How Much Is Too Much Plastic Surgery?

The recent publicity surrounding the death of Michael Jackson has included much discussion about plastic surgery, specifically people who have too much plastic surgery.  This does come up with patients.  It may even be more prevalent here in Los Angeles than in other parts of the country.Without a doubt, there is such a thing as too much plastic surgery.  The key is to understand why someone is looking for a procedure.  Is it for reasonable goals, such as seeking Beverly Hills rhinoplasty to smooth a large bump on the nose?  Similarly, is it to have a Mommy Makeover to return to that pre-baby shape?  These are reasonable goals.  They are what we look for in people who have appropriate expectations for procedures.Warning signs of someone having too much plastic surgery, or seeking it for questionable reasons, are when someone says the procedure is for somebody else, to radically change someone's life, or to land that job as the next "Baywatch&...

Time for Summer!

Plastic surgery for men is an increasingly popular area within our field.  In the past, plastic surgery was almost exclusively the domain of women.  Sure, there was the occasional man who came in but by and large this was quite rare.  No more.  We do more plastic surgery for men every month.  In fact, our volume of male patients is growing even faster than that for our women.There are several very popular procedures for men.  We do a large number of rhinoplasty procedures on male patients.  Many of these men also have breathing issues, including snoring which can be corrected with a simultaneous septoplasty.  We do a lot of fat removal on male patients, often with large volume liposuction.  Not everyone is a candidate for these procedures.  You must be in very good health and allow a bit more extended time both for recovery and to see the final results.  We often do eyelid surgery to freshen the face.  And, of course, we do...

Rhinoplasty Recovery

One thing we find people are very concerned about is bruising after rhinoplasty.  People do not like that "racoon" look where their cheeks and under their eyes becomes black and blue.In the past, this sort of bruising was the norm.  It tended to happen after all types of rhinoplasty procedures -- when the nose was broken, or if it was not, and even when the procedure just worked on the very tip of the nose.  Now, however, we are seeing much less bruising during recovery from nose surgery.  It may be because we use a lot of epinephrine or adrenalin during the surgery now, and this tightens blood vessels.  Tight blood vessels tend to bleed less.  Since bruising is the result of blood under the skin, our current techniques tend to minimize this bruising from happening.So if you are considering a nose procedure, or any type of Los Angeles cosmetic surgery, bruising may be less of a concern than in times past.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Having a Palm Spring tummy tuck is a big decision.  It is important to not only understand the intended and likely results, but also the recovery.  Recovery from tummy tuck is often less than people expect.  However, it is important to know that there are limits on activity following the procedure.  The most important is no heavy lifting!  This is for at six to eight weeks.  And even then you should take it easy when it comes to lifting heavy things.  Another issue is the scar.  It takes at least a year to get close to the final result.  The scar will go through phases where it will look red, raised -- and ugly.  With a good understanding of recovery, it is most likely to have a pleasing healing period following your procedure.

Now that the holidays are here, many people are thinking of doing procedures so they can recover quickly during their built-in vacation time.  This is the busiest time of the year.  One thing to remember is that different procedures need different lengths of recovery.  For example, while Beverly Hills liposuction may need only a few days of recovery other procedures such as tummy tuck take longer to get back up to speed.  The important thing is to plan ahead.  If you are interested in doing a procedure during the holiday period, come in as soon as you can to have an exam and discuss your goals.  From there we can help you decide how plastic surgery best fits in with your holiday plans.

Watch Out for the Winter Sun

I was out doing errands recently and spent a good deal of time outside.  It was cool now that the autumn is here.  The sun was bright, however.  At the end of the day I had a pretty bad sunburn.  The winter sun is lower in the sky and seems even brighter than in the summer.  Now is the time to extra care of your skin.  Wear sunscreen even when you are not planning to be outside for long.  Do the same when it seems cool -- the temperature can be deceptive and hide a very strong sun.  This of course goes for everyone.  But it is especially true if you recently had surgery and even moreso for facial procedures such as rhinoplasty.

Winter Skin Care

This weekend really does mark the coming of winter here in Los Angeles.  It was very cold and windy.  And during this sort of weather, the rules change a bit for keeping fresh skin.  As a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, these are some of the things I tell patients at this time of year.  First is to keep using sunscreen as the sun is still strong and can just plain age the skin.  Now is also the time to be sure to use a moisturizer to keep the skin fresh.  And since there is some less sun now, it is a good time to do procedures such as peels or laser that require hiding from the sun for a few days following.More to come!

Most Patients Desire Reconstructive Surgery

I came across an interesting article recently, about how patients perceive reconstructive surgery after having had it.  Not surprisingly, much as we see with Los Angeles plastic surgery patients, most people who had reconstruction were pleased to have had it.  Following is a summary of the article----Women who have breast reconstruction after an elective mastectomy are satisfied with their decision, have low complication rates and 98 percent would do it again, reports a study in July's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal.. In addition, breast reconstruction after preventive mastectomy was as safe as or safer than reconstruction in women with breast cancer and had excellent cosmetic results. An Odd Story!

Plastic Surgery in Brazil

I recently returned from Brazil , where my father and I did surgery to assist a patient's breathing.  This was a nerve surgery designed to help patients on a ventilator breathe without the external device.  The procedure uses a phrenic nerve pacemaker.  The idea is to allow the breathing muscle or diaphragm to work again.  This allows the lungs to function without using a ventilator.  And this allows patients to do such things as sit up, speak, and in general be much more mobile.As a California plastic surgeon, I thought doing a procedure in Brazil might be very different from doing surgery here at home.  But I found that surgery is in some respects an international language and we were able to have the procedure go very smoothly even though I do not speak Portuguese and the staff did not speak English.  Reports are that the patient is doing very well.  He will need some time before he can use the phrenic nerve pacemaker for long periods....

Breast Augmentation and Infections

A recent study found that there is a higher rate of infection after breast augmentation than previously thought.  Their noted rate of infection is higher than we have experienced doing breast augmentation in Los Angeles.  But the study raises important issues.  It is important to have the procedure done in a sterile operating room, best at a fully certified surgery center.  We place patients on a short course of antibiotics after the surgery and give them by vein as part of the actual procedure; this is our protocol for all larger surgeries, such as tummy tuck in California.Below is a description of the study on this issue, which does have implications for plastic surgery Beverly Hills:The authors explained that infection rates at the incision site after the surgical removal of a breast (mastectomy) or other breast procedures range from 1% to 28%. Nip/Tuck Joins Us On Rodeo Drive
