The first Emancipation Proclamation
2009-09-22 15:44:00
“ALL PERSONS HELD AS SLAVES… SHALL BE FREE!”On this day, in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues his first Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the Confederated States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, shortly after Lincoln's inauguration as America's 16th president, he maintained that the war was about restoring the Union and not about slavery. He avoided issuing an anti-slavery proclamation immediately, despite the urgings of abolitionists and radical Republicans, as well as his personal belief that slavery was morally repugnant. Instead, Lincoln chose to move cautiously until he could gain wide support from the public for such a measure.NOTE: The Emancipation Proclamation was criticized at the time for freeing only the slaves over which the Union had no power. Although most slaves were not freed immediately, the Proclamation brought freedom to thousan...

The Femme Fatale

On this very same day in 1924, the American actress Lauren Bacall, was born Betty Perske in New York City. She has a timeless face and an unique presence resulting from an unparalleled glow and an innate sensuality. And I've heard Lauren Bacall is still alive and kicking in New York. I don't know: maybe it is the photograph... Her candid and sensual look... Boy, do I have a crush on her... Hell, yes, I’ve always had! Poor me, I have a crush on a 85 year- old respectful gorgeous granny. What a stupid indian I am!!!(OK, I'm feeling nostalgic and romantic, today. So what?!)

The wedding of the (last) century
2009-07-29 11:05:00
28 years ago today, on July 29 1981, in Britain, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, marries Lady Diana Spencer, at St Paul's Cathedral, which offered more seating than Westminster Abbey, generally used for royal nuptials. It was widely billed as a "fairytale wedding”, watched by a global television audience of 750 million. At the altar, Diana accidentally reversed the order of Charles's names, saying Philip Charles Arthur George instead of Charles Philip Arthur George. She also did not say she would "obey," which caused a sensation at the time.

The Horny Parrot
2009-07-27 15:05:00
A guy has a horny parrot. It's terrible. Every time he reaches into the cage, the bird humps his arm. One day, he invites his mother to tea and the bird, using an offensive language, keeps saying fool things, dirty words... Finally, he takes the parrot to a vet. The vet examines the bird extensively and says "Well, you have a horny male parrot. I have a sweet young female bird and, for fifty dollars, your bird can go in the cage with mine." The guy's parrot is listening and says "Come on! Come on! What are you waiting for?" Finally, the guy says “all right!” and hands over the fifty dollars. The vet takes the parrot, puts him in the cage with the female bird, closes the curtain. Suddenly, "Kwah! Kwah! Kwah!" Feathers come flying out of the cage. The vet says, "Holy gee!", runs across the room and opens the curtain. The male bird has the female bird down on the bottom of the cage, pulling out all her feathers and he keeps saying, "For fifty bucks, I want you naked. Naked!"

Lance “the legend” Armstrong
2009-07-24 18:04:00
Four years ago, on July 24 2005, American cyclist Lance Armstrong wins a record breaking seventh consecutive Tour de France title. One of the best cyclists ever, he has survived testicular cancer, a tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs, in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was not a good one. Armstrong retired from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but he recovered from cancer and miraculously came back to bike racing, returning to competitive cycling, in January 2009. He is in third place overall, in Tour de France 2009, behind Andy Schleck, who is second, and his teammate Alberto Contador, who leads. He also founded The LAF (Lance Armstrong Foundation) a nonprofit organization that provides support for people affected by cancer. He is amazing. I admire him for his strength, courage, perseverance and determination to stand up and carry on, no matter what.Well, I must ...

Rembrandt self-portrait, 1659 403 years ago today, on July 15, 1606, the great Dutch master, draftsman and etcher, Rembrandt van Rijn is born in Leidenthe son of a miller. His humble origins may help account for the uncommon depth of compassion given to all the subjects of his art. His paintings, many of them portraits or self-portraits, are characterized by luxuriant brushwork, rich color and a mastery of chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark). In addition to his many paintings, he produced 300 masterfully executed etchings and nearly 2,000 drawings.

Cristiano Ronaldo - simply the best!
2009-07-07 16:51:00
Fans packed Bernabeu Stadium to see Cristiano Ronaldo unveiled as Real Madrid player. There was barely an empty seat in the 80,354 capacity house. The Portuguese "mega crack", signed from Manchester United for a world record £80m (€94m, US$132m), making him the most expensive player in football/soccer history. The Portuguese star has a history of living up to the number on the back of his shirt. At Manchester United, he inherited the No. 7 shirt from David Beckham, which was also worn by United greats Eric Cantona and George Best. Wearing that shirt, Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances since 2003, a commendable achievement in one of the world’s top leagues. This time nº7 shirt belongs to Raul, the charismatic captain of the whites, so he’ll wear the coveted nº. 9 shirt worn by Real Madrid great Alfredo di Stefano (the legendary Argentinean, who won 5 consecutive European Champions Cups for Real Madrid).

Yep, this is a cannibal joke
2009-07-02 19:13:00
Two cannibals, a father and son, were elected by the tribe to go out and get something to eat. They walked deep into the jungle and waited by a path. Before long, along came this little old man. The son said, "Oh dad, there's one.""No," said the father. "There's not enough meat on that one to even feed the dogs. We'll just wait."Well, a little while later, along came this really fat man. The son said, "Hey dad, he's plenty big enough.""No," the father said. "We'd all die of a heart attack from the fat in that one. We'll just wait."About an hour later, here comes this absolutely gorgeous woman. The son said, "Now there's nothing wrong with that one dad. Let's eat her.""No," said the father. "We'll not eat her either.""Why not?" asked the son."Because, we're going to take her back alive and eat your mother!"

The Night of the Long Knives
2009-06-30 12:25:00
75 years ago today, on June 30, 1934, in Germany, the “Night of the Long Knives” or "Operation Hummingbird" took place - several hundred members of the SA (a paramilitary organization of the Nazi Party), including its leader Ernst Röhm and other senior members of the Nazi Party were killed by the SS on the orders of Adolf Hitler, for allegedly being involved in a plot to assassinate him. Also killed that night were hundreds of other perceived opponents of Hitler, including Kurt von Schleicher and Gregor Strasser. This destroyed all opposition within the Nazi Party, gave power to the brutal SS and it also showed the rest of the world what a tyrant Hitler was.
Bloggers Unite for a Free Iran

Democracy has never been served to the Iran ian people and Mr Ahmadinejad, who calls himself a friend of the people, keeps denying “his friends” basic democratic rights, such as freedom of speech and democratic elections. Severe violations of human rights, force and repression, injustice, and corruption allied to a non-existing democracy, have been a trademark of this regime. Enough is enough: It’s time to stop shooting, spanking and arresting peaceful protesters and to free those already detained. APACHE supports Iranian People and their fight for freedom!

Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)
2009-06-26 19:10:00
Mega popstar Michael Jackson has died after suffering from a suspected heart attack, however the cause of his death is unknown until the results of the autopsy are known. The King of Pop suffered a cardiac arrest at his home, in Holmby Hills, and was taken to the UCLA medical centre, where he was pronounced dead. His family confirmed Michael’s death, at the age of 50, after doctors worked for more than an hour to try to revive him. No matter whether we liked him or not, we have to admit that he was a very talented artist, an excellent composer, dancer and singer. He sold over 750 million records worldwide and won 13 Grammy Awards, I guess. The star is dead, the myth is born.

Goodbye, Master Caine!
2009-06-04 19:08:00
The 72-year-old actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" (1972-1975) who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead, early today, in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his luxury hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide. Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie.I grew up watching the television series ?Kung Fu?, in which the half-Chinese Shaolin priest (Master of Dragon and Tiger) Kwai Chang Caine travels throughout the American West on a quest for redemption. So here is my humble homage to David, who made me believe, when I was a kid, that, when you fight for a good cause, you cannot quit before it is over and all fights can be won.

20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre
2009-06-03 20:10:00
With protests for democratic reform entering their seventh week, led mainly by students and intellectuals, the Tiananmen Square protest began after the mid-April death of Hu Yaobang, a Chinese leader, who had supported reforms. Students mourning Hu, gathered by the 'Goddess of Democracy' statue at Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, on May 30, 1989 and launched an impromptu demonstration. By May, close to a million people had filled the square. The Chinese government ordered its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing's Tiananmen Square at all costs. Tanks rumbled through the capital's streets late on June 3 as the army moved into the square from several directions, randomly firing on unarmed protesters. By nightfall, on 4th June, Chinese troops had forcibly cleared the square, killing hundreds and arresting thousands of demonstrators and suspected dissidents. What has changed in 20 years? As we all know, human rights violations, in the People's Republic of China, remain systematic ...
