Children of Divorce Trivia Based on British Study
2006-12-12 10:40:02
Here’s a little divorce trivia from a recent British study about children and divorce, published on The Independent: In 2002, 149,000 children under 16 were affected by divorce, which was nearly twice as many as in 1971. By the age of 16, almost one in four children born in 1979 had experienced their parents’ divorce. Despite the frequency of divorce, only 1 in 20 children believe that it was properly explained to them. Grandparents and school friends emerged as the greatest sources of comfort for the children of divorced parents. One-fourth believed that no one had talked to them at all about the reasons for their parents’ separation. More than half of the children who spent time in two different households took a positive view of such an arrangement. Unfortunately, what clearly stands out from the results is the lack of communication between parents and their children about the drastic changes going on in the child’s life due to the divorce. That’s ...

China?s One-Child Policy Causes Divorce Boom
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Photo courtesy of EHP When China enforced a “one child only” policy in the early 1980’s to address its over-population problem, little did they know that they would opening their doors to a new problem: Divorce . A recent study by the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences has revealed that couples, who grew up as ‘only children’ are more likely to divorce than others, and the reason for divorce is primarily parental interference. Zhang Sining, a researcher at the academy said a survey of 162 couples under 30 showed a divorce ratio of 24.5 percent when both were only children, 8.4 percent when one was an only-child, and 11.7 percent for those from families with more than one child. According to Zhang, the overprotective manner in which the single child was brought up made them intolerant and uncompromising. “Parents and grandparents doted on and spoiled the single child - dubbed “little emperors” and “empresses”. Their intolera...

Divorce Rate Soars for Older Couples
2006-12-10 10:39:02
According to Edmonton Journal, Statistics Canada has reported a disturbing increase in the number of older couples who are opting for divorce. Between 1993 and 2003, Canada’s overall divorce rate fell by more than 11%, led by declines of over 40% among people in their 20’s and close to 30% among people in their 30’s. While divorce among couples in their 40’s rose slightly, the rate jumped 34% for those in the 50-54 age group. Among those aged 55-59, it reached a staggering peak of 47%. For those in their early 60s, the increase was less, but it still stood at 31.7%. Among seniors, it fell further to 9.2%. Edmonton psychologist Al Riediger attributes the greater frequency of divorce among older Canadians to a weakened commitment to marriage as a life-long promise and more increased financial affluence on the one hand, and a heightened desire ?to look after their own best interests? as individuals. ?Quite often people stay together for the kids,? he told the Jo...

Christmas is Coming! And So is Divorce.
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Photo courtesy of Vap Dermont95120 Chris t mas has always been considered to be a stressful time of the year. So stressful, in fact, that it has been reflected in the number of divorces filed in the courts after the Christmas period is over. Divorce -Online carried out a survey of 1,000 visitors to their website during October and November asking whether their users believed the festive holiday season had an effect on the decision to divorce in their family. Their statistics showed that of the 1,000 respondents to the survey, 57.3 per cent said that it did play a major role in their decision, 29.5 per cent said it had not effected their decision and the remainder of surveyors did not know. Mark Keenan, Legal Director at Divorce-Online said “relationships that are already in trouble are likely to falter during the Christmas break with all the stress it can bring emotionally and financially, and that the decision to separate appears to be taken during the festive break, with many c...

How to Cope When Your Spouse Goes Ballistic
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Excerpt from “How to End a Marriage” by Dr. Reena Sommer: How Do You Cope When Your Spouse Goes Nuts When You Decide To Leave? The best way to cope with your spouse who is losing it upon finding out that you want to end the relationships is not to argue and just listen. Sometimes, you will just need to leave things be and take a time out to leave the home. Recognize that this may come as a big shock even if you have both expressed openly how unhappy you’ve been in the marriage. It’s one thing to complain and it’s another thing to actually take action and end it. If you find yourself needing to take a time out, reassure your spouse that you will return. If on the other hand, your spouse becomes openly hostile and confrontative, do not be surprised to come home to find the locks changed and your belongings thrown into garbage bags and set out on the front lawn or to find the house completely empty. This is the time your contingency plan should kick in. By...

How to Throw a Divorce Party
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Photo courtesy of Bricks and Stones What was once considered a time of sadness or even embarrassment, some celebrities are choosing a more upbeat approach, rejoicing with friends and even holding “divorce parties” to celebrate new beginnings. A guide to divorce in 2006: Learn from the Best Shanna Moakler, Former Meet the Barkers star and Dancing With the Stars contestant, increased awareness of such parties when she held one, complete with a three-layer cake featuring a knife-wielding bride and bloodied groom, earlier this month at the Bellagio’s Light Nightclub in Las Vegas. “I’ve been to past friends’ divorce parties so I’m not the first person (to have one),” she told PEOPLE. “I’m not groundbreaking or anything. I’m really doing it for myself to have closure and celebrate being single again and start a new chapter in my life.” Hire a Part y Planner But apparently divorce parties are not just for celebs anymore...

Snoop Dogg Reveals What Almost Caused him to Divorce
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Photo courtesy of Rolling Stone Snoop recently revealed what almost caused his marriage to fall apart back in 2004. The rapper says he took his family for granted and was having too much fun being the king of a sex gang. (Apparently that does not do a marriage good.) The artist says he was involved in several sex rendezvous and cheated on his wife, Shante Broadus. He also admits he was part of a gang that consisted of Los Angeles hookers where he could get any woman he wanted - day or night. He told Rolling Stone magazine, “I had a b***h on every exit from the 10 freeway to the 101 freeway ’cause b***hes would recruit for me.” He added, “She’d act like it didn’t happen but she knew it was happenin’ because pimps would come over, get dressed, and then go to the Players Balls.” For some strange reason (notice a hint of sarcasm), this put a strain on his marriage and the 35-year-old was forced to suffer the consequences when his wife deci...

A Guide for Parenting Divorce
2006-12-10 10:39:02
Divorce is a hot issue in today’s family system. It creates issues that affect not only the parents but the children and society as whole. Whatever the circumstances may be, it is the children that are usually most affected by the ravages brought about by separation. Emotional repercussion and conflicts can be somewhat avoided if parents will work hand-in-hand to rebuild their relationship to as normal a state as possibe. While the marriage may have failed, it is important that the children sense at least a civil relationship between their parents. The children must maintain a relationship with both parents after a divorce, and it does no good for them to hear each parent degrading the other. This attitude of cooperation can work very well, in theory, if both parents are committed for their children?s sake. It is very important, after divorce, that the children do not feel left-out and forsaken as a result of the failed marriage. More often than not, parents fail to understand...
