Preparing for Plastic Surgery
2009-12-10 22:07:00 Although plastic surgery is an increasingly popular type of surgery, it is still an important decision and step in one's life. People must be mentally as well as physically prepared for the surgery as well as the recovery process. In preparation for your surgery, it is important to do some research and find a surgeon whom you feel comfortable with. From there, it is best to set up a consultation in which you'll meet with the doctor and discuss the procedure in detail, as well as go over your medical history, previous surgeries, associated risks involved as well as expectations and recovery process. After your consultation and once you decide to book your surgery, you will go for some routine lab work to make sure you are a healthy candidate for this procedure. It is important to follow the instructions that the surgeon gives you at the time of your consult for your pre op instructions as well as post op instructions after the surgery. Some things to be aware of are to pick up you... More About: Plastic Surgery , Surgery , Plastic

How Much Is Too Much Plastic Surgery?
2009-07-18 05:43:00 The recent publicity surrounding the death of Michael Jackson has included much discussion about plastic surgery, specifically people who have too much plastic surgery. This does come up with patients. It may even be more prevalent here in Los Angeles than in other parts of the country.Without a doubt, there is such a thing as too much plastic surgery. The key is to understand why someone is looking for a procedure. Is it for reasonable goals, such as seeking Beverly Hills rhinoplasty to smooth a large bump on the nose? Similarly, is it to have a Mommy Makeover to return to that pre-baby shape? These are reasonable goals. They are what we look for in people who have appropriate expectations for procedures.Warning signs of someone having too much plastic surgery, or seeking it for questionable reasons, are when someone says the procedure is for somebody else, to radically change someone's life, or to land that job as the next "Baywatch&... Time for Summer!
2009-06-28 00:49:00 Summer is one of our busiest times of year here at Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery. People have time off from work and school. They have sunshine and beaches on their minds. And so many people decide to have such procedures as tummy tuck in Beverly Hills during this season. There are several issues to consider prior to deciding on summer time plastic surgery. First off, you should decide if the procedure is right for you. Why do you want to have this done? Is it for yourself or for someone else? Do you feel it will make you happier or do you feel it will make unrealistic changes in your life such as instantly finding a mate or getting a job promotion? As a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, I try to work through all these sorts of questions with patients prior to moving forward with procedures.it is also important to arrange time to recover from and enjoy the results of the procedure. This may be why the summer is so popular for pl... More About: Summer , Time
Plastic Surgery for Men
2009-06-06 02:34:00 Plastic surgery for men is an increasingly popular area within our field. In the past, plastic surgery was almost exclusively the domain of women. Sure, there was the occasional man who came in but by and large this was quite rare. No more. We do more plastic surgery for men every month. In fact, our volume of male patients is growing even faster than that for our women. There are several very popular procedures for men. We do a large number of rhinoplasty procedures on male patients. Many of these men also have breathing issues, including snoring which can be corrected with a simultaneous septoplasty. We do a lot of fat removal on male patients, often with large volume liposuction. Not everyone is a candidate for these procedures. You must be in very good health and allow a bit more extended time both for recovery and to see the final results. We often do eyelid surgery to freshen the face. And, of course, we do... Information on Breast Implants
2009-05-21 17:22:00 Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, In fact, during this time of economic recession the procedure is one of them that is continuing to see increased popularity. Prior to having breast augmentation in Los Angeles, it is best to go through a formal process of planning. Why do you want the procedure? What changes are you hoping to make and why? Do you understand what can go right and wrong with this procedure? Do you realize that the procedure likely is not permanent and that at some point in the future you likely will want or need another procedure? Do you understand the recovery process? If you can answer these questions you may be ready to go ahead with this sort of plastic surgery Los Angeles. If not, you should spend more time with your physician getting a better understanding of how breast augmentation may or may not fit in with your plans. The best informed patients are the happiest ... Rhinoplasty Recovery
2009-04-20 22:20:00 One thing we find people are very concerned about is bruising after rhinoplasty. People do not like that "racoon" look where their cheeks and under their eyes becomes black and blue.In the past, this sort of bruising was the norm. It tended to happen after all types of rhinoplasty procedures -- when the nose was broken, or if it was not, and even when the procedure just worked on the very tip of the nose. Now, however, we are seeing much less bruising during recovery from nose surgery. It may be because we use a lot of epinephrine or adrenalin during the surgery now, and this tightens blood vessels. Tight blood vessels tend to bleed less. Since bruising is the result of blood under the skin, our current techniques tend to minimize this bruising from happening. So if you are considering a nose procedure, or any type of Los Angeles cosmetic surgery, bruising may be less of a concern than in times past. Plastic Surgery on the Upswing -- In Scotland
2009-03-11 19:33:00 I came across this article from Europe, noting the increased plastic surgery volume. This of course is a bit of a surprise, as the economy generally takes its toll on all elective medical procedures. Here is a reprint from the Scotsman newspaper ---IN these times of belt-tightening and cutbacks, you would have thought cosmetic surgeons would be left twiddling their scalpels. But it seems the credit crunch is actually providing an unexpected boost for the industry, with the number of people in Edinburgh undergoing expensive cosmetic surgery – particularly breast enlargements – on the rise. Some experts even believe the hike could be down to a determination to look and feel good in increasingly competitive work environments. The number of Edinburgh women undergoing breast enhancement surgery rocketed by more than 20 per cent last year, according to the Transform Cosmetic Surgery Group, which carried out 324 procedures at its clinic on Great Stuart Stre... Breast Augmentation Recovery
2009-01-30 21:21:00 Many people ask about recovery from Beverly Hills breast augmentation. This is an important question. Prior to having any procedure it is important to understand the recovery process. For some people, recovery will be more or less extensive than for others. It depends on your usual level of activity, the type of implant used, and many other factors. Since recovery is so variable, it is especially important to review in detail with your surgeon prior to having the procedure done. More About: Recovery , Breast Augmentation , Breast , Augmentation
Tummy Tuck Recovery
2008-12-20 19:15:00 Having a Palm Spring tummy tuck is a big decision. It is important to not only understand the intended and likely results, but also the recovery. Recovery from tummy tuck is often less than people expect. However, it is important to know that there are limits on activity following the procedure. The most important is no heavy lifting! This is for at six to eight weeks. And even then you should take it easy when it comes to lifting heavy things. Another issue is the scar. It takes at least a year to get close to the final result. The scar will go through phases where it will look red, raised -- and ugly. With a good understanding of recovery, it is most likely to have a pleasing healing period following your procedure.
Some Liposuction Thoughts
2008-11-26 07:24:00 Now that the holidays are here, many people are thinking of doing procedures so they can recover quickly during their built-in vacation time. This is the busiest time of the year. One thing to remember is that different procedures need different lengths of recovery. For example, while Beverly Hills liposuction may need only a few days of recovery other procedures such as tummy tuck take longer to get back up to speed. The important thing is to plan ahead. If you are interested in doing a procedure during the holiday period, come in as soon as you can to have an exam and discuss your goals. From there we can help you decide how plastic surgery best fits in with your holiday plans. More About: Liposuction , Thoughts
Watch Out for the Winter Sun
2008-11-08 21:47:00 I was out doing errands recently and spent a good deal of time outside. It was cool now that the autumn is here. The sun was bright, however. At the end of the day I had a pretty bad sunburn. The winter sun is lower in the sky and seems even brighter than in the summer. Now is the time to extra care of your skin. Wear sunscreen even when you are not planning to be outside for long. Do the same when it seems cool -- the temperature can be deceptive and hide a very strong sun. This of course goes for everyone. But it is especially true if you recently had surgery and even moreso for facial procedures such as rhinoplasty. More About: Watch , Winter
Winter Skin Care
2008-10-12 19:09:00 This weekend really does mark the coming of winter here in Los Angeles. It was very cold and windy. And during this sort of weather, the rules change a bit for keeping fresh skin. As a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, these are some of the things I tell patients at this time of year. First is to keep using sunscreen as the sun is still strong and can just plain age the skin. Now is also the time to be sure to use a moisturizer to keep the skin fresh. And since there is some less sun now, it is a good time to do procedures such as peels or laser that require hiding from the sun for a few days following.More to come! A Good Article on Skin Care
2008-09-07 08:40:00 I recently came across this article about skin care in the summer. Even though we are heading into the fall, our California climate makes the suggestions here timely all year round. As a Los Angeles cosmetic surgeon, I find that people often find as much satisfaction from good skin tone as they do from having more invasive surgical procedures such as breast augmentation in Beverly Hills. Here is a reprint of the article --Summertime, and the living is easy -- that is, until you notice the havoc all that fun in the sun has wrought on your body. Fortunately, summer also brings an abundance of tasty and nutritious foods, including berries (loaded with antioxidants), tomatoes, sweet bell peppers (good vitamin C source), and protein-filled grilled fish and burgers. And by simply choosing the right ones to add to your daily diet, you can help prevent or alleviate the following common hot-weather woes: Dry or Damaged Skin What causes it: You sweat more in the summer, so skin is ... Revision Plastic Surgery
2008-08-08 07:34:00 I came across an interesting article about revision plastic surgery. This is an important subject. We are seeing more and more plastic surgery patients who had procedures elsewhere and now want to have improvements. The issue can be difficult -- a first time rhinoplasty is always easier than a secondary, for example. Here is the article about this subject----The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery urges patients to follow certain precautions to avoid what is now being termed "revision cosmetic surgery." Revision cosmetic surgery occurs when the patient is unhappy with the results of the procedure and undergoes another surgery to fix it. In such cases, the patient may return to the same doctor to achieve better results or choose to visit another due to lack of confidence in the previous doctor. All too often, patients desire unrealistic results from cosmetic procedures. To combat this there needs to be an honest conversation between the doctor and pat... Most Patients Desire Reconstructive Surgery
2008-07-13 08:27:00 I came across an interesting article recently, about how patients perceive reconstructive surgery after having had it. Not surprisingly, much as we see with Los Angeles plastic surgery patients, most people who had reconstruction were pleased to have had it. Following is a summary of the article----Women who have breast reconstruction after an elective mastectomy are satisfied with their decision, have low complication rates and 98 percent would do it again, reports a study in July's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal.. In addition, breast reconstruction after preventive mastectomy was as safe as or safer than reconstruction in women with breast cancer and had excellent cosmetic results. "Breast cancer is a terrible diagnosis and decisions regarding treatment are never easy. This study shows that women with cancer in one breast who choose to have their other breast removed as a preventive measure are happy with their decision and a high percentage would ... An Odd Story!
2008-06-07 07:36:00 Reuters had a strange report about a banned surgical procedure in Thailand. It would seem very reasonable to ban destructive surgical procedures, and certainly maiming people (even if it is for aesthetic reasons) is not what we do when we provide Los Angeles cosmetic surgery! When we do procedures such as rhinoplasty, we obviously do not remove important functional parts of the nose just to make it look better, for example.Below is a reprint of the plastic surgery news article -- Thailand's health chiefs barred hospitals and clinics on Wednesday from castrating would-be "lady boys" amid growing concern about the operation being seen as a cheap and quick alternative to a full sex change. In a letter to 16,000 private health units, the Public Health Ministry said doctors performing the operation outside formal sex change therapy, which requires rigorous physical and mental evaluation of the patient, faced up to six months in jail. However, senior health official Tara C... More About: Story
Plastic Surgery in Brazil
2008-05-14 22:02:00 I recently returned from Brazil , where my father and I did surgery to assist a patient's breathing. This was a nerve surgery designed to help patients on a ventilator breathe without the external device. The procedure uses a phrenic nerve pacemaker. The idea is to allow the breathing muscle or diaphragm to work again. This allows the lungs to function without using a ventilator. And this allows patients to do such things as sit up, speak, and in general be much more mobile. As a California plastic surgeon, I thought doing a procedure in Brazil might be very different from doing surgery here at home. But I found that surgery is in some respects an international language and we were able to have the procedure go very smoothly even though I do not speak Portuguese and the staff did not speak English. Reports are that the patient is doing very well. He will need some time before he can use the phrenic nerve pacemaker for long periods.... More About: Plastic Surgery , Surgery , Plastic

Breast Augmentation and Infections
2008-02-18 02:24:00 A recent study found that there is a higher rate of infection after breast augmentation than previously thought. Their noted rate of infection is higher than we have experienced doing breast augmentation in Los Angeles. But the study raises important issues. It is important to have the procedure done in a sterile operating room, best at a fully certified surgery center. We place patients on a short course of antibiotics after the surgery and give them by vein as part of the actual procedure; this is our protocol for all larger surgeries, such as tummy tuck in California.Below is a description of the study on this issue, which does have implications for plastic surgery Beverly Hills:The authors explained that infection rates at the incision site after the surgical removal of a breast (mastectomy) or other breast procedures range from 1% to 28%. "Given the state of fiscal constraints within the U.S. health care system, it is important to calculate the cost-... More About: Breast Augmentation , Breast , Infections , Augmentation
Botox for Men
2008-01-20 17:41:00 We do as many Botox procedures for men as for women. A recent study confirmed what we have also seen at our Los Angeles plastic surgery center: Men need more Botox than women. In this way, Botox is really just like all other procedures: plastic surgery for men simply has to do be done differently for men than for women. Below is a summary of the study--A review published in Dermatologic Therapy reveals that men can be treated with Botox for cosmetic procedures in the same way as women but require higher doses of Botox in all treatment areas. There has recently become a growing interest in cosmetic procedures by men. Although most practices see a majority of women, the number of male patients who seek treatment is slowly increasing. Men often require more units of Botox than women which may be because men have a greater muscle mass than women. Similarly, it has been a common clinical observation that larger, stronger men need more units per treatment are...
Assuring Safety of an Outpatient Surgery Center
2007-12-23 22:58:00 A surgery center should be among the safest places you can ever go in life. One way of working toward safety at a surgery center is for it to be carefully inspected and accredited. There are several organizations that do this. One such organization is called AAAHC. You should confirm your outpatient surgery center is certified, for all procedures such as rhinoplasty California. The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC/Accreditation Association), founded in 1979, has become the leader in ambulatory health care accreditation with more than 2,800 organizations accredited nationwide. The AAAHC accredits a variety of ambulatory health care organizations including endoscopy centers, ambulatory surgery centers, office-based surgery centers, student health centers, and large medical and dental group practices. The Accreditation Association serves as an advocate for the provision of high quality health care through the development of nationally r... More About: Safety , Surgery , Center , Urge
Saline vs. Silicone: Choosing Breast Implants
2007-12-10 04:42:00 Now that is has been a year since silicone breast implants have been approved by the FDA for general usage, there is certainly increased interest in silicone. More of our patients seeking breast augmentation in Los Angeles are asking about silicone implants. We still do the majority of our procedures with saline, since most women still prefer these when seeking Beverly Hills breast implants. However, interest in silicone likely will grow. Below is a pretty good comparison of the types of implants, reprinted from an informational organization: Offering an alternative to silicone, manufacturers chose saline as an implant filler. Saline implants also have a silicone outer shell (the same shell used in silicone gel-filled implants) and contain salt water. Saline vs. Silicone : Advantages and Disadvantages Saline breast implants, which were officially approved by the FDA in 2000, have some advantages and disadvantages over ... Plastic Surgery Around the Holidays
2007-11-29 05:27:00 The holiday season starting last week is always one of our busiest seasons for plastic surgery. We do a great many procedures during this six week period from Thanksgiving to New Year?s Day. There are several reasons why people come in for Los Angeles plastic surgery during the holiday season. People have time off from work or school and they find it convenient to take time out to have procedures such as Beverly Hills breast augmentation. They have time to make a leisurely recovery, with less pressure from work and other issues. This is an important issue. We find that people recover more quickly and easily and enjoy the overall process more if they go into it with the best possible mental attitude. The holiday period also means that family and other caregivers have free time. This helps with recovery as well, since there are people to lend a hand and make the process smooth and worry-free. Good care also leads to... More About: Holidays , Plastic Surgery , Surgery , Plastic , Urge

Rodeo Drive Mommy Makeover Continues to Make News
2007-11-07 04:46:00 Our Mommy Make over is getting a lot of attention recently. Within the last few weeks, we have done interviews about the procedure with local newspapers such as The Los Angeles Daily News . We also have done several interviews with the international media. We spoke with London's Sunday Express and Daily Mail newspapers. We also did interviews with German and French television. For most of these interviews, some of our patients also participated. We also had a mention in the New York Times about the topic. Previously our approach to the procedure was featured in popular a Japanese magazine. The Mommy Makeover topic garners interest because it does speak to larger trends in society. Women want to have work, family, and the shape they always wanted. In many ways, the procedure is reconstructive. People come in and they want to have the body they used to have, and to wear the clothes they used to wear. The procedure is ofte... More About: Drive , Rodeo
