un...

By Bob Lee   Ride Date: May 23 Orland, ME to Bar Harbor, ME - 42 Miles One day can make a difference. I will show you why at the end.  Last night when I got up to get a drink the bathroom was slightly illuminated by a security light outdoors.  I looked into the white sink and I thought there was something black in it.  This morning when I was getting up my guest was headed down to take a nap. I am glad I traveled through Maine at this time of the year. Spring has arrived, but the tourists haven’t, and the black flies are just coming out.  The timing of this RIDE has been great so far.  Early in the day I talked to a reporter from the Bangor Daily News where they have done a nice write up on the RIDE. It seems like everything is just waking up and getting ready for “the season” which starts this weekend.  Many businesses have been closed all winter and are busy cleaning, fixing, painting, mowing and hoping for a good tourist season...

By Bob Lee   Ride Date: May 22 Camden, ME to East Orland, ME - 42 Miles What a way to end the day yesterday… And to start a new day today... Some people ask if it is lonely traveling solo?  Last night I spend the evening in a popular B&B within one block of downtown Camden – the Camden Windward House. This morning I sat at a table by myself but I was not alone, my table companion was this lovely tulip. Too often we let this beauty slip past us, without a second thought. All life is amazing..After breakfast I visited with the Innkeeper, Kristen. She said they will be doing a fundraiser for Margo Pellegrino, a mother of two who is paddling an outrigger canoe from Miami to Maine. Her effort is to help raise awareness and funds to help save our oceans. When you are on the road, you seem to hear more about special efforts like this.  While she paddles, I pedal.  I have to say I would rather ride my bike. At least she doesn't have any hills.  Hmm...

By Bob Lee   Ride Date: May 21  Newcastle, ME To Camden, ME - 34 Miles I didn’t need to look at my watch to see what day it was.  The answer, my friend, was blowing in the wind and Monday was flapping in the breeze. Last night I stayed at a very nice B & B named The Tipsey Butler .  Sarah and Tony have been the Innkeepers for a few years and is another example of someone following their dreams.  For years Sarah had a successful career on Wall Street working for a private bank, but wanted more out of life.  She wanted a life.  They gave up their careers and came to Maine – not for wealth but for a richer life. Life is not easy, but Sarah looks back with no regrets. ..On my RIDE I go from extremes.  From breakfast bars to breakfast with the Tipsey Butler.  Broiled grapefruit with ginger sugar... blueberry lemon pancakes with warm blueberry sauce. This would be a great place to come for a few days and unwind. ...

By Bob Lee   Ride Date:  May 20 Freeport, ME To Newcastle, ME - 43 Miles I would like to crow some more praises for L.L. Bean You don’t need to look around for someone to help you. I found they listened.  They will even walk the extra mile to help.  I am impressed.  I stopped by late this morning on my way out of town to look for a reflector light for the back of my bike. Within a couple of minutes the sales person offered to get a state book of biking roads, then offered to drive 3 hours to pick me up in Bar Harbor to get me to the airport!  A good business is made of good people! A few miles north of Freeport I saw this mailbox.  By the time the RIDE is completed I will have shared a variety of mailbox pictures, but this one caught my eye being a biker.  Those are bike rims surrounding the mailbox with wind chimes suspended from the rims. There is also a windmill on top to show the velocity of the wind. I then rode in...

I thought of this quote as I moved into the Big Apple ."Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." Lao Tzu 6th Century BC Just for the record, I was in a van with my bike..It has been some time since I have been to the city.  The last time I was there, King Kong was on the Empire State Building.  Oh, how some things change and others don’t.  New York has tried to sweeten its image. But when police cars need to advertise like this, the sweetness may melt in your in your hand and not in your mouth.
