It's a grainy handeld video of a plastic bag caught in a current of air. The bag floats around, caught in the eddies of the wind. It's such a mundane object, but there's something utterly beautiful about the scene. For me it seems to talk about the beauty that's all around us everywhere which we don't open our eyes up to. The reason I mention it is that I had an odd moment coming back from Glasgow today. I was stopped at a big roundabout, where I stop two or three times a week (and have done for years). I am now considering offering my services to MI5 as a highly trained killer, available for Black Ops anywhere in the west of Scotland. I do not have exactly the same skill set as Jason Bourne, but I think that I have some useful alternatives that I am sure any secret service worth its salt could make use of. I used to love these places when I was a teenager. To my younger self it seened that the salesmen had hit the jackpot in life - getting to spend their whole lives amidst the arcane paraphenalia of role playing games. This really was the stuff that dreams were made of. Nothing has changed in the twenty five years or so since I've been into one of these shops (Yes. Really. Twenty five years. It was odd and slightly comforting to be out and about in the pubs on a Saturday night. The streets at night look familiar through the fug of a few pints. It is like a parallel town existing alongside the daytime one. If Stephen Hawking visited, I'm sure that he'd find a gateway from one world to the next (at around 8pm in a pub, just at the point that they dim the lights). I ran into a crowd of folk that I know from various drama clubs which was a laugh. That's one of the things I miss about not staying in my home town - running into old friends in old haunts. The Advisor immediately showed me up by learning the mandolin bits from "Maggie May" and REM's "Losing My Religion" in about twenty minutes. He is far too talented. That will get him into trouble one day. i imagine that some mandolin owners would get jealous, and creep into his house in the dead of night, an would use their mandolins in unspeakable ways to inflict a horrible and painful death on him. His significant other pointed out that, just because he was self-employed did not mean that he should not put in an afternoon shift at the word processor. I didn't know where the venue was, so I wound up arriving about an hour early. I quite like arriving early for meetings, as it gives you time to get your bearings and have a cup of coffee beforehand. However, on this occasion, the only place I could find nearby was a particularly soulless McDonalds restaurant, beside a busy main road. I'm by no means against McDonalds restaurants. I am going up to The Advisor's house for a jam, and my trusty guitar will now be joined by its eight stringed baby sister. Fortunately for my sister she has a nice personality and sunny disposition. I was not initially sure whether this cuppa is a QCT. After all JJ is family. 2008-02-02 00:30:00 I have lost nine pounds since Christmas! This is excellent news, and I suspect is to do with jacking in alcohol. It's not so much the calories in the booze itself (after all six cans of Miller is one of the recommended breakfast options in the Atkins Diet as far as I understand it). However, for me a few bevvies leads me to the fridge as sure as night follows day. The chances of thre being any cheese left within a six mile radius of my house after a night on the town are vanishingly small. I fear that my resolve will be broken tomorrow night though, because I'm going out with my friend Learned Counsel. We went to university together, and we tend to revert back to student type when we see one another. If there was a yard of ale competition I fear that we would join it, just to prove we still "have it". This is very juvenile, and I do not encourage you to behave in this way. Just say no kids. Or one twelfth of a lifetime. I actually feel better for it, and I don't crave a drink. Apart from the odd night when I wake up in a cold sweat after a dream of a beautiful ice cold drink of lager, I have been absolutely fine. This is the longest I have been without a drink since I was a teenager, which is actually quite a scary thought. If celebrity chef and scarmonger were to cut me open, I suspect that he would find my liver to have the word Guinness running all the way through it, like a rather gory piece of Blackpool Rock. We didn’t get finished until about 1.30 am, so I had to drive home in the early hours. I love driving at this time. The only cars on the road are those driven by itinerant musicians returning from gigs and clandestine lovers looking for deserted lay bys. If you see these words on the front of a file, your heart sinks. You can be fairly sure that at least one of the parties to the dispute is an obsessive compulsive who becomes sexually aroused by his collection of ordnance survey maps from the seventeenth century showing the march boundary of Auldshite Farm’s turnip field. If you’re lucky, the obsessive is on the other side of the case: if you’re unlucky, he’s your client. One of the lawyers in my office is dealing with one of these cases just now. Those of you who are following the blogs, will have noticed my desperate attempts to catch up with the real world calendar, following my blogging sabbatical when I was finishing the book. So, happy new virtual year to you all. I hope you all plan to celebrate this evening by rushing into your neighbours' house with some shortbread and a piece of coal, and then insisting they sit up until 4am singing along with you as you strum the ukelele and sing music hall songs from yesteryear. I do not who "they" are, but they have added half an hour to my morning commute, and I feel I want to complain to someone. Since I can't be bothered enquiring who is responsible for the roadworks, I thought I'd moan at my readers here. As a result of the morning delay, I now get to spend thirty minutes almost stationery outside Asda, This was not the way my life was meant to turn out. When I was young I was convinced I would be a vet for big game animals in the manner of Daktari. He points out that 2 QCTs is not, in fact, 10% of 40 QCTs. I have run this through the mainframe, here at the Headquarters of Alan B's blogging empire (it looks like the Batcave, but with more empty packets of biscuits lying around) and I have to confirm that he is correct.
