Zombie Detox
2007-11-01 14:51:00 Forgive me for being a little bit frazzled for the next few days. I think I can safely say I have had enough psychopaths, chainsaw killers, alien destroyers and the undead to last me for a few months. My dreams have been filled with an undead Dora the Explorer coming out of the freaking television and chasing me with her damn zombie monkey while saying "redrum" in Spanish! At least I think it was Spanish...I sure as hell wasn't sticking around to ask her. That is what I get for watching morning television with my daughter by day and researching the scariest movies by night. Jeez. I am just soooo thankful I don't let her watch Barney. I can just see him chasing me through an abandoned hotel with a hockey mask and a glove full of knives saying, "Heeeeeeey kids! Heeeeeeeeerrreeeee's Johnny!"Ick. I am having issues. It has even gotten to the point that during these last few days of the movie countdown, I have put aside my fear of smashing my car into another one of those dumbass deer tha... 2007-10-31 15:28:00 #1 - The ExorcistRelease Date: December 26, 1973Directed by: William FriedkinStarring: Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason MillerI watched this movie about four years ago when the wonderful wife and I were engaged and movie night was a regularity on certain weeknights. Now the wonderful wife is not a scary movie person. In fact, she has seen less than 25% of the movies on this list - but on this night, she took one for her man. Needless to say after 2 hours of her burying her face in my arm - it seemed to me this movie absolutely terrified her. So much so in fact, that we slept with the light on for 2 weeks after watching this, with her curled up so tight against me I could barely breathe. Now THAT is my kinda movie. Maybe tonight I'll get her to watch Halloween. The film centers around 12-year old Regan MacNeil (Blair) who has hit puberty pretty hard. She can levitate, show great strength and other strange, unnatural powers. At first, her mother Chris (Burstyn) thinks ... More About: Movie , Scary , Countdown , Scary Movie

Don't laugh - I was only 7. I don't know exactly what it was about it, but it totally turned me off from ever seeing the movie through my teenage years. Later in college I was grudgingly forced to watch it - and found myself engrossed in the story. Sure I had heard bits and pieces of scenes from friends, but this...this was freaking messed up.And I liked it.Alien begins aboard the interplanetary commercial towing vehicle, Nostromo on a return trip to Earth. The ships computer, called "Mother" by the crew, intercepts an odd SOS signal from a nearby moon and wakes the crew from stasis to investigate. When crewmembers Dallas, Kane, and Lambert (Skerritt, Hurt, and Veronica Cartwright) arrive at the source of the signal, they find an ab... More About: Movie , Scary , Countdown , Scary Movie

You know the sound I mean, "Chi-chi-chi-hoh-hoh-hoh", and it scared me to death, even when I knew it was my stupid brother. There is just something about the sound that makes your blood run cold, your muscles tense, and the unnerving feeling of dread going up your spine. Now that I have since seen the movie, you would think the sound would have a lesser effect on me.You would think wrong. It still scares the crap out of me. I know, I'm a wuss. Bite me.The movie Halloween begins on Halloween night in 1963 and Michael Myers stabs his older sister Judith to death with a kitchen knife while in full clown costume. That scene is for some unmistakable reason THE scariest moment in movie history and makes people lock their bathroom doors while showering to this day - even if they are alone -- especially if they are alone. You may be thinking I am talking about me at the end of NaBloPoMo next month, but if fact I am speaking of one of the biggest spine chilling movies of all time, The Shining. It what may very well be the best horror movie ever made, this movie excels in almost every element and combines to make one truly terrifying motion picture experience. In other words, it kicks ass. Before getting to the story, I would like to get one guilty thing off of my conscience. I have never in all my movie watching experience wanted an innocent person to get chopped up with an axe than I wanted Nicholson to get a hold of Shelley Duvall. RomeroStarring: Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn EastmanThis film has been the blueprint for undead movies ever since it arrived on the scene in 1968. I remember staying up extra late to watch this on Cinemax and it scared me to the point that my dreams were invaded by those slow, methodical creatures. I get chills to this day watching this film to the point that I am always on the lookout for the walking dead whenever I am in a graveyard. Yeah, you laugh now - but when they get you, we'll see whose laughing. The movie opens with Barbra (O'Dea) and Johnny (Russell Streiner) finishing up a three-hour long drive to see their fathers grave. Johnny already is turning the undead gods against him by making fun of his sisters fear of cemetaries and how he dislikes visiting his dead father. I thought I knew all about it - the storyline, the characters, the villian, the weapon of choice - everything. This movie STILL scared the bejeezus out of me.The film begins with a news report of graves being desecrated and the bodies being transformed into morbid pieces of art. We next meet five sacrifices students (Sally, Franklin, Jerry, Kirk, and Pam) on their way to an old family farmhouse on a scorcher of a hot day. First, they stop on the graveyard to check on the grave of Sally's grandfather to make sure his resting place is undisturbed. Jaws is the reason why. It doesn't matter if it is the ocean or the local swimming pool at the YMCA, you will have a VERY hard time getting me in the water. That damn shark has totally tormented any water based fun I ever could have had. When a series of deaths that appear to be shark attack related rock the resort town of Amity Island, local police chief Martin Brody (Scheider) is ready to shut the beaches down. Politics would get in the way however as the town mayor, eager to keep the beaches open for tourist season and the upcoming fourth of July celebration, claims the death to be a result of a boat propeller. Reiniger, Gaylen RossWhen there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. These aren't just zombies, pal. These are the undead. You don't turn into one just from a bite from one of these guys. oh no. To put it simple - you die, you come back. Slow, stiff and really gray. That is, of course, if you still have the brain attached...without that, you don't even get to reanimate. You are lower than...well, dead people. In an odd twist from most undead movies, Romero chooses to not make use of dark shadows, instead filming the zombies in broad daylight. While this in itself is not frightening, the massive, swarming mass of flesh-eaters is what kept me up at night. Some may call this film a satire of sorts - others a dark comedy - while still others consider it strictly a genuine horror film. The movie delivers on so many fronts that it could be each o... Breaking the line seperating dreams and reality comes our favorite bedtime character, Freddy Krueger and he is bringing his 5 sharp little friends with him. A great movie with a great bad guy, this is the movie to bring out when you are telling your kids about the boogyman. The film was supposedly inspired by newspaper articles in the LA Times about a group om refugees from Cambodia whose children were suffering terrible nightmares after fleeing to America and refused to sleep. When their parents encouraged them to to do so based on medical advice given to them, the children died shortly thereafter. Try going through the slow realization that you have possibly been raped in your dreams by ultimate big, bad guy - Satan. For the topper, you just might be pregnant with his baby. Not exactly the kind of father figure you would like for your child now is it?Some have said it is more of a thriller than a horror movie, but there is no mistaking the creepy, eeriness that this movie instills. The film makes excellent use of images, color and shadow as cues to the mood and theme. During the picture, darkness becomes more prevalant in scenes and many of Rosemary Woodhouse's visions have biblical tie-ins, that while may be confusing initially, become clearer as the movie continues. 2007-10-20 20:22:00 #12 - The Silence of the LambsRelease Date: February 14, 1991Directed by: Jonathan DemmeStarring: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted LevineWe've all seen the various clips of this movie on specials that highlight the scariest moments in film or the worst villian or, in Jodie Foster's case, worst hairdo in a horror movie. So if you're thinking the only complaint I have about this picture is the hairdo of the leading lady then this must be a pretty good flick. Then you would be right.First off, the acting is superb - especially Foster, whose relationship with Lecter is a mix of intrigue and disgust. Like a grisly auto accident, while the result may be a bloody heap of twisted metal, she cannot help but watch and yearn for more from him. Hopkins screen time may be brief, but every second Hannibal Lecter is on that screen - you hang on every word and every action the man does. 2007-10-20 05:03:00 #13 Evil DeadRelease date: October 15, 1981 / April 15, 1983 - U.S. TheatricalDirected by: Sam RaimiStarring: Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, Hal Delrich, Teresa TillyNo, you are reading this right. The Evil Dead series has two movies in the top 15. That is the power of one Bruce Campbell. However, where Evil Dead II was scary with a little bit of campiness thrown in, the original was dark, bloody and absolutely terrifying - with just a miniscule $375,000 budget! Think Blair Witch Project with better acting, more action and ALOT more blood.Where Evil Dead II had moments where I could chuckle at the actions of the cast, in this picture it all seemed so serious and to a certain extent - believable. Back in the early 80's, you had your serial killers in Jason Vorhees and your psychos in Jack Torrance, but you didn't have alot of demonic possesed people running around (Linda Blair notwithstanding). Evil Dead developed much of the horror film formula of a group of kids do... More About: Movie , Scary , Countdown , Scary Movie

From video rental stores to libraries to my friend who owns about every horror movie ever made. No luck. Luckily for us, there is YouTube and after doing a bit of digging, I was able to find to full movie - in English! Whoo-hoo!The first thing that catches your eye is the use of color in this film. Not only does Argento use this to create the atmosphere of the movie, but his fantastic ability to add vibrant reds and blues to almost every scene makes you almost forget this is supposed to be a horror picture. Argento also does a wonderful job working with shadows and this combination of color and darkness comes off perfectly and makes watching a pleasure on the eyes. Don't get me wrong, this is not a "nice" movie. The slayings are as graphic as I have ever seen, but they don't have them... More About: Movie , Scary , Countdown , Scary Movie

Not only do I get to write about it - I got to watch it all over again.20 years later ... it hasn't lost a step.I have never had such a great time watching a horror movie than I did watching this. While there is a little more intended humor (at least I think it was intended) than the original, this movie is as scary as the original, if not more so. Campbell worked solo for most of the first half of this movie, but there was no lull in the action whatsoever as he made every scene fun. He leaves you conflicted, as you want to double over with laughter at his fantastic facial expressions and the way his every action seems overexaggerated - but the movie refuses to let you relax as there is something ... Loving The Chill Of Fall
2007-10-15 05:31:00 I have got to admit, I am loving the little cold snap that this second week of October has brought us here in mid-Ohio. Where the beginning of the month brought us temperatures in the upper 80's to low 90's, this sudden dip into the 50's and 60's has everybody scrambling for their winter coats and lip balm.Hello? It is October. You can't have your fun-fun summer heatwave all of the time. I actually feel cheated that I may be only getting a month of good fall weather before the snow hits. It's not fair dammit!I am a fall person. I love it when you can go outside and take a deep breath of the crisp, chilly air and you can FEEL the season. The fall season cannot be described in just one mere sentence, but rather a collection of thoughts, memories and traditions that get passed on from generation to generation.Fall is ... watching the trees turn into a new kaleidoscope of colors each and every day.Fall is ... football, whether it's high school on a Friday night or a bunch of frie... Ten Things That Piss Me Off
2007-10-12 07:19:00 Well lookie what the 15 cats dragged in. Yeah, it's me. The same guy who swore last month that he was gonna write something everyday for the sake of my sanity if for nothing else. Jasper, The Spawn of Satan
2007-08-31 16:02:00 Look at that cat over there, looking all serene and at peace with the world. Go ahead, look at him. The look of thankfulness that we kept him from certain death by adopting him into our home. It's all a lie. That cat is pure evil. From the moment Jasper arrived, life has been one little incident after another. Oh sure, good 'ol Jasper is a saint to everyone else, but when it comes to Grimm - his eyes turn red and I swear his teeth grow about six inches.Oh I am sure you may have seen an incriminating picture of me petting that feline fiend, but I can asure you that was a one-time deal. Ok, I WAS going to write about my vacation...
2007-08-27 05:04:00 But with the news we received late Friday night, I may have to say hell with it - it's all good now. The news we've been "working hard" (love that phrase) for since April has finally come to fruition. The wonderful wife is pregnant.I am amazed at the difference I feel now than just one week ago. Then, I was worried about every tiny little thing - from bills to the damn broken belt on my mower to whether my sore toe is supposed to look that shade of purple. Now, I am on cloud nine and could give two bullchips about anything.Bills piling up? They'll get paid.Grass needing cut? It will get mowed.Toe needing amputated? I have nine more.As I was driving today, I found myself thinking life is good. I really do not have anything to complain about right now. No sooner than that thought passed my mind, I began thinking that if this was a movie or something, I would drive into a train or get hit by a semi or some other seemingly ironic thing to force the movie goer to cherish life.Luckily, th... Excuses and Shout-Outs
2007-08-24 19:47:00 Well as you may have noticed, I have had one hell of a time keeping up with my promise to post everyday. Hell, I am only halfway through my vacation posts and that was almost 2 weeks ago.Being short staffed at work due to vacations along with training for impeding new clients have made my otherwise serene and calm work shift into a brutal and hectic place to be - causing spare time to be at a minimum. This has also taken a toll at home. While normally I would have a 3-4 hour window to write and spend time with the family before I would go back to dreamland, due to this increased workload I was mentally and physically fatigued to the point that I have been a walking zombie when I finally got home and often would go to bed with little but a incoherent grunt to the wonderful wife and little one.I know, I know - excuses, excuses. So now that you have heard these my excuses reasons for the delay in posts, tomorrow I will fly through the rest of my so-called vacation to get things caught up... I Thought I Was On Vacation Part 2
2007-08-17 12:07:00 How sad is it that the only time I can get to write about how my vacation has been is when I am at work after said vacation is already over?My body is screaming inside. And I am sore as hell. Here's hoping the wife's playgroup is another three months away.SaturdayAfter groaning throughout the night from the soreness of muscles I haven't used in quite a few months, I am awaken by the sound of my cell phone. Now I could have done the smart thing and ignored it, found a nice cool spot on the pillow and caught another 30-45 minutes of sleep. As you may have noticed by now, I don't do smart things.I reach for the phone - of course it's just far enough away to constitute having to actually get up to get it - and see who called. It was Will. Will is an interesting soul, a mixed breed of Curly from the Three Stooges, a little Chris Farley, a dash of Flavor Flav and a smidgen of Dustin Hoffman from Rain Main. I Thought I Was On Vacation Part 1
2007-08-13 16:33:00 On Wednesday I began what I thought would be a nice, relaxing eight day vacation full of sleep, blogging, sleep, porch relaxing, sleep, baseball watching, sleep and maybe dozing off while relaxing on my porch watching baseball...oh yeah, and more sleep. So you can probably figure out how my vacation has went so far.Wednesday and Thursday:I actually did pretty much nothing. The wife had me venture outside a few times, but my constant complaining about how hot and muggy it was pretty much annoyed the hell out of her. Sometimes I wonder why she wants another child when she has me. I'm the biggest baby around.Friday:After much deliberation which consisted of the banning of sex, no more cooked meals and a stoppage in cleaned laundry (my wife is a crude negotiator), I was convinced to actually DO something today. So while the wonderful wife went right to work weeding and raking the trees in our yard, I looked around for something for me to do. I noticed our burnpile from when my friend Wi... Baseball Junkie
2007-08-10 05:19:00 Back in February, I wrote about my latest addiction at the time - Madden '07. Needless to say, that craving lasted for a good three months before I was able to fight those damn pigskin demons and kick the habit. Of course, going winless in that first season as the hapless Cleveland Browns helped demoralize me to the point of swearing never to play that cursed game ever again.Next it was poker, which I also wrote about. Now back in January when I wrote that piece I was merely a casual player, throwing my chips in once or twice a week just for a change of pace in the routine of my life. In June however, I went into freak mode, spending every available minute online trying to make the big time and be the next big poker star. Hell, I even went so far as to start a blog about my playing experiences - which for nothing else, has a kickass banner made by the wonderful wife. This obsession probably was a major cause in my lack of posting here, as I was just to damn busy trying to win some ... More About: Baseball , Base , Junkie

2007-08-08 18:05:00 I admit I am not the most experienced man in the world when it comes to bedroom activities. Don't get me wrong, the wife and I enjoy a very active sex life, but I am not one to have a wide repertoire of different positions or in-the-moment situations in my arsenal. But every once in awhile a moment occurs when you think to yourself, "Mmmm, yeah this is gonna be good."I had that moment last night. As I sat soaking in the bathtub after a long day of doing absolutely nothing, I was jarred from my aquatic slumber by a quick succession of knocks followed by the door opening a crack..."Hey, can I come in?" the wonderful wife asks. I grunt the affirmative.I slowly begin to sink back into my water wonderland, fully expecting tons of apologies about how she had to go #2 and that she couldn't use the downstairs bathroom because her father/mother/daughter had set up camp inside it and wouldn't be done for some time.Only I didn't get that.In fact, as I slowly opened one eye, I got the surpris... 2007-08-07 19:16:00 It has been over 2 months since my last post. How sad.I had planned on giving my 100th post some time to bask on its own, giving me a chance to relish the accomplishment and to reward myself with a little break of sorts. A day or two, maybe a week tops. But 2 freaking months?!?In the words of my deceased little buddy Vizzini from the Princess Bride, "Inconceivable!"But alas, it happened. Why exactly? I am not sure. I still like to write. I still like people enjoying what I write. Maybe it was that I had used up all my good material and that I felt that writing about seeing a picture of Elvis in a pile of dog droppings wouldn't be as humourous as I thought it was. (It was the younger Elvis, not the older, pudgy looking one to all of those that were curious - I know you are out there.)Then a realization hit me. Do all of my posts have to be funny? No. What can't I just write what I feel and let the cards fall where they may? When I started this blog, it was solely for the purpose of... More About: Call , Ease , Comeback
