Do you wear Spandex?
2008-04-02 05:03:00
I can’t take credit for this weeks question idea.  I was in the mood for a more lighthearted topic. I mean it is April Fools, right? So while sifting through my email, I came across Suzan’s question.  It just made me chuckle (sorry if you didn’t mean it that way Suzan). RoniDo you think the invention of spandex was a diet disaster? I do. It is SO easy to buy a medium and stretch and stretch to the point one does not realize if they have gained weight or not. The clothes just keep on stretching. I threw away ALL my pants with spandex and only wear pants with a button and zipper.  Believe it or not it really keeps me conscientious of my body and  happy  I’m not stretching pants to the max. What do you think? Throw them away?? So this weeks big question is… Do you wear Spandex ? Or do you agree with Suzan. Me? Well I honestly, I have a few pairs for the gym.  LOL but I’m in a pair of jeans just about ...

Grazing Leads to Permanent Weight Loss!
2008-04-01 05:19:00
Well, for me and this post it did anyway.  Let me explain. I don’t have much time tonight, it’s my long day at work. So I was just going to post my food journal and head to bed. Well, after analyzing my journal I realized it was a perfect example of what I call a grazing day (something I need to do on 12 hour work days) and I thought I’d use that has a simple topic and find a few articles that discuss grazing and weight loss, something that I attribute some of my success to. Then I found this great article about permanent weight loss. According to the article, the study found that people who lost an average of 60 pounds and kept it off for an average of five years hold seven things in common. They believe failure is to be expected, but that when you keep trying, ultimately you will be successful. Those who kept their weight off realize that deprivation leads to binging and binging leads to setbacks. They've learned to eat a wide variet...

Ask Roni - Family Support
2008-03-30 18:20:00
Hey Roni! A quick question...I know your husband isn't always on board with some of the food you cook, but have you ever had any issues with him supporting you on your weight loss?  Both my husband and I are doing WW, him a little more successfully than myself, but lately, when I've needed him to drag me off the couch, he's content to just go to the gym alone, or cook his own meal.  I know I'm the type of person who really needs support to be successful, and that's why I love reading your site, and other ww blogs/messageboards.  Just wondering if you ever had any resistance at home too, and if so, how did you get through the tough times? Coral Hi Coral! This is a GREAT question and actually one the husband and I **cough** discuss all the time.  See, he’s never had a weight problem. Actually he had the opposite problem in the past, not being able to gain weight in his younger years. I actually wrote about his skinniness in an older post...

Web Site Troubles
2008-03-29 20:44:00
You may have noticed my sites have been down inconsistently since midnight. This is due to upgrades at my hosting company (things like this shouldn't happen, but that's another story) Everything should be back to normal by tomorrow. Sorry about that. WeightWatchen community members - I am SO sorry. I meant to post about this last night and when I went to do it, the site was already down. All SHOULD be back to normal tomorrow (if not tonight) My apologies, -Roni Update @ 5PM: Everything seems to be up and back online, including the community and message boards! Again I'm sorry for the downtime. Oh! And the toddler and I posted a new video yesterday and I answered my first (easy) Ask Roni Question on GreenLiteBites. More to come!

Fighting the Feeling
2008-03-28 03:53:00
I weighed in today. BLEH! Up 2 pounds. It wasn’t a surprise considering my candy fiasco this past weekend.  I know I talk a big game with all my motivational self pep talks but honestly, I’m fighting that feeling of “ohhh eff it!” The weekend is here, I’ll probably go out tomorrow night and I already have plans with a friend for dinner Saturday night. Why not just go crazy, eat what I want (which is everything in sight), and start over on Monday? I’ll tell you why! “All or nothing”, “start tomorrow” thinking doesn’t work. It didn’t work for the 15 years I struggled with my weight and I know from experience that way of thinking causes the scale to go in the WRONG direction. Tomorrow is a new day, with new choices and each choice needs to be independent.  I can do this. First thing tomorrow is the gym and then I’m planning a fun video with the toddler. If it works out I’ll post it ...

Quick Updates – Go Ahead Ask.
2008-03-27 05:00:00
I’m watching The Brave One right now and really enjoying it so I’m going to make this quick. I finally added a feature to the site I wanted to for a long time. I get so many questions in my inbox, a lot of them similar, so instead of answering everyone individually I thought I’d respond a bit more publicly so everyone can benefit. Look up an see the Ask Roni link, there you can submit a question and I’ll try to answer 1 every week or so (depending on how many I get.) So, overall I had a good day, my points are a bit high but I did hit a spinning class. I’m thinking of having another Kashi Cookie now, I’m a little hungry. Have a good night! Update: I almost forgot. there may be some downtime on the site this weekend and my hosting company is updating their servers. Hopefully it won't be too long. Sensible Portions Multi Grain Mini Crisps
2008-03-27 04:25:00
I LOVE finding new snacks! Every time I shop it’s like a hunting expedition, my own little adventure. Today my hunting ground was BJ’s, a local wholesale club, and my prey was Sensible Portions Multi Grain Mini Crisps .  I’ve never heard of the brand before so I approached with extreme caution. I wasn’t going to be fooled by the frivolous displays of “whole grain” and “100 calories”. We all know these could possible be fake cries attempting to trap and confuse you into believing they are healthy.   To my surprise, upon inspecting my victim, I discover his claims to be of some merit. Made with whole grain corn, rice and oat flour these 100 calorie packs are a welcomed addition in the land empty calories, high fructose corn syrup and trans fats.   I tried both the apple cinnamon and cheddar flavors today.  The crisps are very light and airy, think Quaker Mini Delights but lighter and crisper. The flavor is ...
What dieting disasters have you fallen prey to?
2008-03-26 04:31:00
I’ve been thinking of writing a post about the worst dieting mishaps I personally tried and failed with but I decided to turn it into a question of the week. I truly believe we learn from our mistakes and boy have I made some doozies…    Skipping breakfast after a “binge” This is tough for me. If I eat too much one night then it’s just natural for me to want skip my next meal. Big mistake, huge. Then I get too hungry by lunch and totally pig out. By dinner I have the “oh, well, the day’s already ruined” attitude and eat 4-5 slices of pizza and the cycle continues. Thinking I can drink my meals. Yeah, this never works, I don’t care if the shake has 1000 calories in it, I’m not satisfied so I end up eating anyway. Popping a pill to control hunger.  I confess I did this, on more then one occasion. It’s a short term solution that i...

Can’t vs. Haven’t
2008-03-25 04:32:00
I’ve been thinking about those two words for the past couple of days. As I sit, still disgusted with myself after this weekend (and the chip incident tonight) I realized it’s March. Not only March but the end of March.  That’s three months since I made my new years goals. Let’s do a little assessment. Get back to my personal goal of 140lbs Ok there is really do reason I haven’t reached this goal yet. It’s not unrealistic to lose 5 pounds in 3 months. Since working out I feel like I eat more (which I should be) but more out of control.  Almost like my workouts give me some kind of unconscious permission to excessively snack.  This needs to stop. Climb the inclined (hard level) rock wall at the gym I can do this! I tried once and failed but I KNOW I can do it.  It’s going to take a lot of work and training but I’m up for the challenge. Do 1 Unassisted Pull Up This one scares me. I...

Easter Candy and Holiday Dinner Plans
2008-03-22 02:57:00
Bleh! I made the Easter baskets tonight and now I feel like a stuffed pig. It’s really my first nibbles at the Easter Candy . Thankfully I only bought one bag of jelly beans (which I don’t even like) and one bag of chocolate eggs. That’s it.  The rest of the basket is filled with trinket toys, play dough and lots of fun little gifts. SO much better then a basket of candy in my opinion. So tomorrow the guests start to arrive.  I’m TOTALLY not ready. But I’m getting there.  The baskets are done. I’ve been prepping vegetables all day. And I’m starting a cool yelatin (no, it’s not a typo it’s my new favorite dessert!) mold with a bunch of festive colors.  My plan is to serve it with fruit and cool whip for a fun light dessert. As for dinner, I’m going half traditional, half Italian. It’s kind of a family tradition.  I’m starting with some Zucchini & Red Pepper Salad with Spin...

...Case of the Munchies
2008-03-21 04:50:00
Said in the voice of one of my favorite movies of all time Office Space. (For some reason when I said it to myself I couldn't get this scene out of my head) I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I just want to EAT! Snack! Munch! Whatever. It’s not my normal snacking time either. *sigh* I think it’s stress related. But unconsciously stress related, if that makes sense.  I don't feel overly stressed but I have a lot of little things happening.  I’m resigning at the end of the semester, I’m trying to start a small business, I’m having childcare issues (may need to find a new provider) I have a ton of family coming in for Easter.  There’s just a lot going and I tend to want to eat for comfort. I also think I haven’t really figured out how to eat with my new workout schedule. Yesterday the spinning class, today cardio dance. I feel like I’m always hungry and I’m trying to figure out if it&rsquo...

What do you eat for breakfast?
2008-03-19 03:45:00
The toddler is responsible for inspiring this weeks question. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals, not because of the food but because I have made it routine for us to wake up and prepare something healthy every morning.  It’s a non-negotiable mommy/toddler time in the kitchen and today the toddler had his own idea on how he wanted to start the day. Now, I think we all know how important breakfast is for overall health and weight loss. Don’t we?  Just in case, here’s a really good write up. I’ve noticed since starting this journey I really only have a handful of breakfast ideas that I tend to put into rotation. Some may think they would get bored eating the same things over and over but on the contrary having a few “go to’s” takes any pressure off of deciding what to have on busy mornings.  It’s like my own personal menu. My morning options include Whole Grain Pancakes, eggs, oatmeal (like Apple Pie Oat...
YOU Can Make You Thin
2008-03-18 03:19:00
Did anyone see the new show “I Can Make You Thin”? on TLC?  I didn’t watch it but I saw the preview and read this article. A good friend of mine (who also lost a significant amount of weight) caught it last night and said the host, Paul McKenna actually had some interesting insights. His 4 Golden Rules of Weight Loss are… Eat whenever you are hungry Eat only what you want, never what you think you ‘should’ Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful Stop when you even think your body is full  I agree with him to a point, but #2 bugs me a bit. I mean if we all knew what we SHOULD be eating most of us wouldn’t need to lose weight in the first place. Right? Now 1, 3 and 4 are ok in my book. You shouldn’t be starving yourself, you should enjoy what you eat and you need to stop eating when you’re full.  Got it. But how does HE make ME thin? I mean the title REALLY bugs me.&n...
Holy Workout Batman!
2008-03-17 04:48:00
I can NOT believe I’m about to type this. Ya ready? Ok, here goes…. I worked out for 2 and ½ hours today. TWO AND HALF HOURS! And I loved every minutes of it. It was pure, uninterrupted ME time. No husband, no toddler, no email, no phone, nothing. Just me doing something good for myself and I feel fantabulous! What has happened to me? Seriously, 10 years ago I was the girl who would drive a half a mile to campus and get a 5 dollar parking ticket because I was too lazy to walk to my classes. LOL  It just makes me laugh. My friend, the trainer wants me to start working on a 10k run and I’m scared to death. She thinks I can do it and that the only thing that is holding me back is, well, me. I may be getting in better shape but I still have a hard time believing I can do it.  It’s all a confidence thing, I know that. But when you’ve told yourself something for 20 years (I can’t run, I’m not an athlete, yada yada) ...

Accountability & Awareness
2008-03-15 20:05:00
That’s what I needed.  If you read fairly regularly you know I haven’t been weighing in. Honestly I’ve been avoiding the scale. Mostly because I noticed some old habit creeping back in. Not that I think I gained any significant amount of weight but I just assumed the scale wouldn’t be my friend and I just didn’t want to deal with it.  I think a lot of us do that (well, I speak mostly for myself but, you know what I mean) We know we are starting to slip and instead of facing it we ignore it.  Then before we know it we’ve gained back a significant amount of weight, then we get depressed, eat more, gain more and the cycle continues.  I know this cycle very well. Well I’m not going to let it happen again! Especially not after 2 years. So yesterday morning on my way to a client meeting (one of my first for the new company!!) I decided to stop in a Weight Watchers meeting and weigh in. Now I knew I couldn’t...

I figured it out…
2008-03-14 03:03:00
It’s the sleep. Definitely the sleep. Or should I say lack of it.  This week I’ve been especially busy with the contest, a little stressed about my career choices and frankly, just going to bed waaay to late. I mean really TOO late. When I’m tired I snack. I snack to stay awake, I snack without realizing it and I’m more likely to eat just for the taste of it. So I’m putting a stop to it. I’m taking the night off but first, my menu.  I promised myself I’d track and I did. Have a good night! Food Points light yogurt 1 carrots 1 granola bar 2 Tortilla-Less Tortilla Soup with All-Bran Crackers 3 carrots 1 apple 1 night out - chinese night (won ton soup, spring roll, a little bit of fried rice & low mein)(estimate) 12 VitaBrownie Pizza (larger piece, estimating 2 servings) 4 Total...
Choices & Confessions
2008-03-13 04:32:00
First, the choice. As you may know it’s been awhile since I officially weighed in. (For those that don’t know, I only track weigh in at Weight Watcher meetings and I still try to go weekly.) Keyword there, TRY. Yeah, I haven’t been trying to hard in the last few weeks. My schedule has been just so freakin’ crazy! So today when I had the chance to leave work early I have a choice, gym or Weight Watchers. I chose the gym.  I’m sot sure it was the right choice but I can tell you the mindset that got me there… I haven’t worked out since Sunday and I like to go 4 times a week if possible so I need to squish it in when I can. There was a class starting at the gym where I could get some cardio in. Anytime I can get cardio in with a class I like to take it as I don’t really like cardio and classes are fun. I’ve been eating a bit more recently and I don’t really want to see the scale. Making all the Vit...

How do you incorporate your favorite foods?
2008-03-12 05:55:00
This Question of the week is inspired by the long awaited Whole Wheat Pizza Dough! That’s right people, I did it, I finally did it! I sucked it up and threw it out there. I learned a LONG time ago that I couldn’t stop eating my favorite foods if I was to be successful at losing weight. So I turned to creating or finding healthier, lighter alternatives. For example, I replaced chips with soy crisps, ice cream with frozen yogurt, American cheese with Laughing Cow and now, fast food pizza with my own homemade. Just think of the amount of calories and fat I save. Plus think of the health benefits of less salt, more fiber, whole grains, more veggies and overall just knowing what I’m putting into my body! So how do you incorporate your favorites? Have you made substitutions? Do you still splurge but eat less? Inquiring minds want to know!

Long Day-Short Post-Busy Momma
2008-03-11 04:59:00
I HATE Mondays!! I can’t wait until this semester is OVER! Sorry I’ve been MIA.  I’ve been working on the VitaMix contest, picking finalists and starting to make and archive the recipes. Plus I hit the gym twice this weekend for a cardio blast class and a weight training session with the trainer (I’m still sore). I’ve also been playing around with the whole-wheat pizza dough experiments. The husband is officially sick of pizza but now I have to make it one more time to practice and photograph for the site. I’m thinking a video would be fun but it will require a bit of editing since it needs some time to rise. Oh! and I’ve been working on my new company site. Did I tell you that? Oh yea, I did. Like waaaay back in November. LOL  Ummm all that and I work full time (for now) and have the toddler. What the eff am I thinking?!? Ok, I think it’s time for bed. ;~P Food Points banana ...

Cinnabon Cinnamon Crunch Cereal
2008-03-08 20:20:00
HOLY SMOKES! Have you seen this stuff? Last weekend, it caught my (and the husband’s) eye. I almost immediately dismissed it when I saw the Cinnabon name. We all know the monstrosity that is Cinnabon, don’t we? I mean I LOVE me a Cinnabon. There really is nothing like it, but weighing it at 730 calories I’d rather eat 2 whole meals!!   Anyway I do what I always do, turned the box around to

2 Years, 4 Days and Counting
2008-03-07 04:47:00
AWE MAN! I missed my anniversary. Four days ago it was my 2 year anniversary of becoming a Weight Watchers Lifetime member. March 3, 2006 I weighed in at my local Weight Watchers meeting at the unbelievable weight of 142.2 pounds. ME 142 lbs!  I’m still nodding my head in disbelief. Two years later, I’m holding steady.  Unfortunately my schedule hasn’t allow me to weigh in the last few weeks

This weeks question(s) were inspired by a few separate events that, some how, my brain collided together into the concept of preparedness. Bear with me as I try to make sense of this all... A few days ago I got an email asking my opinion on prepackaged food diets like Medifast or Chefs Diet . My reaction is, well, of YES you will lose weight on those plans because it’s portion
