2008-05-13 06:19:00

"What makes you think I don't have proof? What makes you think I don't have documents? "If I do submit the proof behind my writing, they will arrest me under the OSA. You think I'm stupid?" he asked the assembled journalists. ...

2008-05-05 03:52:00
FM: Received this message from a reader of a possible scam."Dear All,I would like to share a real life story with all my friends and especially all my colleagues and all Aprilbank* (name of the bank is witheld to avoid my ass being sued) account holders. This incident happened on today evening (1 April 2008). I went to the PJ State (Also known as PJ New Town) Aprilbank* to withdraw RM500. Unfortunately for me, only 9 RM50 notes came out instead of 10.What happened was, one of the RM50 notes was folded exactly in half and placed at a corner of the stack (Please refer to the attached pictures showing how two RM50 notes can be counted as three).I was so upset because I have no proof that the ATM did not give me the correct amount. After much hesitation, I finally decided to call Aprilbank* to complain about the incident knowing that I may not get back my money. But at least I can caution them of such incident. When I told of my situation to the Aprilbank* Customer Service Representati...

Travellers impressed to see Lim flying economy class
2008-05-04 18:07:00
PENANG: Some things have not changed with Lim Guan Eng, although he is now the Penang Chief Minister. And among that is his penchant for economy class air travel. As the chief executive of Penang, Lim is entitled to a business class seat but he is having none of it.As travellers queued to get into the airplane, many are surprised to see Lim standing in line with them, just like in the days before the DAP wrested Penang from the Barisan Nasional in the March general election. Among those who were surprised to see the Penang CM in economy class were songbird Ning Baizura and her manager Vernon Kedit Jolly, who were at KL International Airport last Wednesday. Jolly was so moved that he wrote about it on his blog, which spurned off reactions among other bloggers. Lim, who has adopted a “no formalities” approach since assuming the CM’s post, said he said he had told his staff to book him economy class tickets whenever he needed to fly. “I hope to lead by example. If I can reach m...

Theft of RM40 scrap metal behind blackout in Sabah
2008-04-23 17:02:00
KOTA KINABALU: Metal thieves blacked out almost the entire state of Sabah on Monday – for a mere RM40. It is believed they removed steel pieces from a 132kV transmission tower that led to its collapse, triggering a major power blackout lasting nearly six hours from 6.41pm and affecting 300,000 consumers. Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd managing director Baharin Din told a press conference yesterday that 20 pieces of steel holding the tower at Suang Parai area here had been removed.“They could probably get about RM40 in scrap value but they caused huge losses and inconvenience to the people of Sabah,” Baharin said adding that the tower cost RM400,000 to build. Economic losses caused by the six-hour blackout would be even bigger. Baharin said the transmission line between Kayu Madang and Universiti Malaysia Sabah collapsed, leading to a domino effect, tripping all SESB and independent power plants connected to the various grids. “We lost about 500MW of power and 90% of the state was...

'Oral Me' toothpaste
2008-04-14 03:21:00
What's in the name?A toothpaste sold at a hypermarket here, has raised a few eyebrows as well as having drawn laughter as its brand name was considered to be rather suggestive by some people. The brand? 'Oral -Me'.The product is a toothpaste manufactured by a Kulim, Kedah, based company.Melissa Leong, 28, from Sabah, felt the brand name carried sexual connotation."Manufacturers should think twice when naming their products," she said. Kuala Lumpur based advertising executive Martin Voon asked if the manufacturer understood the phrase while coining the brand name."I'm shocked. Such words are normally found on a spoof,” he said.Kieran Sharkey, an English teacher in a college, said the name does not carry a positive connotation and could be misconstrued."With the amount of information available to the younger generation, I feel they can interpret it wrongly. Manufacturers should be careful otherwise they will be made fun of," he laughed. The company could not b...

KLIA Heist: CCTVs not switched on during shoot-out
2008-04-11 05:13:00
KUALA LUMPUR: The closed-circuit television cameras outside the Kuala Lumpur International Airport departure hall were not switched on during the shoot-out. And it was also revealed that the off-duty policeman, who was initially thought to have been caught in the crossfire, was involved in the shoot-out with the gunmen. The policeman, however, was hit twice and his police-issued semi-automatic pistol was taken by the gunmen. Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Mohd Bakri Zinin said checks showed the CCTVs were switched on again after the five-minute shoot-out. "It has hampered police investigations. We were hoping that the footages from the CCTVs could have provided us with information about the gunmen," Bakri said. "What's the point of having CCTVs if they are not switched on? It is not for decorative purposes." Bakri declined to elaborate on the matter but said police were working on several leads, including photofits of the suspects, b...

Hell explained by Chemistry Student
2008-04-10 12:04:00
FM: Received this email from a friend. Funny as hell (no pun intended):The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term.The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, and via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well:Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in t...

Women in jeans 'cannot be raped'
2008-03-10 04:07:00
Italy's highest court has ruled that a woman wearing jeans cannot be raped. The Supreme Court of Appeal in Rome on Wednesday overturned a rape conviction, saying that the supposed victim must have agreed to sex because her jeans could not have been removed without her consent.A court in the southern town of Potenza had convicted a driving instructor of raping his 18-year-old pupil. The instructor, aged 45 and identified only as Carmine, had been sentenced to 34 months' jail. His defence had argued that the young woman - identified as Rosa - had consented to sex, a version of events which the woman strongly denied. The Supreme Court ruled that it was impossible to remove a pair of jeans "without the collaboration of the person wearing them", and that the young woman must therefore have consented to sex.In a judgement likely to anger women's rights organisations, the rape conviction was reversed.Driving instructors in Italy have a reputation, deserved or undeserved, for molesting young...
