Cant Marry Your Partner? Adopt Them Instead.
2007-01-25 23:25:01
Photo courtesy of Jazz Not Jazz From courts grappling with the issues of gay civil unions and marriage, and rights of gay couples to adopt children, comes a different type of case out of Maine. A gay woman formally adopted her partner in a lesbian partnership, with the intention of securing her dependent partner?s rights to inherit from her well-to-do family in the event of the partner?s death. As a result of the couple?s eventual separation, complex cases are now pending in two different states - New York and Maine - cases which turn upon technicalities, policy arguments and substantive legal grounds. Some of the Technicalities: The couple actually resided in New York, which explicitly barred adoption between sexual partners, reserving it for parent/child relationships. The adoption in question apparently took place during an extended getaway in Maine, which had no such explicit prohibition. Maine?s jurisdiction is called into question based both on failure to meet the residency re...

Nick and Jessica?s Divorce Publicity Stunt
2007-01-25 05:23:01
Photo courtesy of CTV As far as publicity stunts go, using your divorce to promote a new single is up there with the worst of them. And that?s what Jessica Simpson and ex-husband Nick Lachey are doing after ?accidentally? scheduling UK releases for the same day. Both have songs put out by the same record company, RCA, next Monday ? Jessica?s as a download for a week before it hits the shops. Both titles refer to the split. Nick?s is What?s Left Of Me and Jessica?s is A Public Affair. Her official press release even starts: ?The fabulous Jessica Simpson NICKs the spotlight on 29th January…? It?s hardly BLUR vs OASIS but fans of each party are apparently already battling it up on internet blog and MySpace sites. One fan posted this on her website devoted to all things Simpson: ?I have a plan to make Jessica beat Nick. ?I’m basically calling on all Jessica Simpson fans to get behind Jessica and support her in every way we can. It really is Team Jessica!” ?Between us, w...

Duped Dads Fight Back
2007-01-24 17:22:01
It was the lawyers of ancient Rome who came up with the modern definition of fatherhood: Mater semper certa est; pater est quem nuptiae demonstrant (rough translation: The mother is obvious; the father is the one she was married to when the child was born). The Romans, however, didn’t have access to genetic testing. Dylan Davis did. A few months after his divorce in 2000, Davis, 36, a software engineer in Denver, took a DNA test to confirm a nagging suspicion that he was not the biological father of his 6-year-old twins. The negative test results led him to give up partial custody of the boy and girl–”The anger grows and grows, and it just keeps chipping away at your love for those children,” he says–and since his ex-wife moved to another state, he has had no contact with the twins. But under Colorado law, he is still required to pay $663 a month in child support. So Davis is lobbying to change the statute so that he and others like him won’t be h...

Mickey Mouse Gets a Divorce
2007-01-23 17:19:01
Mickey Mouse gets a divorce. Well, not exactly… But Disney does. ET has learned that after 51 years of marriage, Roy E. Disney filed for divorce on Friday from his wife Patricia, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Roy, who is reportedly worth $1.2 billion, is the nephew of Walt Disney and one of the Walt Disney Company’s major shareholders. Who knows, maybe it will inspire some new Disney sequels for our kids. Ones that they can really relate to… I can see it now: “Beauty and the Beast file for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.” “Cinderella kicks out Prince for having affair with Stepsister.” “Rapunzel accuses Prince of Habitual Cruel and Inhuman Treatment. Prince to Jury: “It was the only way I could get up the tower!!!”

Abandonment - A Divorce Issue
2007-01-22 23:17:01
In high conflict divorces, those that never seem to end, abandonment is a common factor. These days, when we see divorced spouses returning to court two or more years after the divorce process was technically completed, we inquire into their early childhood experiences, and we frequently find abandonment trauma in their family histories. The most obvious form of abandonment is when a parent deserts the family, but it can also be the result of a parent dying when a child is young. Sometimes the effect of a parent being ill and away at hospitals or just not able to invest adequate time and energy into parent/child interactions is perceived by the child as abandonment. It can even be one consequence of parental drug or alcohol abuse. A substance-impaired parent is not emotionally available, and to a child that can feel like abandonment. Not surprisingly, many adopted children have feelings of abandonment. I remember one case in which the children were diagnosed with abandonment anxiety....

2007-01-16 23:10:01
According to a recent U.S. study, all couples experience conflict - but how a couple communicates during a fight can determine if they will stay together. Dr Keith Sanford, a clinical psychologist and an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, studied dozens of couples as they communicated through a fight. Sanford and his research team focused on what determines whether a person will use positive or negative communication during an argument. He found that emotion and the types of thoughts a person uses are especially important. Sanford says negative emotion can actually be a good thing. Sanford distinguished between two types of negative emotion, hard and soft. Hard emotion is associated with asserting power, whereas soft emotion is associated with expressing vulnerability. Sanford and his team consistently found that hard emotion escalated fights, but they also found that soft emotion is generally beneficial for relationships. Soft emotion appeared...

2007-01-16 23:10:01
Gosh! All of this info is making my head spin ?.. but maybe, somewhere out there, someone has some advice for me ???. ? I am currently ?legally? married; separated now for 4 months from a man I met when I was 18 [he was 21]. Fast forward 18 years, 16 years of them married. We have a 15 yo daughter and a 12 yo son. We both work full time jobs. He was abusive both physically and mentally to my cats, never to me, but he knew how much I love my cats that that was his way of hurting me much deeper and longer-lasting than any type of abuse he could do to me [This is within the last 3-5 years or so]. He seemed to always keep me confused and told me I was crazy; that I was imagining things; making a big deal out of nothing; he chose to masturbate to pornos instead of spending time with me in bed; never celebrated my successes, or my new haircuts; always being disrespectful, distant and dispassionate towards me - oh, the list goes on and on ??. I was tired of his psychological abuse and emot...

2007-01-16 23:10:01
These days, it is hard to come by an individual who does not know someone who has been divorced, or who has not been divorced themselves. In Hollywood, divorce is seemingly becoming a common occurrence, while paving the way for a society where we’re not only getting married later in life, but also searching for an almost unrealistic level of happiness in our marriage. Many couples considering divorce refuse to believe that divorce can have a negative effect on their children. But many studies have been conducted that prove otherwise. A long term study released in 2002 by the Institute for American Values found that ?unhappily married adults who divorced were no more likely to report emotional or psychological improvements than those who stayed married. According to this study, divorce does in fact NOT improve your emotional health. I think it would be safe to assume that this is due to the stress and financial burden divorce inflicts upon couples. Here’s another fact you...

Moscow saw a four percent rise in the divorce rate last year
2007-01-16 23:10:01
Moscow saw a four percent rise in the divorce rate last year, with more than 45,000 couples deciding to untie the marriage knot, an official with the Russian capital’s registry office said Friday. “That is an amazing figure,” said Tatiana Ushakova. “We have not registered so many divorces in at least five years.” She said Moscow experienced a slight increase in marriages, while marriages with foreigners became less popular. “Men from 93 countries arrived in Moscow last year to marry local women,” Ushakova said. She added most foreign marriages involved citizens of Turkey, Germany, the US, Britain and former Yugoslavia. Ushakova said the birth rate in the Russian capital grew in 2006 despite the rise in divorces. It increased by 1,780 newborns as compared to 2005. Last year, President Vladimir Putin had highlighted the demographic crisis afflicting Russia in his May state of the nation address, proposing radical new measures to deal with the ...

Scary goth rocker Marilyn Manson and his wife, burlesque bab
2007-01-16 23:10:01
Scary goth rocker Marilyn Manson and his wife, burlesque babe  are set to divorce - and it’s already getting ugly! Dita moved out of their Los Angeles home just before Christmas and new information has revealed the real reasons behind the divorce! Apparently Marilyn was a heavy drug user and Dita, who was ready to start a family, was sick of his manic behaviour and all night partying. “Lindsay Lohan was always ringing up the house wanting to come round and party with him,” said a source. “He became paranoid as a result of the drugs he was taking. At one stage he thought the cleaner was trying to kill him.” Other rumours surrounding the split suggest there may have been a 3rd party involved in the break-up. The split comes only a year after they were married; however they dated for 5 years before that.

Courtesy of Daily Record When Elle nsburg residents Vania and Ken Swanson were having difficulty with their marriage and were on the brink of divorce, help came from an unlikely source - a television program. Vania filed divorce papers in March 2006 and six months later the couple were being filmed for the reality-TV show ?Supernanny.? She credits being on the program with saving her marriage. ?It prevented us from being a divorce statistic,? she said. The show follows Jo Frost, a.k.a. Supernanny, as she assists parents with everyday obstacles that come with raising children. She observes how parents interact with their young children and teaches them techniques for how to better raise them. Once she demonstrates her parenting style the parents spend several days with their children without Frost and attempt to implement her teachings. After a few days Frost revisits the family at the end of the program to track their progress and give them advice to help keep them stay on track...

Counselors Can Find Out What Kids Really Want
2007-01-04 23:06:01
Courtesy of Your Child-Your Divorce Divorced parents often have very different perspectives about what their children want or need. A short time ago two parents in my court were debating whether their 5-year-old son should fly unescorted between Phoenix and Albuquerque for visitation. The mother said, ?He hates to fly.? The father said, ?He loves to fly.? I said, ?Are you talking about the same little boy?? When I asked the mother what made her think her son hated flying she said, ?Because he told me so.? The father noted that?s how he too had got his information. The child had told his father that he loved flying. A child telling each of his parents different things is a common occurrence in divorce cases. Sometimes children do this to manipulate their parents, but more often the child?s goal isn?t manipulation or deceit; the child?s goal is to make each of the parents happy. Children are remarkably astute at figuring out what grownups want to hear, especially their parents. One wa...

Should I Divorce?
2007-01-03 23:05:02
Have you ever wondered “Should I stay married or should I divorce”?  You are not alone.  Troubles in a marriage easily prompt these kind of questions.  The article below will help you sort out your feelings.   Reality Check Before moving on with what you need to know about divorce, the next few paragraphs will ask you to look before you leap if you find yourself wanting out of your marriage.  Choosing to divorce might ultimately be your decision, but it should be one made in a state of calm with little doubt and few regrets.  When someone approaches me and says he or she wants a divorce, my first reaction is to say, “Are you sure?”  Decisions made in haste can take on lives of their own, and before you know it, there may be no turning back to save your marriage.  Deep down we all know when we are at peace with the decisions we’ve made- big and small.  Sometimes we listen to our gut and sometimes we don’t.  When we make decisions and take action w...

When they decided to divorce, they spent a single afternoon in the Beverly Hills Hotel, dividing it all up. With just two notebooks and a bottle of wine, the Blixseths - California real-estate tycoons and founders of the famed Yellowstone Club - finished the job in a matter of hours. No attorneys. No accountants. No judges. “Life’s too short”, they figured. “And why give the lawyers all the money if you can work it out yourselves?” Read the full story of their DIY divorce here.

Darn Celebrity Divorces of 2006 - The Complete Guide
2006-12-28 11:02:02
2006 has been a busy year for Hollywood divorce lawyers. In fact, it has been the busiest year ever in Hollywood history. Here is my summary of the biggest darn hollywood divorce scandals of 2006. Enjoy: Carmen Electra | Dave Navarro Photo courtesy of BBC Music It was fun while it lasted but Carmen Electra filed for divorce from Dave Navarro citing irreconcilable differences. It was said that Electra requested their assets be divided as specified in their prenuptial agreement and that the court not award spousal support to either party. This break up seemed surprising at first, sources said it had to do with Navarro’s hectic schedule, but everything became clear when Dave traded in the former playboy model with a similar used model, porn-star Jenna Jameson. Carmen and Dave have no children. Chris Evert | Andy Mill Photo courtesy of Tennis Roundup Tennis star Chris Evert divorced her second husband, ex-Olympic skier Andy Mill. Courtesy of LSJ Going through a divorce? Here’s some advice on children and divorce from the book “You Can Keep the Damn China! And 824 Other Great Tips on Dealing With Divorce ” (Hundreds of Heads Book s, $13.95), straight from people who’ve been through it themselves: ***** “During a divorce, children can make life seem worthwhile again. But you have to put on a happy face for them. It’s not their problem that their parents are no longer together. Make sure their lives remain positive and good and that you don’t create a poisonous atmosphere for them.” - F.R., Sydney, Australia, married 17 years, divorced 2 years “In Vermont there’s a rule that if you have kids and want to get divorced, you have to take a Divorcing Parenting Class at the courthouse. Man Forced to Divorce for Shouting ?Divorce?
2006-12-22 10:56:02
This is absolutely ridiculous. I cannot believe people actually live like this: Take a look at this story I just read on the net: In a fit of alcohol-fuelled anger, Bihar-residend Akhtar shouted “talaq” (divorce) three times at his wife during an argument, which was overheard by neighbours. The result? He was forcibly separated from his wife Sakina Khatoon and their children and the couple is being forced to divorce against their wishes. While Akhtar and his wife say they want to stay together and have no problems with each other, the local maulvis (Muslim clerics) have decreed them to be divorced. ?He said it in a drunker stupor. We want to stay together but the society won?t let us,? says Sakina.  ?There is no question of staying together. They will be divorced instantly,? says cleric Imanul Haque Khan. According to Islamic law, for the duo to stay man and wife, Sakina has to marry another man, stay with him for at least four months, divorce him and then marry Akhtar a...

Eminem and Kimberly Mathers are Divorced ? Again.
2006-12-20 22:54:01
Photo courtesy of Detroit Free Press According to the Detroit Free Press, the couple, who were married to each other twice, reached an out-of-court settlement during a hearing at Macomb County Circuit Court this past Tuesday. The two agreed to share custody of their daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, who turns 11 on Christmas Day, the newspaper reports. It is not clear if Kim was granted the financial support and attorney fees she’d been seeking from the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Math ers III. The couple “conducted themselves with dignity and respect,” Chief Judge Antonio P. Viviano told Free Press. Eminem refused to comment after the hearing. Eminem, 34, and Kim, 31, were married on Jan. 14 for the second time. Less than three months later, Eminem filed for divorce. Their first marriage lasted from 1999 to 2001. In addition to Hailie Jade, the couple adopted Kim’s niece Alaina, 12. Kim also has a daughter, Whitney from a previous relationship.

Children and Divorce Psychologist TELLS IT LIKE IT IS
2006-12-19 10:52:01
I ran across this article on the web and I just HAD to share it with you. Read Carefully:  A Psych o logist Who has Dealt with the Pain of Many Child ren Whose Parents Act Irrationally During Divorce Tells It Like It Is! Lynne Namka, Ed. D. © 2000 It is tough to be a child of divorced parents. It is absolutely terrifying to be the child of divorced parents who are at war with each other! Divorce hurts. It is a terrible thing to have happen to a family. Everyone gets hurt, but children remain scarred for years when parents continue the war. Research shows that negative behaviors from parents act after a divorce can cause more problems to a child than the divorce itself. There are three ways of acting that divorcing parents can make. These three ways of acting during and after a divorce are (1.) Argumentative, (2.) Disengagement, (3.) Cooperating. The type of arrangement that you engage in, is directly related to the level of your maturity. People who are getting divorced often try to co...
Divorce is Not a Game. Or is it?
2006-12-17 16:49:02
Remember the days when there were books for children on “difficult” topics such as divorce or puberty (you know the ones I’m talking about: “Where do Babies Come From”, “Why is Mommy’s New Friend Sleeping Over”) ? those books. They were pretty good, had some decent cartoons, and for the most part did what they were supposed to do - help parents avoid awkward conversations with their children. But divorce is not something you can just sweep under the carpet and hope will go away. According to a recent British survey, only 1 in 20 children of divorce believed that it was properly explained to them, while one-fourth of the children feel that no one had talked to them at all about the reasons for their parents? separation. Israeli company, Zipland Interactive, realized that a book just wasn?t gonna cut it anymore and has recently released “Earthquake in Zipland“: the world’s first research-based psychological computer gam...

10 Signs of a Cheating Spouse
2006-12-17 04:49:01
Courtesy of Dr. Reena Sommer Finding out that your spouse has cheated on you usually comes as a huge surprise and shock. In fact, most people are caught completely off guard when they discover that their spouse is having an extramarital affair. Even when people readily acknowledge that their marriage or relationship is unsatisfying and in trouble or when they are able to admit that they suspect infidelity, the reality of a cheating spouse is usually too much to bear. Because having to accept that one may be married to a cheating spouse is painful and unacceptable, most will choose to overlook some very obvious signs of a cheating spouse. Sadly, once the infidelity is discovered, people generally feel angry at their own ignorance in not recognizing the signs of a cheating spouse. If your relationship is not what it used to be and you are beginning to feel that you are no longer as important to your spouse as you once were, you may want to familiarize yourself with the following list ...

Jude Law and Sadie Frost: A Hollywood Happy Ending
2006-12-15 16:47:01
Photo courtesy of People Jude Law and ex-wife Sadie Frost are breathing a sigh of relief after finally reaching a so-called “happy ending” after the bitter fall-out from their divorce. Frost, who split from the actor in October 2003 after six years of marriage and three children and who have recently reached a divorce settlement following two years of bitter argument, says she and Law are now “good friends” and are both equally involved in the upbringing of Rudy, Iris and Rafferty. “I respect him, he respects me, she says. “I didn’t want this to be a bitter divorce. When I look back, it was complete insanity. But it has given me a strength and security to get through anything. You have to put aside ego and differences and anything said in the papers. “The children are the truth. They come first. It is a happy ending for us, it has just taken a while to get there.” Which is great for the kids. And even better for the wife. Last mo...

The Best Darn Divorce Letter EVER
2006-12-15 16:47:01
Ok, I dont know who was originally behind this, but it has been making its way around the net for quite some time now. You have to read this - it is HYSTERICAL: Dear Connie, I know the counselor said we shouldn?t contact each other during our ?cooling off? period, but I couldn?t wait anymore. The day you left, I swore I?d never talk to you again. But that was just the wounded little boy in me talking. Still, I never wanted to be the first one to make contact. In my fantasies, it was always you who would come crawling back to me. I guess my pride needed that. But now I see that my pride?s cost me a lot of things. I?m tired of pretending I don?t miss you. I don?t care about looking bad anymore. I don?t care who makes the first move as long as one of us does. Maybe it?s time we let our hearts speak as loudly as our hurt. And this is what my heart says: ?There?s no one like you, Connie.? I look for you in the eyes and breasts of every woman I see, but they?re not you. They?re not even c...

What Happens When You Put Divorce and Poetry Together

This touching piece is taken from Ojar.com’s Divorce Poems section. But the real credit goes to the author ‘mariher’ for his creative approach to a rather ‘crappy’ situation. Shit by mariher You?re a piece of shit And I always knew it You always smelled like shit Your mouth needed a diaper on it So here I go Lo and behold Walking down this shitty path Thinking of how smelly it was, your ass. If only I?d known what a shit you were Then maybe I?d have stayed away sooner Rather than let you be such a blur Not knowing that you were a shitty loser So here I go Walking down this shitty path Marked with the remnants of your shitty ass I need to go buy a vacuum now And clean all the shit you brought into my world And then this too shall pass.

Helping Your Kids Handle Divorce
2006-12-13 04:42:01
Every year over one million parents have to talk to their kids about divorce. For each parent, the discussions differ, but the goals of the discussions are universal: to openly and honestly reassure your child of your love. Divorce is painful and traumatic for all involved ? spouses and children alike. We all happily begin our lives together full of shared hopes and dreams and committed to a lasting and loving relationship. Yet almost 50 % of today?s marriages end in divorce. How parents handle divorce, however, makes the difference in their children?s healthy adjustment or potential maladjustment. Here?s an example of how to begin talking to your child about your divorce. Let?s meet Brad: Brad is 9 years old and an only child. He?s the apple of his mother?s eye and dad?s best buddy. Brad is at the top of his class in school and participates in the school band and in the spelling bee. He?s also an active athlete ? playing intramural hockey and soccer, and running competitively. Both...
