2008-01-06 19:50:00 The Titans and the Chargers meet again in the first round of the (NFL) playoffs. Seems that Matthew thinks those dudes with the lightning bolts are going to win, and, we've got a little bet going. OK, so we don't even know who our quarterback is going to be, and, there's no one left to actually catch the passes the mystery quarterback will be throwing. Details. RIP Major Andrew Olmsted
2008-01-06 05:01:00 Andrew Olmstead, a Major in the United States Army, and, blogger was killed in Iraq. Now, I know you find this hard to believe, but, I'm not a big fan of political blogs, I really don't care about your stance on the war in Iraq, and, I just kind of stumbled into it, but, this is a must read. Britney Spears' standoff with police and hospitalization
2008-01-04 15:23:00 Wow. Britney Spears holding her kids hostage? She wouldn't give her kids back to Kevin Federline after visitation, and, was taken by ambulance to the hospital because she was under the influence of something. There's also some rumor that one of the kids had to go to the hospital, too. Someone has got to help this girl. "Involuntary commitment" are the words that come to my mind, but, I only know what I read. Very, very sad. ADDED: Waitaminnit..what happened to the court appointed monitor for Britney's visits with her kids? Maybe I missed something somewhere. More About: Celebrities , Police
New policy: they can only have orphans for friends
2008-01-03 13:57:00 Other parents? Y'all are weird, sometimes. I'm intimidated as hell by the parents of a friend of Busy Girl's. They're very wealthy, and, nice enough on the surface, but, I feel like I'm being judged and am on the verge of doing something wrong all the time, I just have no idea what it is. They're older and have several other kids and their attitude is a weird combination of simultaneously seeming like they were done with parenting years ago, and, giving you the vibe that they won't hesitate to call the police on you if their kid isn't home on time or something is not to their liking. I feel sorry for this kid in a way, they don't really go out of their way to take her to things kids do, so, I have been trying to make sure that we offer her rides so she doesn't miss out. The other night, this kid laid into Busy Girl about a situation that Busy Girl really had no control over, and, didn't do anything wrong. Seriously, Busy Girl was clearly not at fault, but, this ... Conjuring up a snow day
2008-01-02 16:48:00 *Crack* *Cr-unch* "Watch out!" whispered Busy Girl as I made my way across her bedroom to tell her good night last night. "What was that?" I asked, afraid to move any further, for fear of...well, I don't know, but, you never know what's in her room. "Crayons", she replied very matter of factly, as if everyone had crayons on the floor surrounding their bed. "Okaaay..." "It's to make it snow". I hadn't heard that one before. Color me informed. Hey, when you live in the South, you do what you can when the word "snow" is bandied about and you want a day off from school. So, add this one to the things one must do in order to conjure up a snow day off from school. Other time tested elementary (and now middle school, apparently) snow day rituals: - Wearing your pajamas inside out and backward (bonus: not only will you likely still have to go to school, you won't get much sleep, either) - Putting a white crayon in the freezer and putting it under your pillow before bed ... The Pants Bowl
2008-01-01 05:45:00 I think I'd like to name a college football bowl game since it appears that any ol' person or organization can do it. Take a look at the 2007-08 Bowl schedule. Come on, The "San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl"? I'm going to name one the "Busymom.net Blogging Pants Bowl", and, I'm inviting teams based on their nicknames. I select the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and the Trinity Christian Trolls. Actually, I lost my blogging pants somewhere in this house, so, I guess it'll have to the the Busymom.net Memorial Blogging Pants Bowl. More About: Sports

New Year's Eve blathering
2007-12-31 17:02:00 New Year's Eve. Once upon a time, that was the biggest social event in my life. Not that there were all that many entries to choose from in my social life, but, relatively speaking, NYE ranked right up there. And, I didn't go out to the bars, or, to lavish parties, but, I lived to spend time with friends. Actually, one time I did go to the Eve of Janus, and, was bored to tears. Sorry, Tri-Delts. It was you, not me. Anyway, I don't remember much about what I did on New Year's Eve as a child, probably not much, my parents weren't big partiers. As a matter of fact, I probably hold some record for being the youngest NYE fuddy-duddy ever, as I was probably taught to say, "There are crazies out there, we should just get to bed and it will be over tomorrow", from birth. That's the primary reason I try to make NYE fun for my kids, I want them to have some good New Year memories with our family before they are old enough to spend New Year's Day vomiting and wondering why all ...
Post-Chirstmas, the * Edition and a Tiny Prints Coupon Code
2007-12-29 04:41:00 Busy D. (age 5) had basketball practice tonight. We left the house around 5pm, and, I apparently wasn't going fast enough to suit him as he loves him some basketball practice. He asked me to hurry and I said I was going as fast as I could, but, people were coming home from work, and, there was traffic. His very serious reply? "You really should have taken the Interstate, then". Speaking of his basketball team, this oughta be interesting. His coaches are saints, and, practices have been, um, challenging. It's not often I can say Busy D. (whom Busy Girl has taken to calling "Stitch") is the best behaved kid in the group, but, we'll take it. After practice, the coach asked me what I thought he needed to do (I have no idea why, I think it's either because he's mistaken me for someone who knows basketball since I was shooting some before practice, or, I'm the only one who'll correct my kid), and, I replied, "The only thing you can do, go get a beer." *****************... Happy Festivus!
2007-12-23 16:03:00 A Merry Festivus to all! Hang on, I'll get my list of grievances together, and, well, every day is a feat of strength around here, so, I'll just choose one. OK, I choose folding the laundry while Busy D. sits in the middle of it working a puzzle. Now, where did I put that pole? But, then again, it's also my MIL's birthday, likely not a good time to air grievances. More About: Happy

Guess what?
2007-12-20 15:32:00 Christmas is on Tuesday and not Wednesday like I had it in my head. Awesome. I live to take 12 teens ice skating and then have them to spend the night, tonight. I'm overjoyed at the thought of having to finish Christmas shopping when we're already out of Christmas money. Still need to wrap every gift we have? Check. Why yes, we DO have friends coming from out of town, MIL's birthday Sunday, and, her arrival with unknown quantity of Busy Dad siblings for an unspecified number of days. Work still kicking my ass. Thanks for asking. Family is weird about wanting Christmas dinner on, you know, Christmas, so, I suppose a trip to the grocery is in order. Then? As if that weren't enough, they want it cooked, too. It's the most wonderful time of the year. More About: Guess
Future famous blogger?
2007-12-19 13:44:00 Busy D. and I sometimes make up stories at night, especially if we've gotten to bed too late to read a book. Many times, the stories have recurring characters as he tends to name every character "Skittle", but, last night, a new one was introduced. Seems that "Scoble" the Spider was on the main stage in his mind. I don't know where it came from, but, as far as I know he hasn't been reading Scobleizer. But, then again, anything is possible with this kid. He may have just wanted me to believe he's visiting the Wiggles on the Internet, but, he and Robert Scoble really have some Web 2.0 business together somewhere. Life lesson learned
2007-12-18 13:37:00 There's a situation at school affecting Busy Girl, and, it results in her not to be able to do something she really wants to do. The hard truth is that the whole scenario is grossly (independent observation would confirm it, it's not just me grousing) unfair, but, we can't really change it. However, it's also a good lesson for her, I guess. Most things come pretty easily to her, so, not getting something she wants might be a good character building experience for her, and, she needs to learn that life isn't fair. I hate it that it's affected her 8th grade year, especially since she's worked hard for several years for this moment, and, it's not going to happen, and, she's as upset and angry as I've ever seen her. As we were talking about it last evening, I reminded her that she couldn't change it, but, that she could change how she reacts to it. She responded by reciting the Serenity Prayer. Her deceased grandmother (my mother), who was a Friend of Bill, would hav... More About: Life , Kids , Lesson , Learned
Christmas all about me me!
2007-12-17 22:10:00 Your Sista tagged me for a Christmas meme, and, since I am trying to stop being She Who Sucks at Doing Memes, I'll play along in a timely manner: 1. Wrapping or gift bags? I love the idea of gift wrap, but, since I am notorious for marathon wrapping sessions on Christmas Eve, despite my best intentions, I'll go with gift bags. 2. Real or artificial tree? Either is OK. I grew up with an artificial tree mostly due to my mother's fear of spontaneous combustion (the tree, not her), so, I always had a real tree when I was on my own. However, I'm pretty sure the kids are allergic to the real tree, but, we get one anyway. 3. When do you put up the tree? I hate doing it too early, but, usually around the second week of December, or, whenever Busy Girl gets around to decorating it. 4. When do you take the tree down? Bwahahahaha....I admit we've had a St. Patrick's Day tree before. But, please know the tree is in the not-oft-used living room, and, that was the year my dad had a ...

Not our kind, dear.
2007-12-16 18:11:00 Yesterday was one of those 3 kids, 3 activities, same time, 2 parents kind of days. We had it all planned out: Busy Dad was going to take Busy Boy to Cotillion and then go up the Interstate and catch Busy Girl's basketball game (she was already there) and bring her home to study for exams despite her insistence that she has no need to study. On Friday, Busy Dad had arranged a ride home from Cotillion for Busy Boy since I was going to be at basketball practice with Busy D. However, the dad of the ride home said, "Call on Saturday to double check the plans with my wife since she'll be the one going". We left them a message on Saturday morning, but, they weren't home. I figured they'd call eventually, it wasn't a big deal. Since no one in this house except me was born with a "hurry up" mode, it was past time for everyone to leave, yet, to no one's real surprise, we were still here. I had been cleaning out my closet (hey, it was really bad in there. I found a fourth kid i...
Living life one cliche at a time
2007-12-14 06:34:00 Too much of a cliche to say that I've been busy, no? The place that issues my paycheck has been out of control this week. Long story, but, it's an event similar to the one that rhymes with "flaudit", and, the "when I was all" and "they were all", and, "you suck" event just blew the hell right up. Then, there's the whole end of the year at school madness coupled with basketball games all over God's green earth during the week and on Saturdays, too. There's also some online stuff that's bugging me, not to mention some obligations I have in that realm that aren't being fulfilled the way they should be right now. Busy D.'s kindergarten Christmas program is tomorrow. It's a big deal as far as these things go, it's hard to believe it's already here for him. This is the only year that all 3 of the kids will be in the same school, and, the older ones and I used to talk about "some day, Busy D. will go into school with you and he'll be in the kindergarten play" etc., and,... Why kids shouldn't have video cameras
2007-12-10 15:32:00 I'm alive, but, I'm talking like a 1-900 operator on the adult find a friend network. Hmmm...extra income... Or, a foghorn. I think I might sound more like a foghorn than a phone sex attendant. Bringing snotty back
2007-12-08 16:22:00 I have a cold and my back is acting up. If I lie down, I can't breathe. If I sit up, I feel like I'm going to break in half. If you need me, I'm the one in the straight-backed dining room chair with the nuclear strength heating pad that is older than I am, holding Kleenex in my sweaty little fist waiting for the Motrin to work in order that I may continue to serve the short residents of this address in the manner to which they've become accustomed. But, thankfully my Internet surfing functions are not impaired by my small, pathetic situation. You may resume your normal activities, now. More About: Daily , Back
It really is all about you
2007-12-07 14:48:00 I have a friend who has had a lot of problems with her oldest child, a young adult. It seems that her oldest might have inherited some not-so-good traits from the father, my friend's former husband. It's tough, but, my friend has a really good outlook about the whole thing. She once remarked that if she wrote an autobiography it would be titled, "I Gave Birth to My Ex-Husband". My autobiography wouldn't have such an interesting title (not to make light of her problems, she started it). I'm thinking it might be, "I Served Waffles and Went to Work". What would your autobiography be called? More About: Life
'Cause you make me feel, phone-y phone-y
More articles from this author:2007-12-06 15:09:00 Because I like to analyze something until it's very death, unless, however, I make a big purchase on a whim (no middle ground for this girl), I am still trying to figure out what kind of cell phone I want. I think I've decided on something, and, then I read the CNET reviews, and, it gets panned. Then, I realize that no one on CNET likes much of anything, but, they've still planted a seed of doubt in the gelatinous mass that is my brain. Whatever I get will be an upgrade to my current phone, so I am more or less stuck with it for 2 years, and, the prospect of that kind of commitment makes me nervous. Then, there is the whole issue of whether I should get a Blackberry type of device. I have no business need for this type of thing, I just think they are nifty and shiny. I know the actual device can be had for not much money, but, it's the service plan "creep" I'm worried about.
