The first Emancipation Proclamation
2009-09-22 15:44:00 “ALL PERSONS HELD AS SLAVES… SHALL BE FREE!”On this day, in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues his first Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the Confederated States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, shortly after Lincoln's inauguration as America's 16th president, he maintained that the war was about restoring the Union and not about slavery. He avoided issuing an anti-slavery proclamation immediately, despite the urgings of abolitionists and radical Republicans, as well as his personal belief that slavery was morally repugnant. Instead, Lincoln chose to move cautiously until he could gain wide support from the public for such a measure.NOTE: The Emancipation Proclamation was criticized at the time for freeing only the slaves over which the Union had no power. Patrick Swayze dies at 57
2009-09-15 13:22:00 Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008, Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into moviegoers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died yesterday from the disease, at the age of 57. He passed away peacefully with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months. May his soul rest in peace! One day, he invites his mother to tea and the bird, using an offensive language, keeps saying fool things, dirty words... Finally, he takes the parrot to a vet. The vet examines the bird extensively and says "Well, you have a horny male parrot. I have a sweet young female bird and, for fifty dollars, your bird can go in the cage with mine." 2009-07-24 18:04:00 Four years ago, on July 24 2005, American cyclist Lance Armstrong wins a record breaking seventh consecutive Tour de France title.One of the best cyclists ever, he has survived testicular cancer, a tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs, in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and his prognosis was not a good one. Armstrong retired from racing on July 24, 2005, at the end of the 2005 Tour de France, but he recovered from cancer and miraculously came back to bike racing, returning to competitive cycling, in January 2009. He is in third place overall, in Tour de France 2009, behind Andy Schleck, who is second, and his teammate Alberto Contador, who leads.He also founded The LAF (Lance Armstrong Foundation) a nonprofit organization that provides support for people affected by cancer.He is amazing. Also killed that night were hundreds of other perceived opponents of Hitler, including Kurt von Schleicher and Gregor Strasser.This destroyed all opposition within the Nazi Party, gave power to the brutal SS and it also showed the rest of the world what a tyrant Hitler was.

20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre
2009-06-03 20:10:00 With protests for democratic reform entering their seventh week, led mainly by students and intellectuals, the Tiananmen Square protest began after the mid-April death of Hu Yaobang, a Chinese leader, who had supported reforms. Students mourning Hu, gathered by the 'Goddess of Democracy' statue at Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, on May 30, 1989 and launched an impromptu demonstration. By May, close to a million people had filled the square. The Chinese government ordered its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing's Tiananmen Square at all costs.
