Main Gasing - Malaysian Top Spinning
2007-05-21 22:20:00
My previous post regarding the amazing distances and number of times that experts can skim stones prompted an e-mail from Johnny Ong in Kuala Lumpa. He highlighted the Malay sian game of Gasing - an incredibly skilled throwing game that makes skimming a stone a distance of 63m seem almost trivial. Kids have played with spinning tops for hundreds of years - they are probably the oldest recorded toy - but on the East coast of Malaysia they have made spinning tops into an art form. The spinning tops (Gasing in Malay) are superbly hand crafted hardwood and lead creations. Each, individually named Gasing measures up to 10 inches in diameter and weighs 6-8lb. The throwers (tukang gasing) wind a 16 foot rope to the top, loop one end around their wrist and throw it at a 3 foot square clay platform where it is scooped up by the catch man onto a wooden paddle. This is lubricated with coconut oil to aid in the length of its spin. Teams, consisting of up to 40 people (throwers, makers, catchers),...

Stone Skipping/ Stone Skimming
2007-05-14 17:37:00
This elegant game played at least once by anybody who has been on a pebbly beach is known by many names. To the British it is "Skimming", to Americans "Skipping" whereas the Irish prefer "Skiffing" and the Danish "Smutting". The French, as stylish and contrary as ever, know it as "Ricochet".Confusingly there are two World Championships. The World Stone Skimming Championships take place in September on Easdale Island, Argyll. The main rule is that the stone (Easdale slate only is used) must be no more than three inches in diameter and must bounce off the water at least three times. The longest skim wins. The current world record is 63m.In the US the World Stone Skipping Championships are organized by NASSA (bringing stone skipping into the space age) and here the distance traveled over the water is irrelevant, rather it is the number of skips made by the stone that counts. The current world record stands at a staggering 40!As the NASSA website says, ?NASSA promotes stone skipping as b...

Indoor Bull Fighting / Bull Tig
2007-05-12 11:47:00
Bull Tig is an old variation of the normal playground tig but one that is rarely seen played today. In it the chaser becomes a bull by simply bending a little at the waist, making his index fingers into horns and placing his hands on the top of his head. As the bull he can now chase the other players, trying to jab them with one of his horns and hence give that person the chance at being the bull. A much improved version can be played indoors, in a smallish space such as a kitchen. In fact, a kitchen environment is ideal because not only do tea towels make excellent improvised matador capes but the work surfaces can form safe zones where the bull can not strike. So players taunt the bull with tea towels or maybe slap the bull's behind before running and jumping onto a work-surface to escape his angry horns. Further embellishment can come by simulating the role of the Tercio de Banderillas in Spanish bull fighting. Here players attempt to attach clothing pegs or clips (obviously Bul...

The Top 5 Things To Do With Rhubarb

This post is part of ProBloggers Top5 Group writing ProjectThe Top 5 Thing s To Do With Rhubarb:5. Rhubarb Crumble4. Rhubarb Fool3. Rhubarb Cobbler2. Rhubarb Wine1. Rhubarb ThrashingA pub game languishing in mystery and obscurity for too long. To play Rhubarb Thrashing requires only some dustbins, blindfolds and a generous selection of freshly picked rhubarb sticks. For 2 players. Two empty dustbins are placed, without lids, facing each other. Players climb into a dustbin and put on their blindfolds. They then proceed to hit each other around the head with their sticks of rhubarb. The winner is decided by 1 fall or a submission. There has been much debate about whether the rhubarb leaves should be left on (rhubarb leaves are poisonous after all and so this could make the game dangerous) and also about whether players should take it in turns to strike or just wildly thrash at each other. Either way, a brilliant pub game; a treat for competitors and spectators alike.weird web: BBC News I...

Human Space Invaders
2007-05-05 14:25:00
A Playground game from 1980?s Britain, Human Space Invade rs is that rare thing - a successful computer into real-life game conversion. Line up a group of boys against a wall, three or four rows deep. These players must shuffle from side to side (hopefully en masse) progressing forward one step only when they have shuffled a required sideways distance. The game player stands facing them from a distance of 15m or so with a collection of footballs. These he fires one at a time at the advancing hordes of invaders. Any player hit is killed and the game continues until all aliens are killed or until one or more reaches the firer.Invading players can make the game more realistic by moving their arms from down by their sides to up above heads as they shuffle around.strange games no:117Chin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006

Extreme Rock Paper Scissors
2007-05-02 23:31:00
Definition: An extreme sport (also called action sport, adventure sport, and adventurous sport) is any sport featuring speed, height, danger, a high level of physical exertion, highly specialized gear, or spectacular stunts.Extreme Rock Paper Scissors however is just a violent variation on the standard game, an excuse for a physical attack on your opponent. As in the normal version each player picks the hand position representing the rock, paper or scissors except that if paper wins it is translated as a slap, rock becomes a punch and scissors becomes a poke. This changes the dynamics of the game somewhat in that players will favour one type of assault over another and hence try and win with that throw.strange games no: 116Chin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006

Finger Jousting / Finger Fencing
2007-04-25 23:13:00
After my last post on Rock Paper Scissors I received a missive from one Julian Gluck (aka. The Lord of the Joust) drawing my attention to this fantastic game. Finger Jousting (or Finger Fencing ) is a possibly ancient game combining jousting and sword fighting yet requiring neither horse nor blade. In its simplest form two players stand facing each other and clasp their right hands together as if about to arm wrestle. Then on a given command each player extends his index finger (his "lance") and battle commences. The objective is to jab your opponent before he jabs you. At no point may the players' hands lose contact with each other. This is often a lot less straightforward than you might initially think with feints, sideways moves and full body twists all yielding results. Either first to score wins or apportion different points to different body areas. The wonderful Fingerjoust.com website describes the rules in much more detail and present a superb glossary of finger fighting terms...

Rock Paper Scissors 101
2007-04-15 16:54:00
The well-known game of Rock Paper Scissors is not really strange - although it does have a fantastic World Championship. However, if you consider yourself above it then you need to learn to play Rock Paper Scissors 101...the degree level version. The game is played exactly like the game you know except there are 101 possible hand positions. These range from Alien to UFO, Medusa to Satan. The hand positions (fully illustrated on the website) range from the obvious to the highly skilled - "Vampire" is a particularly brilliant shape and the hand position for "Vulture" looks suspiciously like a very rude Lebanese hand gesture. To make the game fair/random each of the selected shapes beats 50 others and is in its turn beaten by 50. For example if you choose to go with "Gun" this will "shoot Princess", "break law" and "blast apart Turnip". If you choose "Baby" this will "spill Beer", "ruin Guitar" and "be unaware of Satan" but is obviously "carried off by Robot"Simple maths reveals there to...
Lionhunt / Wildebeest
2007-04-13 23:03:00
If you want a blindfolded game for your party and find Blindman's Buff too obvious then the variant Lionhunt is a perfect recommendation. I am indebted to Ryan de Vooght-Johnson (Strange Games' South African Correspondent) for his description of this marvellous game.Decide on the number of 'Lions' that will work best for the size of room you are playing in. Blindfold this player/players. All other participants will be the Wilde beest. To be so they must form a pack by making sure each is in contact with at least one other 'Wildebeest'. This can be achieved by holding hands or by grabbing a neighbours shirt, etc. Upon a command the blindfolded lions are released - it is their role to 'bring down' a wildebeest by touching it. Anyone caught is out and the game continues until one player remains. Any straggling player that loses contact with the pack is also out of the game.Thank you Ryan de Vooght-Johnsonstrange games no:113web: hunt/kill exotic animals in Texas -from Afghan Uri...

Sheep Tackling
2007-04-08 22:02:00
Any game that involves children, animals being dressed up and wrestling and incurs the wrath of animal rights groups has surely got to be worth playing. Shee p tackling is one such game.Simply get five sheep and dress them up in rugby shirts. Then get the players (in this case 500 children) to chase the sheep around a rugby pitch trying to wrestle them to the ground. The first group of players to successfully ground and immobilise a sheep are the winners. Sheep Tackling has been a popular half-time entertainment at rugby matches in parts of New Zealand but is now banned following criticism from The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.I am indebted to Wayne Skipadoo (Strange Games Antipodean Correspondent) for information on this excellent gamestrange games no:112web: BBC News item on Sheep TacklingChin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006
April Fools' Games #3 - Ancient Order of Jackdaws
2007-03-30 22:54:00
Its your April Fool's day party and you want to celebrate with a game that combines the risible antics of a Masonic meeting with the good old-fashioned brutality of a bloodied nose...the Ancient order of Jack daws is the game for you.You will need to place a rug on a slippery floor. The Grand Master of the Jackdaws sits on a chair in front of the rug, other members sit around the rug cross legged. The victim is led by two others and told to kneel on the rug facing the Grand Master. The ceremony begins.Grand Master: "You wish to become a member of the Ancient Order of Jackdaws?"Victim: "I do"Grand Master: "You will observe its rules and keep its secrets till your dying day...and always remember the oath you are about to take?"Victim: "I will"Grand Master: "You will bow to its decision."Upon which point two players grab hold of and briskly jerk the corners of rug backwards causing the victim to bow violently.strange games no:111Chin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006

April Fools' Games #2 - Aeroplanes
2007-03-26 22:38:00
A re-post of Strange Game s no:33 one of the all time great trick games.Aeroplanes is a trick party game that can probably only be played once (unless one keeps participants out of the room until it is their turn)Two strong men are required to hold a plank of wood a few inches above the floor. The partygoer /'pilot' / 'victim' is then blindfolded and helped onto the plank. He stands on it and supports himself by placing his hands on the shoulders of the two carriers. The carriers then proceed to make aeroplane noises and whilst wobbling the plank slightly they crouch down as low to the floor as possible. To the victim, whose hands remain on their shoulders, it appears that they are lifting him higher above the floor. The carriers then stop their aeroplane noises and announce that the engine has failed and the 'pilot' must jump. What feels to the blindfolded 'pilot' to be three or four feet is merely a matter of inches.I remember playing this with "Topper" Smythe-Wilkenson at a ...

April Fools' Games #1 - I See a Ghost
2007-03-25 23:29:00
As April Fools' Day rapidly approaches I have received a missive from Ryan Luc De Vooght-Johnson (Strange Game s South African Correspondent). In it he details a game he used to play in the 1950's which makes a perfect party game for April Fools..."I See a Ghost ."The leader lines up everyone to one side of himself, standing closely shoulder-to-shoulder. He looks ahead and proclaims in his best John Gielgud voice, "I see a ghost!""Where?" says the person next to him. "There" says the leader and raises his right arm to point. The second player then repeats the dialogue and the process moves down the line. Then the leader repeats the phrase, "I see a ghost!" and this time raises his left arm as well. At the end of this round everyone has two arms raised straight in front. On the third round the process is the same except now the leader lowers himself onto one knee with both arms outstretched. As the final player adopts this position the leader screams out as if in terror and pushes har...

Body Surfing & Crap Surfing
2007-03-18 10:30:00
Ask one of today's teenagers if they have ever body surfed and no doubt they will regale you with a tale of being held aloft in front of the stage at a Maniac Sumo gig. In my day the body surfing game was more genteel though no less fun.Line up all but one of the party goers then get them to lie down on the floor on their backs. Make sure they are lined up but have about a body's width between each. The remaining player then kneels at the start of the line...then launches himself (arms outstretched) on to the first few bodies. These players must now turn as one in the right direction to propel the surfer on to the next players and so on down the line. When the surfer reaches the end then he himself must lie down and become part of the 'wave' and the person who was the first in line now has his go. Crap Surfing : if you've ever enjoyed some activity or other but struggled valiantly to become competent in it then your heart will be warmed by Crap Surfing. Crap Surfing although a w...

Fruit & Vegetable Croquet
2007-03-16 23:59:00
It's not often that you find a game that is so awe-inspiringly brilliant that it makes you wonder why you ever played anything else. Fruit and Vegetable Croque t is one such game - and I found it listed and described in Deep Fun an excellent and informative website from master funsmith Bernie DeKoven Each player obtains an old pair of ladies tights and places a heavy-ish vegetable or fruit down one of the legs. The tights are then tied about the waist of the player so that the dangling fruit hangs near ground level between his legs. An orange is substituted for the croquet ball. The aim of the game is for each player to swing the laden tights between his legs so that the fruit inside strikes the 'orange' ball and sends it in the direction required. All the normal rules of croquet apply - or you could change it into just a first past the line speed race. The sight of grown men swinging their hips in a Shakira-like-fashion in order to get a nylon enclosed dangling squash hit an oran...

Ringing the Bull / Wallhooky
2007-03-13 22:56:00
Simple to set up and play, but quite addictive - Ring ing the Bull (or Wallhookey as it is sometimes known) is an ancient pub game reputedly brought back to the England by the Crusaders. It retains its popularity in the North of England and the Caribbean. Attach a bull's nose ring to a string from the ceiling and then attach a hook to the wall in such a position that the bull's ring will hook on with the string remaining taut. Traditionally the hook was attached to the nose of a stuffed animal's head mounted on the wall. Each player stands in the throwing place and has a set number of throws. The player with the highest number of rings hooked is the victor. Extra points can be scored for throws that perform a complete circle before getting hooked.strange games no:107weird web:wallhookey resource pagesChin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006

Tuna Tossing - another strange thing to throw
2007-03-10 16:24:00
My last post concerning the great Australian sport of Water Melon Skiing prompted an e-mail from Wayne Skipadoo (Strange Games Antipodean correspondent). In it he detailed the exciting sport of Tuna Tossing. The Tuna Tossing World Championship occurs annually at the Tunarama Festival in Port Lincoln, Australia. Contestants simple grab the tail of a frozen 10kg tuna and using whatever means they feel like throw it as far as possible. Most people manage only a few metres...the world record is an accomplished 37.23 metres. Other events include the 3kg Kingfish toss for children aged 11-15 and bizarrely a 'prawn toss' for little children. And to make sure it is environmentally friendly the tunas used are ones caught in nets that don't harm dolphins. Water Melon Skiing
2007-03-07 23:11:00
The Water melon is thought to have originated in the Kalahari Desert of Africa. The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt and is depicted in Egyptian hieroglyphics on walls of their ancient buildings. Watermelons were often placed in the burial tombs of kings to nourish them in the afterlife. It took the Australians to strap them to their feet and make a sport.Every two years, the town of Chinchilla pays tribute to the melon harvest with the Chinchilla Melon Festival where people not only eat the melons but use them for a number of other activities including headbutting them. The highlight of the festival however is Water Melon Skiing .Put down a long tarpaulin and make it slippy - the insides of a few dozen water melons make a grand lubricant. Players take it in turns to stand at the beginning of the run, each foot encased in a scooped out water melon. They then hold onto a rope being held by two people standing either side of the tarp - these two...
A triptych of strange 3 legged games
2007-03-04 23:29:00
There are few feelings in party gaming better than that heady, slightly sick, feeling one gets when tied to a partner you then have to rush around completing some crazy task or other. Below are three of the best three legged games ever. 3 Legged Frisbee GolfAlthough frisbee golf is considered a serious sport in some parts of the world 3 Legged Frisbee Golf is superior in almost every way. For teams of two players. Playing pairs have their legs tied together. Each team possess a frisbee. On a starting command all teams set off by throwing their frisbee, chasing after it as quickly as possible, picking it up and throwing it again. The first team to get their frisbee to the 'hole' ( a pre-determined object as far away as you like) wins. A great variety is Zombie 3 Legged Frisbee Golf - here after the starting throw a team can either carry on trying to finish quickly or aim their frisbee at a competing couple. If they score a hit then that couple falls over 'dead'. This adds a super...

Welsh Bunny Hopping
2007-03-03 21:51:00
As Easter approaches, every Strange Gamer finds themselves itching to buy masses of cotton wool and double-sided sticky tape, dress themselves up as a rabbit and hop down their local high street. For the past three years the Welsh town of Llangollen has hosted the Easter Bunny Hop. Competitors of all ages and sizes don their rabbit costumes and hop madly through the centre of the town. Unfortunately the organisers have cancelled this years event, and any future activities, claiming they can not afford the cost of the public liability insurance. Surely it's a sorry state of affairs when the common man and woman are denied the basic pleasures of being a bunny and making a fool of themselves. The accompanying photograph is of last year's event. Strange Games with Bubblewrap #2 - Grasshopper
2007-03-01 23:41:00
As an addition to Stra nge Game s with Bubblewrap #1 my good friend Maurice Tweddle tells me of a game he still plays based on the 1970's TV show Kung Fu. Simply get a long roll of bubble wrap and lay a path out on top of a solid floor. Players take it in turns to walk barefooted along the length of bubblewrap - just like Kwai Chang Caine did on rice paper in Kung Fu. Any player who is heard to pop a bubble is out until it's his turn again. To add to the game a candle can be placed at the end of the path for the kung fu master to place his hand in the flame and yet feel no pain. A non-player can commentate on proceedings using the words of the masterly Masters Po and Kahn:-What must we say of a mirror that receives tranquillity, yet reflects a troubled browDiscipline your body Grass hopper, that your mind may find a greater power.weird web:the kung fu guidestrange games no: 102 Chin chin!...Montegue Blister - 2006
Strange Games with Fire #2: Knee Balance Burn

You can't beat a party game with a lit candle for the wonderful feeling that you may be sued at any moment by a litigious parent. And all because little Tommy suffered minor burns. Strange Game s with fire number 1: Snapdragons reminds me of the wonderfully strange game: Knee Balance Burn. For two players at a time. Each faces the other, then both players go into a single knee balance. (Balancing on one knee is a great skill to learn that is bound to come in useful in later life) One player holds a lighted candle, the other holds an unlighted one. Their aim is to touch candles and get the unlighted candle burning before their raised knees touch the floor. If they fail then it is someone else's turn. Snapdragons - strange games with fire #1
2006-12-22 11:56:00
As Christmas Eve approaches the nation tries to decide which family game to play. Should it be a classic board game, a cosy parlour game or maybe even a DVD quiz game. No, please don't make those mistakes...there is only one game for Christmas Eve: Snapdragons. Very popular from the 16th to the 19th centuries, Snapdragons (or Flapdragons) has explicably declined in popularity.Gather everyone around the dining room table, place a large flat dish in the centre. In the dish scatter a good handful of raisins then pour on top a layer of brandy or cognac. Set fire to the brandy and dim the lights. Players take it in turns to pluck a raisin out of the burning liquid and eat it quickly down. For a more competitive edge to the game use larger dried fruit such as apricots, one of which has a lucky sixpence stuffed inside.Equipment needed: plate, matches, raisins, brandy, address of nearest accident and emergency departmentSnapdragons, famously, makes an appearance in Lewis Carroll's Through...

Blood Potato

Combine 'blindman's buff' with 'murder in the dark' and you get Blood Potato - a superb party game similar in form to Mouchard (Strange Games no.46). It's rare at parties but reasonably common at drama schools - presumably for all those budding Bela Lugosis. All players are blindfolded and one player is given the role of murderer (without anyone else knowing). Players then move around the room. If two meet then they must say the word 'potato' to each other, however if the murderer meets someone he must say the word 'blood' to them upon which they scream dramatically, die and remove themselves from the game by standing at the edge of the room. The game continues, with the body count increasing and fear rising until no 'potatoes' are left. The game is improved if eliminated players encourage and shout directions to the remaining ones.weird web 1: potato fan club (don't miss the spud version of pong)weird web 2: potato search engine - for all your Solanum searches strange ...
Strange Games with Bubblewrap #1 - Thieves Variation
2006-12-17 03:32:02
I wrote about the blindfolded party game Thieves in Strange Game s no.41 in which partygoers have to steal the blindman's treasure without being struck with his rolled up newspaper. This brilliant variation builds excitement levels even higher. Position the blindman on a swivel chair and place his treasure (a set of handbells for example) at his feet. Arm him with a water pistol. Then, cover the floor surrounding his chair with layers of bubblewrap. The idea, as before, is for players to approach the blindman and steal one of his bells but this time without getting squirted with water. The game works best if only one player at a time is allowed to make an attempt at theft. If the blindman scores a hit on a player, then that person must return to his position on the edge of the circle. If he is hit twice then he becomes the next blindman. The game finishes once all the treasure has been stolen.weird web: virtual bubblewrap popper - plus description of techniquesstrange games no 86......

Toilet Tag / Stuck in the Toilet
2006-12-13 15:29:01
Strange Games is indebted to Bertie Windcheater (an English reader) who informed me of this fantastic contemporary stuck-in-the-mud tag variation - one which I think should immediately be positioned at number 1 (or should that be number 2's) on the recentTop Tag Variations post.Simply, a tagger is designated and all other players must run away to avoid being tagged. If a player is tagged then they must adopt a toilet position by crouching down with knees fully bent and one arm held straight out to the side (the flush handle!). Free players can then release this player by approaching them and pressing down on the 'lever' and 'flushing the toilet', however if they are tagged then they become a toilet too. If any player has 'been to the toilet' three times then it is their turn to be the tagger.Thank you Bertie.weird web: toilet seat art museumstrange games no:85...category: party games
