Coastal Commission Meeting Tomorrow !!!!
2008-02-05 21:40:00
OK, got an email from Shannon Leavey of the Malibu chapter of Surfrider asking if I would post a reminder about tomorrow's critical meeting of the Coastal Commission and their insane plan to ruin one of the best breaks in the world, Trestles. Here's the info - every person who attends makes a difference!IT'S NOW OR NEVER!Just a final reminder that Trestles needs you to attend the Coastal Commission Hearing this Wednesday February 6, 2008. This Coastal Commission hearing is our chance to stop the Toll Road through San Onofre State Park. With last week's passage of federal legislation requiring the TCA to comply with state law, a "No" vote from the California Coastal Commission would be a killing blow to the Toll Road. The hearing will start at 9am and will go all day. If you are not driving with our bus/carpool you can show up whenever you want. However, we'd like people there at 9am; and if you want to testify you need to turn in your speaker slip in the morning. It's difficult ...

Venice Surf Report Surfing Venice CA Surfing CaliforniaGet on it!Looks super fun out there - head high on the sets, nice big shoulders if a little swampy, but the best we have seen in quite some time. Three out south, nobody out north, 4-5 suiting up, parking filling fast, light offshores and clean conditions.Go already! So as you may know, I work in one of the big towers downtown, and as such I spend a lot of time in the elevators going down to the lobby for food, drink, coffee, etc.And for whatever reason in the last month or so, getting on and off the fucking thing is like trying to ride the subway in Tokyo. Nobody waits for you to get off before getting on and there have even been a couple times where I almost didn't get off before the doors closed again. So yesterday I decided I had had enough. I hit the button, the thing comes, I get on and go down to the lobby. As soon as the door opens this guy, who was like maybe 35 and about 5'6", just heads right into the elevator withou...

A Benefit for VSR Readers
2008-02-04 21:06:00
Okay, so I had to go get new tires on my car not too long ago, and as I was sitting in the lobby waiting I started talking to the only other person trapped there with me, a woman by the name of Jaimee. We got to talking as the Montel Williams show had one more in their never-ending series of "Teens Gone Bad" where pre-adolescent girls call their Moms assholes and have sex with strangers at the Greyhound bus station at age 12, and eventually the subject of "what do you do?" came up.Well, turns out that Jaimee is the co-owner of a very cool salon here in Venice called "Venice Trim" on Abbot Kinney. (Insert pun here). I told her a little about the website and she asked if I do any advertising on it.Which brought up a good point. I do this thing for free. I only give Ridershack such prominent placement on the site as I love what they do, so I figured, why not see if Trim fit the bill?So I went and got, and paid for, a haircut from Jaimee and it was the best haircut I have had in years. Venice Surf Report 02/04/08 Holy Shit I Have a Headache!
2008-02-04 17:08:00
Doesn't look completely awful, but yesterday's 50 kt winds, which deposited hugh sand dunes on the pier, have kicked up both some decent head high windswell but the surface, shape and organization leave a lot to be desired.Consequently only one out south, and I didn't see much happening for him. Winds are calm now, sun is out and it should be a nice day, but unless you want a heavy workout without much payoff I say find something else to do today.Yesterday morning, after staying in most of the weekend in order to save up my party power for the Super Bowl, I woke up with the most goddawful fucking headache. I don't know if it's a migraine or what, but it totally sucks. It was so bad that I didn't even have the motivation to get up and go to a party to which I had been invited, and which I am sure was good, and instead watched the game on my couch in a pair of sweats and sans alcohol. There iwas one small benefit, though. This is the first Super Bowl in 20 years that I actually r...

Surfing Venice CA California Surfing Boyos Fistfights BumfightsSmall and not much punch.Maybe waist high but dealing with a big high tide this am (again) and so a lot of the smaller ones are just pushing through.Couple out on either side, light / variable winds, praking filling fast. There's an old saying that says people make their own luck. And maybe that's true. I don't really know because I've never experienced either side of the luck spectrum; I've never been run over by an errant bus or won the lottery, so for the most part my life is probably like most other people's. As a journalist, though, I think it definitely is possible to manufacture good things for yourself.Look no farther than yesterday's post about the rumble at the boardwalk: had I not proactively gone out LOOKING for that kind of crazy shit the chances are pretty damn good that I would have sat in my ridiculously overpriced apartment, watching TV or playing the piano, and never even known that there was a clo...

Venice Surf Report Surf Venice Surf Conditions Venice CA(Ed. Note: Uncle Grant's post appears at the bottom of this one, Blogger issue I can't figure out)Not too much, but something......Another cut in size leaves us even smaller in the knee high range, but there are some corners out there, it's just going to take a little more patience today. The conditions are nice once again, with offshore breeze, a smooth ocean surface and only one out on the South side (guess who?), so all in all if you keep your expectations low you won't be disappointed. One out south, nobody north, couple trying to decide between the pier and the breakwater, chilly and clear, plenty of parking left. The whole thing finally ended when I tried to punch the clown in the face.It had started innocently enough. I left work early yesterday as I had to get some $200 piece of something or other replaced on my car and got home about 4 o'clock. Since it was still light out I figured I would go for a quick bike ride ...

Big Mike's List/Are We An Asshole?
2008-02-01 17:10:00
Waist and occasionally chest-high windswell with a little to much water in the water. Offshore and freezing air and water (my car said it was 46 in the air). Sunny and clear, with an offshore breeze so the conditions are nice except for the freezing temps. Five in the water - all regulars. Not bad for the desperate - otherwise wait and it may be better as the tide drops. Lots of missed waves and frustrated paddlers. Corners if you can get into them. Venice Surf Report Surfing Venice CA Surf SurfingA lot smaller......a lot.Cut in size leaves us at waist high, maybe, and those that are rolling in are still fighting the high(ish) tide we had at 4 am; although it looks, and is, amfully mushy right now it should get better as the tide drops. We are definitely missing the hollow barrels of the last week, but there are some rides to be squeezed out of you put yourself in the right spot.Offshore wind at 3-5 kts, two out south, one out north, 3-5 more suiting up, street parking about 50% gone and water should be - finally - cleaning up.Well, the month of January has come and gone. It doesn't seem as though it was just a few short weeks ago I was desperately scanning the aisles of the local stores trying to figure out how little I could spend on Christmas and still hold my head high, but it is.And as I sit here enjoying my first cocktail in quite some time (14 hrs), the urge to sit down and bang the keys is pretty strong right now. Dollar Falls Against Euro as Fed Cuts by Half-Percentage Point By Ye XieJan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar declined after the Federal Reserve cut benchmark lending rates by a half-percentage point and indicated that further reductions in borrowing costs may be needed to keep the economy from recession. The currency slumped to a two-week low against the euro after the cut to 3 percent made the combined rate reductions by the central bank since Jan. 22 the fastest easing of monetary policy since 1990. ``The dollar will move lower again,'' said Mike Moran, senior currency strategist at Standard Chartered Bank in New York. ``The statement underscores the softening growth trajectory. The Fed will continue cutting rates in the next couple of meetings.'' The dollar fell 0.7 percent to $1.4874 per euro at 2:26 p.m. in New York, from $1.4776 yesterday. Against the yen, the dollar traded at 107.26, compared with 107.11 yesterday. The euro traded at 159.41 yen, compared with 158.27. The U.S...

Venice Surf Report Surfing California Venice Surfing Surf Surfing ReportBump in size, consistency and shape has us looking pretty damn good this morning.Swell is coming in as ultra-short period, chest to maybe overhead windswell that is about split between dumpy lines and fun, racy corners. You'll have to work to get out there as it is so consistent, but once there you'll be stoked. Light offshores are helping the shape and grooming things nicely; if you can stand the 45 degree weather you should be just fine. One out north, Jaime out south, plenty of room in the lineup and parking galore, chilly as hell but the sun peeking through.First off, congratulations to "east coast transplant" for being visitor #100,000 yesterday; next stop: 1,000,00. Venice Surf Report Surf Conditions Venice CAEhhh....Offshores have groomed things up but a big drop in size leaves us with only knee to waist high, short period windswell. There are some bigger combo sets that come through every once in a while, but if you bring a little extra foam you'll have no problem finding fun, little corners scattered about. The South side looks a lot less dumpy than the North side.Nobody out, a couple scoping, light offshores, a bit cool and a clean surface....but probably still not clean water. Tomorrow maybe. So - looks like today is the day.If you notice down on the right hand side you can see from the hit counter that today is the day where we shold pass the 100,000 hit mark. Forget it.... Already onshore at around 25-30 kts, comepletely and totally blown out. The Flag at the entrance to the marina says it all.The wind was so strong this morning it actually blew the gate off the pier!Well, no, not really. But it is blowing like a fat chick on X.No surfing today in Venice . Okay, so the Federal Open Market Committee (The Fed) is meeting this week and the markets are expecting another cut in the Fed Funds rate. So what, right? This should be a good thing, shouldn't it? Lowering interest rates means all of us should, theoretically, pay less in interest on everything from home equity lines of credit (HELOC) to credit cards, and might even help some of these dumb fucks that rolled the dice on mortgage loans they say the didn't understand but now realize they can't afford. So, again, what's the problem?Well, the problem is that while it will help everyone a little, and save a siginificant minority of Americans from their own greed and avarice, it runs the ve...

So - for those of us who value our internal organs, and thus chose not to paddle out into what was certainly the best, and worst of, conditions today, here is a little something from VSR's resident videograper Christian .He said he could actually smell the water it was so fucking putrid. Then again, my boy Matt said that even though todays session probably took 5 years off his life, it was worth it.I will say this - it looked so fucking good out there today. But I am a wuss and the slightest chance of a tussle with the flesh eating virus, or even a bout of "end my drinking career forever" Hepatitis C, was just too steep a price to pay. I stayed out.

The Real Story Behind Soc Gen's 7.2B Loss
2008-01-25 22:43:00
As you know from reading this report a "rogue trader" for Societe Generale, France's second largest bank, lost 7.2 Billion U.S. Dollars last week through unauthorized positions and wrong way bets on Stock Market Index futures.Upon learning of the fraud, Venice Surf Report immediately dispatched it's highly trained team of financial reporters to the scene. Here is the story behind what caused the single largest loss in World Banking history.FRENCH TRADER WAS FORCED TO WORK 30 HOURS A WEEK FRIENDS of rogue trader Jerome Kerviel last night blamed his $7 billion in losses on unbearable levels of stress brought on by a punishing 30 hour work week. Kerviel was known to start work as early as nine in the morning and still be at his desk at five or even five-thirty, often with just an hour and a half for lunch. One colleague said: "He was, how you say, "une workaholique". I have a family and a mistress so I would leave the office at around 2 pm at the latest, if I wasn't on strike.""But ...

Uncle Grant philosophy on surfing after a big rain can be summed up thusly: Surf when you want; die like a man!Nothwithstanding this pithy, pugnacious advice, don't even think about it. Even We, Uncle Grant, wouldn't go out after that dump last night. Ever take off from LAX after a big rain and check out the shore? - unbelievable. The waves are chest high, and there are surfable corners We suppose. But with the side-shore wind at about 15 MPH and the tide up, you'd probably do not much more than paddle around for an hour turing to find the right spot. Won't work. Nobody out; nobody thinking of going out; nobody at the Venice Farmer's Market even. Flooding on Speedyway and Dell. Only the ducks in the library parking lot are happy.*********************************** *******We, Uncle Grant, have lived in LA66, Santa Monica, Venice and Marina del Rey for 46 years (1 year in Montreal, 1 New Orleans and 2 in the Bay Area brings us to a grand total of, yikes, 50 (as of 2.11.08 - ...

You know, I never thought I'd say this, but this country is totally fucked.I am so sick of reading this shit, and so fucking sick of the goddamn lazy motherfucking cocksucking whores that run our government that I can't stand it anymore. Why the angst?I just read a news release discussing the "economic stimulus package" that the House and Senate have supposedly just agreed upon, and quite frankly I want to fucking puke.Basically it calls for a $300 "tax rebate" for individuals, $600 for families, with additional amounts going to those families with children.Which is fine. If the government wants to do something to try to avoid a recession, well, this is probably the least stupid of the stupid ideas idea that has been bandied about. But wait - there is just one little provision you may care about. If you happen to be an individual who earned over 75K, or a family that earned over 150K, you get a different amount: nothingYep - if you worked hard, stayed employed, went to school, put...

The (nontidal) Surge
2008-01-23 05:00:00
A brief timeout from Matt's reality check of economic prognostications for some good news: Don't forget - The Surge is working. Bite Us! [Fixin' to piss off my liberal friends (and about 95% of my friends suffer from his malady).] When we think about The Surge (remember the Iraq war?) we are struck by one thought, and that is this: It seems clear now that we needed more troops in theater from Day One. But we think the spectacular success of the Surge is due less to the number of boots on the ground than it is to something far more important.Looking back on the rise of the insurgency, it seems as if the average Iraqi did not know what to make of America. I suspect that many would have been far more supportive a long time ago, if it were not for the image of a helicopter atop a building in 1975 and a line of desperate people running for their lives. To work with Americans may have been what many wanted to do much, much sooner. But?When Michael Moore makes a hugely successful fi...

Well, just wait 'til tomorrow. One of the most important consumer stocks, a real bellwether if ever there was one, just reported numbers that beat analysts estimates for Q4'07.The company? Apple. How much did they beat it by? $.14 a share. But take a look at the after hours chart for AAPL.CLICK TO ENLARGEWhy, if they beat the Street then, is the stock down almost 13% then in after hours trading?Because while beating last quarters estimate they also almost halved their forecast for the upcoming quarter and year. That is so fucking huge I can't even begin to describe the ripples this is going to have tomorrow. The consumer, who accounts for 70% of U.S. GDP, has clearly thrown in the towel and said no more. No more $250 iPods, no more $1800 Mac Books, no more discretionary spending on shit we never really needed and no longer can we afford. The fat is in the fire and no amount of $800 econmic stimulus checks or cutting of the Fed Funds rate is going to help.To put it in prespective:App...

Blown out and messy Part II....No pics today as there was not near enough light to take them when I was down there as it was dark, overcast and pouring rain, but you aren't missing anything.Stiff winds from the north, marginal swell, messy surface, pouring rain, urban runoff - what's not to like?On the plus side there does seem to be an abundance of parking. The Dow opened off 460 points this morning and then the Fed came in and, in a move unprecedented since a bunch of sand niggers flew a couple of 777's into the World Trade Center, cut the Fed Funds rate by 75 BP in a vain attempt to restore confidence in the creaking, listing, rotting hull that is the U.S. Finanical System.I was privvy to a very interesting story on Friday that directly relates to this, but it is a busy morning here as you can guess - check in a little later for the details.Only down about 200 points now - now the talking heads on CNBC are talking about how this is a "buying opportunity".If you believe that jus...

Should only get better as the tide drops until it drops too much and starts closing out at about +2 feet. Plan accordingly.Nobody out, a bunch looking, two suiting up and getting in, stiff offshores, corduroy surface, chilly as a mofo, parking still to be had.So....yesterday morning my buddy Allen and I decided that we were going to go in search of a place that would hold the small swell that was in the water better than Venice. Now, Allen has never surfed locally anywhere other than Venice. High tide + small waves = swampedHard to tell on the size of the swell as the +6.5 ft. high, which just happened a few minutes ago, has everything completely swamped. I saw one or two that didn't break directlt on the sand, but even those didn't look surfable. No choice but to wait for the drop this morning. Any window we have will be very, very narrow in Venice - say from 10:00 am to noon.Nobody out, nobody looking, perfect conditions except for the swell and the tide, street parking about 40% filled. The reason why I have decided to plaster the Ridershack banner all over the surf report this morning is that a celebration is called for.You see, Ridershack, Venice Surf Report 's one and only surf shop, was just voted "Best of L.A." in Fox's "Best of L.A." contest.
