Welcome to the Blog of the Kindly Cuppa 40 Cups of Tea With 40 Friends is my goal in life. And it must be done before 10th July. Click here to find out why. If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 4 I don't know if you've seen the opening sequence from the fiilm "American Beauty". It's a grainy handeld video of a plastic bag caught in a current of air. The bag floats around, caught in the eddies of the wind. It's such a mundane object, but there's something utterly beautiful about the scene. For me it seems to talk about the beauty that's all around us everywhere which we don't open our eyes up to. The reason I mention it is that I had an odd moment coming back from Glasgow today. I was stopped at a big roundabout, where I stop two or three times a week (and have done for years). The sun was shining. And right in front of me was a traffic light showing red. It was sitting in front of two banks of de...

If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 4 Oh dear. O dearodearodearodear. An idea is taking form in my head, and it is becoming irresistible. It is a project. Or as my Significant Other describes it, "another one of your stupid ideas". I'm not sure if I should tell you what it is yet, because I'm still not sure if I'm going to take it on. But put it this way, it will make 31 Days of Yes and 40 Cups Tea With 40 Friends, look like trifling bagatelles. It might also make the month of March very busy indeed. I often get these ideas, and they come and go, like butterflies landing on the beautiful yellow daisy that is my creative subconscious. They are gone as quickly as they arrive. But sometimes the ideas are not like butterflies. Sometimes they are more ...

No. of QCTs to date: 4 I managed to borrow Bourne trilogy of films from one of my colleagues at work and I finished watching the last of them tonight. Very exciting stuff. I am now considering offering my services to MI5 as a highly trained killer, available for Black Ops anywhere in the west of Scotland. I do not have exactly the same skill set as Jason Bourne, but I think that I have some useful alternatives that I am sure any secret service worth its salt could make use of. Jason Bourne/Alan B fluent in 8 languages/ can play mandolin to basic standard deadly in unarmed combat/ have own badminton racket trained in surveillance/ can usually find car keys inside 1 hour can scale tall buildings/ can climb stairs (short rest required) fe...

If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 4 As part of the preparations for the great Dungeons and Dragons revival, I thought I'd pop into a shop in Glasgow that sells stuff for role playing games. I used to love these places when I was a teenager. To my younger self it seened that the salesmen had hit the jackpot in life - getting to spend their whole lives amidst the arcane paraphenalia of role playing games. This really was the stuff that dreams were made of. Nothing has changed in the twenty five years or so since I've been into one of these shops (Yes. Really. Twenty five years. I know it scarcely seems possible, given my boyish good looks and athletic physique.) The shelves are still stuffed with rule books and adventures packed pristine in plastic...

If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 4 After our jam on Saturday, The Advisor and I went for a few drinks in our home town. It was odd and slightly comforting to be out and about in the pubs on a Saturday night. The streets at night look familiar through the fug of a few pints. It is like a parallel town existing alongside the daytime one. If Stephen Hawking visited, I'm sure that he'd find a gateway from one world to the next (at around 8pm in a pub, just at the point that they dim the lights). I ran into a crowd of folk that I know from various drama clubs which was a laugh. That's one of the things I miss about not staying in my home town - running into old friends in old haunts. It's good to meet people who know who you are. There's no need t...

The Advisor immediately showed me up by learning the mandolin bits from "Maggie May" and REM's "Losing My Religion" in about twenty minutes. He is far too talented. That will get him into trouble one day. i imagine that some mandolin owners would get jealous, and creep into his house in the dead of night, an would use their mandolins in unspeakable ways to inflict a horrible and painful death on him. It will be just like Mozart's demise at the hands of Salieri. Now we have learned "maggie May" and "Losing My Religion", I think that we have exhausted just about all pop songs which feature the mandolin. I think the Sex Pistols used it for the middle eight in the alb...

This is him and me sharing a cuppa at his house yesterday. He was particularly hospitable, having ordered his wife to prepare a tray of fresh scones for the occasion. (As Gordon Ramsay would say - Scone. Butter. Jam. Done!) The Couch Potato is currently somewhat shaggy-haired. You will note that he is currently trying to cultivate a look that is somewhere between King Charles I and legendary porn star Ron Jeremy. (Couch - I think that there may be a job for you as a RJ lookalike there provided, of course, that you keep your trousers on). For the record Couch takes his tea strongish with milk but no sugar. I am also delighted to report that ...

My doppelganger is annoying because he is not some romantic figure who only crosses my path once in a lifetime, perhaps as part of some romantic plot in a black and white film. No. My doppelganger is much more prosaic, and was brought up near to me. I am frequently mistaken for him. Instead of this happening in airport lounges in Marakesh, it happens for me in Greggs the Bakers in Wishaw. We are not related. At least not on paper. But I like to think that we share a common ancestor. Perhaps his great great grandfather cast his wild oats in the direction of my great great grandmother's fallow field. And now - just a few generations later - his strong handsome jawline and her irresistable m...

If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 3 So, the story I heard from my colleague today was this: My colleague stays in an old tenement building in Glasgow. One of her neighbours is a moderately successful local playwright, and a hard-drinking man. Apparently his love for the odd tipple was causing domestic disharmony. His significant other pointed out that, just because he was self-employed did not mean that he should not put in an afternoon shift at the word processor. So, she imposed a ban on him drinking in the afternoon. All was well for a week or two, but one sunny Tuesday afternoon, he succumbed to the wily temptations of Johnny Walker, and found himself three sheets to the wind as 5pm approached. He knew that he had promised to make dinner for hi...

I didn't know where the venue was, so I wound up arriving about an hour early. I quite like arriving early for meetings, as it gives you time to get your bearings and have a cup of coffee beforehand. However, on this occasion, the only place I could find nearby was a particularly soulless McDonalds restaurant, beside a busy main road. I'm by no means against McDonalds restaurants. Sometimes their vanilla shake is absolutely, positively the only foodstuff that will satisfy me the morning after the night before. But as I sat there this morning drinking my coffee, the place struck me as bit sad. The people were lovely - great service, helpful, cheery - but the place seemed ...

I am not too disheartened though. I suspect that they have referred it to their next board meeting, so that they can decide how much they wish to send me in sponsorship funds. As you know, I currently have offers of cups of tea in Turkey, Michigan and Bishops Stortford. I imagine that the cost of my plane tickets, a few nights in first class accommodation and, say, a couple of grand for expenses is not going to put much of a dent in the annual dividend at Tetley. I will keep you all posted. My Significant Other is not proving to be entirely supportive of the project. I asked her if any of her colleagues would like to join me for a QCT (Qualifyi...

I imagine you already know about it because I suspect that you are omniscient as well as omnipotent when it comes to all things tea-related. If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: 3 As I mentioned in my last post, I am jamming at the weekend. In addition to this, it looks like I am having a prelimenary Dungeons and Dragons evening with a couple of my mates on Friday, so all in all it is going to be a very retrospective weekend. Music and Dungeons and Dragons are probably the two most significant hobbies from my late teens that have really gone by the wayside over the years. Every time I think about my plans for the weekend, I have a nagging feeling that I should be spending more time studying for my O Grades. Signs are looking quite positive that at least one of our Edinburgh Fringe shows for later in the year is going to be taken by the Smirnoff Underbelly venue. I really hope this comes of...

I am going up to The Advisor's house for a jam, and my trusty guitar will now be joined by its eight stringed baby sister. This means that I will be taking two instruments that I can't play instead of the customary one. However, as I have mentioned before, these jam sessions are now more about drinking coffee and shooting the bull than they are about music, so I suspect that it will not matter. We still do not have a major label. The AOR man from Columbia said that there is a limited market for ugly old men who can't sing. What does he know? In days to come he will be on Channel 4's "Western Civilisation's 50 Biggest Mistakes Ever!!!". H...

I know I blog away in here to the point of obsession, but I really regard it as a sort of personal website where I can ramble away. Only a couple of close friends have 360 sites, so I don't really do it for the networking. I really do it for the adulation of all my adoring blog fans, and the hope that they will some day realise that all the entertainment I provide them with is worth money. I discovered earlier today that I have at least a dozen messages and comments that I've never seen before. I was going to have a look at them tonight and try to answer them, but they've disappeared again. I imagine that you must all think that I am very rude, and a rather poor friend. Obviously this doesn't worry me overly much as you are only ethereal cyber-friends and therefore cannot come round to my house at night and duff me up for my lack of good manners. However, I made an exception today. I was in the local music shop buying some new strings for my guitar. (I am hopeful that the strings will transform my tunesless strumming into something wonerful by the weekend, when I plan to have a jam with The Advisor, This is fairly unlikely, but I live in hope.) I paid my six quid to Tommy the Music Shop Man, and then as I was leaving the house, I spotted something hanging above the door. Something on special offer. Something new and shiny. We had a brilliant night though, but I am cursing myself because I forgot to have a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) with him, in spite of having persuaded him to agree to being bagged for the project. I am clearly not dedicated enough to the cause. With slippage like this I will not get anywhere near the required rate of QCTPM (Qualifying Cups of Tea Per Month) that is required for success. However, everything is not gloom and doom. I am fairly clear that, after several pints of Old Titanic in Babbity Bowsers, Learned Counsel understood the importance of this project to me. I think we all know the frustration of opening that drawer and finding that we are down to our least favourite pants and socks. Scratchy socks, and pants that, for some arcane reason known only to mastertailors, do not agree with our nether regions, and which leave us with a faint feeling of something being awry in the universe. Not so today! For, when I opened the drawer, it was clear that my Significant Other had been busying herself. The drawer was positively bursting with paired socks, and newly laundered undergarments (with that special springiness that only Lenor can bring). Oh - the luxury! The sheer indulgent luxury. Fortunately for my sister she has a nice personality and sunny disposition. I was not initially sure whether this cuppa is a QCT. After all JJ is family. The question that has to be asked is whether she is really a friend, and thus eligible to make up one of The Forty. The problem is that I have to pretend to like JJ because we are tied forever by the bonds of blood. I have lost nine pounds since Christmas! This is excellent news, and I suspect is to do with jacking in alcohol. It's not so much the calories in the booze itself (after all six cans of Miller is one of the recommended breakfast options in the Atkins Diet as far as I understand it). However, for me a few bevvies leads me to the fridge as sure as night follows day. The chances of thre being any cheese left within a six mile radius of my house after a night on the town are vanishingly small. I fear that my resolve will be broken tomorrow night though, because I'm going out with my friend Learned Counsel. We went to university together, and we tend to revert back to student type when we see one another. If there was a yard of ale competition I fear that we would join it, just to prove we still "have it". This is very juvenile, and I do not encourage you to behave in this way. Just say no kids. It is the right thing to do.

Apart from the odd night when I wake up in a cold sweat after a dream of a beautiful ice cold drink of lager, I have been absolutely fine. This is the longest I have been without a drink since I was a teenager, which is actually quite a scary thought. If celebrity chef and scarmonger were to cut me open, I suspect that he would find my liver to have the word Guinness running all the way through it, like a rather gory piece of Blackpool Rock. (See - that's why you tune into this blog - for inciteful statements like that last one - I'm not one to trade in banal statements of the obvious - you always get something fresh and exciting here). I'm afraid it is depressing though. Ged's comments about the way you reflect on your own life, when someone dies are absolutely spot on. I am hoping to establish a retirement home for Dungeons and Dragons players. That way, in our old age, instead of spending our dotage engaged in whist drives, we will be able to clear out the caverns beneath the castle of the Ceestial Order of Grey Monks. It seems to me to be a pleasant way to play out the endgame of my three score years and ten. The more I think of it, the more I think this might be a moneyspinner. I think it’s probably about the only time of the day or night when there’s any real thrill or magic about driving any more – you know – the kind of magic the car manufacturers hint at in their adverts, where chisel-chinned men slip their galvanised gear-stick firmly into fifth, and snake round empty country roads on their way to have sex with Claudia Schiffer and her b...

Welcome to the Blog of the Kindly Cuppa 40 Cups of Tea With 40 Friends is my goal in life. And it must be done before 10th July. Click here to find out why. If you would like to be my friend and earn a QCT (Qualifying Cup of Tea) then let me know. No. of QCTs to date: There are two words that strike terror into the heart of any lawyer. Neighbour Dispute. If you see these words on the front of a file, your heart sinks. You can be fairly sure that at least one of the parties to the dispute is an obsessive compulsive who becomes sexually aroused by his collection of ordnance survey maps from the seventeenth century showing the march boundary of Auldshite Farm’s turnip field. If you’re lucky, the obsessive is on the other side of the case: if you’re unlucky, he’s your client. One of the lawyers in my office is dealing with one of these cases just now. I was checking the file today, and noticed that the headings in the recent letters had been wrongly headed. Her secre...

Those of you who are following the blogs, will have noticed my desperate attempts to catch up with the real world calendar, following my blogging sabbatical when I was finishing the book. So, happy new virtual year to you all. I hope you all plan to celebrate this evening by rushing into your neighbours' house with some shortbread and a piece of coal, and then insisting they sit up until 4am singing along with you as you strum the ukelele and sing music hall songs from yesteryear. If you have any fireworks, I recommend you let them off at midnight: the parents and pet-owners in your estate will love you for it.

I do not who "they" are, but they have added half an hour to my morning commute, and I feel I want to complain to someone. Since I can't be bothered enquiring who is responsible for the roadworks, I thought I'd moan at my readers here. As a result of the morning delay, I now get to spend thirty minutes almost stationery outside Asda, This was not the way my life was meant to turn out. When I was young I was convinced I would be a vet for big game animals in the manner of Daktari. As far as I can tell, he was never stuck in traffic as he trundled out in his camouflaged jeep to tend to some injured antelope. There are no Asdas in Botswana either as far as I can tell, so ev...

No. of QCTs to date: 2 My good but rather pedantic friend The Couch Potato, has pointed out that my posting from 2 days ago contains a mathematical error. He points out that 2 QCTs is not, in fact, 10% of 40 QCTs. I have run this through the mainframe, here at the Headquarters of Alan B's blogging empire (it looks like the Batcave, but with more empty packets of biscuits lying around) and I have to confirm that he is correct. That is why, when you are in need of financial advice, you must go to The Couch Potato, and should avoid me like the plague. The news of the error has rather depressed me. For well over a year now, this blog has been a paradigm of accuracy. I know that many of you out there no longer go to CNN or BBC News 24 to fin...
