Happy Blog Day to me
2009-01-23 06:00:00
Six years ago on this very day, I saw something about "blogs" on the news and said, "Hey, I can do that!" And, I did. I wrote about all 3 kids playing band instruments in the next room and Busy D. wasn't even 1 yet. I was astounded when someone read it. And I'm even more astounded that I'm still doing it and someone is still reading. Wait, you're here, right? Hello? *taps computer and then gets mad after leaving fingerprints on screen* I could wax eloquent about my time here, but I'll spare you this time. The first person to say something like, "Why start being eloquent now?" gets a knuckle sandwich and has to leave my blog party without a goodie bag.

Holiday Road

Are ya'll having fun? Our trip to the beach is drawing to a close. Many of you know I'm here on vacation on my 10th Annual Girl's trip. It's been rather low key, but we've had a nice time. The trip down was uneventful, though I think I scared my passengers (who don't have teenagers) with my vast knowledge of the lyrics to some pretty ghetto-fabulous musical selections. We left town in the evening and drove into the wee hours, so I had to keep myself awake somehow. (It's a Kodak moment, let me go and get my camera, all I wanna know is...) I apparently overdid the coffee by about a cup because I was pretty much vibrating when we got here at 2am and no one appreciated my dilemma, nor would they rearrange the furniture with my after a quick run down the beach. OK, lying about the run since I'm pretty sure my left knee is going to fall off. Something is all kinds of wrong with it, but well...whatever. Other than that, there's been some shopping, some eating, some laz...

Free Obama card sets
2009-01-19 04:53:00
Despite what you read, it's neither the Second Coming, nor is it Armageddon (y'all just calm down, now), but if you haven't heard, there's a Presidential Inauguration coming up. Inaugurations are pretty cool in and of themselves and there's no denying this one is historic. I'm passing along word of these free Obama card sets (there is a small S&H fee) for a friend, so go check them out! They are top quality cards, printed full color with gold metallic ink on both sides and one of the cards is original artwork created by a digital artist just for the set and he is hand signing them. The goal is to let everyone have a piece of history, without having to shell out a lot of hard earned cash to do it. So, if you are so inclined, check them out!

I'm attempting to type an entry using my phone. I'm at volleyball and bored. Too cold to go anywhere and I am dreading a potentially awkward conversation with someone. Bored. Bored and cold. I even had to get out my super secret granny reader glasses to do this. Don't tell anyone I have these. So, now I'm going to look for "publish" and see if this works or not.
More on blogging friends

A few days ago, I talked about how I sometimes have difficulty finding the words to refer to you guys, my friends inside the computer. Not that I want to make a distinction, but every now and then, the linguistics of the whole thing about friends I can't see gets interesting and there needs to be a word or phrase to describe it. Today, I wish that one of my blogging friends was someone I can see. This person is going through a really, really tough time. Stuff beyond my comprehension and I have never wished more that there was something I could do. Don't know where I'm going with that other than it's occupied a large portion of my mind for a couple of days now, and I feel so helpless yet I would have a hard time explaining it to the people I can see.

From my dad, purveyor of all things e-mail forwarding: When everyone on earth was dead, and waiting to enter Paradise, God appeared and said: "I want the men to make two lines." "One line for the men who were true heads of their household, and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women and I want all the women to report to St. Peter." Soon, the women were gone, and there were two lines of men. The line of the men who were dominated by their wives was 100 miles long, and in the line of men who truly were heads of their household, there was only one man. God said, 'You men should be ashamed of yourselves, I created you to be the head of your household! You have been disobedient and have not fulfilled your purpose! Of all of you, only one obeyed. Learn from him. With that, God turned to the one man and asked, 'How did you manage to be the only one in this line?' And, the man replied, 'My wife told me to stand here.'

Live from Weekday World
2009-01-08 15:27:00
I work full time. Yes, yes, I know..."Why does she even have kids?" "Raise your own kids!" (Insert favorite working mother cliche here, I'll wait). I mean, duh, they can all reach the microwave, what do they need me for? Anyway, that's not the point here. When I'm at work, there's apparently an entire subculture that is very active in the daytime hours during the week and I never get to see it. I'm at the bagel place in suburbia since my dad is determined he's going to drive himself to his MRI today, (but I'm going to meet him there just in case this turns out to be one of those "good idea at the time" things), so I'm hanging out here until it's time to go, and this is really interesting. Observations about this weekday subculture I find myself in at the moment: - I don't need Facebook. Everyone I need to catch up with is here. - Don't any of you people have a job? Where did I go wrong? - Someone dressed for work using a laptop is apparently a freak and even s...

The other day on Twitter, I made a remark about Twitter-speak not always translating well to "real life" friends. Rightly so, Rex jokingly replied, "What are we? Chopped liver?" Over the years, many a blogger has waxed eloquent about how online acquaintances may or may not be defined as "friends" and people will continue to analyze that thought for many years to come. I've always struggled with how to refer to you guys inside the computer relative to the friends I can see and touch. Most of the time, I have no need to differentiate, and if I do have the need, it's mostly whining when they don't "get" me. At any rate, this past Saturday night I talked with my friends on Twitter. Note there was no need to put that in quotes. My dad had to go the the ER and I was at home with a bunch of little boys who don't understand anxiety. Busy Dad took him, so he was away and Busy Girl wasn't home, but I wasn't about to dump that on her, anyway. Since my mother died a couple of...

Happy New Year!
2009-01-02 00:15:00
I sure wish I had something wise to say about new beginnings and all that jazz. "Yay, I don't have to work!" is as good as it gets this afternoon. We didn't do a darn thing last night. Well, I did give Windows Movie Maker a spin: a. He was fine. b. Dog ate the helmet. Fo' real. Other than that, I had to keep myself awake to go pick up Busy Girl at a party 30 minutes away at 1am. Today has been lazier than lazy. I may or may not still be in my pajamas, I'll never tell. The automotive fairy visited yesterday. I got a brand new set of tires and wonder of wonders, the mystery noise disappeared. I promise it wasn't a road (as in tires on pavement) noise when I asked you about it. I have no idea what happened, I didn't ask the mechanic, I didn't point it out lest it cost more. However you slice it, the car's not making the racket and I no longer feel like I'm about to die a tire-related fire-y death when I drive, so it's all good. Almost good to go for my tr...

That's all I need. A handheld GPS and a TV. Oh, and a mattress. That's all
2008-12-29 21:37:00
Internet, I need your advice. I'm screaming into 2003 and on the lookout for a couple of things. First, I have decided I want to learn about geocaching, I think the boys would like it. I don't want to spend a ton of money, is there a good, cheap cost-efficient hand-held GPS device out there? Do I need anything besides that? Also, our main television in the house is vintage 1988. Yes, indeedy. We are not early adopters. (See also: mattress, >20 years old) It just won't die, but it is getting bad enough that I the kids can't see their video games anymore. So, I guess we'll be getting one of them there flat screen thingys. So, um...what do I do? Are there different kinds? What else do I need to know about buying a flat screen TV? I need a TV, something to put it on, and then what? I am but a simple volleyball mom, I do not understand your advanced audiovisual ways. Use small words.

Christmas Leftover recipes

I get a lot of searches for this, so here are some Christmas leftover recipe ideas: Ideas for leftover candy canes and even more ideas for leftover candy canes. Leftover turkey recipes. Leftover ham recipes. I'd post some for leftover beef tenderloin recipes, but there's no such thing. I ate all the beef tenderloin.

In honor of this strange light in the sky, I shall blog. We've not seen the sun here in a couple of years, months, weeks or something, so this is most unfamiliar. OK, that and I'm trying to distract myself from the Titans-Colts game. Unbelievable. I know it makes no difference for the playoffs, but still... I am, however watching the game in my new Chris Johnson jersey. Christmas was low key, but nice enough. I hope you and yours had a nice time. We did the usual stuff, but this was the year I finally got the beef tenderloin right. It was amazing. I love me. Now we're dealing with the restlessness of vacation. MIL is here, kids itching to go somewhere, house needs cleaning, you know the drill. I gotta go back to work tomorrow, doesn't sound so bad, actually. Busy D. has basketball practice today. I really need to persuade him to do a layup. He can do it, but he won't. His patented "free for all" long shot is a crowd pleaser, but this year he's not the o...

School daze
2008-12-22 07:20:00
So, I've had a kid in high school for a semester now. It's one of those things that simultaneously feels like it began yesterday and 100 years ago, yet it's going all too quickly. I hear friends talk about their kids in college and it seems so foreign to me until I realize that it's like on the horizon for us. Busy D. and I went to a college basketball game last night and we won pretty handily, so the starters were taken out toward the end of the game. I can tell I'm getting older, I was nervous for the freshmen. People were leaving early, but we stayed until the end because I wanted someone to be there to watch these kids, only a few years older than my daughter, play. Anyway, I've noticed that high school has occupied most of my brain space that is reserved for kids' school matters. Normally, I'm all over the school thing, parties, schedules, supplies needed, happenings, etc., but, since Busy Girl began high school, I'm doing well to remember to send lunch for ...

Merry scaled-back Christmas
2008-12-20 21:16:00
One sign of a recession during Christmas is the distinct lack of Christmas cards. I love to get Christmas cards and we have this holder thingy that's always overflowing each year and this year, we have very few. Now, mind you I haven't sent Christmas cards out yet because I'm lazy and just ordered them about 6 days ago and they're not here yet, but dammit, I want your cards! But, maybe people will be surprised by their "Happy December 28th!" cards? Anyway, I need cards, I like to look at pictures and know how you're doing. I even like those family Christmas letters. One of the mixed blessings about the recession is that I was easily able to get around town and park on this Saturday before Christmas to do my errands that included a little bit of gift shopping. I will admit, though that it was a bit creepy to see plenty of parking at Toys R Us. OK, I got everywhere easily except for Walgreen's. Seriously, people, what is it about Walgreen's? I needed to pick up a...

2008-12-19 06:18:00
One of the few Christmas gifts I've managed to get is for my dad, it's a book about Abraham Lincoln (he's a history teacher). My dad's the teacher, not Lincoln. Though Lincoln may very well have been a good teacher, but it doesn't matter now because he's, you know, dead. Actually, he may not be dead. I think I gave him my cart at Wal-Mart the other night. Seriously, I think it was Abe. Huh? Oh, anyway, I got my dad a book about Lincoln and worked really hard at finding several items for a week long trip he's taking to D.C. next month. I talked to him on the phone today: Me: "You done with exams?" My dad: "Almost. Things are winding down. I got a couple of Christmas gifts from some students, today." Me: "What did you get?" My dad: "Some food, a Trader Joe's gift card and two books about Abraham Lincoln." Me: "Huh. Imagine that." My dad: "Oh, hey by the way, I'm not going to Washington anymore." Me: "Of course you're not." I suppose he's just going to h...
Does she know it's Christmast ime at all?
2008-12-18 14:54:00
Is it just me, or does it really not seem like Christmas? I'm waiting for that holiday excitement feeling inside and it's just not there. I'm not despondent, depressed, bitter or (much) more harried than usual, I'm literally just not feeling it. I want to have that feeling, I like Christmas. I'm wondering if it's just a sign of the times, or if it has something to do with my advancing age. We're doing our regular Christmas stuff, albeit without my MIL (long story) and I'm sure a lovely time will be had by all, but thus far, it feels like a lot of preparations are being made for a Thursday. Eh, whatever. I guess it will get better. In the meantime, your gift to me can be to go enter the 3 contests I have going on over at Busy Mom Reviews. But, hurry. They end tomorrow night.

Trying to think of something more original than, "Is this thing on?"
2008-12-16 04:16:00
Argh. I have no idea why I can't seem to write anymore. I keep thinking, "I'll do it when I have time to sit down and concentrate." I know, it's cute how I think I'll be able to do anything of the sort for at least the next 12 years. I also spend way too much time on Twitter which kinda makes me think I've blogged, and I really haven't. At any rate, just sitting here waiting for the big ice storm of aught-eight feeling rather smug at having gone to the grocery because we actually needed groceries rather than having gone as a reaction to the forecast. The kids have exams, but are convinced they're going to be out of school tomorrow, so we're chasing them around the house trying to get them settled in to study. I could wax on ("wax off" /Karate Kid) about not being ready for Christmas, not feeling the holiday spirit, etc. but that's nothing you can't find on most any blog lately. I will, however, bitch about being cold right now because, well, I'm cold right n...
