Madonna in Mumbai
2008-01-03 04:35:00
Yes, Madonna is gonna be stopping here in Mumbai too but that comes latter this week. She's here in India on a private visit accompanied by husband Guy Ritchie, her son and a couple of friends. ?She is here on a holiday, it is a personal visit to India and is not work-related at all. She does not want people to know about her visit here," revealed a source. Madonna's always been a big celebrity who's never been shy to be controversial and in the lime light, Madonna this time wants it very quiet, hmm... Not her style at all though, marriage with Guy Ritchie has settled her I suppose. The next day - 1st Jan was village safari day for Madonna, where she rode horsebacks and interacted with villagers, had a traditional Rajasthani meal and then spent the night at Jodhpur?s famous Umaid Bhawan Palace. She was also scheduled to have lunch with the former ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Gaj Singhji II!! (lucky Soul!!) (Image on right links to the TOI article)As I said, the 49-year-old 'like a ...

Good Riddance 2007
2007-12-31 15:43:00
Why "good riddance"? just read on.It's 31st December eve at the moment here in India and approximately 5 hours from now, 2008 will kick in officially. As everyone who is not living in a igloo some where in the Arctic has been led to believe, this is a night to party i.e, to have plenty of booze, music and dance. That is the general idea. But this year's the first in many many years for me that I was more than happy to decline any invitations to parties the reason being that I just don't feel like the routine. Well that is in part because of a mild temperature I have also. The whole mainstream partying thing also does bore me very very much. One thing I was wondering this morning is what's the big deal about new year's day/eve, it is after all just another day, only we, the humans mark it special. In a contemplative mood for the whole day and surfing for opinions, philosophy, thoughts, meditations on topics on the net, I found a very very great editorial on the New York times we...

Bhutto's son Bilawal, only 19 to lead PPP
2007-12-31 08:13:00
Just another example of how sentiments and emotions direct politics in Pakistan. On Sunday, in a closed-door meeting of the PPP central executive committee held in Bhtto's ancestral home itself at Naudero, they decided that Bilawal would be the next to lead the party. Though the real power will be with Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's husband who is named as co-chairman. Meanwhile, I am surprised that the party has decided to contest in the upcomming elections. The party's candidate for PM will be Makhdoom Amin Fahim. Naming Bilawal Bhutto Ali Zardari [only 19 and studying history in Oxford] not just ensures that the party will be able to cash in on the people's sympathy because of Benazir Bhutto's death but also ensures that the leadership is following the Bhutto bloodline for the third generation, kind of like the Gandhi bloodline of India . Bilawal quoted his mother in the press meet after the decission "Democracy is the best revenge" to Musharraf and drew a cheer; so, the kid cert...

Pakistan in a deep deep hole and still going deeper
2007-12-29 19:08:00
Our Neighbour - Pakistan has managed to get the whole world to Focus on itself recently but the price for it has been a very very big one. For the country to be the center of attention of the world media, Pakistan has had to dig itself into a very very big hole and the latest event - the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto (2 time Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan) has triggered around 2 days of all-out rioting and loss in property worth Millions. Pakistan is a key ally of Bush Administration's 'war on terror', but criticism from all sides had put a lot and lot of pressure on the Bush Administration & their 'friend' in Pakistan - Parvez Musharraf. It all started with the big scandal surrounding Justice Iftikaar Chowdhary and his sacking in March 2007 when he [Chowdary wouldn't toe the line], a man popularly seen as someone who can stand up to Musharraf's wrong ways. The general came out in the whole episode which ended with the declaration of Emergency rule as a 'evil dictator'...

Getting lost is not so easy now
2007-12-29 07:01:00
Yes, this is thanks to Yahoo! India maps. I discovered the Yahoo! India maps service in October and wrote about it here. Back then it was in beta and it still is in the beta stage but it's improved a hell of a lot. This is what Yahoo! has to say about the serviceStarting today (29/11/07), yahoo India maps will cut through the web so that the best of location intelligence is available to you behind one text box at http://in.maps.yahoo.com/. Try "mumbai cst" or "metro, delhi" or "garuda mall, Bangalore" and you will know what we are talking about. Looking for ATMs near Forum mall? Try "atms near forum mall, Bangalore". And it does not stop with just that. Combine the mighty power of users with our unique Indian Driving directions and suddenly, it seems like you may never be required to pull over and ask the pan-wallah for directions ever again. Yahoo! says they have also painstakingly added localities, towns, villages and cities along your route so that you know what you are leaving ...

The short story:- I got to see it only today in Cinemax Sion and if you want to know from yet another soul, how it is? I'll say Wow!!!! what a great movie, how many TAAREY'S? 5 out of 5 yeah , '*****' if not for the brilliant execution then just for making such a project!!Though the whole 'Dyslexia' thing was hyped a bit, (in that he sees toonish hallucinations etc) but the movie was par excellence in all other depts with brilliant acting from Aamir Khan [obs]. The boy has acted well also but over does it in the first few sequences of the movie then he gets it right I think. I was a bit disappointed that though they did choose to include some names with Dyslexia who have made a mark on the world, they didn't go into too much detail about Dyslexia and related disorders! It [Dyslexia] is a form of ADDHD/ADD [Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder] and they didn't even mention it. The reason it's important is because while the films 'subject': Ishaa...

There's still hope for us: Narrendra Modi wins in Gujrat
2007-12-23 16:02:00
(Modi 's supperman photo courtsey gujraticenter.com, The results for all the 182 assembly constituencies in Gujrat - one of the most important battlefronts in India n Politics have been declared and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has cliched the state election of 2007 with a comfortable majority --- Fantastic news for the people; people like me, people who are interested in progress and forward movement instead of getting their fears exploited. The gujrati community [irrespective of religion] has shown sense that has been lacking in the rest of the country in the last few years. Congress did play all it's time tested communal cards, the media did it's bit in carrying on with it's bashing of Narrendra-Modi and so called 'Hindutva' politics but thank heavens it has not worked in Gujrat. Have to hand it to the people of Gujrat for thinking on their own feet and not getting swept away in a foolish and worthless tide. They chose progress over choosing to mingle over old communal issues....

A quick word about the new design
2007-12-22 23:26:00
I finally got down to redesigning the Mumbaiya.net template today and after a couple of hours of work, I am pretty pleased with myself, will try to add the Blog title and info in the square beside the header image tomorrow, very sleepy now :) I hated the meaningless design and fonts I had picked up in a hurry myself, glad I saw the back of it :#?Anyway, now that the design is cool, I feel like hanging out here more and will post much more often, cheers!!!!!!

Sorry for the sacrficial lambs ....
2007-12-22 10:48:00
Just yesterday (22nd December) was Bakri eid and thanks to that I got an extra day off from work so I am thankful. But since this is the 'politically incorrect' blog where I am supposed to call a spade a spade, I'd like to take this moment and space in the universe of on-line ether to pray and express sorrow and compassion for the millions of goats/sheeps who lost their lives yesterday; sacrificed in the name of religion and festivities. Oh I am soooo sory for the sacrficial lambs and remember their throats not chopped off but painfully slit away with kinives which are blunted from all the throat-slitting since morning. In their religion they call it halaal, for me it's just draconian, inhuman foolishness. Not just on part of the people who do this but on part of all the rest of us as well who allow this madness to continue. Actually to be honest this 'Eid ul zhua was the first one I celebrated with a couple of muslim friends in my life and after witnessing all the slaughter, ...

I really watch that "I shouldn't be Alive " show and try not to miss it. I also almost died in our 'Life-Line' Mumbai locals but lived, read on to know howFirst off, It's really sad that traveling in Local trains is risking lives day in and day out, but the prize is not money, fame and glory, the prize is simply survival, reaching collges, schools and offices. It is not uncomon to have to go through the journey's with only the toe of one of your feet on the landing of the compqrtment door and you hold on to the pole a the compartment door. The good thing is that your muscles get plenty of workout, so if the gym's burning holes in your pocket, hit the Rails. I have had a few scary episodes as well and one of them was when I almost died. Let's just face it: life's tough in Mumbai
2007-11-18 15:35:00
Advance Warning :- Longish Post :)Yes, let's be honest living in Bombay isn't fun-time really. It may have been the wonderful 'City of Dreams' at one time but it's morphed in to something else entirely now. While the writers/poets of the ester years may have found Bombay a dream city, (Of course the Bombay they meant was the southern town zones which were well planned and developed during the 'Raj') where well-educated middle and upper classes mingled, indulged in frivolous activities a trifle more with much more anonymity than in say a small town. I concede that the opportunity to revel in the desires of the flesh and with anonymity if desired is still there; There are pubs, lounges and discos now where you go to have a few drinks and enjoy with friends. If that is not your thing, there are countless 'Bar & Restaurants' and other eateries where you go to have drinks and food with family and friends, there are coffee shops, bakeries, the new bookstores, music stores lik...

No night is a dull night night in Mumbai , something or the other is always happening when it's dark in here, things are not always pretty but they sure are unique to Mumbai. Thanx Prashant (iyerprashant at yahoo dot com) for sending me these videos about the nightlife in Mumbai (this is not about the glitz and the razmataaz here). Thanx to areenattari for making them as well. I found it a channel worth subscribing to in youtube... Sensex thrills of the week
2007-10-22 20:58:00
The boys at Dalal Street are having a Roller-Coaster ride for sure. Last week, we saw a fall from 19174 to 17307 and a rise through to make a new high at 19198. But finally the Sensex surrendered all gains to close the week at 17559.98. I asked a friend of mine who knows a lot about trading the reason for the Volatility? "Profit booking stupid" he said and I kind of felt guilty at that because I had booked profits on some of my stocks as well when the Sensex was at it's peak. But what the hell, don't you buy shares so that when the price of those shares rise, you sell them and book a profit? "Yes, but the markets eventually will reach levels close to 22,000 soon and you jumped the gun I am afraid" is what my friend said. I don't believe him, reason? gut feeling. But my limited experience with investing has already thought me that gut feelings don't count. So, I am planning to buy some more shares if the levels plummet even slightly again. It's currently at 17,613, if it comes do...

Chiranjeevi & family accept the black sheep in the family
2007-10-22 14:59:00
Chiranjeevi's daughter, Srija/Sreeja (I don't know the correct spelling sorry) shocked the world and her family last week by marrying her college sweetheart Shirish. Then news trickled in that she had sought police protection from the Delhi High Court because of murder threats to her and her groom from the Chiranjeevi family, she had said that the family wanted to get her killed because she had spoiled the family name and brought shame to the family. The icing on the cake was that the marriage took place in the media glare. Chiranjeevi was allegedly opposed to the marriage because of the economic status of the boy. But after so much media attention to the marriage, he had to buckle he said this while appearing visibly very distressed:?I was shocked when I came to know about the marriage. The important thing is that my family and well wishers have stood by me during this traumatic period. But now I want to bless my daughter and tell her that sweety, wherever you are, I wish you h...

Back to Jail for Sanjay Dutt
2007-10-22 14:10:00
Well, the first day of this week brings some sad news for Sanjay Dutt fans: A copy of the judgment of the 1993 Mumbai blasts have been submitted to Sanju and he has now been remanded to Judicial custody by the special Tada court. (For those who do not remember, Dutt was out on bail only until a copy of the judgment was handed over to him) this was due on Saturday itself but the judgment copy wasn't ready then and he was able to enjoy 2 more days of freedom. A copy of the judgment has been given to his friend Yusuf Nullwala as well and he surrendered with Sanju Baba as well. The terrible news for Sanjay Dutt, his family and all his fans including me is that Baba will have to go back to Yerwada jail in Pune again now.By the way, the judgment runs in to 4,340 pages. I don't think people like me and you can understand much of it, not sure even if Baba can even after all the years dealing with the law of this country but hey I can think of plenty of other uses of the judgment copy.So t...

Ponting's & Symonds's plea to the Australian Public regarding racial abuse
2007-10-22 10:55:00
(If you still don't know what happened with Symond, watch the youtube Video at the end of the post)After returning to Australia, both the Ausie captain Ricky Ponting and Right Hand Batsmen Andrew Symonds who is the only black player in the Australian team issued a warning to the Aussie fans not to mis-treat the India n players when they toured Australia later this year.?Am I against crowd participation? Definitely not, but there is a message I would like to give the Australian public and supporters of our team.? ?I don?t want to see ugly chanting at the Indian players when they come to Australia later in the year,? Symonds wrote in his column yesterday that is Sunday for the Daily Telegraph. While Ponting said this: "I'd like to see the Australian fans and public treat the Indian team the same way they would any other team," "I don't think they should be treated any differently because of what's happened over there," he said which means that the fans should go ahead and abu...

Our boys like it quick and easy
2007-10-22 10:27:00
Though Team India lost the One Day series to Australia in a very very miserable fashion, they did beat them again in the T20 match played yesterday. The match ended with Dhoni swinging Brett Lee over the fine-leg ropes for the maximum. It was a 7 wicket victory which means that Indians truly outclassed the Aussies. The team then lapped the ground on the car won by Player of the Match Gambhir. If there's one thing this team knows well, it's celebrating in style. One thing which was sad to see was the crowd's reaction to Andrew Symonds. Andrew Symonds was booed when he walked in to bat, when he departed, when he came in to bowl, whenever he threw the ball. Australians think that this is because of his race because they in their minds discriminate this way but Indian crowds seemed irritated by his arrogance and attitude. (frustration and irritation was written all over Symond's face and the crowd's were enjoying this) Anyway, Australia may have proved who rules in the the ODI form...

It hurts: Shahid Kapur
2007-10-22 09:57:00
Weeks of speculation over Saif Ali Khans and Kareena Kapur's relation finally ended this week when at the Lakme fashion week, Saif Ali Khan admitted that "For the time being all I am comfortable with saying is that we are together. I think the media is giving too much attention to this. Kareena and I are here and are happy with each other." It was Saif who did all the talking and Kareena just blushed and smiled in the background. Booth looked like teenagers in love, sweet! Not surprisingly, a lot has been written about Saif & Kareena with pictures of them cuddling, laughing and having fun together.Disturbed by the onslaught of pictures in the media of Kareena and the new man in her life, actor Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapur finally admitted, ?It will be dishonest to say that this doesn?t affect me. I am human, it hurts to see and read this all the time. I guess I have no choice but to live and deal with it.? Well, love is painful and Shahid's just finding that out. I hope he find...

Raikonen crowned world champion

Update :- Alonso has publicly backed Raikkonen for becoming the champion saying that Kimi is 'worthy' of succeeding him (Alonso) as a world champion. If in the rare event, the championship went to Hamilton, it would be an embarrassment to him. Meanwhile, it's not just Finnish fans who are celebrating, a Ferrari Constructors championship means that it's the Italians and Schumacher as well who are having a party. The tiffosi (Ferrari Fans known to be wild) in Germany are happy as well. (Michael Schumacher is directly responsible for this) John Todd has also rubbed salt in to McLarren wounds saying that it is the teamwork and the great atmosphere at Ferrari which have enabled them to win and they didn't cheat either LOL!!!! All in all a lot of drama which only F1 offers and we can look forward to some great rivalries for the next season... yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Like so many others, the drama of the Brazilian Grand-Prix yesterday on Sunday had me on the edge of my seat for ...

First off, I am again sorry for not posting in a really long long time. (Hang in there dear Feed Subscribers pls!!) There always seems to be so many things I have an opinion on and can blog about but I never often find the energy and time to:Get to the pc, Turn it on, Connect to the net, Open firefox, (I hate IE), Go to blogger.com, Sign in and then write about it ;) (I was born lazy for some reason).Often, it's just like going through the motions, I quote from here and there, give some link love and that is it! This obviously is not satisfactory at all. I am sure a lot of people who happen upon this blog just think it's a scam adsense blog and that is the last thing I had in mind when I started this bloggie. Another thing I have realized is that instead of this being a Mumbai Buzz blog, it should be an India Buzz blog. That gives us a chance to discuss a broader range of topics and events. All the thinking I have done recently has convinced me that it (blog) will benefit much m...

Bhool Bhulaiyaa may face legal hassles
2007-10-04 22:41:00
I love the title song from the upcoming film Bhool Bhulaiyaa, cos it's got such a cool, catchy, hippie sound to it and it seems everybody likes it. But it has now run into a bit of controversy, because some religious nut-head has issues with it!Some NGO filed a petition against the Censor Board of Film Certification chairperson and four others in a Mumbai court seeking removal of the song. The NGO feels that the video for the song is derogatory to Gautama Buddha. The hearing of petition has been posted to October 6, reported UNI. One does not need to be Einstein to understand that it won't make a difference ;)Eight semi-nude girls are shown dancing to the tunes of the title song with Hare Rama Hare Krishna inscribed on their sparse clothing, says the petition. This is what irritated the group.I hardly agree with the people who filed the petition. I mean, thanks to the actions of people like Rajneesh Osho and many before and after him, eastern religions like Buddhism & Hinduism...

Yahoo India Maps beta is Awesome!!!
2007-10-03 15:36:00
I don't know when they launched the service because it did not create a lot of buzz on the internet. I just found out via an ad-space on the Yahoo home page. But what matters is that it's very cool, it lacks the ability to add user marked businesses just yet and the directions feature isn't available for any location at all. But these features are barely available for Mumbai in Google Maps. They say that they will add these bells & whistles. But you can only be flattered about the accuracy it shows at least for Mumbai. You can find businesses like ATMs, Banks, Restaurants, Hospitals, Hotels, on shopping, movie halls etc with ease. But finding bars wasn't possible because they don't have many listed. I couldn't find any of the hundreds of bars I know in my vicinity!! But Yahoo! promises that it will accurately tell you even about information on cobblers, wada-pav & tea stalls in the future ;) Here is the link :- Yahoo India Maps

Boon For Mumbai Local Train Commuters but Doom for the Motormen
2007-10-03 03:57:00
According to a story in today's Mumbai Mirror daily, Central Railway, has announced 33 new services on the harbor line 8 of which will between the districts of Thane and Vashi while 25 will on the existing route between CST (formerly Victoria Terminus) & Panvel. This is fantastic news for commuters who travel on this line, they can now look forward to compartments which have lesser people and some air to breathe. The convenience of being able to go to & from Thane to Vashi is also greatly appreciated. Previously one had to go all the way to Kurla which can easily compete with a stadium hosting a Cricket World-Cup final in terms of number of the people and the chaos they crate. This can be said of Kurla Railway station at most times during the day. From Kurla, you get trains for Thane & Vashi both so you can continue your journey to either of these destinations after a change of trains. Thankfully, this problem's solved hurray ;)But 'Once Man's fun is Another's Hell...

Outsourcing makes everyone involved happy
2007-10-02 22:05:00
Now, government agencies are also discovering the benefits of Outsourcing , in 2004, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation signed comprehensive agreements with 17 contractors for the 17 geographical regions of Navi Mumbai (A kind of a suburb of Mumbai) for operating and maintaining the water supply. Which meant that there was a single contractor for each region. Evaluation after three years later shows that costs have come down and, what?s more, consumer complaints have reduced drastically. So, all three parties viz the Government employees from the Navi Mumbai Corporation, the citizenry which is getting better water supply and the contractors which are making a decent profit doing this are all happy!NMMC executive engineer in the water supply department Sanjay Desai explained the benefits :-First, electricity consumption reduced by 7.78 per cent which meant costs came down by Rs 10 lakh (1 Million) per month. Secondly, consumer complaints regarding water pressure have actually reduc...

Disecting Gandhi & Gandhigiri
2007-10-01 19:57:00
First of all, I am happy that 2nd October-the birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, is going to be International Non-Violence day. Gandhiji who is also the father of the nation of India , was a remarkeble but often lawyer, philopher, visionory, liberal, politician, leader, freedom fighter, sage all in one from the pious land of India in case you live under a rock and don't know about him. It is naturally a public holiday through out India, and sadly, to most Indians, this is all Gandhi Jayanti means, a public holiday. There are many who even criticize his philosophy supplying adjectives like fanciful, idealistic, naive, and immature and yet these people in a de-facto or auto-pilot kind of way or for lack of a better word, cowardice also are living his philosophy, these are the people who put up with a lot of crap that they are meted out by fellow men & women but can not oppose the opression because they don't have the guts to fight, they wish they were braver and this makes them...
